I descale ever 3-4 months and this process is so difficult to remember I literally have to watch this video every time I do it. If Nespresso is concerned about the aesthetics, why can't they just put a "Descale" button on the side near the back or something? There *has* to be an easier way!

Let machine cool down in this position for ten minutes. -Make another coffee this time using a used capsule and that should complete the ridiculous process! Orange light does not stop blinking when rinse is completed after descaling. You have to exit the descale mode to get the green ready light. Video needs updated. After doing 2 rinse cycles I read the comments and replies and discovered this.
I finally typed out the instructions in the video and made minor changes that must be unique to my machine. (ie - I run the rinse after the solution twice for good measure, but the green light never comes on.) It also doesn't mention WASHING the water tank after running the solution which I think is a great idea. This way, I can check off things as I'm going.
you have to hold the lever down and the button to exit. So next time get to descale and do that. It runs till empty then do your 2 full water rinses by pressing the button each time. After hold the lever and button till it turns green. Its fresh on my mind since I just did it hope it helps.
It was after my third full tank on the rinse cycle after descaling that I finally learned the light would never turn green on its own. You have to simultaneously hold down the lever and the brew button for three seconds to essentially reset everything.

I had a problem with the last step. Pressing the lever and the brew button didn't result in a solid green light but the unit turned off. I think we are good to go. Thanks! Your text here is much clearer than other instructions I have found.
pretty sure you would want to clean the Water Tank after done with the descaling solution, with all the toxic warnings on it and such. the video has you (3min mark) just going straight to filling it back up with water to rinse and then drink coffee.
I forget as well and have to look up this video. Descaling button would be awesome. BTW I just use vinegar and water for descaling and takes quite a while when it needs to be descaled again. One tip we use filtered water for coffee machine. Setup water filter system from Costco.
@@susanklingenstein4945 I use a cup of vinegar and fill the rest with water. Once cycled through I just use filtered water. I don't like using chemicals to clean my drinking stuff. 😁
Hei everyone. I just want to make your descaling process problem free. Follow the description from the video, but DO NOT refill the water tray with detergent when you see it almost empty, as many of us did. Just let it simply run empty. Then machine stops by itself. When it stopped, fill the tray with clean water and press the orange blinking button and let the machine run out of clean water and then it stops again. Follow the video description how to get out of Menu mode ( or just press both buttons for 3 sec). You should be done after that. Good luck 😊
Thank you - very helpful comment. I have not found any info apart from your post about how to exit descaling. This video says NOTHING about ending the descaling process. Sorry Nespresso, but you let us down
Simple solution: I still had the dreaded light appear after descaling and then running a rinse for several times after. The way I fixed it was to turn the plug off at the wall and wait a while. The whole machine then reset.
Hello Jonathan. Give us a call at the customer service line found on our website, and one of our machine experts would be happy to assist you with descaling your machine.
You have to let the water run out. I figured this out after I called and was walked thru the instructions with customer service. They NEVER say let the water run out! Way too complicated!
The descaling instructions are WRONG in this video. The video says that after the rinse cycle, light automatically turns green. That does NOT happen. When the light turns a steady orange after the tank is empty, you have to push the lever and button together for 3 seconds to make the light turn green - without thus step you just get stuck with the orange light!
I rinsed with three full takes of fresh water, and it is still on orange light. I just manually stopped after then. I thought it was only my machine, but now I know its not!!
@nespresso I did call one of your agents, which is how I know the video is wrong... suggest you correct the video rather than keep adding comments telling customers to call!
@@nespressoI had the same issue - no green light, following descale & rinse mode. Video is wrong. Fortunately, no harm done to the machine - exit mode took me back to normal program.
I've had my Nespresso Vertuo for about 15 months and it's never notified me to descale, but I could taste that I needed to do it. I'd previously read that it was a complicated process, and as this video shows, it is. I'm thankful for this video, but Nespresso; why does this process have to be so complicated? Press the button once, press the button and the lever for 3 seconds, turn it off, back on, press the button again, all the blinking lights...it's frustrating to have to go through this intricate process. Make it easier for your customers on future models, please.
I feel like a dedicated "descale" button hidden behind the capsule compartment would be a significantly easier alternative. It could be programmed to only activate is the machine is off or something.
Lady, this is a bad use of the machine. In the instructions says very clearly that a descaling is needed every 3 months. How can anyone have 15 months with the machine without descalating ?
Sorry guys, like others, my rinse cycle at the end never ends. I have to manually end it. So glad I found this video and helpful people in the comments. From US.

