I have used several Nitecore products including lanterns that can show the battery voltage. Great review. It's an interesting flashlight with some really cool features. There's an opportunity on the site to save some money...however...the price tag is a bit heavy for me personally. Thanks so much for another product review/pre-sale video.
Que the music - :-) Love your channel, love your style … and your outfits. Your wardrobe manager does great job. I like your black long sleve Steve Jobs like shirts. ) Look forward to the behind the scene video soon. Great job !
It's fairly good, and Nitecore are always well-made, but $300?! have they seen the competition?! Today I could buy a 16000 lumen Astrolux EC06 for £60, and that's a proper turbo mode, not just momentary, and 566m of throw. IMO a much better torch all round, I really don't know who spends that much on a light when they will be out of date next year anyway. Fixed battery packs are a deal-breaker to me, too. Great review though Jon, thanks!
Any light of this size with similar output will only be able to sustain that for a few seconds. Nitecore is one of the best when it comes to efficiency and heat dissapation and they made it a momentary mode because they know it won't be sustainable at that size. Nitecore is always pricey tho, I'll give you that
Yeh in australia its $500 and you can get a acebeam x50 for that price most these smaller lights get very hot even at 10k and dont last long at all in turbo. your better off getting a bigger light if your going to spend $500. it looks like they copied the Fenix 35r also.
Nice video. I have the TM10K and I really like the buttons and display on the side. To look into the light, an ND filter for camera lenses works wonderfully. I have an ND 3.6 with which you can look wonderfully into a single LED with 4k lumens or into a TM10K with 10k lumens.
I got out of the flashlight arms-race years ago. I've got a collection of fancy flashlights from that time, but "oh look this new one's even brighter" just isn't compelling to me anymore. I use a HDS Rotary with a clip I installed myself, and a Tain Ottavino as a backup rattling around in my pocket with other small tools. Before that I used a Jetbeam TC-R2, but sadly it got lost a few years ago.
I have several Maglites that I bought LED bulbs for and they meet most of my lighting needs. I bought the LEDs from TTS - The Torch Site and believe them to be good value. For work I use a Defender Lumos that I use a rechargeable battery in or something similar I bought from TTS. I also have an Olight S2R Baton2 but I am wary of losing it lol.
These lights are like a loudness button on an amplifier or like a dragster: lots of power - for a short time. Lights this size with outputs of this magnitude will get hot very, very quickly and so they will mostly be used on more moderate power levels. Unless you use them to impress your neighbours of course, then the "crazy amount of light for a short time" will come in handy.
For me it really seems to be more of a pure „self defense“ weapon. Blinding a whole crowd of people in one burst could have its use for some. Then overheating and short duration are not an issue 🤔
People love to debate the merits of flashlights for self-defense, but in all honestly all you'll do is make your attacker angry. You can't keep shining it in their face while you're running away, because you have to look where you're going, so you'll have to turn it off and their vision will start recovering. If they're angry enough they'll beat the crap out of you for it.
Looks like a good option if you need an torch to help you get home with extended range, with a good burst of power if you need to light up an area or someone! Like it and good review thanks.
Only just found your channel. So interesting. Thanks. Although I do think you will be costing me a fortune in flashlight purchases in the near future. 🤣 Keep up the good work.
I have an immalent ms06, and I wish it had that lockout button. I can live without a belt clip, but turning that thing on in a backpack doesn't just mean a dead battery, it probably means a fire.
It's crazy where LED and battery technology has come to these days. I have a similarly ridiculous flashlight from aliexpress, bought it for thirty something dollars without batteries. That you can keep on however long you want because it has giant cooling grilles. Not as compact as this one, but I love it, I love flashlights. By today's standards my first flashlight back when I was a little boy, was a joke. You know, one of those little 6V incadescent bulbs, but I loved that one too.
I like the lamp very much. The big point of criticism is the retaining clip. As with the TM10K, the attachment is poor. The small screws are too weak. After just 10 fastenings to the pants, the retaining clip slides to the left and right. It doesn't matter how tight you tighten the screws. The retaining clip should be in a recess in the upper area so that it does not loosen to the left and right. Nitecore definitely needs to revise this in the future!
