Guitar String Frequency Analysis using MATLAB

  • In this video we take a look at the frequency makeup of the sound of a guitar string when plucked. We start with plucking a guitar string, recording it using a TASCAM hand-held digital recorder, then transfer the sound file to the computer (WAV format file). The file is then imported into MATLAB, and a one second chunk of the data is extracted (we do this so that the FFT frequency bins will be 1 Hz wide). The FFT of the sound clip is then calculated by MATLAB, normalized in scale and displayed in a plot in dB relative to full scale. In the FFT (magnitude) plot, the harmonics are talked about, not only the number of them, but how the phase of each frequency is important as well.

      Yes! I increased the size of the font, and used a video editor that supports 4K video.
      Now I have to go back and re-do some of the mall videos in full 4k!
