- Marissa and Jacob Lyda earn a combined income of $124,000 and live in Portland, Oregon. Here's how they split finances as a couple and purchased a home after tackling nearly $90,000 worth of student debt.

The couple, who met at Corban University in Salem, Oregon, and got married in July 2015, paid off all of their student debt in two and a half years, mostly thanks to their living situation. They still paid Marissa’s mom some rent - $200 a month - “but it allowed us to dump almost all of our income, after paying insurance and paying all of our other expenses, to debt,” says Jacob.
After becoming debt-free in 2017, they celebrated with a Caribbean cruise and moved into their own apartment, but their lifestyle didn’t change much. That made it easy to save for a home, adds Jacob: “We were already in a very frugal mindset because we had come off of paying down so much debt.” Rather than upgrading their lifestyle, they redirected the money that previously went toward their loans into a house fund.
In the fall of 2019, after saving a little over $20,000 for the down payment, the couple closed on a $428,000, four-bed, three-bath house in Portland, Oregon. Today, with a baby on the way, they have shifted their financial priorities with a goal of saving a $25,000 emergency fund.
Marissa earns $45,000 a year working as an accounting manager for a non-profit. She works four, 10-hour days - Monday through Thursday - and spends the bulk of Fridays working on her side business, The Budgeting Wife, which has evolved from a blog she started to document the process of paying off student loans into a personal finance brand.
It took a year and a half to start monetizing her platforms, but today she has more than 33,000 subscribers on TH-cam and makes about $27,500 a year between The Budgeting Wife and freelance video editing projects. Her business expenses run low: $400 per month. She spends $200 on monthly subscriptions and equipment, and puts $200 toward a business savings account for any big, future purchases she wants to make for her company.
Jacob works in product marketing for a software company and makes $51,500, putting their combined total income at $124,000. They live comfortably, but earning more is “always something to work toward,” says Jacob. “It would be nice, especially since we have one child on the way, and if we decide to have more children.”

As a matter of fact, I barely buy anything for myself at all and I still can barely save a couple thousand a year since I bought my house and had my children. The only "debt" that I have is my mortgage as I paid off my college loan within 5 months of graduating and and I own both of my cars so yall must be making well over 100k/yr to be able to save 10-12K a year! Must be nice!
@@dgyrlc1123 Well, I cant speak for everyone but I make 6 figures. But the only debt I currently have is my car note, and mortgage. No loans no credit card debt. So I can easily put back about 2K a month and have plenty left over to spend for the month. I have a kid too (16 yr old).
But, the key is simply to live well below what you make.

It’s a different atmosphere, the cost of living in the inner city is way different than the outskirts. Tillamook, Wilsonville, Tigard, Beaverton, etc are not considered Portland, you’d live outside of Portland. This video was terrible representation of Portland.

Don Givani the big thing too is making it palatable. If younger students don’t see the value in it at the time they are learning it they won’t commit it to memory. I was blessed to have an Econ teacher in high school who actually made his curriculum super relatable and easy to apply. But I’m sure a lot of Econ classes are just dry boring high level concepts.
This isn’t in Portland proper and “moving in with my parents” is not what I would call “being smart with finances”.
They’re killing the game because they aren’t living in Portland lol. Any Portlander knows this isn’t Portland. Neighborhoods don’t look like this in Portland. This is a gated community in Wilsonville where the cost of living is waaaaay cheaper.

Probably me and my husband, I am a housewife, no side hustle, we are able to get through because my husband is good at managing his finances, he got a house a car, debt-free, but we are now startimg to save for emergency funds

I also live in Portland Oregon. One of the highest taxed highest cost of living states in our nation. Our governor is corrupt our mayor is corrupt and our entire political system is corrupt. They protest every night there’s homeless on every street property is overvalued there are no jobs. Crime is out of control. And this couple acts like Portland Oregon is a beautiful place.

I was impressed when I saw that. One thing I've seen in the USA is that its (somewhat) easier to save than it is here in the UK because graduate salaries are generally higher, especially for engineers, so it kind of sets them up for future financial success.

This is just the right information towards financial freedom as well as wealth creation. Nothing against them but their parents paid for the wedding, and they were able to live with their parents.... Also sounds like they didn't come from poverty or at least 2 parent homes. This is a good example for middle income children but maybe not for those from lower income families or single parent homes.

well it's really not that hard, a 60k a year salary is pretty feasible for most people with a HS degree and some computer literacy. you got to get experience though, but in my experience it's usually one spouse works other is a moron.
I LOVE the fact that they donate $750/m (probably tithing). Generous people attract wealth and become richer. This is only beginning for them.

