Personally I use pro knees, straps go around your calves. They can be ackward at first but 100% worth the price. Start 5-6 rows and what you cut off to finish a row can be recycled back to start the next row. This will eliminate a lot of waste. Use another tile as a square and it's one less tool to carry around. And scribe your cuts by overlapping a full piece and you won't need to measure and cut rips.

What did you do for under the counters? I saw that you put composite shims but for the vinyl did you just run it under the counters and cut out around the legs or stop once you got under a little bit?
I just bought a roll of 1/8 inch eco cork underlayment. I'll install my vinyl flooring over the top. it doesn't hurt to use thin underlayment for this job. I'm installing more for cusion. definitely feels less hard when walking on it.
Be aware that unapproved underlayment may void warranty on vinyl plank. Usually at least one type is specifically approved - the stuff I am using specifies high density foam or nothing.

Do you have to use a expansion gap on this stuff? I’ve heard they only leave one for “maintenance purposes” when it comes to repairing a jacked up one.
I've wondered about it. The instructions say "yes" but some googling shows the thermal coefficient of expansion for PVC (which is what "vinyl" planks are made of) is between .005% and .007% per degree C. Installing vinyl plank in temperatures below 10C (50F) is as cold as I would want to get when working with it. If it gets 30C hotter (104F... I lived in Phoenix in a former life) a 50 foot run will lengthen about an inch. A ten foot run will lengthen about a quarter of an inch. Why the gap is given as a quarter inch regardless of run is a mystery to me.
Ya I'm a flooring contractor and I do like 5-6 hour days because I want to walk then I'm 40. I REALLY recommend you buy a marshal floor cutter tool ($200) and just keep it right behind you or right in front of you so you don't even have to get up to cut straight cuts on the stuff that's too thick to just cut with a knife. Why does my new vinyl laminate flooring instructions say it could contain asbestos do not saw or break I'm really confused put on down it shows you using a jigsaw and instructions to cut holes
@9:12 .....it does hurt! I'm 55 and I'm in the process of doing 1500 square feet of it! My only saving grace is knee pads and a heavy steady supply of pain pills! Lol! All kidding aside the knee pads plus a rubber mat under my knees has helped tremendously! I'm just pacing myself and when I start hurting too much I take a break.
i installed vinyl by sitting down, boss was watching and eyeballing me, after few rows he saw i could bend enough to install it way easier than being on knees ^^ or atleast less demanding to body also dont u need molding/roster or w/e u call it under doorways?
I guess my comment from yesterday would fit better in today's video. "I appreciate you building that 'backwards' to avoid the transition strip." So many times I see people just starting the same flooring in each room and putting a strip across the door. This looks so much better when it is seamless!
Most floating laminates and engineered hard woods, per manufacturer specs; call for transition strips at all doorways. To allow for expansion and contraction. Not sure about this stuff though, I would never use it........
Shifting is a problem in some cases. A local flooring place did half our house including the hallway. In the hallway several of the planks have shifted, making gaps peek from under the baseboard. I had to remove the baseboard and put small nails in 1/8 inch from each end to control it. Where the planks adjoined carpet in doorways no both sides at once, somehow the planks shifted a full 4 inches (!!) and refuse to shift back. No matter to me - this month they are being replaced by planks that will connect each room. No more carpet.
Vinyl flooring makes it easy to get under the toilet. Remove the toilet, tape off the flange, and lay it right across. Cut the hole around the flange and life is good. Removing the toilet also makes all work behind it _much_ easier. I betcha there is baseboard a few inches back there.
How much did you charge for that job? Sorry if you already answered that, I really don't want to read through all these comments. Lol. Also, for knee pads, I never wore them before either until I hurt my knees about nine months ago. I hate the straps too so I just throw the pads on the floor where I'll be kneeling and kneel on them unstrapped. It's an extra step to keep moving them along with you all day, but it I think it beats the hell outta having those straps digging into the back of your legs.
nice job. that stuff looks pretty easy to work with. but even though its "waterproof", if there's another flood, wouldn't it still have to be pulled up due to trapped water underneath? I prefer volleyball player's knee pads.
Alright Please Educate me. Is it a bad Product. Or do you just not like it? I am about to help my parents put either the vinyl or laminate down and they are leaning to vinyl. Just want to know before they spend a lot of money. Thanks
Its a great product for certain homes. I only want real wood, stone or tile in my house. A lot of people are putting it in their homes. Its just personal preference
The Handyman ,I agree and would prefer hardwood myself. Only I have two dogs ,two kids and three cats. So for now, I went with vinyl planking. When the kids and dogs are gone, I’ll go back to hardwood. Not to mention for what I paid, I could have dine wood flooring.
