Some supportive but honest advice from an “old man” who enjoys you, your family, and your channel greatly: I have absolutely no doubt that you all could finish the bus well, but sometimes it’s best to evaluate in an honest way and cut your losses. With two houses and multiple vehicles already “in process” this particular project doesn’t seem to be worth the time (something precious that one can never get back).
Yes i agree with you
Respectfully, I totally disagree. This couple spends their precious time together, along with their children, no matter what activity they are doing. And the life-lessons they are learning, along with their kids, are invaluable. Their "never give up" approach to life is so refreshing. They get a lemon and make lemonade! I applaud them.
Many would have said that about the mobile home before the rebuild. This is what they do. They rebuild and refit projects that others would dismiss. Meanwhile we get some great videos.
yes, cut your losses. Y'all win some and y'all lose some. Learn from it and then search for another one after you dispose of this rust bucket.
Ditto what you said. it's hard to stay motivated .... put energy and money into more worthy causes.
Shame on the person who sold it to you. They had to know! 😢
I was thinking the same thing.
oh they KNEW, NO way did they not realize this
God gave Man a helper, and Doug, he sure gave you a good one!
Make it a flat bed!
Cut the sides and back off, put on a solid floor, build a bulkhead behind the front seats and you're all set for transporting wood and materials to your job sites!
@@Kirk_Mcgurk excellent suggestion
Looks as if this van may have been in flood waters at some point; allowed to dry out, then sent to an auction.
That’s what I was thinking.
from my extensive insurance background...SPOT ON ...I would bet $$$
You guys are amazing. You can smile and laugh even when dealing with your disaster.
Yes they're.
Doug and Eevee... you can make it GREAT again....
Completely agree with @stanfordwhite . Take it from another old guy who has converted a couple of buses into RV's as well as built and repaired homes for 40 years. There is a saying in land of schoolies, "Once a rusty bus always a rusty bus. There is nothing that can be done to stop it at this point. While you may be able to make it look better it will be for the short term and not worth the effort. Were it mine I would pull the engine and tranny, if they are good, sell them on eBay, and scrap the rest. While money will be lost, one good project could redeem the loss. The one thing you can't redeem is the time spent on it which takes you away from other projects of value. Turn it into a teachable moment and let it go.
Do you think this bus had been in a flood? It seems an inordinate amount of rust and rot. I thought there were laws governing the sale of water damaged vehicles. I love watching your videos. Always interesting!
Wow. That might be a thought. Hopefully the engine is okay.
its probably not a flood vehicle because a lot more stuff would be damaged, engine, electrical system.. its just dripping down the sides from the roof like eevee said.. its just bad design and it leaked over many years.. probably started leaking the day they sold it from the factory. These things are business vehicles and written off and not expected to last more than 10 years.
The top hatch leaks and obviously let in more water than anyone realized since it looked nice superficially.
The seats flip up as it's made to spray down with a hose. If sealants aren't maintained that's what happens with these
The good thing about this situation is you are showing everyone considering buying one of these buses what they are most likely going to encounter.
I'm like you, Doug. I have things all over the place, "in process." I love it. Several books going too. So inspiring. I'm an 85 yr old woman and will NEVER stop. Thanks for being the restoration king. You can work on as many 'old rust buckets' as you want. Personally, I'm thrilled to watch, and would be even happier to do it.
haha, thank you so much.
Well Doug everyone has an idea and here's mine.....Cut the top off, cut the sides out and make a long bed pickup/wood hauler. You'll need to make a back for the cab, but with your skills it's do able. Good luck with what ever you do. We know you'll do it right.
dude i had that same idea.. they can move the back door up behind the front seats and install that diamond plate steel for a bed.. then they can haul things on it.. boxes or something.. something must need to be hauled .. oh wait yeah wood.. where would they haul the wood to though? maybe a lumber mill .. that would work.. they could hire out as a wood transportation company hauling wood to lumber mills.. where would they get the wood though? HomeDepot has wood.. yeah they could haul lumber from home depot to lumber mills ... I bet you no one is doing that.. no competition.. probably a great opportunity in that.
@@zippythechicken My idea was hauling all the "store bought" wood & supplies they get for the house and trailer. As well as hauling the mower, and any other pickup truck uses they would have. Also install a trailer hitch to pull the shop enclosed trailer. Again just a thought.(like Doug needs another project)
You always manage to make a gem out of an old rock, or an old wreck as the case may be. Keep going Doug and Eevee, it's going to be wonderful and sound when it's done.
