  • I don’t know why I didn’t put any of this into the video, but first let me speak about my admiration for James Gurney:
My first introduction to James Gurney’s creative and witty style of knowledge sharing was through his blog, Gurney Journey, way back in the early 2000s. I marveled at how someone could present such a wide variety of topics in a detailed, nerdy, and scientific way, all while being concise and entertaining. He’s like the Bill Nye of art and illustration! I could put practically any subject in the search bar of his blog and find a post related to the topic I was trying to understand.
Later I purchased this book, Color and Light, as well as Imaginative Realism, and also was able to attend a presentation he gave at a Portrait Society of America conference, and can say he is as knowledgeable and witty in-person as he is online.
So you can see where this is going… I am a big fan of James Gurney’s material and appreciate that he keeps it short, packed with info, and clearly illustrated (for those of us who mostly look at the pictures.) But is this an instructional book? Not necessarily. Check the video to see more in-depth about what you’ll find inside the book, and how I recommend you use it in your art practice.

I would really like to hear your opinion on the Bargue "drawing course". The book is quite expensive, which is not a real problem if it is used and gives results. Some people swear by it, and other think it is totaly overrated. What is your take on it? I am self taught, and intermediate level artist. I can only do art work at home. I have an other career, but want to advance in art, and possibly do some acual work as an artist in the future. Do you think Bargue, is a good way to "level up", or do you have other suggestions for someone who is limited to online content, books and photos?
Thanks for a good review! I am buying "Color and Light" as a book to help me along.