Thank you for this helpful video of a couple that definitely lives in Beaverton and also lived with family until their debt was paid off enough to allow them to buy a house. Totally realistic and universally applicable.
No one said universally applicable. Money struggles can happen no matter what the income. People making millions mismanage their money sometimes on a HUGE scale. Their story is no less worthy of being featured than someone who did not have the same advantages.

Good work! But the income and budget seem a little off. The income is stated at $124K. The spending budget is $109K, so I assume this is also equal to the net after-tax income. But that would indicate state + federal income taxes of only 12%, which seems too low. Oregon state income tax runs 7% - 9.9%. I think they should re-do their spending budget pie chart to show state & federal income tax. And $400/mo for food, if accurate, is excellent! I spend $400/mo for food for one person.
They are using tax sheltered accounts like HSA, 401k etc
Exactly this makes no sense. You have to pay more tax that $20k a year when you're earning $124k
I think their take-home pay is around $100K, because they are contributing to 401K and Stuff, and also use Donations and also House Mortgage as a tax right off because that's where their TH-cam & Business stuff is done.
Where their home is located isn't in Portland.

They are extremely disciplined with their money if you follow her channel, even now debt free. Even if they didn’t live with her parents after getting married for a few years, they would still accomplish what they have - it would’ve just taken them a little longer.

Impress me when you’re making closer to the median income, and you ACTUALLY live in Portland.
people who make the median income and live in actual portland have a room in someone's house they rent because you cant live in portland on a median income. I live in portland with my 4 young adult and teen kids one of which now helps with rent and our income is just under 100k a year with all money considered and we are pretty poor in terms of how we live compared to what the same amount of money would get us anywhere else. Our rent is 2400 a month alone and that takes the lion's share of income. We dont have any debt really except some hospital copays we owe but we sure are not able to save anything and we are gonna move to a cheaper area as soon as we can.
This just goes to show that finances CAN become a lot simpler once you get married, double the income and mostly the same expenses

I live in Oregon with food allergies and it costs about $900 for food a month! I also try to eat the best I can as well. I would love to see what food you can buy for $300 from the grocery store!
Their take home is $109,044 and they make 124k so they pay about 15k in taxes. That doesn't seem right. I don't know what their local and state taxes are but for just Federal taxes alone they'd have to pay 23k

They made smart choices yes but they also had a lot of help getting started. Everyone does not have parents to give them money, let them live with them or even give them good money advice or show them how to handle money correctly. Not everyone is starting at the same start line as them.

This is not representative of housing in Portland. The couple lives near Tualatin, almost 20 miles outside the city.
Texas isn't all that cheap anymore. Oklahoma is where the real finds are. Only bad part is you have to live in Oklahoma. XD

@@sierrababbidge2394 it looks like they include the 401k and stuff into their monthly savings in the video. Most people don’t count that as money coming in because it’s removed from your income before you get your check and is taken out pretaxes.
I so relate to those first few years of sacrifice in marriage being worth the financial freedom. That intensity for a short period of time means we can be generous with our finances and have peace about our future. It's an immense blessing.

As a millennial that lives in Portland, this couple is definitely the exception, not the rule. Also, as others have said, they don't live in Portland, they live out in Hillsboro 😐 I make a little less than the average at about 30k a year. Literally none of my peers in my friend group make this much money.

Very cool to see a couple that almost exactly matches the same story my wife and I have! We make almost the same, have a similar story with finances, had to pay down 90k in loans, 10k wedding, put less than 20% down on a house (15% 😂), and are investing in all the same places. Good luck!
crazy! my wife and i make the same, exact same age and we have payed off $80k in debt since we got married, we also save $4k a month. we were to Hawaii in April and universal in November. nice job guys!

I love that she had the same car since HS... I’ve had the same car since college (almost 16 years old now!) and I intend on driving until the wheels come off. No point in acquiring a car note if I don’t have to!
1:32 Costco Members. But they should really be Executive members at Costco to get 2% back which offsets annual membership fee! You earn it on all in-warehouse purchases including tires, prescriptions, food, travel, etc.
