    If anyone is afraid of drawing in the workbook and messing it up, please don’t be. At under $18, just think of it as another sketchbook but with valuable instructions and examples in it. Breathe, smile, and go for it. You’ll love it.

    I draw everywhere I go. Whenever anyone asks how they can learn to draw I point them to Alphonso Dunn's TH-cam and his book. He's an amazing artist and teacher. Glad you are promoting this set. It's a game changer for people trying to improve/learn drawing.

    When we were young, there was no resource that was immediately available to us, like TH-cam, Pinterest, or any of the dozen Getty-style photo stock sites. We had to rely on television, what we saw around us, postcards, and of course, books. My world was cluttered with books, from art and music, to mythology and zoology! Like you, I'm sure, drawing from those kinds of resources has always been my way of choice and even nowadays, I prefer a reference book over the internet, any day. So, while I enjoy Alphonso's channel very much, my younger self is bummed out because his book was not available in 1972 when I could've really used a comprehensive, yet simple guide like that. So glad you shared his work which will get him some extra attention that is rightly deserved. And as for your work, well, you know how I feel. That mesquite piece is so well done, it's got me in knots! hehe!! Cheers and stay well, Steve! :)

      When I was young I was in love with horses. Did not have one, just toy horses. But found a book on how to draw horses, which broke down the horse body into shapes, and I learned how to draw horses. Then I started doodling horses in different positions, grazing, rearing, etc. Learn to do the hair, shade the muscles. This was the late 60's. So some books were available. I want to say Walter Foster? Not sure if that is the name of the book author though.

    A nice tribute. Great book, I agree. I feel bad that someone literally plagarized Alphonso's book and Amazon has not taken it down. Wish there was something that we could do.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Thanks. Just stay informed on the subject and spread the word. To be fair I will make a comparison of my own. That is if the book is even released. The publisher has put a hold on the release to investigate further. And to be fair Jake should be heard. He has tweeted a plagiarism denial already and publicly criticized Alphonso for not contacting him first. That left a bad taste in my mouth, so he's not off to a good start, but we'll see.

    • @magnolia2
      @magnolia2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      We can support Alphonso by buying his books instead. I just purchased them both. The best way to teach Jake a lesson is by not buying his plagiarized book or participating in InkTober. Don’t support him anymore and he’ll learn a valuable lesson even if he chooses not to admit his wrongdoing. You can’t even sell any of InkTober creations anyway or Jake will come after you because he copyrighted the name. He pretended like it was a month long art community gathering but it was really to build his brand and free advertisement for his brand by using the hashtag. 👎🏽

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      scoobyclub I’m not ashamed of anything. I did my homework. Been a professional artist for almost 40 years. I know plagiarism when I see it. Based on your comments I see plastered all over TH-cam offering no real arguments, I doubt you really even know what plagiarism is or how to identify it. And insulting, flaming comments such as the other one made here will not be tolerated. It was promptly deleted. If you have some honest, respectful debate or argument to offer then do it.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @scoobyclub You're misinterpreting what the commenter here meant by "literally." That aside, Alphonso compares almost an hours worth of pages, a bunch captured from a video thumb through. The concepts, layouts, terminology and thought progression match up in multiple points over and over and by the end of the video pile up so that it defies coincidence or simple common place knowledge. I'm satisfied. Ethan Becker's video also made a convincing case. I've got the book on order and will eventually take another look. If for some odd reason my observations don't match up to what I saw in those videos I will say so.
      From comments I've seen from you in other places, you like to insult rather than make a case. That discredits you and your idea of professionalism, not mine. You've made your opinion clear so "rail" elsewhere please. We're done here.

    Its funny this popped up in my suggestion list. Alphonso just put up an hour long video laying out how Jake Parker basically copied this book and is selling his version. Plagiarism is a nasty crime. This video does Alphonso a great honor which he definitely deserves. 🤘

    I'm an addict when it comes to buying books like this that help to teach you a different language of art. Anything that gives ideas to improve... Plus, it has a drawing of a yummy burger on the cover! What's not to love?!? I agree with you that there are some natural born artists, I've worked with many. But when it comes so easy, I've found many of them didn't work hard at it. For the rest of us, we have to work our butts off. I always joke that my middle name is "Salieri"(sorry, obsure reference from Amadeus)!
    I know he isn't a golden age of illustration illustrator, but if you can find it, Bernie Wrightson did a book of Frankenstein about 20 years back that still makes my jaw drop when it comes to inking and drawing. I think Bernie was greatly influenced by Franklin Booth. From what I read, Franklin didn't know about engraving and developed his style to imitate what he saw in print.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I understand the Salieri reference completely. Good one. And oh my yes! Bernie Wrightson is a favorite. I have a couple books of his work including Frankenstein. Mouthwatering stuff. I want to read more about Booth. Someone else here commented as you that he developed his style to imitate wood cuts. He is fantastic for certain. Thanks Steve!

