    Learn a life-saving self-rescue skill essential for all outdoors people who venture out into winter. By learning how to reduce your cold shock and get yourself out of the water with these techniques, you can save your life or help someone who has fallen through the ice to save theirs. This technique is designed for use in still water, such as a lake, and will work even if you are wearing bulky clothes. It allows you to move your body up onto ice that cannot support your standing weight, and teaches how to move over the ice until you reach ice with weight-bearing capacity.
    If you are wearing skiis or snowshoes, you can first move through the cold shock portion of your self-rescue, then calmly attempt to raise your legs through applying even downward pressure with your arms on the ice shelf and arching your butt upward, followed by extending your legs out behind you. If successful, gently pull yourself forward. If this is unsuccessful, you must attempt to remove the skiis/snowshoes, or if necessary to save your life, your boots.
    Cold water immersion is a potentially life-threatening situation. Do not attempt unless under professional supervision. This video was shot at the ReWild University training grounds in Wisconsin by a highly-trained wilderness instructor with rescue staff in attendance.

    I watched this video for the first time about three weeks ago. Coincidentally, my dog ran onto a half frozen lake today and fell through the ice. I felt confident enough to try to retrieve him because of this video. My little buddy would not have been able to get out without help. I was able to crawl on the ice, and even after falling in a couple of times, I was able to get him back to shore. Thank you so much for making this! It was a life saver.

      I know, and thanks for recognizing that. When it started circulating on FB, a licensing company contacted me and said we can restrict usage and make some good money on this. I gave it some thought, but ended up feeling like this information needed as wide of circulation as possible. I ended up getting much greater rewards than money or views, however -- I've heard from a number of people whose life has been saved by this technique, and someone who rescued a mother and child using it. That is truly priceless. Thanks for watching and appreciating, Nikolay!

    Living in Minnesota, we get advice about this stuff, and more often this year since the freeze came late in the season, and a lot of folks don't realize the ice hasn't yet set up on some of the lakes. We've already had a few folks go through the ice, usually on ATVs and snowmobiles.
    Yours is a very good, succinct tutorial! The only thing I'd add is when you're getting back out of the water, try to go in the direction you were coming from. You know that THAT ice is strong enough to support your weight. Another addition you made that I hadn't heard discussed much is to get a grip on your cold shock, and strategies for doing so. Hopefully, like Made Man below, your advice can help people avoid tragedy.

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You've pointed out an important point here, and I'm sorry I didn't include that point. Sorry to hear you've had some people go through -- going through in an ATV or snowmobile is bad news indeed.
      =) Kenton

    • @blinkvideo
      @blinkvideo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ha! No worries. As I said, this is a great tutorial! And it'll save lives!
      Your demonstration involved falling through ice adjacent to open water (and thank god, it was prolly scary enough to voluntarily go into really cold water for a PSA), but in Minnesota, we have a lot of big lakes where folks will often be out, far from shore, and go through. Ice fishing, stupidly driving a vehicle out before you know the ice is safe, etc. It's not so obvious where to scramble to. The "go back the way you came" thing is useful for those situations.
      But you totally covered the important points:
      1) cope with the cold shock
      2) kick, as if you're swimming, to bring yourself horizontal
      3) use the kick to "swim" on to more stable ice
      4) keep your center of gravity spread out until you're well onto that more stable ice.
      I really like your channel. I would like to buy a kjort. =)

About your video dealing with mosquitos, it reminds me of a story that an ascetic monk surviving in a top mountain himself didn’t get much bug bite neither, perhaps your theory works apart; it might also be the gene, way of eating, smell, or one’s psychosomatic harmony with nature. Though the best way might still be the gears or mud on skin to avoid the bite&virus XD.

    Another great video.
    I fell through the ice on a fast river when I was about 12. I saw snowmobile tracks and assumed it was safe.
    Thank God my elbows caught the edges of the ice, my head didnt go under. Somehow I instinctively twisted my body and rolled out of the hole. I knew enough about hypothermia at the time to run as fast as I could back to where we were staying. By the time I reached the cabin I could barely feel my fingers and toes. I didnt lose any of them, but to this day I am nervous about river ice.

      Wow, so glad you found this helpful! If you search about, you might find a "polar plunge" fundraiser, or even a ice swimming group in your area. This video is super helpful, but even more helpful is finding a safe group to actually do some ice swimming with -- then it ceases to become a fear and can actually become something you seek out. In any case, so glad this could be of service, my friend!!

    Very good demo. I crashed through the ice while skating on Walden Pond, in 1978. I didn't wait. I fell forward, using my forward momentum. My legs were wet so I immediately kicked to raise them out of the water and clawed my way away from the hole. I never looked back. I think I crawled 25 feet before I stood up. From crashing through the ice, to getting out of the hole took 5 Seconds.

    Many people probably have died falling through the ice simply because they have believed a myth that it is impossible to climb back onto the ice simply because it is too slippery they say. As long as the ice is solid, I never had a problem. The kick is very important and I have found having gloves on gives you a real advantage.

    Woah, the water under the ice is flowing too. That increases that rate that it removes heat from your body (like the way wind cools you more than still air).
    Respect to the guy for doing this. People who haven't dipped in icewater don't realize that it becomes extraordinarily physically painful after just a few seconds, even putting your forearm in icewater, you'll feel extreme urge to take it out after just 20 seconds.

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get the feeling you've experienced this! And you're absolutely correct -- flowing water takes away much more heat than still water. Glad to hear from someone who has felt the intensity of this kind of cold!
      =) Kenton

    • @mr.mohagany8555
      @mr.mohagany8555 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, no I don't know if I could get myself to jump in icewater. I just saw a museum exhibition where you stick your arm in water the temperature it was around the Titanic, I couldn't believe how quickly it became literally painful! The part about knowing something flowing removes heat quickly was from taking a physics lab.
      Good video, and cool that you brought up mindfulness, too.

      We've been so happy to hear from a number of people who have saved their own lives with this technique. The best story for us was of a young man who had just seen this video, and a few days later he was walking along a path and saw a boy fall through the ice. His mother went in after him and fell through too (often multiple people die in this manner). The young man felt confident enough to slide right in there with them, talk them into a state of calm, and help the boy out, then the mother. Then he did a self-rescue. A true hero!!! =)

    So glad I gave you a sub. You showed firsthand how it's done TWICE. That was really something! I never fell through ice but I used to do a lot of backpacking in very rough areas because.....I was nuts but I did read very much on wilderness survival. I once 'had to'' swim down a cold creek at night that had cliffs on both sides and I could not see where it ended, so I put all my gear on my air filled sleeping mattress and swam as I pushed it along, it was a longer swim than I ever thought it would be and when I finally reached a flat spot on the shore to get out, I was shivering so bad I was about useless. Like you said, you have to fight through physical and mental anguish and do what you have to do.
