James Stacy was such a gifted and natural actor. He was a stand out in all his roles. His looks drew your attention, but his acting skills kept you interested in the story he was telling.

So much to love about this episode ... The suspense, the tender romance, the little comic bits ... absolutely the very best episode of a superb series.
It's cute when Johnny's riding out to the line shack, how he sings jauntily... not like the singing cowboys (Autry, Rogers, Dean, etc) in their movies, just casually, in an untrained voice, like any regular, nonprofessional singer...
And in the bandage-removal scene, a staple in so many similar plots, his whispered "I'm scared," is so touching, so believable, and gives us such a look into the sweet, gentle soul of Johnny Lancer.

    • @shanonkay907

James Stacy had a beautiful voice, both singing and speaking. The song he's singing is an old cowboy tune "The Chisholm Trail".

Mattie lead such a hidden shut away life, she had no idea that she was BEAUTIFUL. ..Johnny being blinded, couldn't see how beautiful she was.. but he felt her beauty with his hands, she walked in beauty like the night of cloudless climes and starry skies.. but Johnny felt her beauty. I think she really left him because she was afraid he wouldn't still love her if he could see again. That he wouldn't see her outer beauty. But what a great story line it would have been had he seen her face...he already knew by touch she was BEAUTIFUL and he loved her for that...he saw with his heart and not his eyes and she loved him so much she thought he would be better off without her!!! Sad the writers didn't "see" it that way. A WONDERFUL life they could have had. She could have been the light of the dark side of Johnny !! She was the real gold.

I think this is the very best episode of a great, great show. It has everything - drama, suspense, character development, a little humor, and a sweet, tender romance.
As another reviewer has noted, Mattie is 'luminous': of all the pretty girls who were love interests for Johnny or Scott throughout the series, Mattie is the most genuine, truly loving heroine. She's tender, gentle, determined, feisty, and funny - the one I most would have liked Johnny to end up with. But of course, it's a given that on TV westerns, any girl that gets married or engaged to the hero must be killed or succumb to a fatal disease!

A great movie could have been made out of Johnny finding Mattie ...like the Pinkertons found Scott in Boston. It would have been so sweet to see Johnny knock at a door and Mattie open it. They see each other. That would have made an awesome Christmas movie...even if Johnny's arm & leg were already missing...What a great movie that would have been !!! I loved this episode most of all. Half a century after filming we don't have access to composer Robert Drasnin's fine music score for 'Blind Man's Bluff' but surely the cue played three times is titled something along the lines of 'Mattie's Theme.'
Here it is -- and 'how sweet the sound' -- at:
    26:45 - 28:14
    30:38 - 32:31
    48:37 - 49:51
And the face behind the name, a luminous Melissa Murphy as Mattie, could hardly be prettier than at:
    30:53 - 31:03.
This is one of my top three "Lancer" episodes*. Upon repeat viewing one can't imagine this one without the beautiful score.
    "Thank you, 'Lancer Fan.'"
*'The High Riders' (pilot) and 'Julie' (Susan Strasberg) complete the list.

IN THIS EPISODE I THINK THAT MATTIE WAS THE PERFECT WOMAN FOR JOHNNY. THEY WERE IN SYNC WITH ONE ANOTHER. WHEN HE GOT HIS SIGHT BACK ONLY TO FIND THAT MATTIE WAS GONE, BROKE MY HEART, BUT WITH HIM RUNNING BARE FOOT THROUGH THE FIELD AND SHE IS CRYING & NOT LOOKING BACK WAS EVEN WORSE. BUT SHE KNEW THAT IF SHE LOOK BACK, HER LOVE FOR HIM WOULD CAUSE HER TO STAY. SO WITH THE SAME CONVICTIONS THAT SAME LOVE CAUSE HER TO GIVE HIM UP AND TO KEEP LOOKING FORWARD, TO LET HIM GO. ( THAT'S WHAT LOVE WILL DO TO YOU). NOTE I WISH THAT BEFORE THE SHOW ENDED, I WISH THEY WOULD HAVE MADE A SEQUEL TO THIS EPISODE IN WHICH MATTIE COMES BACK FOR JOHNNY AND WITH A VOICE TO LET HIM HEAR THE WORDS THAT HE SAID TO HER. INSTEAD IT WOULD BE HER SAYING. "JOHNNY IT'S ME, I LOVE YOU JOHNNY"! NOW THAT WOULD BE AN EPIC LANCER STORYLINE.
NOTE: IT MAY NOT WOULD HAVE HAPPEN, BUT WE ALL WISH THAT IT WOULD HAVE. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL STORY FOR THE LANCER FANS.

I do recall Little Joe getting hitched, with much publicity, but she died the next week - LOL!

