Hello, I wanted to tell you THANK YOU! My 2010 Nissan Altima broke down in the Mojave Desert 3 days ago. I’m 58 years old and was driving from Orlando, FL to Sacramento, CA to work a temporary assignment in the Cath Lab. I was alone and had no idea what was wrong with the car but after a Google and TH-cam search, using the description of what I knew was happening, I found your video. I got down on my knees on that 107 degree desert pavement and followed your instructions. The car had to be towed to Mojave, CA (which wasn’t cheap) but I had the driver drop my car in a motel parking lot. I told him I knew what it needed. I got ahold of NAPA auto parts in Mojave but they did not have the part but it was at a store 25 more miles away. I asked if they would please go and get me the part so I could be on my way. He was kind enough to do that while I waited 4 more hours in that car in that parking lot. He called to tell me it was there and I walked 2 blocks and got the part. I changed it myself and the car started! I want to tell you I’m still amazed that I fixed it but you helped me do that. I made it to Sacramento after almost 6 more hours of driving. I was in that desert and Mojave for 7 hours! I can’t thank you enough! FYI: it’s called a stoplight switch and secondly you say to turn to the right but actually when you push it down to engage it’s to the left. Respectfully, Angela Murphy
Can't believe this actually worked. I thought my starter was bad until I checked out a few videos. Car sat for over a week but gave it a shot and it turned over and started. Thanks a million thought I was going to have to get it towed somewhere. 👍
I didn't drive or start my car for 4-5 days due to extremely cold weather in the Midwest. Today, car wouldn't start & the brake pedal was very stiff. This helped me!!! Many, Many Thanks!
Dude my family was on vacation and the Nissan we rented wouldnt start. We were stuck in a parking lot. Thanks to you I got the car to start and looked like a freaking genius. Thanks for the vid!!!!
This video I believe detailed exactly what caused my daughter to be stranded by her Altima yesterday. Messes with the shifter first, no luck starting… slammed the pedal could times and it started. Told her drive it home and fine turn it off. Thanks, super Fawkin helpful!
OMG, just pushed down on the top of the brake switch and presto, brake went soft & started right up! Sounded way to simple to actually work, but it did. Thanks Eric~!
Thank you so much! I watched the video while on hold with the service department, and was able to fix my car on the spot, can’t express my gratitude enough, thank you!
The thing that worked for me was pressing HARD on the gas and brake at the same time and repeatedly trying to start. After a few tries it finally came to life
OMG my car was stranded for 4 days off and on. I thought it was my key fob and I almost spent $400 on my appointment this coming Monday and all I did was just push the break switch down and it started again. Thank you so much for saving me and my family.
Thank you Eric....it just happened with my wife's Altima at a shoping mall parking...luckily I was near by and seeked help from (youtube)...people like you make our lives easier 👍 god bless
Thank You!!! Just had over $4000. of work done, was driving for several days then wouldn't start, I heard a little click when I pushed the connecter back in and started right up! Appreciated😁
Bro straight to the point!!! Short not too short yet sweet information!!! Super helpful !!!!!! Thank you !!!! Explained the issue to the dealer and they quoted me 175 just to run a test to find the problem then they would charge extra to fix and for parts…. I watched this video… found the plug took it out cleaned it placed it back (didn’t replace it / but ordered extras to keep). Worked like a charm
Eric, thank you so much i didn't buy anything i just did a little push on both and it WORKED!!!! after watching so many videos i have no idea where to go. You saved me. Thank you for making video and sharing it with us and making possible to find that video(correct title of the video is important part also). Appreciate your help!!