Instructions definitely need updates.. I’m beginning to wonder if I should pass on drinking the first coffee after finishing the descaling and rinse process… Bring on the rinse and descaling single buttons in the future please.
Hi Carlos, I am sorry to hear this. Please send us a DM via social media if you would like assistance with the descaling of your VertuoPlus machine. Thank you.
Descaling is a 2 part process. I made the mistake of descaling and then turning off the machine. You have to descale, clean the water tank, then press the brew button while the machine is blinking orange. If you mess up like me then the half orange half green light doesn't go away.
The machine need a "rinse" and a "descale" button. I work with IT in my day-job and I never remember these steps, it's way too complicated. And after the descale process has emptied the tank, it's still in a descale mode which I never remember how to get out of. I love the machine overall, and it's extremely user friendly for making different kinds of coffee, just one button and a bar-code on the capsules. However, the maintenance procedures is likely made up by a software engineer with zero understanding of how to make something simple.
Does the nespresso machine know it needs to be descaled due to time, number of coffees, or does it have some form of sensor? I ask because we have a filter that removes limescale, so genuinely don't know if its needed...
Press these bottons together for 3 seconds. Do a little dance and turn around while clapping. I would prefer if they had a descaling pod that read the bar code, and just started the process automatically
Sorry but there is at least one better video on YT I just saw it. Nespresso cust.service walked me through a mock once (sheesh) but the guy from the other video was closer than this one. TOO much extra tips like rinsing the catch tray which really has nothing to do w/the process. A clean person can figure that out on there own. I suggest checking out a few on YT. The guy (after descale & rinse cycle) get you to where you again press lever AND top button to get you back to green.
I've had the Nespresso Vertuo for over two years, and every time it's the same frustrating issue. Whenever the machine signals that it needs descaling, I follow the instructions exactly as provided, but it never works. Despite paying for the official descaling solution each time, the problem persists. Now, I’ve had to schedule yet another repair and will be stuck at home the entire day on a Saturday, with a time slot from 9 AM to 5 PM. For the premium price of the Vertuo pods, I expect a machine that performs better and more reliably. The only reason I'm bothering with another repair is that I still have a stockpile of pods worth several hundred euros. But this has become a regular, bi-annual ordeal-sending the machine in for a 4-5 day repair every six months. Nespresso, do better! I've been a loyal customer for years, but my patience is wearing thin.
After the rinse cycle has gone through one container of water, do not refill it. Press the top button while the reservoir is empty and it will try to pump water, know its done, and THEN the light turns green. If you manually exit the rinse cycle without the light turning green, then the descale alert will come back because the machine doesn't know it was successfully completed.
0.8l … this is how much water you need to add to the descaler. Blink and you’ll miss it - the narrator doesn’t say it and Nespresso were too lazy to rerecord the video … they added text to the image that pops in and goes away after 2 seconds. This process is insane to remember. Would be great to have a ‘pinned summary’ to the you tube so I don’t have to pause and replay this every month.
I ran through a descaling packet and it never stopped rinsing! So i finally stopped the rinse manually, held down the button and the lever to exit the descaling mode and the red and green light was still there! Thinking i messed it up, i ran the descale a second time with a new packet and the same thing happened! And to add insult to injury, this video does a horrible job explaining any of this. Surely after two cycles its descaled, so how the hell do i make the light go away??? Beforw you ask, im in the US
Update: I called technical support and they had me sit on the phone with them for 30 minutes to run through a third descaling cycle, which caused my machine to overheat right at the end. Their solution? I was told to wait and our and do it again for the 4th time! On top of it there's an awful burning smell coming from the machine now. What an absolute joke, never buying this junk again.

No this video is not good, really. There is a better video on YT I just saw it from some regular guy. Also I had Nespresso cust. service walk me through a mock one over the phone and it was more like the guy in the other video than this one. Please look for it. The key was to press lever and button down same time for 3 sec to get back to green. But please see his video.
Hello. We recommend descaling your machine with Nespresso Descaling Solution every 3 months or 300 capsules, whichever comes first, to remove internal mineral deposit that can build up, which can affect the flow, temperature and overall performance of your machine. A weekly cleaning will keep the brew unit clear of grinds and coffee residue.
One thing to note is that you should descale as soon as the red/green light appears. Putting it off for a few days definitely makes the process more difficult and could possibly cause permanent damage to the machine.

Hi Jesse, you do not need to keep adding water to the tank. Please allow the water to run out, and the machine will stop once the water tank is empty. Many thanks!
The video is wrong. The light doesn't go from blinking orange to steady green after the cleaning process. Once the water runs out you need to press the lever and button at the same time for three seconds to make the light green.
I have descaled the machine, now i have completed a rinse cycle, then held the coffee and lever down 3 seconds, but my machine is still showing as half red and half yellow. Have I done something wrong, how can this be corrected?
Finished descaling. Rinsed four times. Turned off machine. Green light doesn’t come on upon restarting. Getting the half-red, half yellow button. This is taking hours!

