Those old trucks are very hard on gas even with the two barrel carburetor I had three or four of them and could not keep gas in them the dodge 318 did not know what fuel economy was
To answer your questions about Mud Dobbers, they build the dirt clods forming those tubes then they get even busier. They lay an egg in the back of them then they're on a quest for certain spiders. They sting the spider but only to parilze them. The egg hatches and the larvae eats the spiders as they grow then bust through a thin exit wall of mud to escape. Loving what your doing now for years. Keep em coming. Truck Driver Ray ✝️ GOD BLESS ALL 🙌
If ever you have to switch to the old style ignition system, do keep in mind it has to be accompanied by a vacuum advance style distributor. As for the transmission fluid, on a mopar, always be sure to check fluid levels whilst in neutral, the pump does not operate in park.
I was excited for this one when I saw the red dodge with that white aluminum camper top. My family had a 1987 short bed with a 225 slant six that we vacationed in through the 90s. White camper with a sliding glass and a weather gasket between truck and camper. Full size mattress in the bed with a custom bunk at the front and a custom wood box dad bolted to the frame for our luggage and coolers. From Indiana, we drove to VA, GA, TN, MI, and many other states and once to Canada. Mom, Dad and 7 kids. Roadside meals, hotels and many sights to see. This will be one of my favorite videos. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Great content as usual!
Helpful tip. I've found it to be most beneficial to use unfolded cardboard to lay on under the vehicle. 1- It helps you to get under and up. 2- It keeps your clothing cleaner. Hope this helps. Truck Driver Ray ✝️
I helped my sister & bro in law put on a rodeo in Quincy, IL June of 85 and the Dodge dealer let us put 2 new 86 pickups out for display that could a been siblings. I drove 1 to and back to Hanibal. 👍
Weirds me out... "parked since about 2008" My brain says, "last week?" Then I realize that was 15 years ago. Time is a weird thing and is unforgiving to all of us and everything we've created.
Same here,I saw a 98 model the other day with a antique tag , my first thought was that isn’t old enough to have that but it is, the 90s seem like just a few years ago to me. The older you get, the faster time goes by.
Nice job fellas! Remember that all Chrysler trucks, Jeeps, since way back(don't know the exact start date) have plastic fuel tanks. Any computer controlled vehicles really need a lot of body grounds also. Someone will love restoring that old truck.
Never thought I'd see any potential in a plain old 80s era pickup, but I can imagine this thing with the patina retained, a mild lowering job, and nice period slotted mag wheels with big and little tires for some hot rod rake. I'd put a 4 barrel and some headers on the motor and maybe finish off with some signwriting on the doors and a Mexican blanket on the bench seat.
Same. Isn't it the kind of truck we'd barely notice years back? And this one they grabbed up for $800! I don't think any of us would pass that by, no matter how much possible marital strife it might cause for some. :P
Love those 1972-1993 Dodge trucks and ram charger underrated compared to Ford and GM love how it still has the ram hood ornament Definitely Ram Tough! Dodge Trucks!
The reason for going thru so much gas is this : On the fuel filter there is a hose that comes off the side and goes to a return line back to the gas tank. So when running off of a external tank it is sending gas back to the main tank instead of the one you're using. Had that problem myself and found out the hard way, you should have noticed you fuel level raising on the gauge, if it works.
Oh my lord a first generation ram !!! My grandparents had one it was a darker red then that one but none the less it was a beautiful truck brings back some fond memories of my grandpa with his.
That was cool. I had bought a 1986 D100 new, and drove it from Chicago to San Diego and back with zero issues. Only mine was a straight 6 with a 4 spd. Had it for 5 yrs, zero problems. Thats for the great memories you brought back for me. May God continue to bless ya'll and yer families
Great video y'all. Love to see more "drive it home" videos! If it was my truck...I'd restore it to original. Redo the interior and paint it in original colors. I'd probably take the camper shell off and drive it like a trudk. Nice Dodge Ram!
Thank You all for a Great video! I have to admit I’m not much of a Mopar guy, but that old horse doesn’t look to bad! It should make someone a Good daily driver.
Once again, Brilliant video. Fascinating watching you guy's bring the old cars back to life. Enjoy being a Father, It's the best feeling in the World. God bless.
