Both orders are fantastic, but the second listed order is more than likely going to get you into the series better than the first suggested order.
Regardless playing every entry up until Reverie is a must, and the play orders are to be followed adamantly if you don't want to ruin and spoil the experience for yourself.

@@Keychan64 There isn't exactly a "psp" series, but FC is on the PSP. It isn't recommended to play the PSP ver. since the enhanced PC port is the better version in every conceivable way.
The entire Sky Trilogy is available and only on Steam at the moment, along with the Crossbell Duology, and Erebonia Quadriology.
I would personally recommend playing Cold Steel 1 then 2 on Playstation, Sky Trilogy on Steam, Crossbell Duology on Steam or Switch, and then Cold Steel 3 then 4 on Steam or Playstation.
(The Switch ports of CS3, CS4, and Reverie's performance isn't that great, so I wouldn't recommend it but it is still a option.)

This series is unlike anything I've ever played, it's so good and criminally underrated.
Good music and world building but the games feel too long now.

But with life-time sales of around 5 million for the whole series, which spans decades and 12+ games, not many people have played the games and thus don’t appreciate what the original poster deems to be an excellent series. I think that’s what he meant. Otherwise I agree with you: the games are fairly accurately appreciated, possibly even too much to the point of overlooking their flaws.

This series is one of best experiences I ever had in gaming the story the characters the music I love it all.
The timing couldn’t have been better. Just finished trails from zero and it was a blast! Best RPG i’ve played in years! Cannot wait for this to arrive….

Same here man! Just finished my nightmare run, along with the platinum trophy. Gonna move onto Azure the moment it comes out, then play CS2 3 and 4. These games are simply incredible!

What an amazing series. I was not sure when I was buying cold steel 3 but I think I have now a new favourite series. Amazing stories,well written characters and beautiful world!!Absolutely love this and recommend it!!

I just started with cold steel 1 n finished 2 today, gotta play 3 n 4 still but damn, this is the most addictive rpg series I’ve played since final fantasy in the 90s n those weren’t even connected! It’s crazy!
3 and 4 are even better than 1 and 2. The games just get better the more sequels they make. It's def nothing like the FF series which gets worse over time..
I've already pre-ordered trails to azure and now i decided to pre-ordered trails into reverie because when i finally get the chance to play reverie i will definitely choose the crossbell story route first as us crossbell fans will definitely be eating good in 2023

The production quality is way better than I anticipated. Very interested in this title. I've never played anything from the franchise.
It's an amazing game but if you haven't played anything from this franchise, I would recommend playing the other trails games first as this one is more of "epilogue + prologue". Hands down the best RPG, world building, story ever created. Worth the investment.
I would not reco.mend this to a newcomer. This is one of the least newcomer friendly games, it's meant to be the conclusion to no less than two story arcs.
No less than three story arcs in fact. I hiiiighly suggest at least playing the trails of cold steel saga before jumping into this, if you don't you will be utterly and hopelessly lost story wise

We still need trails of cold steel 1 and 2 on switch in the west and trails in the Sky trilogy on ps4/5 and switch. These games are highly encouraged to be played in order and switch players cant even play cs1 and 2 in English wtf

Yeah, Trails Before Dawn (It was called that on an English Overlay - so whether it's subject to change, but the title is probably referring to the fact that Calvard is still recovering from the aftermath of the Great Twilight causing Operation Jormungandr) definitely seems like a step in the right direction - especially given the "multiple routes", choosing between Ouroboros, Bracers, Ikaruga or Heiyue in Kuro 1, and the multiple timelines in Crimson Sin adding an interesting twist on things

This is cool and all, but can they please release the first two Cold Steel games globally? It's so weird that three and four are available but not one and two.
My main issue with this series. You gotta play ALL games to understand everything, and some are not available in multiple platforms. Such a shame. The amount of potential customers they are losing because of that must be incalculable.
It would be easier to get into the franchise if they weren't direct sequels one after another...
They have different publishers. If I remember correctly, the earlier releases were published by Marvelous/XSEED and the newer ones by NIS. I'm no expert but there may be some licensing issues or maybe the people who could publish them again don't see the benefit in doing so.
They are. The entire series is available in the West, just currently spread across Steam, PS, and Switch.
The Sky Trilogy is available on PC/Steam
The Crossbell Duology is available on PC/Steam, PS4/5, and Switch
The Erebonia Quadriology is available on PC/Steam, PS4/5, and Switch *(Only CS3/4 at the moment, CS1/2 are on Switch but only in JP currently).*
@@johnmaco No, that's what makes Trails unique and so vastly interesting.
If Trails wasn't chronologically connected through its world building throughout each entry, that would make it no different from FF, Persona, Tales, etc. Not every game has to be extremely accessible and held back due to being self contained.
The first two are published by XSEED, so you'll have to bug them.

This series is so good. Started with Cold Steel 3 on Switch, loved it so much went back and played the 1st on Steam. I'm getting the collector edition day 1.

