(For the record, the ONLY Metal Gear game I've played is Revengeance. The resulting fallout saw Metal Gear as a series pretty much die, as without Kojima, the subsequent game (he'd already pretty much finished MGSV before Konami stole his shit and kicked him to the curb), Metal Gear: Survive, absolutely bombed. Because Konami had completely shifted from console games to mobile games because they could shill the microtransactions that much harder on mobile games, they really didn't give a shit, and haven't touched the series since, as it's not in their business interests to make a game that takes time, effort, dedication and love when they can just slap something together and bleed a player-base dry until it inevitably fails. Late-stage capitalism at its best.
@@sergeantassassin3425 Wait so when was MGR2 cancelled? Before or after they made MG: Survive? If MG:Survive was successful, would we have got MGR2? ...they should have fucking told me that, I would have bought 100 copies of MG:Survive just to have more of MGR allowed to be made!
Revengeance is simultaneously the most savage satire of the entire Metal Gear franchise and yet somehow the best sincere presentation of the series' themes.
Thanks for pointing that out! I absolutely love it! Here's something else: when Armstrong says, "Come on!" his eyes glow red like Raiden's when he's in Ripper Mode!
"I have not stopped listening to the music since playing this game god help me" -Shenpai This is actually a hidden feature of the game, musical addiction to pure awesomeness!
Originally, Sam was fighting to avenge his father's death at the hands of a drug cartel (he ran a martial arts dojo before his murder). Using the family blade, the Murasama, Sam cut down his killers, and later went to dispense justice as a vigilante of sorts, being called *Minuano* (the cold wind of Brazil). He later decided to go after Armstrong for sending men to die for reasons unknown to them, but after his fight with the Senator, Sam instead joined him. During his time with World Marshal, Sam had lost sight of his original ideals instead fighting for the sake of fighting, but after watching the dedication Raiden had to saving the brains of the children, he began to question what he was really doing. The reason he had fought Raiden in the Badlands was to rediscover his ideals. His theme song during the fight reflects all of this: A man who's lost sight of his reasons to fight and who has replaced them with how he fights, represented by his blade. The bit with no lyrics (or when you knock away his sword), represents how this final fight makes him feel alive and human again. For a moment, he not only thrives in the heat of battle, but he actually rediscovers his original ideals: to fight for justice and keep soldiers from being sent to fight in wars they don't believe in, seeing these ideals in Raiden. He doesn't need the fight itself as his reason to fight anymore when he has his original ideals in hand. The final verse shows Sam's reflection during his time with World Marshal. He had spent so much time thriving on bloodshed, climbing the ranks and becoming a Wind of Destruction that he had forgotten why he fought at all. This is why he is testing Raiden: if Jack's resolve is great enough to beat Sam, then it will be sufficient enough to defeat Armstrong as well. He was checking to see if Raiden was worthy enough as his successor (Think Bruce Wayne passing the torch of Batman to Dick Greyson (Robin), except the test is killing each other).
@@yahia5476 Rules of Nature reflects the plight Metal Gears face: once regarded as pinnacles of human engineering and the most lethal weapons of war ever conceived, they are now obsolete in a world of cyborgs and nanomachines. Despite how epic the song is, it shows how effortlessly Raiden was able to defeat Ray. Also I know that all of the themes reflect aspects of their respective bosses, it's just that Sam's theme does it the best in my opinion and I think it's a shame we didn't touch on him more in the video.
@@My2Cents.iF7934 pretty much, Metal Gears used to be the final bosses for a reason as well the thing that gave its name to the series, then as it goes on, like here, they were just tutorial enemies and even against armstrong, the easiest of the phases
As a person who has been to brazil, I can confirm that everyone there can double jump, albeit slightly better than the double-jumpers who live in boston.
23:05 It actually makes sense they resort to their batons instead of guns, because with cybernetic enhancements the stick hits WAY harder. Not to mention countless enemies already proved bullets to be less than effective against a super cyborg ninja that just cuts bullets out of the air.
As demonstrated in the gam, gunfire is now just how the police introduce themselves at this point. The cops draw level with Raiden, _shoot for his head,_ *then* shout, "Pull over!"
One really fun detail about Armstrong I always celebrate is how genuinely happy he looks when Raiden seemingly agreees with him. Regardless of that merciless beating Raiden got, Armstrong still hoped to convince him of his perspective on things. And he seemed actually elated to welcome him - until Raiden shoots down that pipe dream, and just for those few moments in which Armstrong has to collect himself again, he looks actually hurt by the betrayal. I've rarely seen a villain with such a wide emotional range in such a small amount of screentime. You can mock the game for its dumb story, but the presentation is godlike!
I think its crucial to why he's able to work so well as an antagonist with so little screen time, by giving him little moments of emotional vulnerability like that it lets you buy that he's being 100% honest with us, he fucking breaks down his own emotional walls to choke slam us an it helps really crystalize the character.
@@hatemongerofthetoxicbrood6561 Ehh, the story is exciting, but it's hardly well-written. There's many inconsistencies and plot holes strewn across, and once you start to notice them, things just don't align anymore.

