  • The second day fishing the river Helmsdale . the weather was a balmy 4 degrees above freezing but the breeze made it feel quite chilly . there were some that didn't travel to far to fish and Dave one of the experts from the river Thurso was out having fun along with the novices . It was great to see so many enthusiastic anglers out .

    well done Iain I am just catching up with your 2024 youtube adventures. As usual a very enjoyable video of what looked cold and difficult conditions but in some beautiful locations. Thank you for sharing and tight lines for 2024

      It was the first time fishing on the Helmsdale Stephen and I think that I was lucky with the weather. After we left to come home it started to snow and the main road south was blocked ....... what a great place to be stuck but I had to get home to feed the cat

      I have several holes in my Jacket and in the past had to get hooks removed from my person Daniel Its just part of the dangers of living .
      My brother had to be air lifted of the mountain while skiing and now in hospital so I think a wee hook up or even getting bitten by a kelt is quite tame Keep at it you will find body piercing becomes less the more you practise Cheers Iain. 🥃

      Hi Steve I hope you had a relaxing time over the festive period and this year brings you all you deserve . we had a good couple of days fishing for January. the weather changed the day after we left and the main A9 was closed because of snow and at the moment the storm is now hitting Scotland . I think we timed it right ... Take care of each other . Cheers Iain 🥃

      Its good to watch an expert unhook a fish .. The Kelt on the first video bit me while trying to get the hook out and it has taken until now for my finger to heel. David that unhooked my second kelt told me that most anglers that get bitten by a kelt have problems with infections. I told my brother about my escapade with the fish and he suggested I make a video of the dangers of fishing ...
      On the first day of our fishing trip he was over skiing in Italy and had to be air lifted of the mountain and then driven by ambulance for nineteen hours back to a hospital in the Uk
      and may need surgery to repair the Brocken bits
      It's all about having fun but it can be more painful skiing than fishing Take care Cheers Iain. 🥃

    Nice video I do have a question to your tackle early season
    What rod do you use
    What line brand/type and sinkrate
    What river level and temp!
    Thanks in advance

    • @IainSB
      @IainSB  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the rods In have vary Lars . the rod I am using on that trip is a 12ft 7wt and I have a 9wt Rio Scandi Short Multitip using the floating section with a sinking 5ft polly tip on the end . The air temp was around 5 centigrade and I never took the water temp but know it was cold. the love of the river was 1ft 8inches above summer level the river is not deep and fish will come for the fly
      when I am fishing bigger rivers at this time of year I will use a 13ft or 15ft rod with a skagit and various fast and intermediate tips . depending on river heights . I think that most running fish swim up the margins and its best to let the fly come right into the side and that is where its wise not to fish to deep
      I hope this helps Cheers Iain. 🥃

      @@IainSB Much harder to hang around ina fast winter spate river getting strength back than a freshwater lough all right. I know of a few very small rivers where fish come in very late to spawn and are gone back out within a few weeks. Fish spawn in the Currane system from mid-December on and you'll get kelts in March if it's a dry winter. I'm hearing that lot of rivers in SW of Ireland had a very (big!) late run of salmon into December. Very unusual though not unheard of. Redds and spawning fish everywhere, big surprise because it was such a poor season everywhere in Ireland.
      Have you heard of anythig similar in Scotland?

    • @IainSB
      @IainSB  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was out the last day in November for a few cast but more for a sortie The reds that had been cut were so large it had to be monster fish a friend that had been fishing in the last week of the season a couple of miles below Cardrona had several fish over 20lb and one that was over 30lb he also saw other anglers that caught very large salmon 🥃🥃

    • @IainSB
      @IainSB  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Andy the angler that usually gets the first fish of the river suggested that I fish a floating line with a sinking pollytip and a weighted fly . The flies I used all had a cone head just to give them a bit of weight . I always take the advice of experts

      @@IainSB very interesting! It's my first spring season and just had my first session on the Tay. Using sinking heads for the first time was a bit of a revelation. I imagine the helmsdale is perhaps not as fast flowing and deep as the Tay so using a sinking head is maybe overkill!

    Why make videos of catching and playing out kelts?? 100 + day tickets a day fishing for spent fish!! A lot of these fish won't make it now after being caught and played slowly on a fly rod.!! It's too early.Wise up !!!

    • @IainSB

      everyone is entitled to their opinion . Based on facts not opinions WE were trying to catch spring fish . it is a fact that Kelts are as tuff as old boots and it is true that there skins were used for making shoes they were that resilient . Another fact is that colours fish and kelts do not shed their scales and if handled with care have no ill effects. It is the spring and fresh fish that some anglers have a problem with . If they are handled scales removed they will get infections that will kill them. I have seen so called experts after handling fish are covered in scales once they have held fish and taken photographs . I think that you are pointing the finger in the wrong direction if you are looking to conserve fish