@@TurninRust nice video guys 😀 I own a 85 d150 stepside shortbed I put a hei gm module and it runs with Mopar ballast risistor & coil.. and I have my ecu original box for backup still works after 36 years lol
Just pulled a 84 d150 out of a field a couple months ago and didn’t know if y’all knew or not but if this has that 727 trans it will not pump fluid thru it while in park and will burn it up but I love the content and hope to see more mopar content
So you guys are so amazing when your working together like that. It's awesome to see what you guys pull off next lol. God bless you guys in all you do, it's our Lord behind all of it.
In response to your question, what would I do if it were my truck? I would discard the topper sand and paint it, put a nice set of chrome wheels and tires, dual exhaust, new carpet and seat material and completely replace any mechanical defective parts.
That plate you had, long rectangle one....does indeed hold the top of the radiator...has screws along the top portion above the grill and sets across the top of the radiator....kinda how you put it in the video. When you went to the Pickers, I saw a Ramcharger that would have the same setup likely as that truck for donor parts.....nice to see an old Dodge make it back on the road.
I just got back around to watching you show an the rest of my car shows like vice grip garage . My mom past away . Was watching this episode. Your a brave man there’s no was il stick my hands in a car or truck with out knowing what Tip of creatures are in it with out gloves on . Love you show God bless you both .
2 down falls I've ran into when working on an LA engine is timing chain and electrical. They run so long they stretch the chain and/or skip timing. Orrrr the electronics fail between the battery and the ignition/ spark unit. Best net is to delete the lean burn and diagnose from there. If not, there are plenty of videos explaining how to make power, to which you can take points from to make it run like new with out breaking head gaskets. Good job with it yall!
Brought me back to the days of my Power Wagon with a 360. Best fuel mileage I ever got was 8 miles to the Canadian gallon (4.54 litres). A tip from experience: Don't ignore those other frost plugs; you had 2 bad ones but you can be SURE the others will soon let go as well. Love my Mopar's! Great show!
There is a ceramic resistor on the firewall it has a strip of insulation on the back if it is cracked you can crank that thing till midnight and she wont start!
That old truck cleaned up well and it sounds like it runs well too. I'm just seeing this 6 months after you posted it. I'm guessing the fact that it's in Texas where trucks sell quickly, it's already sold to a new home. If I weren't in NJ I'd love to have it. We don't see trucks of that age here that aren't rustbuckets that are so bad that if you slam the door, it'll fall off the truck.
I would go through the whole truck. Make sure everything works fix the seat give it a good shampooing on the carpet, replace the rear bumper and give it a good paint job big super fan of the channel. Thanks.
Man, those old LA engines are hard to kill. I had a 360 LA in my 1984 Ramcharger with a Carter Thermoquad in it with a 918 trans and a NP205 transfer case. That thing would go anywhere and it cruised just fine.
One of the few times I've seen a rescue on a vehicle so close to one I've owned. Had an '87 D150, same engine/trans, at some point somebody had gone really old school and put a points distributor in it, but no resistor so it was burning them up pretty quick. I left the distributor in but put in a Pertronix converter, no issues then. Also had to replace the ignition relay on the inner fender. Otherwise a great truck, comfortable ride.
I would make it look and run like as a new truck as possible. It is a better truck than you can buy today. You didn't say if the air conditioner worked but I saw you had the windows closed that made me think it does. A beautiful truck.
I have an 87 D150 with the 4 barrel 318 and the 727. The po had removed the computer and the air pump and could never get it to run right so he sold it to me. I replaced the original quadrajet with a 1406 Edlebrock. Much metter. Then removed the EGR valve, put a set of 318Magnum exhaust manifolds on with a full dual exhaust . (minus the cats) Still had trouble starting on occasion. Replaced that pesky ballast resister twice, the ignition module and finally replaced the the whole thing with the small cap HEI system. End of problem. Truck runs great and gets about 2 miles per gallon more than the factory says for the 2 barrel 318.
Awesome video I love these old dodge trucks......these trucks are known for the front pump seal in the tranny leaking every one I've bought with the exception of 1 had bad front tranny seals
If I could afford this one It would make A great old farm truck again at our little farm. Love watching you all get these older vehicles running and driving again. Great vid guys.
Great video. I drove an 88 Dakota in high-school, this reminded me of it so much. Brought back the memories. If this were mine, I'd leave it as is and drive it down the road. Thanks for the video!

One of the many things I like about the older trucks and cars are the headlights. To replace one on that truck is likely under $25.00. With the newer stuff the headlights sub burn and if one is broken they are over $100.00 each. There are so many other things that are the same situation on the newer stuff.
