Doug and eevee, I see the potential in this. Take your time do it right like you always do. Start with the hatch. Maybe look into the same roofing membrane as camper roofs after you get that hatch fixed. Might be worth a shot

Doug I have Faith in you. I know you can do this. Im trying to think of suggestions for you on the rust. Mmmmmm I do watch a lot of car TH-camrs. Each one does there own thing when fixing up cars. His is mostly getting old cars running. Mmmm. There's also "Budget Builds". mostly when I watch any of those channels mostly sleeperdude. I see them use a wheel grinder and grind the rust off. Another one uses the cleaner "clr". Sleeperdude uses a grinder grinds a lot of the rust off with a wheel grinder and then to prevent further rust. Primes it with a Rust-Oleum primer. The Soft spot in the floor can be removed and replaced with a wood designed for movement. I also watch lots of schoolie builds. You can buy a replacement hatch if you choose that route in case the bus falls over on its side. I'm all for helping my channels I watch. You never know what you find. Sleeperdude is family friendly. And quite funny to watch. They are big on restoring old cars to get them back on the road. He's also collecting old cars. His farm is a parking lot.

If you're lucky it has the 1000 code Allison transmission. >>;=) It might be worth getting somebody to weld in a panel on the roof or otherwise build something up there that completely covers the hatch, so that it's not a leak point. Only other suggestion would be to get a gasket ordered/made for it or go crazy with some type of good-quality sealant. Thankfully the rust all seems surface, but you have to find all the places the water is actually getting in to get it fully taken care of. As a vehicle/drivetrain, you have a good bus, if you can get past the other issues. Whoever designed it needs to be flogged, though. >>:=p