Thank you!! Thank you!!! While waiting for roadside assistance, I googled possible problems (actually was trying to find out how much this may actually cost me). I tried the first option and my car started right away!!! AMAZING!! I was stuck for over an hour and I cannot believe how easy this fix was. Thank you so much for posting - you saved me hundreds from just a tow and diagnostic. :) :) :)
Thanks soo much for this video. I initially thought it was my starter, so I replaced the starter with a new one but still didn’t resolve this problem. I just removed the break switch plugged it back again then booooom 😅. Returning the starter for my $250 bucks now. Thanks 😊
Omg thank you so much i waited for two hours and the car won't start and coincidently i opened your video , i did what you did and it worked thank you again🎉
I really appreciated finding this video BUT, your instructions for removing the switch could be better. I found that the best steps were (1) disconnect the switch/harness from the mount by turning it a quarter way and pulling it up, and then (2) disconnect the switch from the small, four-prong white wiring harness by pressing the white "button" and pulling out the switch. No screwdriver needed. Also - AND THIS IS HUGE - it turns out that if you do step 1 and leave the harness hanging with the switch still connected, you can start the car without pressing the brake. I wish I knew this last night before leaving my car in a garage overnight.
My 2010 Altima is having same issue on and off sometimes with brake pedal being stiff and engine won’t start. Do you think it’s brake switch need replacement?? My check engine and abs & Slip sometimes would light up too !
Helpful video, but you don’t need to jab a screwdriver into the top of the white harness connector to detach, you merely depress the “bumped out” side of the white connector with your thumb and pull and it will detach from the black switch housing.
You are AWESOME. Thank you so much. My 2015 Altima didn’t start and I did wiggle it as you said and BOOM, it starts. Unfortunately your link doesn’t work to me? I tried to modify but it keeps saying not fit to my car.
Thank you..this video did the trick. Pushing down on the switch. Thanks for sharing, keeping it simple, focused on the solution instead of trying to impress folks with ya knowledge like some people
Awesome you are the man. I am still in the process but the AAA guy after jumping would not work and he said the battery was fine, I started looking into it more because the car worked Yesterday. Will let you know the final result but the insert brake light being on while my foot is on the brake AND like you said the peddle is not going down.
Cool now I know what to fix for both the crusecontrol and start switch. Learn so much from good guys that don't mind sharing information to help the little man save a dollar $.
Thanks for the help my nissan 2010 wouldn't turn on since yesterday thought it was the battery so I took it out and got it checked but that was fine, saw your video and moved the switch around and it turned back on though I have to keep moving it to turn it on again so for sure thats the problem thanks saved me some money going to the mechanic.
Big time help! My brakes were locking up..car wasn’t starting..battery was dead but..similar issue continued after battery was replaced…was thinking starter but this video immediately got me I totally he right direction with the brake switch…unplugged the switch put it back in…boom! Car turned back on! Thank you!
Would that be the issue have 2008 altima wont start dash lights up and turn off when I push start the second time just hear very like ticking sound brakes are little stiff when trying to start it now
My maxima did this, and the previous owner already pulled the fuse. My husband looked at it and couldn't figure it out, so i had it towed to the shop. It was the starter and they said is was a pain to get too another 700 bucks, i put in engine mounts, front and back brakes, stabilizer bar, ball joints both. All in a year. So i hope thats it, it runs nice and is fast its a 2010 SV, i love the bose sound system
Hi, I did buy the switch and the car turned on after a few attempts to get it back on. I move the cables. I turned off the light that was on in the back seat and I close the door and I locked and unlocked so after a few minutes, it did turn on but right now I went to the store and as I was trying to turn it on it was having a hard time turning on, but it did turn on, so I’m wondering if it’s something else also or if it’s just that it’s the new part and it’s still just starting to work
Hi Eric- mine is a 2010 altima manual so in mu case I press the clutch instead of the brake. O didnt see something like this for the clutch but I believe both brake and cluth might use the same one? Thanks for your help!
O'Reilly's told me it was the safety neutral switch. It wouldnt crank over til i have to put it in neutral then drive and back in park. So were they right or could it be that i need to change the battery
@jaredsage8854 meaning when you start up the car without pushing on the brakes. So then you can't put your foot on brake and then put it in drive neutral then back to parking. Then start the car. So I never changed the part and car has been doing okay
Ha! Hi Eric! I'm a RentPrep subscriber and listen to your podcasts sometimes. I'm helping my brother with his Nissan Altima and browsing through DIY videos for it. I clicked your video, and thought, "Man, this guy really sounds familiar!" So random. Thanks for the vid!
