You can see the prototype gameplay of the game that was made by the original team. While it looks smooth and fluent, it wasn't what the director wanted and again didn't quite understand how to get his team to make it big and over the top when this is part of the same team that has done only metal gear games. That's when they handed it off to Platinum because they knew how to create that vision. So the MGR we ended up getting is basically what was originally envisioned but the original team didn't know how to create.
Interestingly, when all the beta versions of the songs were revealed, A Stranger I Remain was the only one to have completely different lyrics! I'd like to consider it the hidden "second verse" of the song.
The coolest thing about MGRR's soundtrack is how each song specifically fits each boss's personality. For example: Mistral's song ties back to her backstory, how she realized at an early age she was a killer and never felt belonging anywhere until the events of the game. Monsoon's theme is pure nihilism and embracing oblivion. Sundowner's theme is an ode to violence, so simple and pure it's almost childish. Senator Armstrong gets two themes, Collective Consciousness representing his facade as a politician and It Has To Be This Way symbolizing his true thoughts. So on and so forth.

Remember just like with Sam's theme when Raiden loses the Murasama in the Armstrong fight it stops using the vocals and purely uses the instrumental until you collect the sword again.

Actually at around 2:20, in that transition phase, what you hear aren't really lyrics but sentences in French (my native language) that relate to Mistral's own journey. She is an Algerian-French soldier. What she says: La chaleur me dérange, mais c'est le grincement du bateau, qui m'a réveillée. Translation: The heat is bothering me, but it is the creaking of the boat that woke me up. Admittedly, she came from boat to France or the United States, and possibly as a stowaway or on a small boat. Aight, that's it for the explanation!
Id actually say the "clunky" gameplay is fixed by MGSV. The only real issue with MGSV is that it was unfinished with Kojima being kicked out of the company. That said this game is clunky in its own ways but its super fun fast and high octane fun. Never forget Jamie Christopherson's first game ost was Toon Town Online
I stand by to this day that MGSV is one of the single best handling moment to moment games I've ever played. Every couple years I go back and always reminded how just fun it is to mess around. If it's story was up to the quality of say... MGS3 would probably be one of my favorite games ever.
MGSV has tons of great mechanics and that's it. It's a mediocre game overall, very boring and drags like hell. You're missing a lot of context without reading notes and listening to tapes, so the narrative flow is completely fucked.
Kojima is no saint though, and he's not an innocent victim. His removal from the company was not a sudden knee-jerk reaction by Konami. Like all "auteur" directors (movie or game) his "vision" comes first even if it means going over budget by hundreds of millions of dollars with very little progress actually being made, which is exactly what happened with MGSV. So Konami cut their losses and just released the game in it's incomplete state and booted Kojima to the curb. Konami are a scummy company don't get me wrong, but in this instance they weren't in the wrong. They could have gone about it with more tact perhaps, but end of the day Kojima was bleeding them dry while failing to deliver a finished product.
The story is very much there, but it's definitely paced differently. Like, the gameplay and energy is absolutely front and center and in the spotlight, but it does use that as a theme for the story and how the world progresses after MGS4. Definitely one of those games - like DMC really - where the story is absolutely rewarding if you want to dig into it, but you don't have to in order to understand what's going on. It's the perfect blend of spectacle and story imo.
There are a couple songs on the list right now but since it's such a recent game, I don't imagine he'll react to it for a while unless it's boosted by a platinum request.
Definitely wanna see your reaction to The Only Thing I Know For Real. Jetstream Sam is too good. Monsoon's theme The Stains Of Time is SUPER good as well! And then of course you can't forget the theme for Rex when you fight it at the beginning: Rules Of Nature.

I actually think this is the single track the game had to butcher by virtue of how Mistral's fight works. The lyrics get much less time to shine than usual; so despite it being one of the best tracks in the OST, you wouldn't really know it because you pretty much just hear the chorus and the end of the song before the boss is dead.
It plays pretty much the same amount as Monsoon gets, if a bit more so since though Monsoon has his smoke bombs, once you've knocked him out of purple after the lyrics kick in he won't really get back into it and that would be the main source of damage downtime, but with Mistral for damage downtime there's still tripods grabbing and she can keep up pressure on you to defend through long range moves, tripod throws, and cartwheels. Ray and Excelsus and Khamsin get theirs in QTEs, Sam and Armstrong get the most musical uptime since it's most of the fight in either case, and Sundowner, hearing his theme is an optional, and if you don't know how to proc his shield state, bothersome, challenge. After which is probably going to be a very thin health pool.
