Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

It's hard to get out of the mindset of not creating masterpieces with every work. Thank you for sharing. I feel inspired to practice and paint studies.

and just remember that not everything will be a masterpiece, work in series of more than one piece of any subject helps too cause you not have that much pressure that every piece "needs to be perfect", and when you create something you are practicing, improving and learn something
Sometimes I want to paint so badly but it feels like the brush weighs a ton ... My problm is not to start a painting, I have tons of ongoing projects... but then I get to the stage that I actually really like the painting and I am mortified to finish it...
I bought 'The War of Art" and read it in one day...I cannot tell you how helpful it has been I have taken tons of notes and has completely addressed so much of my issues. Just wow but off course you know. Its a game changer for me thank you for recommending it.
As the gym rat I am, that gym metaphor really resonated with me haha. I train 6 days a week, and I don't necessarily want to go to the gym every day - but I always get myself there and always end up having a great time. I will definitely tap into that "mindset" to get myself to paint more :) thank you Chris!
I think this is great for doing the things you always wanted to do instead of waiting around for it to magically happen. But you need to recognize when it's time to be productive and when it's time for you to take time out and relax. Lots of people will pretend that they are working 24/7 and they are putting up a false image that is not healthy. There are times in your life where you won't be as productive and that's ok too.
Good to see it's common to struggle with inspiration, I'm also guilty of wasting too much time thinking about what to paint instead of painting whatever and improving on the way.
Thanks Coach, I painted a pic and gave it to a friend. When painting it I reviewed in my mind how much I appreciated them, I think it helped me to try harder to get it right. I have a lot of hours invested it, (didn’t keep track). I liked it so much when finished I painted another just like it for me, now I’m thinking who would like this one. Well my wife said make copies and give them out, (maybe sell some)! Nice video boss.

One of your best paint talks yet. A lot of sound art and business advise here. I do have something to add on the glass pallet...
First, don't let the paint dry. Then after you save any paint, paint thinner and a paper towel will clean it. If for some reason it does dry, steel wool and some elbow grease will clean it.
As an artist who has also done business stuff I completely agree with this advice. To be a an artist with a regular stream of income, you need to wear at least two hats, sometimes more! Great vid, you got a new subscriber 👍🏻
This is exactly the same for writing fiction...inspiration has almost zero to do with it beyond the idea....the rest is hard work and surprising yourself with the outcome.
Non-fiction ain't no picnic! One of my college professors told me I should think about writing professionally. I told her I would end up killing myself if I did. She thought I was kidding. Not! Anything done well is a slog.
@@claygreen4723 True! I've been a professional Non-fiction ghostwriter for more than 15 years and its tough too. Compared to fiction its a right brain left brain kind of thing. I was referencing the idea that so many people think fiction takes inspiration when its really just butt in the chair like every other kind of creative work. Non-Fiction is more formula for me and I find it easier but that's only after years of learning what the heck I'm doing lol.
This video, and all the other videos I've watched on this channel, have helped me SO much. It took me 20 years before I would bring oils into my rotation.. I've struggled with inspiration ALOT lately, but this video made so much sense.. learning that you have to sit down and paint even when you dont feel inspired is SO crucial.. and I JUST thought about the similarity with a gym, and you said it not 5 seconds later on the video. LMAIO!!! AND now I have a new book to buy!

Love the words of wisdom and they can be applied to pretty much every situation. Perseverance is the key to overcoming any obstacle. If you get knocked down 20 times, then get up 21. There's a reason why the phrase tortured artist exists. It's a struggle to get the ideas out of your head and into some physical form. Most of the time they will not look like you pictured it and that is pure torture. That's where the mundane practice comes in. You must practice your craft in order to have the skill to execute it when a great idea strikes.
I went to college to study art and yet not once did they cover the BUSINESS of being an artist (this was a long time ago however). Once I was out of school and working I had no idea about the business side of things. They did not teach the basics of promotion, selling, organizational skills, pricing, nothing. It hampered my life as an artist; tough learning curve.

I love painting. I just hate uploading on websites. And I have put myself on abstract punishment because I have 206 paintings stacked up to upload. I appreciate what you said, "show up every day". I get emotional about life experiences and then pout. Sales are slow so I feel discouraged. I liked the video.

I agree with everything Chris said. I'd like to add, if you don't know what to paint, go through paintings you've already done. Decide for yourself if there's anything you know you need to work on. Then, if you're not going to sell it, find images online that feature whatever that is. If you do want to sell it, go to Pixels.com for those images (they're not copy right restricted)
Or, revisit something you've already done. What worked? What didn't, what can you do different? Answer those questions about that painting, then try the painting again.
Inspiration will come and go. In the moments where the inspiration is lacking, see those as opportunities to do studies like this to continue to refine your skills. As you get better; grow your skills and expand your skills, just maybe, Inspiration will come easier and come from more sources.

yes , painting when you don't feel well or your mentally not ready .. when you have to paint you just do because you have to , you have to make money , you also have to learn to paint everything and step out of your comfort zone .. you will paint or draw some questionable stuff and stuff your not so proud of but that's the only way to learn by making mistakes we learn from it.
a good tip is to just practice fundamentals when you dont know what to create .. i find watching a movie or looking online can also inspire and watching videos like this .
The advice here about family and friends is good, and word of mouth and online is king ! helps to sell your work .. quality control is essential. Also when posting your artwork online , learn to take good photographs , your also selling your self ;) not just your artwork .

