I love the units that have the pre-in pre-out jumpers, it sure saves a lot of time. It is the first place I check also. Those slider tape monitor switches are also problematic. Lucky to find a failed intermittent connection like that so fast. Bad failed solder joints are probably the number two problem I run across, especially in high heat areas like regulators and power supplies. Number one problem is dirty mechanical switches on these old units. Helping a friend today diagnose his same unit, this video will be real helpful. Thanks for posting this. It is nice to see the potential problem areas like the layered boards and ground issues so I don't make the same mistakes.
Pretty cool to see a piece of electronic equipment actually designed to be serviced, and not just a blob of epoxy containing everything! There are a lot of people on TH-cam interested in stuff like this - reminds me of two really popular channels I watch, bigclivedotcom and Mr Carlson’s Lab. Looking forward to seeing what other projects you are working on 👍
i have one of these and i bought it 37 years ago. it is still working without issue. i have it connected to a russound internet player for a whole house audio system. it is on 24/7 and has zero issues. i paid around $1000 for it so i am guessing it was worth the money. great video. good to know in case mine ever has an issue.
I've got one I bought new in about 88. Still in great shape. Haven't turned it on in a while. Will hook it up again one of these days soon. I've been thinking of doing a recap one of these days.
There should be a service panel on the bottom of the unit to avoid needing to remove the stacked boards. Also, the front panel slides off if you remove the 4 screws (2 top, 2 bottom) that hold it in place. That way you can tighten the pots without damaging the faceplate. You will also need to unplug the connectors to the display, tuner, etc. So still better to leave that to your friend 😅
I picked up one of these and really like it / the only thing is the DOWN scanning button on the FM/AM is not working, only the UP scanning button / any idea what this could be ? all else works and unit looks Mint.
It's hard to say without seeing it. Could be a bad switch contact or could be something on a board. Wish I was able to give you a more specific answer.
Aloha RocketRoberts Nice repair. I have the same amp just die on me I wonder if you can help me what the problem i turn on amp LCD display won't light up only one yellow line lid up on the far left and the amp start to smoke i open up and see no burnt parts or any capacitors is leaking or blow up no burn resistor or anything, Do you know where should i check. Much mahalo for your help braddah
I'm guessing you are in Hawaii (I've visited there 18 times). Unfortunately I'd need to have the unit on my bench to do a basic assessment. Sounds like it could be some kind of power supply failure.... but again, near impossible to diagnose without it here. Wish I had a better answer for you. If you were nearby I'd say "bring it over"!

Pre-out/amp in jacks are VERY helpful. Agree that corroded switches (and pots) are among the most common issues wit vintage units.

Nice unit. Glad to see it repaired and ready for some more great audio playback.

They are definitely way above average when it comes to quality.

Great vid. It is very helpful. Thank you
I always find the service panel as I’m wrapping up the repair 😂
I believe it’s the whole bottom panel on that Carver.

I can't remember if there was a service panel or not...

@@RocketRoberts too lazy to do anything about it now and it doesn't bother me, one day i look at it :). thanks for reply
Mine powers on but no sound comes out. Don’t know if it’s worthwhile trying to fix it or not?
Why would the tuner display be out? I have one with that problem.
Could be any one of a number of issues. No way to know with out running some tests.
Keep making videos Joe!
More to come as time allows!
help mu mxr 150 might have cooked capps heat and faint snoke on my output shunt resistors im cry
Why don't you use a resistor dummy load so you don't have to listen to the frequency generator? That would drive me insane!
I do sometimes... but on this occasion I used a speaker.
Never liked that type of heat sink. It was the beginning of the great compromise in audio.
Most likely it cut the cost to the consumer.

Where are you located? I have that model Carver and have a channel that is out. Like to have repaired if possible.
I am located in Connecticut

you should have a laptop downstairs with you so that you don't have to go back and forth when viewing schematics. just a thought
