  • Late last year an uncrewed New Shepard lifted off apart of the NS-23 mission carrying over 30 payloads. Just past 1 minute into the mission and a booster anomaly caused the capsule to abort via the escape system. Soon after, the booster fell back towards Launch Site one while the capsule deployed its parachutes and eventually touched back down on the ground.
    This was the first failed New Shepard mission since its maiden flight and completely halted Blue Origin’s program. With New Shepard commonly carrying humans, the company began an investigation to figure out exactly what went wrong. Just yesterday, Blue Origin released a full NS-23 findings report going over exactly what happened.
    It turns out that the direct cause of the NS-23 mishap was a thermo-structural failure of the engine nozzle. Despite the findings, it looks like the next crewed New Shepard mission could be right around the corner based on new information. Here I will go more in-depth into exactly what caused the failure, what this means for the New Shepard program, future human launches, and more.

    Sounds like an acceptable “fail-forward” learning episode. I wonder why BO gets flack while someone else always gets a pass?
    Also a great clarification on the nothing-Burger “breaking news” item. AND speaking of, what about the delay on Dream Chaser that is going to mess up the first Vulcan launch schedule that was promoted to great fanfare by “where’s the beef”.

      I've just had a brilliant idea, why don't you create a channel that does exactly what you want, and we will all subscribe to you until we cancel you because you didn't satisfy our desires. Did I mention we are fickle? That alone should qualify us to be allowed to view your awesome channel.
      Thanks for being such a good sport. 🤣

      @@IbnBahtuta Actually I don’t have to create a channel, this one is already great. It covers a wide selection of items without bias and more importantly does NOT suck up to one particular company / person. AND has journalistic integrity which I don’t think is the case for some other space information sources. If u don’t get your hit of kook-aid here, maybe u will feel better by restricting your diet to some other more sycophantic channel.

    Interesting. I originally thought it was a fuel valve or related problem.

    It does sound as though the streaks in the engine nozzle are indicative of incorrect operation of the engine. What is the explanation by BO for not recognising these streaks previously after a flight

    Even if this is their final mistake it will take years for them to rebuild their reputation and convince customers that this is a worthwhile ride for a few seconds in space.

    • @steveaustin2686

      According to Blue Origin they have not lost customers and some want to try the escape ride. How true that is, we don't know.

    A few years ago I stopped at The Museum of Space History in Alamogordo. They have an F-1 engine on display that one can touch and learn that the stainless steel bell has little channels that rocket fuel is pumped through to cool the bell. How does a larger bell solve the BE-3 heat fatigue problem? Was the solution thicker material or more cooling or more surface area heat distribution and won't any of these solutions merely put off the mean time of bell routine maintenance replacement?

    • @eddjordan2399
      @eddjordan2399 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      a large bell dos"nt solve the problem. you must remember that f1 only had to work a few times ie. testing then flight. the be3 needs to be used and reused multiply times so its most likely a flow issue with the cryo fuel through the bell of the engine. i dont know how many times this engine flew but i guess it was too many times for the cooling it had.

    • @steveaustin2686
      @steveaustin2686 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The BE-3U is the vacuum optimized version, which is why it has the bigger bell.
      For engine cooling, there are multiple methods and most reusable engines use the tiny tubes in the bell, throat, and around the thrust chamber to pump cryogenci propellant. That cools the parts and also heats up the propellant making both work better.

    Can't help but wonder how much more "transparent" Blue Orgin would have been over the New Shepherd failure had Bezos been on board that day. Curious to see how the Vulcan's BE-4 Engines hold up as well w/ all the production problems it's had.
