You know at 18 when up in smoke came out, I never thought of them as minorities. There were just two stoners like me and my friends, who were predominately just white guys. The fact that one was latino never entered into our thoughts or our discussions. We just thought they were funny.

Hell, I always thought they were both Mexican. It was not until years later I learned that Chong was not (guess the name should have been a clue ha ha). Best stoner comedy of all time! 😎
They were just one of us!!!!! In 1978 when we saw this at a theater the lights went out and the joints lit up and we just cracked up for over 2 hours!!!!!!!!!!
This movie played nonstop at a drive in theater every night one summer, and I went to the movies at least once a week, but mostly any night I could, I would go watch this movie. Getting baked and watching up in smoke! Life was good back then. Shit man! That was 42 years ago for me. Damn! I got old! Oh well. I still appreciate good smoke!

It was a different time and place, this America, wasn't it? Speed (they call it Meth, now), coke, heroin, weed, were all available back then. It was a combination of the Vietnam War, the Black Liberation Movement, Women's Liberation, the Sexual Revolution, all of that. Then came the "Reagan Revolution", Len Bias dying, "Just Say No", The War On Drugs and then crack cocaine. Whew! Stoner humor went out the window, C&C broke up, Cheech started doing TV and Disney, Chong took his act on the road and his kids started acting (Rae Dawn, Robbi and Marcus (He played Huey Newton in Panther and Tank in The Matrix) and most of us who didn't die young, got married (divorced) and had kids and got older. Shit happens.

I remember going to the movies with a bunch of stoner buddies a the ripe old age of 18 totaly stoned and on acid never laugh so much in my whole life ill never forget that one ( now im 57 drink a beer on the week end o i hate getting old )

The best stoner movie ever. Me and my friends saw it when it first came out. Foged up the car before going in the theater. I'm sure the theaters that showed that movie made a ton of money on candy and popcorn.
I saw it at the Cinema and Brew in Orlando when it came out. That was the funniest movie I'd seen

My favorite scene was when the cop came up to them and asked them what they wanted, then asked them if they were going to eat the hotdog on the dash. Priceless.
I opened for Cheech and chong 5 out of 6 of their first performances together after 28 years.
Their jokes ALL worked. Every single joke got a big laugh. After 28 years they were still hilarious.
And very nice people as well.

I was a kid in 1979, everyone loved this movie and our family wasn't into drugs. We loved it because we could relate to them as if they were our brothers or cousins. Good memories!

In grade school we could bring in records to listen to at lunchtime,5th grade a dude brought in sister Mary and I was hooked!
don't disgrace Cheech and Chong by comparing them to Harold and Kumar
Isaac, while I loved the (first two) Harold and Kumar films, and agree much of the humor, plot points etc. is very similar to Cheech and Chong, and the comparison wouldn't necessarily be 'a disgrace', I do think the point is clearly about quality, legitimacy and originality rather than genre, topic, goal, plot. One could say Cheech and Chong were different cause they made a film with their own money, their own jokes, their own means, while Harold and Kumar was a big budget franchise from the start, that was supported with money, comedic writers, special effects, trained actors and the precedent of such films already existing. All this shows in the films, and some of the jokes feel more forced or kind of sound like they come from some SNL-style joke assembly line, and when they don't (which to be fair is most of the time), the obvious 'insider' status and the differing time can take it from counterculture to cringy, while Cheech and Chong aren't that different from the people they portray.
What Cheech and Chong did with their films was not a thing before them, it was an uphill battle to make it one, it was the creativity of mostly these two guys who wrote it and made it work, and while Harold and Kumar are iconic films in their own right, it was also just hollywood doing what they already know works, it's a different time and perhaps we should be glad for that, but let's be honest, it's not exactly the same.

Yo I LOVE Cheech and Chong. Talked to Cheech several times. But Harold and Kumar are def them of a newer generation and deserve to be mentioned in the same breath without a doubt IMO
It's really cool that they are just two bros doing what they want it's rare when 2 people can connect on that kind of level but when it does it's a beautiful thing

grew up in the 70's and 80's Cheech and Chong were a huge part of my childhood, we knew every word, every song, the world wouldn't be the same without these two brilliant comedians,

I never took drugs at that age until completely understood what these guys tried to convey. I appreciate who these two represent (even tho I wasn't apart of that scene) I enjoy their art now.
Two of the funniest comedians EVER!!!! Grew up with Cheech and Chong listening to their albums back in Michigan, no less. That's how good their entertainment was as it reached all the way back to the Midwest and beyond.

I was a teen (in NY!) when this hit the theatres...What a pisser this was. Weed (lol) get stoned and go see it...probably saw it 10x. Great times, great weed, and great memories.

Simply the greatest and most influential comedy duo of all time in my opinion. Ground zero for the genre of "Stoner Comedy."
Omg... I would watch this movie every weekend for years and still laughed my head off every time, I’m 54 now and still can enjoy it. It was the movie we all needed to chill and just laugh and laugh.
First time I ever heard these two guys was the Christmas recording in the 70’s. Still funny to this day straight or stoned! No one will ever be comparable to these beautiful people!

