Cheech & Chong actually did win a battle of the bands contest without playing any instruments. They just went up on stage and did improv comedy that cracked everyone up.

Tommy Chong is a truly talented guitar player. Anytime he's on-screen playing guitar, it's really him.
I live in a small town called Appleton, Wisconsin. My niece works at a music shop here in town. About 10 years ago she sold a Fender Stratocaster guitar to Tommy Chong. I happened to be in the store and met him. Obviously, he was much older then, but I'll never forget hearing that familiar voice. I'm in my 60's now but meeting him made me feel like a kid again.

I'm in Vancouver, BC... the birthplace of Cheech and Chong. Tommy Chong used to own a club called the Shanghai Junk... a topless bar. C&C used to do comedy sets between dancers. It's now my bank. I saw them onstage a few years ago, and they said Up In Smoke was based on the stoner culture of Vancouver. Sgt. Stedenko was based on real-life Vancouver undercover drug cop Abe Snidanko. After the movie came out, his cover was blown, so they had to ship him to another country. C&C sent him an autographed photo when he retired. 😋

    • @michaelbinbc
      @michaelbinbc 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Another fun fact: Tommy said they got high while making this movie, but they waisted so much film, that they never filmed high again. 😋
And other fun fact: Just 2 blocks south from Shanghai Junk, was Vie's Chicken and Steak House... Jimi Hendrix's grandmother Nora, was the cook. Jimi stayed up here for a bit as a child, then returned after being discharged from the army. He used to practice at Vie's after hours.
His grandma Nora is famous in her own right. One of the first settlers in Vancouver, co-founded Vancouver's first black church, and was a community organizer. Her house is a heritage home... Hendrix House, and she's the first black woman to have a street named after her in Vancouver. She's also on a Canadian Heritage postal stamp. She was an amazing woman.

I knew this one would be perfect for you. 😄
If you watch Cheech & Chong's Next Movie (that's the title), you'll get cameos from Paul Reubens, Edie McClurg, and Cassandra Peterson.
If you listen to their albums, you'll get a cameo from people like George Harrison playing on their songs. They were basically rock stars by doing their comedy.

I coughed my lungs out and after two hits was high as a kite. I asked what the fuck was that and the dude replied " Oh, that was just some some horse shit I had". Those were the days.

My mom and dad went to see them live in Memphis in 1980 or 81. Before C & C started the show, a guy came out on stage and sat on the edge. His shirt pockets were stuffed as full as they would go with joints. He started lighting them and handing them out to the audience. My parents were in the balcony, but my mom went down and got one. The place was totally smoked out like the Alice Bowie concert.

Imagine watching this movie with 8 Post Teenage High School Freaks, Dropping Acid and Smoking Pot in a Chevy Impala (like Cheech's Impala), at the Drive-in movie theater in 1978, and you will know that this movie, was all about us.
From the 60's, through High School in the 70's, and everyday after, we lived this movie. In deed, Up In Smoke was like a validation of who we were.
As stand up comedians, they released their first album "Cheech & Chong" in 1971 and quickly rose to fame as we would all gang up in the car, and drive around smoking dope while listening to them on the radio. And girl, I could tell you some stories.
Needless to say, Cheech and Chong quickly became our heroes. Along with Led Zeppelin, of course.
But yeah, those were the days.

I could legit hop out of bed any time day or night with no rehearsal and get up on stage and act out this entire movie scene for scene, word for word. Front ways, backways, sideways, slantways and any other ways that you can think of. And up until now, I've pressed them all Charlie...

Grew up listening to Cheech & Chong plus George Carlin albums. Heard all of Cheech & Chong albums before I smoked a joint or drinked alcohol (drinking age was 18 then). They were funny when your sober. Lots of their album skits was in Up In Smoke. But I did see this movie at a theater & home video stoned. So I went for it.
They had a hit few years before with the song *"Earache My Eye".* The song in the film played by *"Alice Bowie"* (A cross between Alice Cooper & David Bowie) was that hit single.
I loved the ajax lady in this film. Music was great. And I didn't stare at that guy's neck.

And the closing number is "Earache My Eye" from their "Big Bambu" album. In fact, everything you see is basically from all of their albums, including the bird's "Dave's Not Here" routine. The nuns were from the "Sister Mary Elephant" bit.

The OG stoners. You should have seen this at the drive-in. Some forget that both Cheech & Chong are very talented musicians which they include in many of their movies. Now, since you've started, you must do "Still Smoking" and "Nice Dreams", along with some of the non-stoner movies like "The Corsican Brothers" and "Yellow Beard" which is a collaboration with the Monty Python folks.

I got to comment on my favorite "if you know, you know" scenes.
    "The Led Zeppelin Joint"
After they smoked that huge joint down to 2 inches, they pass it like it's a tiny roach.
    "El Roach-O"
That is the moment Tommy Chong became the king of stoners. Anybody can smoke large amounts of weed, but Chong lit that tiny roach with a match, got it to hit and smoked it till it was gone.
    Hail to The King, baby.

Two years before "Up in Smoke" arrived in theaters, the edgy comedy film of the summer of '76 was "Car Wash". It all takes place in one day at an actual Los Angeles car wash (located at Rampart and 6th St at the time). Richard Pryor and George Carlin appear. It's a slice of life, ensemble cast, comedy with a some drama.
    Subbed.

One of the cool things that happened while filming the movie was that the battle of the bands captured some of the first American punk bands early in their career. The filmmakers asked them to make themselves sound bad, which is why some of them appear a bit awkward. Some of the other Cheech and Chong movies are pretty good, although they slowly veered away from stoner comedy. The two had a falling out in the 80s, but got back together in 2010.

This movie is a classic, love it. I remember sneaking a listen to my brothers cheech & chong records in the early 80's!

For context a "lid" is an ounce, and for $100 in 78 translates to almost $500 per ounce. Prices like that now are only in DC and Illinois

If nobody put it up yet Korn covered their song 'earache in my eye' from the end. Cheech also performs.

The song they played on stage (earache my eye) made it to number 9 on the top 100 billboard chart, all by accident of course. true story!

One of my fondest memories is of watching this with my dad, he laughed so hard when Cheech asks "we're smokin dog shit?!" he literally began to weep he was laughing so hard. I miss my dad, happy holidays! Paper comes from tree farms grown to make paper. Don't worry about trees.

The name of their band, Alice Bowie, was a spoof of "cross-dressing" artists Alice Cooper and David Bowie. Chong's red outfit has on it the logo of a popular brand of quaalude from back in the day.

The comedy alblum cover, the actual record sheaf, was a rolling paper dispenser with a rolling paper large enough to roll that "cigarette" they were smoking in the car at the beginning.

That ol' El Camino you dreamt about, you really wanted the interior that I presumed 16 year old boys just imagined girls liked! Guess I'm proven wrong, these kids know what's going on! 😀My first car (at least when I had a license) actually was a '73 El Camino SS, however not with your desired styling. I only kept it for a year though, I wanted something to haul more snatch in. Since then I've grown to hate having people in my car, but have never gotten another El Camino. Maybe I should?
This is a fun movie!! I don't remember right now if it's got one sequel or several, but there is at least one and you should watch that too.
Thanks for uploading! Greetings from Sweden

When I was in college a lid was $30. That was a full four finger ounce of fine Columbian. We were outraged when it went to $35 by my Junior year and $40 by my second senior year.