Wow. I'm really happy that you get such constant busines. If I quoted my customers that price they would laugh in my face. Maybe you live in a more well off area.
My home was built in the 30's and believe me nothing is sq or level in this house. When I put my laminate flooring down it was a pain in the ass. I kept thinking how in the hell did they level or sq. something up back in the day, and I think I know how. They had a guy name Bob standing there and they would yell out "HEY BOB!!? This look straight?" After I got the flooring down I sealed it with clear epoxy resin and OOO MY DAMN it looks beautiful. Not only did it protected my flooring but it's waterproofed, scratch proof, high gloss, and easy to keep clean.
Good old Plumb Bob. Better performance on any day but Monday. I dunno about resin on it, though. It is possible to repair a damaged plank floor. My wife didn't notice when a car pulled her coffee cup warmer off the side table and it landed upside down on the floor, scorching it. When I get the rest of the floor done I will replace those two planks.
Still dont understand what you mean by installing it backwards. Are you just saying that because you're on the other side of the flooring? Or are you physically putting the boards opposite of how they're supposed to go in?
hung nguyen - Generally , you install this type of " click " vinyl flooring while working from left to right . On the front and the left side are tabs that fit under other pieces when they meet . It is the easiest way to install . However , as you work your way around a room , it is not always possible to do it the easiest way . If you put some of those pieces in front of you on a table , you will see what I mean . After you back your way across a room , you have to put the tile together the same way BUT working from a more awkward angle while kneeling on tiles you have already installed .
It’s a lot easier to install when you are on the flooring you already installed, 90% of the fold and lock can be done with no tools other than tapping under door casing and using a last board puller or shoe mold lift on your last row to click it in
Nice work. I know you always work alone. And I also like to work alone but i feel on flooring or tile where you could have a laborer cutting while you are installing it is a lot more efficient and easier on your body. what are you thoughts? I would not have commented if you hadn't complained. I have access to $12-$15 / hr. laborers that can handle this type of cutting.
Does this brand flooring allow for reversing the floor, by using a dovetail type dowel that put in groove than can....well you know what I'm talking about, lol 😉😅 Wondering if possible with this kind of floor brand etc.... Cheers, A
I was expecting you to put a threshold in the hallway door but you carried the floor through the doorway.I thought it was recommended to use thresholds after so many feet of planking to help keep an expansion joint between large areas.

@ Mark Shiflett This type of flooring allows up to 6400 sf with out an "expansion strip"
so this flooring is just layed down with nothing holding it down but weight? couldn't it shift over the years?
Its called a floating floor. Very common these days.
So do you put vinyl flooring under a toilet or around it ?
Under would be best.
Vinyl flooring makes it easy to get under the toilet. Remove the toilet, tape off the flange, and lay it right across. Cut the hole around the flange and life is good. Removing the toilet also makes all work behind it _much_ easier. I betcha there is baseboard a few inches back there.
Why is padding not needed for concrete floor ?
How much did you charge for that job? Sorry if you already answered that, I really don't want to read through all these comments. Lol. Also, for knee pads, I never wore them before either until I hurt my knees about nine months ago. I hate the straps too so I just throw the pads on the floor where I'll be kneeling and kneel on them unstrapped. It's an extra step to keep moving them along with you all day, but it I think it beats the hell outta having those straps digging into the back of your legs.
I charged $6000 for this job
@Pfaff1911 I dont think your getting robbed I think he is price gouging. Typical contractor
I've been flooring for 2 years now running jobs I work 6 days a week and I can feel it in my knees and my joints ect. I'm 24....
nice job. that stuff looks pretty easy to work with. but even though its "waterproof", if there's another flood, wouldn't it still have to be pulled up due to trapped water underneath?
I prefer volleyball player's knee pads.
Yes. There is no flooring that will survive a flood that is a few inches deep.
Love your Videos. What is your opinion about vinyl flooring? Do you Like it?
I would never have it in my house.
@Michael Breaux, A good quality vinyl has some advantages over wood laminates. The vinyl will give you a softer sound and is waterproof.
The Handyman ,I agree and would prefer hardwood myself. Only I have two dogs ,two kids and three cats. So for now, I went with vinyl planking. When the kids and dogs are gone, I’ll go back to hardwood.
Not to mention for what I paid, I could have dine wood flooring.
sry if i missed it in vid but what kinda price per sqm for just the labour do you recommend for flooring like this
I charged $5 per square foot on this one for the labor
Does the $5 psf include floor prep if needed? Or would that be extra?
Includes me sweeping the floor. Thats it.