Doug, I don't think you should be too upset. Every mistake is a learning experience. And at the end of the day, this bus isn't that bad. This is Florida. All this rust doesn't really look like anything you'd see up north. It's more like surface rust, and the frame itself doesn't look structurally damaged. It's a ton of work to get this bus back up to par, but it's doable for you with your skills. Don't let a little trouble get you down.
You guys are adorable! Great sense of humor. You are so self-motivated and very hard working. I admire you so much. Thanks for the video.
If there's one thing I'm certain of, is that it will all come together in the end. Keep up the great work guys. See you on the next one.😊
I totally agree, they get something others would get rid of and make it new again. Just keep on doing you...❤
Gosh! It looks bad now, but look how far you already came! You will shortly have your DREAM VAN and it will be ALL NEW & to YOUR SPECS!
BLESSINGS ALL! Great work once again. You are almost there....
This may be your most dramatic restoration yet. But you guys are great at making old things new again.
oh my goodness.. this just gave me an amazing idea... making things old new again... They could make it into a Tesla Truck.. if they could find some old stainless steel refrigerators and harvest that.. then they could make a giant tesla truck.. that runs off gasoline.. I think people would like that better.
You can do it, we can help, or we can watch.
….or point and laugh….
I would say pray about it before you make any decisions.🙏 We should all remember to do that.
HOORAY! NEW CHALLENGE! GREAT VIDEO
Good work. Both of you.
I feel for you. Seeing the state of this bus I think it’s more work than you bargained for and you probably paid way too much for it but if anyone can fix it, it’s you guys. You’re the most skilled, and hardworking people on TH-cam. I will be praying for your success. 😊😊😊
The tiny white bugs are Springtails. They eat organic matter such as decaying wood, leaves, dead things and so on. Often people find them in their plants and unless you provide some dead leaves or wood for them to eat they can kill off the roots of the plants.
You are in the hurricane , flood water syate. Looks like that van was right in the middle of one.....or both! Might be wise to 9ull it to the back of the lot and let it set until you dont have any other projects going. Then it will be more fun to tackle.....😊
Could be the perfect project for the kiddo's to tackle.
The bus ended up in the best hands possible. Maybe no one else would have been able to fix it properly or decide it would be a good idea to tear it apart. I’m sure you will make it nice and useable.
OMG!!! That's rough but I have all the faith in you to restore it!
I really love how you skip around to different projects. It keeps my mind active and it's so interesting. Always loving your channel and you guys. Keep on keeping on. Can't wait to the next one.😊
Oh my goodness, the " I was just hoping you would pick it up" 😂😂 that is so us. I do most of the clean up on our projects, so this just cracked me up.
It's team work; no one job is less important than the other. A good, knowledgeable "cleanup" and extra hand or two makes the work of the other far more efficient, especially when one is simply physically stronger than the other. When installing a series of screws it's so much faster being handed one screw at a time in the right way than stopping, looking, finding a screw, situating it, and then installing it.
You need a lot of courage and determination to deal with something like this . I think that the end of this terrible things are going to be glorious. It going to be an incredible journey!
You guys will make into something way better. 👍
Looking at the bright side, that rotten floor made for an easy removal! 😄
That is true!
Looks like you have a plan for fixing the bus. Hopefully you keep the wall panels intact to use as templates for new walls. Maybe you can just up the fiberglass roof one section at a time and wire wheel the rust off before treating and sealing the metal. With the skills and determination you have shown on your other project I am sure you will get that bus back to new.
i was thinking if they can get all the screws out of the roof... then they could build a bunch of simple tripods out of 2x4s and support the roof up a foot and get in there and do the things. Hope he has a mig welder that would be useful if some of the metal needs replacing.
I strive to have your calmness. I would be hysterically laughing with nervousness and distress at the sight of so much rust lol
Looks to me like a combination of leaks and constant condensation buildup. Metal sweats heavily, so when you combine un-insulated metal with the drastic interior/exterior temperature differences, you get a ton of condensation. Add in the particle board subfloor which holds water, and acts as a sponge, you end up with even more moisture.
I'm confident in your abilities and I know you'll do something great with this bus. It's definitely salvageable, so please keep going with it! Yes, it's a LOT more work than you had originally planned, but it's also exciting because you get to challenge yourselves more. 😊 Hugs fam 🥰💞
I grew bunches of sunflowers for the chickens, i know you will have that bus looking good in no time 🎉
So rewarding to bring what some “call not worth it”, to life again!
wow guys that's a lot of work, if anyone can do it ,its you two, but sheesh looks like scrub back to the bones if there's any left. a good plan is needed . big hugs for encouragement x
Thank you 👍
😳 I would definitely disect it, every inch and see what you got, needs replacing. It will be better when you are done. Thanks for sharing Doug and Eevee 🤗❤️ much love! You will persevere!