I am extremely frustrated with this machine and the video instructions. I'm no dill and I'm sure others must have had the same frustrations. I have watched the video instructions many, many times to see if perhaps I may have missed something. The machine goes through the cleaning process ok but does not go into the descaling mode at all. I have put through two shots of descaling fluid to no avail. The machine has a constant half green half red indicator light on all the time. I'm at my wits end with this thing. I believe the machine has malfunctioned or the video instructions are not correct.
Yeah mine also kept automatically turning off when I stayed the descale process within five minutes. Didn’t have too much solution or extra water in the tank either. Ridiculous. These machines and moreso the pods are insanely priced- you’d think they’d make this part if not easy, at least doable!
Hi Natalie! If you are still having trouble would you please contact us at 1-800-562-1465 when you are near your machine? Our machine experts would love to help!
I descale and it seems like 3 weeks goes by and I have to descale again as the Red/Green light starts blinking. Becomes frustrating. And of course I have to watch this video and I still mess it up. It would be nice if they printed the instructions on the capsule container so it's readily available.
I get to the part where I put the water in and the descaling liquid and I did all the button pushing there is and nothing ever starts. It just stays partly red and partly yellow. Cannot get it to scale.
Over time and usage, the hardness of water may cause mineral build up in your machine which can affect the temperature, the flow and overall performance of your machine, and taste of your coffee. It's not recommended to use other solutions as Nespresso Descaling kits are specifically designed to work with our machines for the best results.
I am desperate! I descaled...ran it through several times and the orange light will not go off. I keep refiling it... cannot open to put coffee pod in, cannot reset or end this process. Have tried unplugging too!
I completed the video of descaling. Turned it off and tried to run it the next day. The Orange light is coming on and blinking continuously. This is my 3rd. Machine which has failed after descaling? Please change this process and simplify or have descaling button. The instructions are ambiguous and don’t work.
Hello Laurie. We are disappointed to hear that the descaling assistance didn't work. Give us a call at the customer service phone number found on our website, and one of our machine experts would be happy to assist you with troubleshooting services.
Hi Eric, we usually recommend descaling about every three months so it is likely time. If your machine is starting to show signs of a decrease in temperature or pressure that may also indicate it is time to descale.
I’m stuck on blinking orange after descaling. I followed the video’s instructions exactly. Video says it should start in less than 2 minutes - it had been 20 minutes and the rinse hasn’t started.
I have descaled and rinsed. Light is still red/green. Descacled but with only water this time hoping the machine would think it's descaled. Then rinsed. Still half light. I've done this a million times at this point, what gives????

Dear Nespresso, the inconsistencies between what is being said and what is being shown are obnoxious. Be less stylish and more useful in this type of video, please.
So as most of the comments here I was stuck on descaling mode, using the advise from Nespresso and other comments I tried to exit it but all I have now is red light.... I tried many times, did mock descaling, on and off the machine. Its either red n green or just red.
I descale ever 3-4 months and this process is so difficult to remember I literally have to watch this video every time I do it. If Nespresso is concerned about the aesthetics, why can't they just put a "Descale" button on the side near the back or something? There *has* to be an easier way!

I said the same thing. Simplify the process. Push a button and let the descaling begin.

Totally agree….hardest thing in my life is to clean this machine…takes half a day
It’s completely ridiculous
I’ve had this thing for four years and I am just now learning that you have to manually end the rinse cycle. This machine is insane
Troubleshooting steps for two common errors from customer service when I called:
STUCK IN RINSE CYCLE:
-Descale according to video
-If, like me, your rinse cycle never ends and continues blinking orange, never turning green no matter how many times you refill it, you should hold the lever and button down anyway to make it turn green
-Unplug and plug it back in
-Fill water and make a coffee as usual
DESCALE LIGHT WON'T TURN OFF AFTER DESCALING:
-If, like me, the descale red/green light comes back on after you make a coffee, you need to run descale mode again, but this time with just water, not the descale solution (and not just a regular rinse cycle)
-To do that, turn the machine off by holding the lever down
-Once the machine is off, hold down lever and the button
-Once you see orange light, click the lever one time, and then the button one time (make sure to put a bowl to catch the water)
-If orange light is still flashing when water runs out, fill up tank halfway with water and press button one time
-Press and hold lever and button until light flashes green
-Wait until flashing green light turns steady green (will take about a minute)
-Open head of machine and unplug. Let machine cool down in this position for ten minutes.
-Make another coffee this time using a used capsule and that should complete the ridiculous process!
I now see why Nespresso doesn't just answer the questions in the comments... because the answer is embarrassingly long and complicated for such a prevalent issue!