Kevin Osborne that’s too funny. I get around. I actually got involved with RentPrep because of these videos as they were looking for someone to do this for them so the agency I worked at pitched what I was doing on the side and eventually got hired by RentPrep full time. Always a small world. Hopefully your bros car is fixed.
Can the car just die while it's running and not restart due to that brake switch. I'm looking to buy an 2005 Ultima with a 2.5. with chief complaint from seller that it died while driving it and won't restart. Do they turn over with a bad switch or not?
Okay people I just had this exact problem. Turned out to be the ECU fuse. ECU Fuse! I changed the Brake Light Switch, The Battery, The Key Fob Battery, and beat on the Steering Wheel Lock Mechanism. Then I had her towed to Nissan. They Blessed me. ECU/ECM was not communicating...ECM/ECU Fuse was blown. They only charged me for diagnostic and the fuse. $93.
Man thank you so much we were having t this problem with a Nissan Sentra 2017. We were stranded at the store looked it up came across your channel. And well the car started right up. .. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank u sir, luckily I didn’t have to replace it I just pushed it down and wallah, if I ever do need to change it I will make sure to use your link, thanks again man.
i had a problem with my 09 altima i replaced the starter and ecm under steering still wont start brake switch works cause it have brale lights when i pressed the brake pedal . no even crank the engine just heard a little noise on the starter but wotn start, i need help thank u
I need help as well I'm having the same problems as you I have replaced the battery today I have replaced a fuse today on the stereo everything was driving fine I parked the car for 20 minutes I come out and it won't start I press down on the brakes I push down on the start button and I hear a small click nothing more
first thing is is the engine "rolling over" when you try to start it. if its not even turning over its probably this break sensor, or either the battery is dead or the starter is 9/10 times. If the engine turns over but won't run on its own. you basically need to check for 5 things. Fuel, air, spark, compression, and timing. most of the time if the engine turns but wont stay on the issue is a Fuel, or spark issue. fuel pump, spark plugs, distributor cap. just research inspecting an engine that either wont turn over or will turn over but won't keep running.
Hi Eric, I have a Nissan 11/2012 . I checked what you recommended and the engine does turn but will not start. I checked to see if the fuel pump works and gushes out like a fuel hose fine. I checked to see if I was getting current to the engine block manifold and that checked out as well. Is it possible that my fuel jets in the manifold may be clogged and need to be cleaned?
My brakes are stiff but they light up I brought a new steering wheel lock tried plugging it up and still car won't start key light shows up on dashboard but control can still unlock car could it be something else plz help asap thanks
I have a 2016 Nissan Altima and I’m having this problem I replace the switch and it’s still doing the same thing. Was wondering if there’s anything else to check. The dashboard is telling me to press the brake still.
08 altima manual shift. Similar switches under clutch. There are 2! One is more visible than the other. Reach upward in line with clutch and you'll see 2nd switch
hey i have a 2009 murano with the same warning lights... and i won't start... everything i dead i keep thinking is the battery i jump started and it won't hold the charge. would the break switch cause this to happen?
Thanks so much. The video was clear and specific - and it worked perfectly. It saved me from having to have the car towed and would probably have cost $250 all in.
Eric! You are the effing man!!! I had this exact issue and just fixed it by myself for $16! That's saying a lot for a guy who knows nothing about cars. You saved me from having to tow my car and probably paying $100 for an auto shop to fix it. Thank you so much for creating this video.
Eric - Thank you, you're the only one I found that talked about the break being "stiff". I have this issue and the engine won't start. The key fob is fine and has a new battery in it. I even tried the intelligent key port - no starting of the engine, and the brake is too stiff to press down. I followed your procedure, but wanted to know...how I do I know for sure that this is in fact that I need to replace the brake switch (pressing down on connection didn't work)? Is there a way to inspect the switch to determine it is faulty before just buying a new one?