I read The War of Art a few years ago, and if anyone is reading this and hasn't checked it out already, please do so immediately. It is profoundly helpful. I come from a business background but have been an artist most of my life, but always had trouble getting out of my own head when it came to self doubts, demotivation, etc., and I can tell you the way Pressfield explains things will absolutely change your whole outlook. It is an amazing book.
At no point does he come across as a "guru" or act like he has all the answers, rather, it feels more like he is helping you to come to the answers on your own but just pointing out the dark voices that can keep you from taking the all-important next step. I strongly suggest it, not only to artists, but ANY creative person that struggles with a lack of confidence, motivation, artist's block, or anything else that may keep you from putting pen to paper and brush to canvas.

Tempered glass! I've been using glass from a picture frame and I've been afraid to break it....already broke one. Great idea! And thanks for your videos. I always learn something, even if I've seen the video in the past. I'm trying to paint everyday day if I can, life has gotten in the way in the past but I'm finally realizing that painting is what truly makes me happy and fills me up. I have an amazing family, but I seem to love and appreciate them more when I've given myself time to paint! Does that sound crazy? It's like if you're a coffee fan, you might enjoy your day more if you have your coffee haha. Anyway, keep up the great work!
I have JUST found you! I'm just learning to paint with oils, I want to do the eyes of my children.. I've already made my first mistake of starting from light to dark🤦♀️ (im a former acrylic painter) I'm struggling with finding the time around my husband and 4 young children and school runs etc...

I know someone who has for years practiced making impermanent drawings. In other words, she makes a drawing every day, and every day she destroys that drawing, letting it go. From my perspective, she appears to enjoy the process of drawing much more than the final result.
I already know what I really want to paint, as it has always been in the back of my mind to do, but it's getting the right size to work it on, and the cost of the canvas itself.

Your advice on commission work is perfect I received va commission from someone that saw one of my paintings at a friend's house he gave me a photo of an adobe house where his father spent his childhood , and he wanted it as a father days gift, the thing was the photo was horrible I told him I will do the best I can however it's not going to look like the photo and what I feel the photo was horrible but in the end he was crazy over it and his father loved it. I got another commission the next week from a member of his family.
Student (with bowed head): "I do not have any inspiration to draw. '"
Teacher: "What are you looking at? Draw that."
Took me a few decades to understand that, believe it or not. Being able to extract an interesting composition from just about anything is what we are talking about.
Have you considered making a discord server or something similar for your patreon subscribers to share their work, instead of, or in addition to Facebook? Just a suggestion because I don’t necessarily want to share my paintings with family members/etc that are on my Facebook, lol.

For the palette- you might put it into a freezer and it will not dry out. It is a bit wet, but works great for me👍
The easiest way I found to keep my pallet clean is I went to Goodwill and bought a picture frame that's about 18x12 inches with a piece of glass in it. That's my pallet. When I paint, I cover it with a piece of wax paper and tape it down. When I'm done painting, I just take the piece of wax paper off and throw it away. I used to use the razor on glass method which works great but I'm lazy so I'd sometimes let paint dry to it and it would be a real pain in the butt to scrape off
Good advice.
The easiest way to get inspired is to just pick up a brush and see what happens. Accepting that it's an exploration, the exploration of the space is the whole point and it is extremely rare that once they start moving paint an artist will remain uninspired. Once you take the attitude of 'what will I find today' rather than 'I've got to make another good painting to prove that I'm good at this' everything else follows. In my head I think of everything as a 'study' rather than a painting, that way I don't get precious about an image being profound enough to paint. I often take photos of nothing spectacular, but maybe the light is doing something interesting. Yesterday I painted a 5 x 7 of some garden slabs in the grass, plus the shadow of the sun over it. A non-composed picture, of a 'boring' subject that could never be a Glorious Painting, it didn't even feature much design of shapes. Color of the light and how it hit a basic form. Spent about an hour, it was okay for what it is, but I learned and enjoyed the dance of bouncing colour around the canvas. Today I will paint whatever again.
I can completely relate to the person's feelings, but they have to recognise they are putting up mental barriers and ultimately missing the point. The process is the magic, simply keep moving paint in ways you haven't done before. Most musicians spend time playing in crumby dives giving less-than-amazingly profound performances, but they do it so often because they love it, it's about doing what you love the way you feel like doing it and then if that happens enough, you might stumble on something interesting and it begins to appear like you are doing great things... but you're doing the same thing you've always done, you've just done it longer and with more freedom than others, you didn't stop. You didn't trick yourself into apathy. You explored, you found something that only you could find. Finally everybody gathers around to see it too. 'huh' they say

I'm Indonesian. Born and raised. We have an Indonesian version of Tolstoy here: Pramoedya Ananta Toer. In one of his interviews, the late Pramoedya were asked about how he dealt with "writer's block". He simply said, he never had any. Why? Simple: if I don't write that day, I don't eat. That is the most powerful non-advice "advice" I've ever encountered.

I have a question, and I'm not sure if you've answered it before in another video. But I'm wondering, do you always have to varnish a painting? Someone wants me to paint a replica of my fourth ever oil painting to buy. How long do I need to wait to varnish it, if I need to varnish it at all, before I sell it? I'm still new to oil painting and art in general. I'm surprised she wanted to buy that painting at all honestly, but I'm not going to turn down the experience. I criticize my painting and what I am capable of doing if I practiced at doing it. I would love to be able to paint like some great artist but I know that I can't draw or paint like anyone but myself. I am unique and there is nobody like me so I should just paint how I paint and not be too hard on myself. New subscriber here.

I use isopropyl alcohol to clean my glass palette after I scrap the paint of.