A great, comprehensive review but it didn't leave me wanting to part with over $400 Australian. With it's serious limitations on throw and run time I can honestly say I sooner be carrying my Fenix PD32. Nice try Nitecore, no cigar.
I purchased the NEBO 12K, and, I'm greatly satisfied with it. I was seriously considering looking into this one, until Jon mentioned that run-time issue, when it's on TURBO. I really like the idea of such power in a hand-held, but, apparently that might be a bit too much power for overheating NOT to be a problem. I work security, and, when I need to see what's going on, there's nothing like that bring-the-daylight, to the entire area, w/o having to move your beam around, searching for whatever. Just the other night, I noticed a vehicle cruising slowly through the parking lot of the condos I patrol, with his lights off. He did exit the lot, made a right, but, only went a couple of feet, behind a brick wall, then stopped. On foot, I followed him, light in hand, but, not illuminated...didn't want to give prior warning that I was coming. Sure enough, as I turned, walked around the wall, we almost ran head-on into each other. I flipped on the NEBO (I leave it on HIGH), in his face, and, he literally jumped, then turned & ran back to his car, jumped in the drivers' seat, and scratched off, swerving up the hill, with his lights off, but, I could see his license plate easily. I'm almost certain that he was temporarily blinded, because, I'd already made the mistake, with a NEBO 6K, of accidentally turning it on, while pointed in my face.
PD32 is an entirely DIFFERENT category of flashlight. That little PD32 flashlight can’t even maintain 1400 lumen without stepping down after it heats up. And that’s its turbo mode max brightness. There are SEVERAL Nitecore flashlights that beat that in the same category, such as the P10iX. You can’t compare this huge light in this video to your unit.
The only thing I don’t like about these aluminum flashlight cases with titanium hook is that if you drop it in the water deeper than you can dive, there’s no chance you can get it with a magnet
That flashlights design reminds me of the oldschool Airam design flashlight that used 4,5volt batteries (the flat ones) i remember them for their crap light output hahaha
Hi Jon, Nice review, thanks! Might I ask you the name of the first song you use in this clip? Really nice tune but Shazam couldn't point me to it.... Thanks in advance!
I, like you, love flashlights. I'd like to have one just for fun, but I don't know about $300? I've got a flat, little Surefire that I like to carry now. 1200 lumens, so it's pretty bright for the size.
Hey Jon, I enjoy your content. I think it would be interesting to see a video comparing keychain torches/flashlights. Also, would you be willing to do a video on your favorite EDC wrist watch? Thanks
Thanks for the review. I'm surprised that this torch sounded good to start with but by the end of your review I was rather disappointed in it. My needs would be in a search and rescue capacity and as a torch claiming to be a search tool it was very lacking on the throw and overall burn time for the higher output was pretty short. Very glad I watched your review.
@@JonGadget it could be good searching in forests with its wide beam but potentially the 20k will bounce back of the trees and foliage and ruin any hope of night vision. Its a shame as could have potential with that power but would need to be in a better configuration for me.
The Fenix LR35R has a similar form factor. It only has half the output on turbo (10,000 lumens) but it is rated at 500 yards. It is truly impressive. In my opinion, these super high intensity flashlights should be designed for more throw. Yes, they should be able to light up everything well at close range. But there's a practical limit to how much intensity of light you need right in front of you.
I have the larger Imalent R90TS and it is just perfect in my view for Search and Rescue, with a constant 10,000 lumens (very powerful and my main use) and its Turbo 35,000 lumens on Turbo. I use it for night walks on hills in Peak District (just done a video on Stanage Edge using it) videos do not do it justice)). and in Sherwood Forest. The R90TS is one of the worlds most powerful hand held (it is large don't get me wrong, I use shoulder strap and carry it for hours) throwers on the market with a 5 year guarantee and not cheap. For search and rescue, most def I would use. Note: I am 5'10' and quite a strong chap, used to carrying weight.