I know you can fix the bus, I have complete faith in your creativity and innovation. Keep going. 👏
You’ve come so far. Assess your time and money. I know you can do just about anything you put your mind too. Do you really want to do this? We enjoy going on your projects with you no matter what they are. Keep up the good work and taking us with you!
Doug you have the knowledge, create your own vision
You two (well the whole family) will make that bus look amazing! You seem to have a knack for finding the diamond in the rough. It doesn't look like much now but boy I can't wait to see the final result.
Good video. I am here for the ride. I support you and your decisions. I have made a couple of costly mistakes as well. Pull up the boot straps and carry on.
Wow you are determined. I would have given up but I know will fix it!
So glad you got to the basics with the bus. You can be do proud of restoring so many things. Fix it up for Belle. She's going to need a place when she goes to college. Wish I were your kid. Great work!
You will make it right
I am so sorry that you got such mess! I know you were so excited with your new purchase 😢. This will be a huge undertaking! Good luck.
Thank you
You should make it a flat bed truck for hauling only. Just build the cab back with jump seats for the kiddos.
I was thinking the same thing...Be great for hauling stuff.
Outch😢 great challenge just for you guys 💪 😊
It will take a lot of work but you and the family I’m sure will make it better than it’s ever been before 😊
I am really enjoying this new channel. When you do get done with this bus, it will be more specific to your needs. Can't wait to see Eevee's touch to the interior!
There isn’t any problem or issue that the two of you cannot overcome or fix. When you repair and remodel that bus it’ll be better than new. Just like everything else you take on. You two are super heroes!!
When you popped all those windows out I was reminded of the melon buses we have around here. (Great melon growing country in SW Indiana). Old school buses are turned into haulers to get the melons from the field to the facility. Windows removed for easy loading and unloading, and many times the bottom frames of the windows are covered with something to act as bumpers. Some are painted bright colors in graffiti style.
Well on a positive note the bus is in the right hands!
This be a good place to add to your shed
If anyone can fix the bus , it’s you guys !!
I love it, "Doug did a thing" that should be the motto of DIYDIFFERENT.
Doug and Eve you’ll get it done eventually!🥰🇨🇦
As heart wrenching as this must feel right now, just look ahead to the time when this project is completed. I'm sure you've already got a million and one ideas to improve it. You probably did before you ever gutted it. 😊 Don't sweat it. Everyone knows that you guys are more than qualified to make it better than it was when it first rolled off the assembly line, --and you will. Then you'll be happy that you had the opportunity, just like with all your other projects, to make it your own.
So keep the calm, positive demeanor you guys always have, and have fun!
Bye kids 👋 Have fun!
Thank you! We'll see what we can do!
@@livingdiyfferent you're very welcome!
Get a needle scaler to clean the metal. I wouldn't worry too much about how bad it is. You will have a little more work preparing and painting, but after that it will be fine.
After watching you guys for years i know you can sort this bus and you'll make it look easy lol Love you guys ❤
Thank you!
When y’all were talking about the tiny white bug and what it might be I was thinking “Ask Belle!!” 🙂
At least the galvanized metal under the wood floor looks pretty good. The stairs definitely need work though. If you want to protect the metal, I found Eastwood Rust Encapsulator Platinum works really well. I did my Bilco doors with it and it came out nice. While you can even paint it over rust, I used a wire brush on an angle grinder to remove the rust first. Good luck with the project!
Chris
Oh my. We have seen you take other thing to greatness.
There is no doubt in my mind that you have the skills to make this bus what you want it to be. It's sure going to be a lot of work and you know best if or when to call it quits. Whatever you decide, we are along for the ride. 😊
We appreciate your support!
Doug and Eevee I have no doubt you will solve the problem and make it all work❤️🇨🇦
On man! That was like opening a can of worms!
Hi Doug and Eevee, I have seen some folks put down a tarp and throw their lawn cuttings or debris onto the tarp, that way it is easier to drag to a new location without getting nails and whatnot in their yard. Just thought this might be a useful tip. ❤️
Hi Doug, Eevee and kids,
Yep,,, laugh it off and keep moving forward!
Y’all always figure things out that no one else
can 😜 I have faith in ya!! To do what you think
is best! God is Good!