      I got his books & they are wonderful. They really have helped me improve my drawing. They are thought out so well & I love his drawings & examples. Earlier on I basically drew stick figures my entire life (well into my 30s) and didn't think I could draw. Then I found a book called "Drawing With the Right Side of the Brain" www.amazon.com/Drawing-Right-Side-Brain-Definitive/dp/1585429201/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1544412821&sr=1-1&keywords=drawing+with+the+right+side+of+the+brain & I finally realized it wasn't that I couldn't draw, it was that I simply did NOT know how to LOOK at things. Alphonso's books have now upped my skills.

    I've been watching Alphonso for a while now, as I begin my journey with pen and ink drawing; he really is an excellent artist AND tutor. Thanks very much for sharing your own thoughts on his book. I was aware of his book, but had not seen it independently reviewed like this, and I appreciate your candid and heartfelt thoughts on the content. I think you summed it up nicely in two ways. First, you reviewed his book in the same video as a review on studying old masters :). Second, you said that reviewing his book made you want to pick-up your pen and spend an afternoon drawing! I think I'd call that a win. Keep up the great work here, Steve!

    Thank you Steve for this review. So had my doubts ..... whether or not to order these books. You have made me decide to order them and to this honest and comprehensive review I am convinced that they will not disappoint me. Too many and too often book reviews here on youtube that disappoint, but I enjoy Alphons way of `good` lessons on youtube, as I am always happy to see a video of you again. Now I can hardly wait to receive these Alphons books and get started with them. Unfortunately they have not yet been translated into Dutch, but the examples speak for themselves that this will not pose a problem that does not control English. Moreover, there is always google translation to understand it and then the explanation of Alphons on youtube ..... a great combination.

    So much fun, Steve. I have watched Alphonso Dunn, but I had not known about his book. It really looks great, and the workbook, too. Also, the Dover book is super. I used to sell this book in its earlier printing at the bookstore where I worked for 25 years. We sold hundreds of Dover books, especially art and literature. I have many of them in my own library. I love illustrated books, and have belonged to the Folio Society for many years because I love beautifully illustrated books. Many of theirs are pen and ink, some with original illustrations, and some with new ones. I am sure you know about them.

    WOW, what an amazing book review. I have been following both you and Alfonso Dunn for a couple of years I guess. I have found his tutorials to speak on a level I can understand, so his books have been in my Amazon cart for quite a while!! I thank you for your review, not that I doubted his books would be extremely helpful, but I respect your opinion and it solidifies my decision for purchasing his books as soon as possible.

    Thank you for reviewing these two books, Steve. These two books should be in everyone's reference arsenal, IMHO. I got Alphonso's first book in February and his second one in August after it came out. (Right in time to practice for Inktober!) My drawing has improved tremendously by practicing and using these two books.

    I agree 100% about talent being mostly the natural ability to “see”. This can also be learned. Drawing ability and skill comes through work whether you start with that natural talent to see or learn it.

    Steve , perfect timing with this video. I am participating in Inktober for the first time. I find that I get so far in a drawing and get stuck on how to finish it without over working. Mostly it is under worked because of not knowing "what to do next". So these books look perfect as a next step for me. Thanks.

    Can't wait to try out your book suggestions! 👊😄

    Awesome awesome video, I am an avid illustrator. I am super interested in alot of the golden age artists especially their styles, it intersects well with art nouveau which I love. BUT I really appreciate that chapter in Alphonso's book about the "balance of the line", because I do it naturally myself and I think it is imperative to some aesthetics of illustration and composition. I haven't heard it called something specific before, it's always just been something you learn by learning proportion/relation and the golden ratios as well as things like the "French s and a curve". And very very rarely do artists actually talk about it but I think it's such an important concept so that's really cool.

    Great, inspirational review! I very much enjoy your channel and have learned so much high-quality information from it. You have my favorite watercolor channel for sure. I follow and like Alphonso and I've had his book on my wish list for some time. This video gave me the nudge to realize "what better time than Inktober to grab it?" :) Also, thanks for including the masters' compendium...looks like a worthy addition to the collection as well. It would be cool for you to do a video with a section of a master study, transfer/copy it, and then use watercolors in more than one different gamut/ color scheme on the same study.