As for the battery indicator, I would think that 3.8v would indicate just over 50% charge....I have a couple lights with this feature and it works just fine for me in terms of charge level and runtime indicators....
@@JonGadget some flashlights from nealsgadgets that I have use this feature, it's never been a problem for me. I prefer the digital readout, but your channel is about minimalist edc preparedness and this is the price for performance in a compact package. Thanks for the videos you put out!
Hey Jon, I wonder why the 1900 lumens on that TM20K lasts for only 1 hour and 45 minutes while it has 9600mah battery. On the Nitecore TM9K TAC, it even lasts for 3 hours on 2000 lumens and it has only 5000mah battery!!!
@@JonGadget Heat step down for TM9K 4H30 runtime for 460 lumens mode on TM9K On Nitecore specs, for runtime it's calculate with thermal stepdown so its 2 hour with probably 5 minute at 2000 lumens and progressive decrease to 460 lumens for 2h total. In fact TM20K can clearly sustain 1900 lumens for 1H30-2H and its a really good point Enhanced by single spot led beam is more equilibrate and usefull for 0-80 meter 😀 You can see on TM20K spec 4h runtime on 1050 lumens mode 4h on 460 lumens on TM9K On cell compare two cells, on this case it's normal. Spec on box, for all brand or usefull but we need an interpretation, you need compare the power to the runtime for estimate the sustainable outpout. If TM9K can sustain 2000 lumens for 2 hours the 460 mode seem be 4x more long (arounde 8h) but it's only 4 hours, 4h with around 500 lumens output is realistic for 5000 Mah cell and you can estimate sustain output capability of TM9K between 2000- 460 lumens. for TM20K 1900 lumens for 2H is realistic twice by 2 1050 lumens for 4H is realistic too with 10.000 Mah cell , so I can tell you 1900 is sustainable mode with low termal decrease 😛 TM9K can sustain around 800 lumens, spec will be correlate with physic law A "small" light single cell 21700 format chuncky head can sustain around 400 too 1000 lumens depending his thermal host capability. So with specs and experience 800 lumens for TM9K is near reality. For TM20K 4x18650/3x21700 head format can sustain 1000-3000 lumens depending thermal host. With this thermal design for TM20K it's not unrealistic she can sustain 1900 lumens. LED/drivers efficiency has low impact in this case
@@besthifisystem6511 Yeah Cell have various capacity. 18650 have (around) 1300 to 3600 Mah 21700 have 3000 to 5000 Mah capacity for example with Samsung 21700 cell Samsung INR21700-30T 3000mAh - 35A Samsung INR21700-50E 4900mAh - 9.8A Samsung INR21700-40T 4000mAh - 35A 35A/9.8A/35A is the "power" capability for cell 30t and 40t can supply more "power" compare to 50E but 50E have more Mah On li-ion cell, li-ion is a global chemistery of cell but inside Li-ion family you have various chemisterie who provide more or less power, more or less capacity, more or less life cycle and more or less price :D. On reality it's more complexe some celle drop quick power output under 3.9v and some cell with "less" power have a constant power output Samsung 40t can provide 35A between 4.2 to 3.9V under 3.9 the power decrease 30>15>5 quickly Samsung 50E provide 9.8 A at 4.2 and also near 3.5 It's for example So in fact Nitecore choose simply a different cell for TM20K compare to TM9K They have probably try and decided a different cell with little low capacity is better for this light. For the real reason only Nitecore can be tell why the choose that, we need wait people dissassemble TM20K for see what cell is inside. I've don't check a lot but for TM9K some people claim it's Samsung 48G inside. it's 4800 Mah 35A They have potentially use same inside TM20K but with the real Mah :D so 2x 4800=9600 Mah is good😝. It's a little lie, classic and not very important for me. Mah capacity is only indicative on built-in cell only for who know on TM9K you have a not under 4500 Mah and on TM20K a note under 9000 Mah. Cells have litte variation capcity for 4000 Mah some cell have 3850 Mah, some have 4100 Mah capacity. For me 400 Mah variation is not important for +9000 Mah total ;)
@@LampAsodium so they're just lying about in the TM9K TAC that it in reality it's only 4,800mah then they just round it off to 5000mah so it'll look that it has a big capacity?🤣
It’s an impressive light but needs a bit of an overhaul. It doesn’t fit well in one’s hand, it’s awkward to use, the buttons are not user friendly, 10 seconds +/- at 20k is pretty useless and the internal battery is a deal breaker. That’s my review, but of course I paid $300 for the light. It wasn’t sent to me gratis for a fluffy review.
