When I was a little girl growing up in a beautiful neighborhood in Detroit, I spent two weeks trying to catch this song on the radio. I never could hear the whole song all at once! Finally, on the "Quiet Storm on WJLB" I heard the artist's name and was able to buy the cassette. I know this comment dated the hell outta me but I have to say how long I have loved this song! 😂❤👵🏿
I dunno if I'd categorize him that way....this album was so classically influenced, and so beautifully produced, I think of it as soul/prog, kinda. It's mostly unique to him, with that fantastic songwriting, wonderful arrangements and THAT VOICE.
Seal is the male version of Sade. His first 3 albums are all amazing and his debut album "Seal" is a masterpiece ("Crazy", "Future Love Paradise" and "Deep Water" each are excellent). He also does a great cover of Steve Miller Band's "Fly Like An Eagle".
Fun fact, not sure if anyone else pointed this out: Seal wrote and demo'd this in the late 80s before he was ever signed, and it was a pretty basic acoustic ballad that he was kind of embarrassed of and never showed anyone. Whilst recording with Trevor Horn (founder of the Buggles of Video Killed the Radio Star fame and producer of a bunch of artists to this day), Horn coaxed Seal into letting him hear it, and then came up with the arrangement you hear on the final track with the strings and oboe and stuff. It got released as single to middling success, but then got a huge bump off the back of Joel Schumacher using it on the Batman Forever OST.
I believe Joel asked if Seal had any songs for a specific scene in the movie. Trevor sent Joel the album with that song marked out. Schumacher came back to it and said the song was very beautiful but he couldn't fit it on the scene in quesiton but he would find a place somewhere in the movie to put it. That place was the second song that plays during the credits. That's according to an interview Seal gave to Vertex Effects a short time ago.
When you consider the fact that Seal didn't play an instrument when he wrote this song is extraordinary. TH-camr and musician Rick Beato (with an assist from Seal) break down just how truly remarkable musically this song is.
By listening to it, you really can't tell how unbelievably complex this performance is. I watched a deconstruction video on this, where the guy pulled it apart to hear all the individual parts that are going on. The vocal alone is like 8 layers deep of some really complex harmonies. Like F#13m-augmented stuff all over the song. Very cool and deep respect for Mr. Seal.
Seal was huge in the 90's with a multiplatinum album, with several hits and this was his biggest winning multiple Grammys. Such an ethereal song with multiple transitions like a symphony. A true masterpiece.
Kiss From A Rose is my all-time favorite song, of ANY genre... It is so beautifully composed. Seal actually says he had no idea what he was doing when he composed it, which tells me it all came from the deepest part of his soul. If I could only listen to one song for the rest of my life, this would be my pick
he’s a british singer whose parents were brazilian and nigerian. his most famous songs are „killer“, „crazy“ and „kiss from a rose“ which is part of the batman-soundtrack. he also sang at the freddie mercury tribute concert the song „who wants to live forever“ with the remaining members of queen.
I played the shit out of his first album - he is smooth as glass and a freaking amazing talent. He also is a big snowboarder - I'd love to make some powder turns with him, he seems so down to earth. MORE SEAL PLEASE - Crazy, Future Love Paradise, Prayer for the dying, Bring it on etc etc - all super stuff. Check it out!!!
I lost the count of how many times I reproduced the first two albums 🤣 Honestly so many incredible songs!! I had the opportunity to see him live here in Chile about 3 years ago and it was magical!
I saw him at Chicago channel 11 soundstage 10+ years ago...and he told the story of how this song came to be. He has great dance hits too! 'CRAZY' was his first hit. It's so amazing! One of my fave songs ever.
I'm so glad you reacted to the song. I consider it one of the best songs ever written of any genre of any time. And his performance to be perfection. I could listen to this song forever on replay and never get tired of it. I don't know who put the soundtrack together if it was all Seal or if he had collaboration but the beginning with the flute and the voices is so very medieval It t sounds like musicians playing at a medieval court before the king and queen. And then he comes in with that gorgeous voice and he just adds layer upon layer of a kind of a pop rock r&b sound. The lyrics are absolutely swoon worthy. I don't know how anyone can hear them and not feel the emotion he's singing with. Perfection!!
Wife here..Amazing song..Loved This Song! Takes me right back to the ninties!..His song "Crazy" is Awesome as well..You two do have wonderful chemistry!...Appreciate your insights..
He did a live version just before lockdown, with a UK orchestra & he sounds exactly the same as the studio version. It's so beautiful . It's on YT . It was for a radio station.
@asia girl I love your reaction!! The facial reaction... I'm feeling the same thing you are feeling. Seals voice just does something!!! I love this song & Seal has some other good ones!! ❤❤❤❤️
i went crazy when this came out. i think it's beautiful! Rick Beato has a video called What Makes This Song Great where he interviews Seal about it. Great video on youtube. This song was from a batman movie.
I think if you reacted to his first hit which came out in 1989 you would be amazed Seal was collaborating with Adam Tilney and formed Adamski singing their number 1 hit called Killer but you must watch the video that accompanies the song you will see a young Seal with Dreads, great funky song.
Others may have already suggested this, but you have to check out Rick Beato's break down, with Seal himself on video chat. Always liked this song, but liked it even more after watching that
I laughed and laughed during this video only because I was saying to the screen- “You know this song Asia. There is no wayyyy you don’t know this song.” And then ya did hahaha great reaction!!! One of the most beautiful ballads EVER WRITTEN. Period.
At the 1996 Grammy Awards, "Kiss from a Rose" won awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
It was featured on batman forever soundtrack too.that was an amazing time.seems forever ago.but still an amazing song

Odd that it made record of the year in 96' when it came out in 94'

Seal is really just UK Adult Contemporary - he mixes soul, RnB, rock and even English folk.... very creative
And dance too, I think.
Pretty sure he co-wrote killer with adamski.

"Crazy" should be next. Mine and Alannis Morissette's fav, SHE covered it!! 😁

Love me some Seal. My favorite Seal song is “Waiting For You”.

One of the great love songs. He has an amazing voice.

Speaking of "Crazy", Asia, listen to Seal's version of "Crazy". Superb!!! In fact, I'm going to listen to it right now. Seal is sublime.

The acoustic version just does things to me. What a voice.

Everytime i hear this song it always reminds me of the movie BATMAN FOREVER with Val Kilmer and Jim Carrey 😍