Wow. I'm really happy that you get such constant busines. If I quoted my customers that price they would laugh in my face. Maybe you live in a more well off area.
You have to be trustworthy with an amazing reputation in the business. Being a decent salesman helps too.
Good job looks awesome
Shops in Florida only pay $1.25 Sq Ft to install LVP
I found knee pads that were all material. No plastic. They were great. I think I found them at Harbor Freight.
Cloth & foam. Very comfy.
How much gap should be used?
1/4 inch around the outside.
you dont put isolation underit?
No
Still dont understand what you mean by installing it backwards.
The "right" side is the one where you see the tab sticking out on the pieces already laid. Working the other way is difficult.
Around here $12-$15 per hour will get you a drunk with no car and a extensive criminal history.
@@TheHandyman1 Not those types. The type that speak little or no english.
that doesn't work for me.
This is why I love TH-cam.
Does this brand flooring allow for reversing the floor, by using a dovetail type dowel that put in groove than can....well you know what I'm talking about, lol 😉😅
Wondering if possible with this kind of floor brand etc....
Cheers, A
No
Would you recommend this type of flooring in a bathroom or laundry room over tile? I currently have tile but I want to switch to the vinyl plank.
yes
Barwalt blue knee pads
I was expecting you to put a threshold in the hallway door but you carried the floor through the doorway.I thought it was recommended to use thresholds after so many feet of planking to help keep an expansion joint between large areas.
4000 sf before expansion joints for this flooring.
Is that a dead mr cat with horns??
what did you charge
$6,000
that is awesome. im a electrician. i recently started my own business
@@MrC9Oh3 no way Haha I need 1000 sf done il fly you from Texas to Chicago and give u 3k and I will still be saving half lol
i NEED TO DO 17 HUNDRED FT" OF THIS gRRRR
👍 thanks again !
Now do sloped tile flooring to vynl doorway transition :D
Thanks for the video =)
How many boxes did you end up using???
All of them. I had a few pieces left over.
All 10 boxes, 20 boxes?
I have 52 boxes for 889 sq feet. At this point I'm wondering if 10% extra will be enough.
Sounds like Bubo is in there giving you tips on the flooring.
The knee pads are uncomfortable but they save your knees in the long run. Remember the pain at the end of the day before taking off your knee pads because they are uncomfortable.
Bullshit u dont need em stop eating meat so u dont have arthritis in your knees. Im 315 6ft6 been doing this type work for 23 years vegan for 13 years. Take care stud
@Marty Forkwater How long have you been a Homosexual?
@@TheHandyman1 I'm dying 😂
Haha
@@sirjohnahayfalcon, I find it very amusing that Vegans are constantly pushing their eating habits on everyone. If you like it and it works for you, that's great, but stop trying to shove that vegetable shit down everyone's throat for Christs sake.
I'm watching this on my couch with ice packs on my swollen knees... after doing almost 1k sq ft
Why vinyl in a cold basement?
100% waterproof. (Not the same as impermeable, but the vinyl itself won't be damaged by moisture or floods.)
I did flooring for 12 years and never found a comfortable way to kneel and work, my knees got jacked up from spending 40 hours a week on the floor. I got a Job as a Cad operator in 2000 and never looked back. I still have nightmares about going to install tile floors lol.
Those kneepads how I love thee let me count the ways.
You need to invest into a tapping block. Will save you lots of time.
Any expansion joints?
every 6400 sf with this flooring. This was only 900 sf
New subscriber here just wanted to say well done and am enjoying your videos, must be nice with no helper when it comes to cashing the check from the owner.💰
It is. Thanks for watching.
Yeah fuck doing flooring its just annoying you mentioned your knees and hands but for me my neck would be hurting like hell
A Drafter must have built that basement.
A tip for you, learn to use transition strips on jobs like this, it makes the job much easier and less prone to separating in the future but just my two cents, job looks great.
Dude you are hardcore for using a regular Hammer. I would never do that.
I’m tired and in pain from just watching!
I did about 200 sq feet of the 900 sq foot total in our house last Wednesday. I was amazed to find that I felt better that evening than I do being a couch potato as I have been in retirement. My 69th birthday is next week.
I think pace and doing enough but not too much (tighten it until it strips and back off a quarter turn!) is great.
May want to brush up on some of the specifics.
I watched a few of your flooring videos.
I am a master certified floor mechanic of 26 years.
All in all good video.
Read the spec sheets.
That is hilarious 😅😅😅😅👍
@@TheHandyman1 You didn't even put hinges on your floor - what were you thinking?
I see I'm not the only one who whistles while they work
Great job....I feel your pain...lol
Come to Wyoming and I will get you an antelope way bigger than the one in your intro.