Wow. He sounds like he does voice-overs for a renowned science-based youtube channel or something.
It is. Kutzgezagt. But it might be AI.
pretty sure you would want to clean the Water Tank after done with the descaling solution, with all the toxic warnings on it and such. the video has you (3min mark) just going straight to filling it back up with water to rinse and then drink coffee.
I forget as well and have to look up this video. Descaling button would be awesome. BTW I just use vinegar and water for descaling and takes quite a while when it needs to be descaled again. One tip we use filtered water for coffee machine. Setup water filter system from Costco.
How much do you use?
@@susanklingenstein4945 I use a cup of vinegar and fill the rest with water. Once cycled through I just use filtered water. I don't like using chemicals to clean my drinking stuff. 😁
@@JohnnyVG23 Thanks. I have the least $ Vertuo machine without the bells and whistles in the video. We'll see.
Instructions literally state to NOT use vinegar as it can ruin your machine
Please introduce a descale button. Surely that is possible
Good luck 😊
Thank you so much. If your comment had not been here, my machine was about to hit the wall 😅 thank you 😊
Wow...I was on a never ending cycle. Thank you.
Thank you - very helpful comment. I have not found any info apart from your post about how to exit descaling. This video says NOTHING about ending the descaling process. Sorry Nespresso, but you let us down
Nespresso sucks. @@briantaylor8639
Thank you - thankfully read your comment before third refill!
Simple solution: I still had the dreaded light appear after descaling and then running a rinse for several times after.
The way I fixed it was to turn the plug off at the wall and wait a while. The whole machine then reset.
my descaling process never stopped
Hello Jonathan. Give us a call at the customer service line found on our website, and one of our machine experts would be happy to assist you with descaling your machine.
Same here 😢
if you bother to make it easier such as a 'descaling' button would be the only solution
You have to let the water run out. I figured this out after I called and was walked thru the instructions with customer service. They NEVER say let the water run out! Way too complicated!
It's facinating to me that (humans) find the simplest step by step instructions so difficult? Great how-to-vid!
Not everybody is a rechnician. Even techs find it difficult
There are two different vertuo plus models, the instructions work for the domed top one but not for the flat top version.
also different country version may differs. Hence, the disclaimer 🙄
I think my vertuo will be the most rinsed ever
The procedures - though slightly complicated - worked as expected for me. Thanks.

I have saved this video because it is no better in the uk. Long process but worth it.

Hi Carlos, I am sorry to hear this. Please send us a DM via social media if you would like assistance with the descaling of your VertuoPlus machine. Thank you.
I had to check if this was indeed a Nespresso cleaning tutorial and not a Kursgesgat video
Descaling is a 2 part process. I made the mistake of descaling and then turning off the machine. You have to descale, clean the water tank, then press the brew button while the machine is blinking orange. If you mess up like me then the half orange half green light doesn't go away.
I just did the same thing
Disaster - same
Disaster. How to .ake sure the two steps are completed?
How did you get rid of the red/yellow light after descaling then? I might have also missed the rinsing part and I can;t fix it!!!
@@rramos1020in the video it says to exit hold the coffee button and the lid down for 3s
Haha, Nice! The Kurzgesagt Voice Over
You should mention that the machine has to be off when putting it into descale mode, I almost threw my machine out the window till I worked that out.

Going on 4 years with my nespresso and I still have to watch a video to descale. 🥴😂
Hey this is the same guy who narrates @kurzgesagt videos!
Finally a descaling instruction video that is clear and works
💚 ☕
Sorry but there is at least one better video on YT I just saw it. Nespresso cust.service walked me through a mock once (sheesh) but the guy from the other video was closer than this one. TOO much extra tips like rinsing the catch tray which really has nothing to do w/the process. A clean person can figure that out on there own. I suggest checking out a few on YT. The guy (after descale & rinse cycle) get you to where you again press lever AND top button to get you back to green.
@@nespresso screw you.

I’ve been on the rinse cycle for over 24 hours now. I need to sleep. 😴
My wife & I had another good laugh thanks to this comment.
Good One!!
I know logically that it's a descaling video but I can't hear that voice and not expect the world to end somehow.
The newest Kurzgesagt video
Hello, and thanks for reaching out, we are sorry to hear that. Could you please identify your country, so we can further look into this? 😔
Sad to see that the one's who patronize their products are not happy with the way it gets maintained. Nespresso should address this concern.
Wasted 4.5L water until discovering that I have to manually exit this descaling process.
can you make an Australian specific video
0.8l … this is how much water you need to add to the descaler. Blink and you’ll miss it - the narrator doesn’t say it and Nespresso were too lazy to rerecord the video … they added text to the image that pops in and goes away after 2 seconds.
This process is insane to remember. Would be great to have a ‘pinned summary’ to the you tube so I don’t have to pause and replay this every month.
What does "emptying" do?

@@nespresso Hi, I'm in NJ USA
Putting it off for a few days definitely makes the process more difficult and could possibly cause permanent damage to the machine.
why is t he orange light not going off when it’s in rinse mode?