If you want to see/film leds when in different modes try getting used cheap ND filters from 2nd hand camera shops.... Then use blue tak to fit 3 or 4 ND filters together... Then a bit more blue tak to fit the ND's to the filter thread of your camera lens... Then you should be able to point a mega flash light into your camera and see what LEDs do what. If you want a close up shot probably not a good idea to put the mega flash light close to your camera lens but use the camera zoom or zoom in post production. The NDs don't need to be same size as your camera lens.....so ones that are slightly bigger. 👍🏼

@@JonGadget it could be good searching in forests with its wide beam but potentially the 20k will bounce back of the trees and foliage and ruin any hope of night vision. Its a shame as could have potential with that power but would need to be in a better configuration for me.
Myck Beddall I was going to say exactly the same thing!
Damn, that's some real brightness...😮
I would like a review that demonstrates the untility and a lot less dialog.
But can you carry it on airport/airplane?
Photontastic!
BEAUTIFUL
What a beast, I need this now! Still won’t be enough to replace my trusty Rovy von A8 though! Would the A8 be able to deter an attacker do you reckon?
I agree the A8 is more practical! Depends where you stick it!
Form-wise this evolves Nitecore's old P36, a very good flashlight for its time.
Wow. can't say I need one. But I want one.🔦😵
How do you confirm the manufacturers output claims? Do you use a light box? Most lumen claims are being proven false lately.
I research those that have tested with access to an integrating sphere
That settles it! I’m buying one right now! Lol
Can it be used for 2-3 hours without burning down the village? Otherwise it's only good underwater diving.
How long will it last on the brightest mode? I often ride in pitch dark conditions in the winter.
As for the battery indicator, I would think that 3.8v would indicate just over 50% charge....I have a couple lights with this feature and it works just fine for me in terms of charge level and runtime indicators....
to keep checking this takes a lot of time and you need to stop to do it
@@JonGadget some flashlights from nealsgadgets that I have use this feature, it's never been a problem for me. I prefer the digital readout, but your channel is about minimalist edc preparedness and this is the price for performance in a compact package. Thanks for the videos you put out!
Always such thoroughly detailed reviews. 1st time I’ve ever wanted a $300. 🔦
😊
I got the DX80. It is 13000 luminous max! Much bigger than yours?
13 hours on Ultra-Low is pretty cool, but did you also mention how long it lasts on maximum 20k mode? Is that like an hour or less?
Wow, I hope I can have like that here in Philippines sir. I am only poor sir. We need that light so much.
Bhot zabardast light ha👌
What about the price. Did I miss that in the video.
Great review. Body design is similar to some Fenix lights, such as the LR35R.
Hey Jon, I wonder why the 1900 lumens on that TM20K lasts for only 1 hour and 45 minutes while it has 9600mah battery. On the Nitecore TM9K TAC, it even lasts for 3 hours on 2000 lumens and it has only 5000mah battery!!!
good question - assuming run times for both are accurate I expect 18 LED's are less efficient than 9?
@@JonGadget
Heat step down for TM9K
4H30 runtime for 460 lumens mode on TM9K
On Nitecore specs, for runtime it's calculate with thermal stepdown so its 2 hour with probably 5 minute at 2000 lumens and progressive decrease to 460 lumens for 2h total.