Loves n hugs sweet friends of mine!❤
Good morning 🙏 🌄 from keavy Kentucky I hope you and your family 👪 have good day and I hope you and your family doing a good job 👏 on TH-cam video and you and your sweet family 👪
Well darn it silly rusted bus. Good thing you are not afraid of work. Keep. Doing. You!! 🌵🌻🎶🚌🔨
This is something that really amazes me. You have no wall of impossibility. When lives gives you lemons, you make lemonade, then plant the seeds to make more trees and build a lemonade stand. :)
know what I like making? Lemon Popsicles ... whenever i make lemonade or koolade i make sure to fill up some popsicle molds then i just add more water and you can't tell when you're drinking the lemonade but you have bonus popsicles 🍧🍋🐔
Hey brother at least the sheet metal floor looks good! Could be worse! Y’all will get it done and just enjoy the process and time spent together! Love y’all!
I know ye can turn this camper around and have the best camper ever❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊
Wow what a mess. I feel so bad for you , a lot of hard work ahead. I’m sorry you got a lemon. Wish only the best outcome on this one . God Bless your beautiful family.
Wow, that’s going to be a big project, but I totally know Doug and Ashley ❤💙 will make it beautiful
You have to be ready to accept the good and the bad. And I am sure you guys can take this rare bad purchase and turn it into a winner! Whatever happens I’m here for it. Keep on keeping on!
I'm staying optimistic!
Good news is I did not see anything rotted through yes lots of wire wheel, stop rust treatment and a good paint protectant but I think you will be ok. I guess the positive is since you got it down to basically a bare frame now, you can get wild and make it what ever you want on the rebuild.
I really appreciate your videos, they have helped me to do so many things...you have no idea. My encouragement for you is that you had no idea that bus was full of rust so it's not a bad choice. Knowing how difficult this bus is will only make it's transformation that much better. Just like the mobile home. Ask yourselves why you got it and if you have to abandon ship because you can't fulfill that purpose than cool. Or maybe you just don't want to work with rust. But it's not a bad decision. Yall could make that bus new again as usual. God bless you on the way!
I love how you attack the thing with reckless abandon. Also that might actually have been termite larvae.👍
We all make mistakes in our life, few of us have the skills to turn them into an asset. If you chose to do the work it will be what you wanted. I have all faith in your skills.
It may have been a mistake but I believe you and Evie will bring back to life and be beautiful. Like your family is beautiful. Love watching you guys
nothing is a mistake if you keep denying it enough
FYI... I'm not getting notifications and have checked to make sure I have it selected and I do. I wonder how many others are missing your videos and don't realize it.
i dont think there is any job to big that you guys cant handle. just the energy level for all your projects is amazing tho
WOW! For my skill level, I will be sure to avoid any vehicle that has any leaking issues in the future! Yeah, considering the condition, you probably paid too much for it. I hope the engine at least is decent! That might make it worth the trouble. If nothing else, you are gaining experience.
Wow!! What a shame. Whoever sold you that bus should be ashamed of themselves! Personally I don’t know how they sleep at night. But there will come a time when you will be done on your other projects & then you can work on it. I have no doubt you can fix it like you want it to be. Maybe not like when it was new but I think it will be better than new & last you all for years. Don’t be disheartened. Everything will be ok. Until next time. ❤❤❤❤
When I feel this way I just take a break and come back to it later!
Oh boy. It is a question of how much money you will spend and is it going to be a fun project. I had a van I loved but it kept putting me in the hole. I wonder the gas mileage? I will keep watching for updates.
Man...I sure hope you got a rip-roarin great deal on this bus!
It was the most expensive vehicle we have ever bought.
Wow that’s a tough decision. Looking at the side framing I’m not sure if the rotting is salvageable. For sure the rusted sheet metal around the stairs will need to be replaced which will require welding new pieces in. That alone is daunting. It’s almost like that van was submerged at one time. I can’t believe how poorly it was designed. Will be watching to see what solution you come up with.
It may take a while, but I’ll wait. I want to see the transformation Eevie and Doug do to this project. I know they will do it! ❤
I love your show. I stumbled across it by accident now I love watching you two. You and Eevee are so very talented.
Thanks, we're glad you are enjoying it!
I have faith that when the bus is finished it will look brand new. 😅
I think in this situation, if it’s not salvageable to drive, then you should sell the engine and turn it into an outside shed or an open trailer. Just a thought because you guys are so creative and not afraid to tackle projects.
I think it’s great. It’s not just gonna go to a dump.
Oh man! Thanks for sharing.
Doug I been seeing on Facebook marketplace 4x8 sheets of PVC board I don't know if it is feasible option but I thought I would mention it. Good luck that bus looks like its going to be a lot of work I am looking forward to this project 😀
You should buy a roll of paper used to make vinyl flooring paderns. Just lay it down. Cut it out then place it on your OSB. 👍