Thanks for the comment, I couldn't find a good video on this topic so I figured I'd make my own. The easiest thing to check is if your brake lights are not working properly. If they're intermittent or not working at all you have a bad brake switch most likely given your issue with the tight steering wheel. I also found this on the web: "A faulty brake light switch can cause many problems. If a switch is bad, the brake lights won't operate and the transmission shifter will not come out of "Park" position. In cars with a push-button start system, a faulty brake light switch can cause the vehicle not to start. Often, a brake light switch might be sticking and work intermittently. This can cause the Check Engine or ABS system warning light to come on on the dash. In some cases, brake lights may stay on all the time, or come on randomly, without pressing the brake pedal." Source - www.samarins.com/glossary/brake_light_switch.html I do appreciate if you end up using my Amazon affiliate link if you think your brake switch is the problem. Also, if you do please let us know if that fixed it for you. Link to Amazon Brake switch Listing: amzn.to/2EgnZrq
@CW I ended up asking my mechanic about this. He said that the brake switch is simply just relaying a current by making a connection. So when the brake is pressed your car knows to light up the brake lights. He said 99% of the time if both brake lights aren't lighting up you have a bad switch, he said to test it try removing the brake switch and then sticking a paperclip into the slots to make the connection (no electric shock will happen, it's just a low voltage currency). If you can light up your brakes with the paperclip but not with your brakeswitch you have a bad brakeswitch. Hope you got your problem resolved.

Plus I had no tools at all. But for whatever reason it had no screw as you noted
That’s great Angela. I’m happy I was able to help and you were able to continue your trip. Thanks for the kind comment.
Angela- please report this to the NHTSA. They are the ones that will make Nissan either fix it for free or reimburse people that already paid.
This video was a lifesaver! Almost missed my graduation ceremony because my car won't start, this video got me going. Thank you!!
This video is still helping people 4 years later lol. Thank you for posting! Such an easy fix and O'Reilly had the part on hand.
Did the brake lights come on with the bad switch? My brake lights come on but won’t turn on.
Straight facts 😂❤

Hi Eric,
I have a Nissan 11/2012 .
I pressed my fab against the start button and it started. But I'm going to the Nissan Dealership to have them scan my fab.
just did it and it worked, thank you.
My brakes are stiff but they light up I brought a new steering wheel lock tried plugging it up and still car won't start key light shows up on dashboard but control can still unlock car could it be something else plz help asap thanks
When the brake switch is faulty does the tail light and shifter still work?
Hi I did buy the part and it turns on now but with alittle struggle won’t start up fast. Feels like it wants to stop.
Thank you! Just one question...When this does not work, does that mean that the brake lights will also NOT illuminate? Is that a quick check?
Thank you so much!! You saved me hundreds of dollars in roadside assistance! I subscribed, liked and told a bunch of people. You are great!
I have a 2016 Nissan Altima and I’m having this problem I replace the switch and it’s still doing the same thing. Was wondering if there’s anything else to check. The dashboard is telling me to press the brake still.
Same here did you ever find the issue?
I replaced this part on my vehicle and it still doesn't work. Tested the old one with a meter and the switch seems fine. Any thoughts on next steps?
Wow! This fixed my issue! I was being told it was my starter BUTTTT this fixed it! So happy right now!
Your a life safer dawg I’ve been stuck at my work for a little over an hour!
Wow they looks easy went to the nissan dealer they charged me 350.00
08 altima manual shift.
At home many miles does this start to happen?
How much would this repair cost with a mechanic?
Thanks so much. The video was clear and specific - and it worked perfectly. It saved me from having to have the car towed and would probably have cost $250 all in.
Dude, this saved my life today
Eric! You are the effing man!!! I had this exact issue and just fixed it by myself for $16! That's saying a lot for a guy who knows nothing about cars. You saved me from having to tow my car and probably paying $100 for an auto shop to fix it. Thank you so much for creating this video.
Love seeing these types of comments. Thanks man. Glad it worked for you!
I also found this on the web:
"A faulty brake light switch can cause many problems.
In some cases, brake lights may stay on all the time, or come on randomly, without pressing the brake pedal."

I do appreciate if you end up using my Amazon affiliate link if you think your brake switch is the problem. Also, if you do please let us know if that fixed it for you.

@@ProBuyersGuides Thank you and yes I will both use your link and let you know what happens. I appreciate additional info & assistance.
@@ProBuyersGuides opposite I think. Pressing the brake makes the switch open
I'll try this! Because it takes 5 to 12 times to actually start.