In fact TM20K can clearly sustain 1900 lumens for 1H30-2H and its a really good point
Enhanced by single spot led beam is more equilibrate and usefull for 0-80 meter 😀
You can see on TM20K spec 4h runtime on 1050 lumens mode
4h on 460 lumens on TM9K
On cell compare two cells, on this case it's normal.
Spec on box, for all brand or usefull but we need an interpretation, you need compare the power to the runtime for estimate the sustainable outpout.
If TM9K can sustain 2000 lumens for 2 hours the 460 mode seem be 4x more long (arounde 8h) but it's only 4 hours, 4h with around 500 lumens output is realistic for 5000 Mah cell and you can estimate sustain output capability of TM9K between 2000- 460 lumens.
for TM20K
1900 lumens for 2H is realistic twice by 2 1050 lumens for 4H is realistic too with 10.000 Mah cell , so I can tell you 1900 is sustainable mode with low termal decrease 😛
TM9K can sustain around 800 lumens, spec will be correlate with physic law
A "small" light single cell 21700 format chuncky head can sustain around 400 too 1000 lumens depending his thermal host capability.
So with specs and experience 800 lumens for TM9K is near reality.
For TM20K
4x18650/3x21700 head format can sustain 1000-3000 lumens depending thermal host.
With this thermal design for TM20K it's not unrealistic she can sustain 1900 lumens.
LED/drivers efficiency has low impact in this case
@@LampAsodium nice explanation! Can you also please explain why it is stated on the specs of TM20K that instead of 10,000mah, it is only 9,600mah?
@@besthifisystem6511
Yeah
Cell have various capacity.
18650 have (around) 1300 to 3600 Mah
21700 have 3000 to 5000 Mah capacity
for example with Samsung 21700 cell
Samsung INR21700-30T 3000mAh - 35A
Samsung INR21700-50E 4900mAh - 9.8A
Samsung INR21700-40T 4000mAh - 35A
35A/9.8A/35A is the "power" capability for cell 30t and 40t can supply more "power" compare to 50E but 50E have more Mah
On li-ion cell, li-ion is a global chemistery of cell but inside Li-ion family you have various chemisterie who provide more or less power, more or less capacity, more or less life cycle and more or less price :D.
On reality it's more complexe some celle drop quick power output under 3.9v and some cell with "less" power have a constant power output
Samsung 40t can provide 35A between 4.2 to 3.9V under 3.9 the power decrease 30>15>5 quickly
Samsung 50E provide 9.8 A at 4.2 and also near 3.5
It's for example
So in fact Nitecore choose simply a different cell for TM20K compare to TM9K
They have probably try and decided a different cell with little low capacity is better for this light.
For the real reason only Nitecore can be tell why the choose that, we need wait people dissassemble TM20K for see what cell is inside.
I've don't check a lot but for TM9K some people claim it's Samsung 48G inside.
it's 4800 Mah 35A
They have potentially use same inside TM20K but with the real Mah :D so 2x 4800=9600 Mah is good😝.
I want one!
hey sorry, what about overheating?? is that a problem with this one?
that is so awesome
What is the track at 15:17? I need music like this in my life!
Vivacity by Phello. That's what Shazam says.
plz tell me the method of purchase sir
Gotta drain batteries pretty fast?
It’s an impressive light but needs a bit of an overhaul. It doesn’t fit well in one’s hand, it’s awkward to use, the buttons are not user friendly, 10 seconds +/- at 20k is pretty useless and the internal battery is a deal breaker.
That’s my review, but of course I paid $300 for the light. It wasn’t sent to me gratis for a fluffy review.
Now that's a flashlight
If you want to see/film leds when in different modes try getting used cheap ND filters from 2nd hand camera shops.... Then use blue tak to fit 3 or 4 ND filters together... Then a bit more blue tak to fit the ND's to the filter thread of your camera lens... Then you should be able to point a mega flash light into your camera and see what LEDs do what. If you want a close up shot probably not a good idea to put the mega flash light close to your camera lens but use the camera zoom or zoom in post production. The NDs don't need to be same size as your camera lens.....so ones that are slightly bigger. 👍🏼