@@zafoid42 " . . . didn't think she was good enough . . . " ?!?! Johnny's in love with her far beyond Mattie having been his 'eyes' and his saving grace at his most vulnerable.
" . . . before he could see her and the disappointment in his eyes." At minimum, Johnny and Mattie have been at Lancer at least a week while he's recovering. We know they've already consummated their relationship 'THAT night' at the cabin [Johnny re Mattie: "I never knew night could be so sweet."]. There would be no reason for that intensity of love to not continue at Lancer while Johnny is under the doctor's care.
If Mattie has doubts about her physical beauty, well, Murdoch, Scott and Teresa together and individually would rave about and assure blind Johnny something along the lines of "Johnny, Mattie is so pretty she make every girl in Morro Coyo and Green River look like Grandma Moses. . . . You already know how beautiful she is as a person; rest assured -- her physical features match and surpass." The casting office selected Melissa Murphy -- ideally suited.
"If he was still blind she would have stayed." If he was still blind, in time, eventually, on his own volition and with his father's, brother's, Teresa's and Mattie's blessings he would have moved to San Francisco or Sacramento where there are live-in facilities for the visually handicapped, i.e., blind individuals. And with the family's money, an instructor specializing in speech therapy would be located and hired to assist and instruct Mattie, remaining at Johnny's side. And in due time -- the two Mr. & Mrs. and maybe returning to Lancer.
However, this being an episodic TV western wherein the young, handsome, virile man of the West by design remains single. This serves the purpose of allowing the flexibility and potential for a few times each season a love story can fit in, ideally / typically with one of the familiar, attractive young actresses making the rounds of primetime dramas in guest star fashion.
'Blind Man's Bluff' -- a winner all around.

This episode shows how vulnerable Johnny can be and ties in well to what Asham said about him never hitting the bottom in Warburton's Edge, you see it in Pony Alice too, he's got an immaturity about him that likely comes from his having raised himself with no real parental guidance, which goes back to his telli g Pony he was an Orphan, and also telling Jelly's boys he fended for himself , I can't remember the exact words he used with them.

From what you can finally see here of James's ring , it looks to be a Lapis set in a double silver band, typical for a Mexican made piece. Also, I read ann article yesterday that talked about the house he rode on the series, seems it was his personal mount, it had been a gift from John Wayne, given to him after his ex-wife Kim Darby did True Grit with wi him, they used the horse's actual name in the series as well., Barranca(sp?])as what Johnny had named the horse, when in actuality, this was it's what John Wayne had named it when he owned it.

One of my favorite year-two episodes, 'Blind Man's Bluff', about which I commented in years past. Yet, the entries for it -- and select other episodes -- are totally gone, vanished; and NOT by my doing. No, Disney (20th Century Fox's -- "Lancer" producer, 1968 - 70 -- owner as of 2019) hasn't reached that far -- yet.
So, TH-cam family, who -- and why -- excised, took down, "blew away" seven years' worth of my / SC Vandy's "Lancer" comments? Dozens of informative sentences, many being helpful, accurate answers to other fans' or newcomers'-to-"Lancer" questions.
Even though I have a complete DVD series set, I just happened to come here, late Jan. 2020, after seeing "Once Upon a Time in . . . Hollywood" for the fourth time, thankfully again in theaters on its re-release for awards season, to read updates about the pivotal episode 'The High Riders' and new, relevant comments re Quentin Tarantino's great movie that ingeniously and uniquely incorporated elements of "Lancer".
Dozens of SC Vandy entries have vanished, by someone's malicious doing.

IF i'd been writing this episode, I'd have had Maddie take off Johnny's wet shirt and boots when he was shivering by the water then get him in a dry blanket at the cabin.

@@debrarick9617 I think he was so anxious about whether he would see again or not at that moment, he wasn't focused on the feel of Mattie's hand. I so loved this episode and would have loved to have the series end with Mattie coming back to Lancer and Johnny.

I had such a crush on James Stacy that I finally wrote him a fan letter and drove to the Beverly Hilton where I saw he was going to be for some event and left it for him. He actually called me and we became friends and eventually lovers for several years, until I moved out of state, but we still kept in touch. Was excited to see his character of Johnny Madrid was nicely portrayed in the movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Miss him and his fun sense of humor.

Not much chance of catching a horse drawn wagon on barefoot mate.

He was hoping his pleas -- "I LOVE you, Mattie" "Come back; it's ME" -- would have pulled at the good doctor's heart so that he pulls on the reins OR Mattie motions for him to do that: STOP. I don't think viewers even gave it a thought that Johnny, on foot and barefoot at that, or any man / woman, is gonna outrun a horse. Because it's impossible.
He missed his chance by not hopping on Barranca, because that beautiful palomino of his would have caught up in quick time.
Goof: I'll take a calculated guess that Johnny and Mattie have been at Lancer for at least a week while he convalesces. Before the bandages came off, and even though his mind is on the BIG question: 'will I see?' or 'will I be blind?', Johnny would have easily recognized that Teresa's medium size fingers were not Mattie's, which we've observed to be long and slender. With Mattie being a country girl, necessitating performing chores indoors and outside both, her hands are surely courser than Teresa's.

That was her uncle, not father, according to the doctor. He also said that Lem (uncle's name) apparently thought it was a "judgement of heaven" (her being mute) . That probably is why he kept space in the floor so that she could hide if someone came. Remember, at the beginning Murdoch told Scott that they only way that Lem would work for Lancer is if he got to go home every night. Rumors were made by others that he had gold stashed but it was to take care of her & nobody knew that reason.
