Adam Savage's Favorite High-Power LED Flashlight!

  • For today's Show and Tell, Adam brings out an incredible LED flashlight that was gifted to him years ago by some friends at Google. This ridiculous flashlight combines four high power LEDs with custom reflectors for a combined 3000 lumens of brightness that can easily light up an entire room. And Adam's favorite part about it may be its development codename. Now you know why Adam had to build a lithium-ion battery gang charger!

Hi. This is Wayne Johnson, owner of Elektro Lumens. Today I received a flurry of emails of people requesting to buy this flashlight from me. First I want to say I have discontinued designing and building flashlights, altogether. So, if you happen to own one of these rare flashlights, hang on to it, maybe even hide it. I have had a number of people contact me, telling me it was stolen out of their vehicle, and they wanted to purchase another. I had to tell them I no longer make it, it is unavailable for purchase.
So my reply here is not so long, I am not going to go into the long story of this flashlight. Possibly some of the details I cannot reveal. But, Google contacted me about this flashlight I was building and selling at the time. They wanted to give one to all their employees as a gift. They helped me improve it, we spent much time improving the design, bringing the dimensions to be exact and precise. We co-produced the flashlight, and they were given to, according to all Google employees worldwide. I probably should not say the exact number, but it was thousands. I personally had a real blast doing this project. I got to go down to Google in Mountain View with my family, spend the day there, eat at some of the free restaurants at the Google facilities (more like a small city), see so much of their facility, absolutely fascinating. A rare opportunity and wonderful time I'll always treasure. I will not mention any persons names here, that I know and met there.
The LEDs used are Cree MCE LEDs, (now discontinued. Brightness is 3000 lumens. Amperage pull is 3 amps. Run time with 3000mAh batteries on high power should be 1 hour. If only 9 minutes is being achieved, most likely the batteries should be replaced.
Heat sink fins are not decorative, functional. These days heat sink fins are common, but at the time, they were not common. I was one of the first to power LEDs to such a level that serious considerations would be given to cooling. These days there are flashlights much brighter. The brightest flashlight I ever made was what I called Kong-21, which was 21,000 (most probably actual) lumens. Kong-21 was huge, and most assuredly at the time the brightest flashlight in the world. These days many make claims to high lumens, but, although I was not able to verify by testing in a lumens sphere, this was up there at or close to what I say. Kong-21. I used to post videos up on my Elektro Lumens TH-cam page, but now I make aluminum guitars, and all my videos are about the guitars I make. (Innovative Guitars).
The FireSword-V, as I call it, may become a rare collectors item. Maybe, someday it could be worth a fortune?? :)
Well, sorry, too long. I was going to be short. Oh well. I'm glad to answer questions, if any have them.

It's true that current lights have eclipsed it output-wise, but it was truly astonishing for its time, and it *still* is one of the most satisfying bits of machined product I own; this sucker is solid and heavy. I was fortunate enough to have gotten one of these flashlights while I was an intern at Google.
I think the craziest thing about this entire story isn't how amazing the Firesword-V is (and it *is* amazing).
The crazy thing is that I believe this Google variant is NRTL listed.
From what I understand, one of the engineering organizations at Google discovered the Firesword-V and wanted to place a big order to give out as a holiday gift. However, Google being a major company, you can't just give everyone a (potentially hazardous) gift without following all of the rules.
That meant that, in order to give these out to Googlers, they had to be tested and listed by an NRTL.
I believe Google worked with the creator to go through the process of getting the Firesword-V listed, which actually involved some design changes. Anyone who has been through this sort of thing can tell you that NRTL listing is not cheap, and it's not something you usually do for a few thousand units.
There are brighter flashlights now, but to me this is really special because of all of the effort that went into making this possible.

Quite a few years ago I was a Flashaholic. We were flashlight enthusiasts who would own, build, and/or make flashlights because they were fun to have and use. Some of us were more concerned about raw output while some liked the quality of the light produced or how far it could throw, etc. I was never really into high power lights but I was asked to modify a few D call Maglites into some really bright lights for it’s time. My brightest was a 2000 lumen direct drive 3D Maglite with a 1lb copper heat sink that I was never able to reproduce on a second example. I still have the second high bin SST-90 LED that was bought at the same time as the 2000 lumen emitter. Maybe it’s time to build another one? Adam, you want to build a flashlight?

Things have changed significantly in the flashlight world over the past few years. There are now plenty of lights that are as bright and several that exceed it in output, by several times. Crazy isn't it!?

Great video! I discovered it while searching for information about my Firesword, which I received as a Google employee. I never use it, partly because I have kids and it's legit dangerous. There's a jumper inside it to switch between its two brightness settings. I tried the brighter setting ... once. In broad, sunny daylight, and the spot was visible on the sidewalk.