Unfortunately those licenses are owned by XSeed. NIS America is responsible for bringing Ys 8 and Ys 9, along with Cold Steel 3 and 4 to Switch and PC. Falcom has made a deal with NIS America to release all their titles in the west at this point.
The Sky trilogy can be played on any PC or laptop, it's as accessible as it can be.
I still need to finish Trails in the Sky SC. then go through 3rd, Trails from Zero, into Azure (no released), Cold Steel 1-4...
I am so excited to play this game next year! Especially since it has a giant mech/robot and the story looks like it is going to be amazing!

I wish they'd have started from the beginning on the Switch. I tried the demo for one of these games and I can't get into it because I have no idea what's going on.
It is (most likely) a localization issue. XSEED localized the Sky trilogy as well as Cold Steel 1 and 2. But NISA took over the localization starting from Cold Steel 3 and onward. While I can't say for sure who the problem is here (it could be XSEED, NISA or Falcom - or a combination of all three), but the end result is they decided not to port CS1 and 2 to the Switch. Or to be more precise, they decided not to localize the Switch ports of CS1 and 2 that Clouded Leopard Entertainment released in Asia. But hey, they are still relatively easy to get via Steam, GOG, or the PS4's digital store (maybe even the PS3 and Vita stores still have them - I'm too lazy to boot up either of them to see though). >.>
That said, it is understandable why you were confused. The overarching narrative, combined with the text heavy nature of these games, can definitely make people feel confused if they play them out of order without any context. Which is a shame, because these games are awesome, and definitely worth playing.
Anyways, if you haven't yet, I recommend playing an Ys game. Same developer, not as text heavy as Trails games tend to be, and while there is an overarching narrative to them, it isn't required to play the games in any specific order. I'd recommend Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana or Ys IX: Monstrum Nox as your first entry into the series. Both are on the Switch, and IX has demo, sooo... yep. Although you may want to wait for a sale, since they do go on sale occasionally.
@DRAKENSTOC awesome reply, thank you! I have actually played/completed Ys 8, 9, and Origins this year on Switch. I think Origins might be my favorite action RPG of all time after finishing the three separate times. Loved 8 just as much and I enjoyed 9 but felt like it stayed within the city way too long and progression didn't feel as natural as 8. Playing these games is why I became interested in the Trails series, but as a mostly physical collector I think it will inevitably be too late by the time I might be able to jump in from the start. The Trails games seemingly skyrocket in price but I can't justify spending the money right now not really knowing what's going on, and I only have a Switch so can't start elsewhere. Anyways, I'm excited for Ys 10 and Oath in Felghana.
@@josephpiedmonte Oh, that's awesome! I'm glad that you like the Ys series already. I'm also excited for 10 and Oath (although I've played Oath before on my PSP, lol). And yeah, finding physical copies of the Cold Steel games at reasonable prices is nearly impossible now, unfortunately. =/
I actually got into the Trails series by accident. I randomly purchased Trails in the Sky FC on GOG because it was on sale, and then forgot about it. About a year later I was looking at my collection of RPGs on Steam and GOG and noticed it. Since the reviews all said it was amazing, I decided to give it a go. I don't regret anything, lol. XD
Also, I should have said this in my previous comment, but Trails from Zero is also on the Switch. It's the first game in the second arc of the series, and while it does reference events from the Sky trilogy(first arc in the series), you will be able to understand what is going on without having played those games.
Granted, some of the cutscenes related to certain characters from the Sky arc will not be as exciting or emotional without the context you would have gotten from playing those games, but you will still be able to understand the gist of what is going on anyways. Trails to Azure (Zero's sequel, and the second/last game in the second arc) is releasing next year on the Switch too, so... yep. If you play these two games, you'll have finished one of the arcs in the series. =P
And if you are looking for another Falcom RPG, The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is getting localized and ported to the Switch next year too. This one is actually an action-based RPG, like the Ys games, so you may find that you'll like it. I haven't played it myself yet, but I've seen people say it is good.

The funny thing is that you can tell who "C" is if you've played "Zero Escape", since DC Douglas voices Zero as well as "C"
You can tell who C is because they share the same stance and attacks as another character

You can start with Trails in the sky FC
Trails from Zero or Trails of Cold Steel
Granted if you don't have a PC then your starting options are severely limited.
Pc is currently the only platform in the West were the whole series is available.
If you are stuck to switch. Then Play Trails from zero followed by Trails to Azure which releases in March.
Then if you still are stuck to switch Cold Steel 3 and 4. Then Reverie.

Do yourself a favor and switch to PC instead. The translation for FC is much worse on PC, and you can't follow the series to Trails in the Sky the 3rd on PSP.

None of the Sky games or the first two Cold Steel are on switch in the west. Sadly, they probably never will be since XSeed owns the publishing rights.
Basically what the Switch is missing is Trails in the Sky 1,2 and 3. Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2.
If you look at it Numerically the Switch has (as of 2023)
Trails 4, 5, 8, 9, 10
The whole sky trilogy, cold steel 1 and 2 aren't available on switch
