    Geologist here with a lot of time spent on frozen lakes performing geophysical surveys.
    Thanks you for the video.
    Another item that can help if the wind and temperature conditions allow it is wool outer wear like a wool jacket. Wool when wet will often stick to the ice surface and help you when you are trying to climb out of the water onto the slippery ice surface.
    I run my ice picks through the arms of my jacket/parka like kids mittens so that they are there near my hands if ever needed.
    Also, if you are on snowshoes on the frozen lake/river, ALWAYS, ALWAYS undo your harnesses or loosen them so that you can get out of them if you break through the ice. If you go through the ice and can't release your snowshoes you will die.
    Once you are out and safely away from the hole you have to run to the bush where you can start a fire. Run as it'll warm you up and your clothing will be freezing up and will make movement more difficult as time passes.

    falling through ice is like getting stuck in quicksand, it's a much smaller problem than I ever thought it would be but it sure as hell doesn't hurt to learn how to get out of it

    • @77Avadon77
      @77Avadon77 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I once got stuck in quicksand and it is scary as hell. I use this exact same technique to get out of it. If you struggle and you stay up right you will sink even deeper in quicksand which is really just liquefied mud. If you can get your feet broken free and lay flat you can paddle yourself back to Solid Ground. Animals don't really understand this concept and they eventually Tire themselves out and drowned in the mud

    Adam, you've done an admirable - and life-saving - job of illustrating what it will be like to fall through the ice, and what to have on your mind in that critical first minute.Anyone watching this will know what they should do to get themselves out - even without ice picks.
    Also, from a panic avoidance perspective, you've made clear that you probably have a fifteen minute window to allow the fire department to arrive and to save you ...just avoid panicking!! Many thanks.

    If your discomfort saves one life(maybe more), it will be worth it.
    If anything, you proved to yourself it can be done.
    Question: I had read that putting your forearms onto the ice will allow your forearms/sleeves to freeze/stick onto the ice and will assist you as well. In my mind that would take a while or not be enough to help to pull yourself out.
    I was wondering if you noticed that happening at all?

    Huge respect! I fell through the ice this morning rescuing my dog. We're both OK. I was skate skiing for 20mins before going in up to my neck so the water didn't hit me as hard as poor Adam. Especially on the second and third dunks, yikes. I didn't panic but it was scary when I had to break ice for several feet to get back to a solid enough patch to climb out and pull up my 80lb dog.

  • @marjamada
    @marjamada 10 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Nicely done, thank you for the excellent demo. If the edge of the hole one falls through is solid, as it is here, self-rescue is straightforward. It's strong enough to allow you to crawl out. What I want to see is a technique to get out of thinner ice that keeps breaking off. Does anyone know how to deal with that?

    • @Pikepolefishing
      @Pikepolefishing  10 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      Assuming you're trying to go back from where you had initially been walking, you would still use the same concepts described in the video. The ice was strong enough to hold weight prior to a person falling through, so solid ice is most likely very close. You may need break away some thinner ice to get back to stronger ice, but that should only take a short time. Hope that makes sense and helps answer your question.

    I've been through the ice on two occasions...once I was young and dumb, the other stepping over a pressure crack that opened up more than when I was on the way out. This is a very informative video. The most informative is DON'T PANIC! Great job. Everyone should go to their local FD and ask when they are training and get involved with taking a plunge, if you are one to go onto the ice. I practice cold water submersion off my kayak in 50 degree water, just to be ready! It does help to prepare.

    Great video, I wish I had seen it BEFORE I put my car through the ice on LITTLE STURGEON in Door County WI. I was able to get my car door open and escape the vehicle before the vacuum effect kept me in my car. After exiting my car I sank below the surface and then floated back up. I was able to get back on the ice and made the mistake of standing straight up and trying to WALK to thicker ice I plunged right back into the icy water. I had no picks, ice suit, just a plain old pair of Lakes and Rivers snow bibs. How I’m sitting here alive and typing this comment is unbelievable, I was able to get back on the ice a second time and this time I barrel rolled at least 10 feet away from where I went down the second time. I was very lucky that I made it out alive as there are so many fellow anglers that perish in the winter. I have, since my harrowing experience bought myself an Otter Pro sled that I rigged up with a chest pulling harness from Clam. An Eskimo FatFish 540, a Clam RISE FLOAT SUIT, a pair of HT ice picks that I wear ALL season long around my neck. I have even outfitted my wife and daughter with float suits and picks!! Please keep one thing in mind when fishing in hard water, NO ICE IS EVER SAFE! However being prepared for every type of scenario is your best bet! Again, thanks for the video and I KNOW it WILL save many lives. P.S. I feel your pain brother!!

    But what do you do when the ice around you breaks?? The more you try the more it breaks??, that's my concern i hardy ever see the ice stay in place, especially when it's not pre drilled like it cracking under you where you fell in?

    • @stevefm
      @stevefm 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spot on. I'd like to know too. I guess if you keep trying to lift your torso onto the soft edge using your hands as he does here it could just keep breaking underneath you. Eventually the ice will hold or you will make it to the side through a channel of broken ice but you might run out of energy trying.

    • @stevefm
      @stevefm 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rabby Kin Sounds worth trying, but I wouldn't bet on being able to gain enough momentum to carry any of yourself onto the ice unless you are a very strong swimmer and have 15ft+ lead up. And as you walk across the ice before you break through you have likely created lots of thin cracks which could open up on you as you try to get back on it. But I can't think of anything else to try. The best tip must be do everything possible to avoid being on thin ice in the first place.

    • @stevefm
      @stevefm 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rabby Kin Good tip. But even thick ice if it has stress cracks can give way. Try throwing a 20lb boulder onto it. The force of that dropping onto it should be greater than your footstep.

    Great demo. That's exactly what you have to do. I broke through the ice on Walden Pond, while skating in 1980. I had the advantage of forward momentum. As soon as my legs broke through I started kicking and dug my fingernails into the ice., clawing my way out, One quick motion and I was out of the hole and sliding away from it. I only got wet up to my waist. I was 50' from shore and a long way from the parking lot.

    i want to see the video conversation of you guys planning this video. also thank you brother i appreciate the lesson ,that took balls. i discovered last year that im one of those assholes who loves ice fishing so much that testing weak ice, in the middle of the night,by myself, is not off the table. i needed this. ps i have invested in proper float suit,safety gear, and took the time to go out and practice using it. hopefully minimizing the likelihood that my obsession with hard water angling will end me.

    Thank you for toughing it friend! New to ice fishing and fear this happening.😊
    May I share with you, The Gospel of John, to allow, Jesus, to save that precious soul of yours if, He, hasn't already. 🔥

    You are so brave, to do this unpleasant job, to teach others about how to do if needed.
    Still though... Better just to stay on solid ground in the first place 🙂These last few days the news have been loaded with stories about numbers of people risking their (and others!!!) lives. Even families with babytrolleys almost having picnics out on the ice!! What are they thinking??? On one occation a car broke through the ice... How stupid (sorry to say) is one allowed to be???

    I really appreciate him doing that but I had to laugh because the dude at the camera @ 3:09 straight up said “this is just stupid” Lol but I really appreciate him, showing us how to survive! They had a moment where he couldn’t believe he was actually doing it. Lol.😂😂😂😂

    I'm really not sure whether to call you brave or stupid. Lol. I would have said brave for sure if you went in once, maybe twice, but 3 times? I'm leaving towards the latter lol. Thanks for showing me this though, and I hope I never need the knowledge.