Well, the only soundtracks I can think of is DMC and Sonic, but I don't know if it falls in the "self-aware edgy" category, since most of their music are practically portraiting their own world reality.

The fact that we never got a sequel to this game is a CRIME.
But, can a masterpiece truly be beat?
(For the record, the ONLY Metal Gear game I've played is Revengeance. Not a diehard MG fanboy by any means, but the way Konami went about this was dirty af.)
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
The reason we didn't get a sequel (which was ALREADY PLANNED, btw) is because it's one of the last MG games to come out before Konami raw-dogged Hideo Kojima without his consent.
@@sergeantassassin3425 for someone who's only played Revengeance, you make a pretty good point. It's a shame what happened.

Music so METAL that they're still making a second game for it
Originally, Sam was fighting to avenge his father's death at the hands of a drug cartel (he ran a martial arts dojo before his murder).
His theme song during the fight reflects all of this:
A man who's lost sight of his reasons to fight and who has replaced them with how he fights, represented by his blade.
I would like this comment but it’s a 69 likes, so, here’s a comment that says like
In fact every single boss theme reflects on the boss (MG RAY not included for obvious reasons)

This game makes you feel like the super cool mf side character you see in every game who just comes in, does some fkn insane stuff and then leaves like a pure chad
To be fair, that was basically Raiden in MGS4
Just like cid in TEIS
Oh God this game. Not only did it feel like a fever dream, the characters kept trying to out-ham each other. Everything from the terrible battle oneliners to the ham-tastic posturing feels like someone crossing off a "how ridiculous can we make this game" bingo card.
I love that they included Raiden's dorky cluelesness regarding the local fashion or how to converse with a robot dog.
And then of corse there is Jetstream Sam who should be the next Metal Gear character to get a solo game, double jump and everything.
I love how in the Sombrero scene even the locals are like wtf???
Riaden is a dork but he's our dork
Sam did get a DLC story...
This _almost_ became a series. Think about that. Kojima looked at this and was like "yes this is a good enough sequel to MGS". I really hate this game lol but I respect people who find it enjoyable
@@merlotpapi4930 shame it didn't honestly. Idve loved more genuinely good hack n slash metal gear wackiness.
I love how Max keeps quietly quoting jimothy and max0rs videos
The final song when battling Armstrong actually has the lyrics showing the view point of both Raiden and Armstrong. They are both realizing that they will fight to the death so what their ideals are would win and shape the future of humanity.
It's also why Armstrong says he is his heir, because he will use his strength for his own ideals and beliefs. Such a masterpiece of a game that is also completely batshit insane to play.

