Just a note for transfer students... I received this scholarship as a transfer student from a California community college. There is no interview process, as they said in video. I was first accepted to the university and approximately a month later they phoned me and offered the scholarship. I think each UC school is different. I received same scholarship offer from UC Santa Cruz but they sent offer with my acceptance letter.
I had 4.0 GPA from my community college. Many CC transfers have 4.0...your essay will likely be the determining factor. I was 27 years old when i applied to Cal and those extra years of working and living life are an advantage when the time comes to write your admission essay. Start working on it early. I spent several months working on that essay and it paid off.

exballet202 hi I also received this scholarship! Could you tell me if it covered your housing as well or just tuition? How much of the total cost of attendance did you pay?

@@prettylibra It believe it depends on your expected family contribution (EFC) that fafsa determines. While scholarship is merit based, i believe the amount you receive is need based. At least that is how it was. Because i was older, they didn't take into consideration my parents and i had an EFC of 0. Situation then was that the scholarship amount received was based on Cal's estimated cost of tuition plus room and board, minus your EFC. So i had it all covered though I took small loans to cover some extra costs.

Just want to add to this (and echo what exballet202 said). I was a transfer student from a community college, and got the scholarship. I didn't even know it WAS a scholarship! So it was a great surprise as there was no interview or application process.
For everyone applying, know that it's just people on the other end reading these applications... and they usually skim through them quickly, so telling a compelling & moving story is key. Also, it's not an evaluation of merit. For example, UCLA declined my application (which I got before I heard back from UCB... so I panicked, as usual) .... yet UC Berkeley admitted me and gave me this scholarship.
From my time at UCB, I think they mostly value tenacity, resiliency, and honesty (humility) above all else. I don't think it's about how 'good' you are, or how much positive impact you make in the world... but how you struggled and persevered, and even how you are still struggling.

Is there any way for me to take a tour? How would I be able to learn about the campus other than youtube videos.

especially due to current pandemic that is happening. I was planning on going for Cal Day but I heard they canceled it.

I got interviewed through Zoom so that may be an alternative instead of having to travel to Berkeley or Irvine
