  • In this video we upgrade a standard rotary cable steering system on an outboard motor to a NFB, No Feed Back system and show you the difference. If your boat's steering is tight, or you are always holding it one way or the other to stop the motor torque from steering the boat this video might help you understand a little more about the different systems and how to fix your tight or pulling steering.

I have a 1991 Wahoo 18.5 CC with a 150 mariner. I cannot let go of the wheel for a second while underway or the boat will go into a spin. I just purchased one of these based on your video. +1 Subscriber

Thank you for the explanation. I thought my steering was just stiff. Will have to check my helm to see if it was upgraded to the e no feed back system.

Got me a 2001 Seaark with a 90 hp Mercury. How do I know if i have rotary or NFB? The steering is very tight and also pulling to one side . I am in the process of cleaning/lubing the tilt tube grease build up and adjusting the trim tabs. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks

If the steering pulls to one side you have a basic rotary system. Once the steering gets tight, we generally replace the helm and cable assembly. It is often the cable itself that has tightened up over time, and because it is tight the helm has been overworked, not to mention it is usually over 20 years old. So for the few extra dollars we replace the complete helm and cable. In your application, with a 90 hp I would also upgrade to a NFB helm. Basic rotary systems are not recommended for your hp levels any more.