"That's CRINGE Jack and your set up is WEAK (BOOM VINE EFFECT)"
The title doesn't even say "Playing Metal Gear Rising Reveangence for the first time", it uses the word Experience. Because this game is a goddamn journey.
31:55 dear fucking god when i saw this in Maxor’s video i thought the magazine was edited in
37:55
i swear to god, i cried of laughter, i literally watched that part like 10 times in a row in almost hysterical laughter
i fucking loved this video, thank you shen.
*every sound effect at once*
That is so funny
Making the mother of all laughers here justiceiro47 can’t fret over every crying there eyes out and peeing there pants of laughter.
Senator Armstrong, the only man who could fit the transcribed lyrics for both his theme songs on his forehead, evil, and still be respectable.
The worst part about George is that the Japanese casting director was perfect as far as I could see because they ACTUALLY CASTED A PERSON WHO COULD SOUND LIKE A CHILD
I'd love to see her playing the mgs games lol, imagining someone who panics over anything playing a stealth shooter with a jump scare of a sound effect every time she get caught. Perfect lol
oh god, the super loud "BLEEP/BLEARGH" of the NPC's seeing you in MGS1 and 2 are PTSD material
Now we can relive the stream all over again.
I feel ya on the ost though. Absolute earworms
EDIT: OH MY GOD THE SUBTITLE'S SUBTITLES HAVE SUBTITLES WHAT THE FUCK
Yo dawg, I heard ya like subtitles.
I just realized after 9 years, that when Armstrong throws his cigar Raiden slices it apart. 34:36
"They're in New Zealand. Safe" Implies New Zealand is actually safe for human habitation. OPTIMISM!
What are you on about, it's the safest country on the planet? It has no wildlife that could actually threaten a human, plenty of farmable land, the ideal temperature for most people, plenty of sun and rainfall and it has just enough people to from proper infrastructure but not enough people to cause large scale pollution or civil conflict. Most importantly it gets left of maps so often that imperialists never think of invading it.
Now Australia on the other hand...
@@thatguy6482 we don't talk about australia...
@@gjkdshgkjshjkgdfg Yeah............
Way different climate. They were probably skiing in the Southern Alps, or so Raiden thought.
_"Nanomachines, son! They hardened in response to physical trauma."_
There it is, that's the comment I was looking for.
*"Memes, son! They spread in response to mental trauma."*
30:17 fun fact, the lyrics to songs in mgr are based on the enemies current effort level. They only kick in when the enemy is serious.
My favourite thing with Shen is her reaction to ANY German being spoken. At all. It's the most genuinely "WAIT a f@*king second!" thing I've ever heard.
"I'm so sorry, I hope you get better soon" That fucking killed me.
38:58 Played this years ago and never noticed Raiden got imprinted to the metal from Armstrong's punches. 🤣
As a mexican, i was a little confused when suddenly raiden appeared out of nowere going down the sewer right after the handsom mariachi disapeared. Then i realized that Raiden was the Mariachi all this time. Truly a Master of stealth
Now I want to see Shen play Asura's Wrath, those first sequences really reminded me of it.
Asura's Wrath is a game it is amazing to watch, and ASTONISHINGLY mediocre to play
@@xalrath it’s basically a glorified movie with quick time events but I still love it
Started with "This feels like a fever dream!" and ended with "This game is an experience." Feels about right to me.
MGR is less a game and more like a movie that demands you keep up with it.
Now I really want to see Shen play through the other Metal Gear games.
Looking forward to her reacting to the crotch grabs.
What happens when she gets around to MG2 and realises a game 20~ years ago prophesised the future we currently live in. I have to agree with GW, we do need censorship. Only the truth needs to be passed on, not interpretations of it.
did someone noticed that everytime she slashes Monsoon, it rhymes with the music?
27:21
I think you mean that it matches the rhythm, but I take your point.
I swear I’m the creation process of this game, the people making the story were high of their asses on crack and the musicians were just going off in the back while the story producers just laughed their asses off
How all good games are made
Shen is too much a framerate snob to realize almost all those slowdowns were intentional Lmao
She's aware, it's just baffling that so many of the scenes use that kind of slowmo when the devs prove almost immediately after (i.e when Sam cuts Raiden's arm off) that they could've used actual slowmo and maintained a smooth frame rate.
@@sleepythemis Adds to the charm of an old PS3, XBOX 360 game, i played Sonic Unleashed on those and they casually took frame shits but, thats how most 2008-2013 games were
25:04 Now there's a pretty meme....
*E X Q U I S I T E .*
this is random, been thinking of getting this game actually - granted mostly for the final boss, a legend
Do it, the game is relatively cheap and comes with all DLC on steam. Its honestly an experience
There are also ultra wide mods available. 100% worth it.