Tommy Chong came to Appleton WI in 1994. I saw his stand up. He was hilarious. I love these guys. Some of the best comedy ever made. Rolling a blunt for both Cheech and Chong.
When this came out it hit so hard with us younger high school kids. We laughed and laughed the entire movie and then talked about if for months in class laughing the whole time. .
We were so lucky to have thier influence early on in our younger lives... Thank you cheech and chong! Thank you to all the fans. Thank you for helping us smile laughing. Let good times roll.

This filled in a lot for me. On the commentary on the DVD, they didn't really explain very much. It truly was historic. And despite a shallow plot, brilliant.

79 was a breakthrough year for me. Already being a fan at 15 years old, that movie is still with me. Having the opportunity to meet Tommy was a highlight for me, for sure.

The brilliance of Up in Smoke is the alloy of: A buddy movie. A road movie. A divine quest movie. +pot. And somehow manages to have character arcs that reach high but end where they start.

Phenomenal. These guys are so smart and there’s nobody else like them on the planet and probably never will be. These guys have given me so many laughs over the years. They are perfectly suited to each other. Very very clever men and they didn’t know it when they were young. it it’s just just a unique gift that had to come to the forefront.

My wife and I had seen "Up in Smoke" and loved it, a couple we ran around with hadn't, they were fairly straight laced. We got a call and they wanted us to go with them to see "Cheech and Chong's Next Movie", when it got to the part with the necrophilia I thought the gal with us was going to faint. My wife and I laughed so hard I thought we were going to need oxygen when we left the theater. Up in Smoke was great but the scene where they stole the 57 Thunderbird and got gas all over them when they used a garbage can to steal gas to fill it up and then burnt up the interior when they lit a joint is one of the funniest skits in any movie. The whole movie had me blown away.
I saw this movie in the theater back around 1978. Believe it there were actually guys like this everywhere back than. Watched the movie at least 100 times and still laugh my face off!! Bravo guys Bravo!!!!

These guys were the best. I have a cousin who could have been Cheechs brother. Drove the same 64 Chevy Lowrider and was ridiculous funny. He made working in the grape vineyards of the Central Valley California fun, if that is even possible. Had their albums, watched all of their movies first run, and to this day still say quotes from their best stuff. Timeless comedy that has stood the test of time.
My life would not be the same without this movie....all their movies

At 8, 6 & 2 my kids would go around doing the whole "Dave's not here" bit, they thought it was the funniest thing ever, it was, and still is, needless to say I was proud, though living in Utah, my neighbors and other parents didn't hold the same appreciation.

One time my buddy and me got hired by a lady to move her furniture, We rented a U-HAUL van and got stoned and were moving her stuff. Anyway, I was on the truck by myself and her dog, an old German Shepherd brought his choo toy up the ramp and stored it on the truck. That was really cool, he was a good old German Shepherd. Anyway, then I was moving one of her pieces of furniture that had drawers and a mirror on it, but the mirror was covered with a blanket, and the blanket fell of. I was so stoned, that I called my buddy and said "THIS LADY HAS A PAINTING OF ME MAN." True story.That was the way it was in those days, I knew so many people like Cheech and Chong, that was before hard drugs and in the stoner days, just a little bit of time before the Tate murders, back when that window opened and we went through it, and then we all climbed back in, or most of us did, and the window closed.
Milder weed to , I gave up smoking pot when I gave up cigarettes around 21 , but tried some of this Hydro stuff a couple yrs back just to be polite . . & holy hell ! got tunnel vision & all , these modern strains are,t fun , if I ever go back to pot it will be bush weed cookies .

I saw up in smoke when I was 14. It was at the drive in and my bff and I hid in the trunk to get in. We came out through the backseat. It was a double feature , that night, with the Warriors. To this day, I will be 54 on Sunday, Up In Smoke and The Warriors are my all time favorite movies! Great memories and really great times! Yes I started young. A wild child. My boyfriend was driving the car that night and he was 18. He would so be in jail in today's world.

My first experience with Cheech & Chong was in the early '80s. I was a kid walking through the living room one night and seeing my old man in his chair laughing his ass off at them on Showtime. I started watching and have been hooked ever since. Chong has always cracked me up the most with his passive humor. Very fortunate to grow up in the late '70s and through the '80s. "Back when the Universe meant something" Ashley Roachclip. Dope A Thon '82.

The settings of Cheech & Chong can be translated into just about any comedic plot, insanely funny, nobody got really hurt, situation applicable to anybody and easily acceptable by most young people. I enjoyed them in the 1970s. What a hoot they were.🤣😊😸👍👍👍
In the year 1978, two instant classic movies came out; on July 28th, Animal House and on September 15th, Up in Smoke. I was 17 years old and all I wanted to do was smoke pot and drink beer...and I did! Good God what a great time to be alive man!

When their comedy album "BIg Bamboo" first came out, it made it to the top of the charts because it was hilarious and also because the album cover was an actual giant sized pack of bamboo paper. Everybody wanted to roll a giant joint !! They were the kings of comedy on stage and in the movies.
Well, the album cover wasn’t a pack of papers, it had one giant paper enclosed.
We did roll a big bamboo. Oz and used grape jelly glue man. Smoked 45 mins man. Roche had 4 j,s man!
