70% of my recommended page is videos I’ve already watched, 20% is videos I haven’t watched but have already been recommended and ignored, 9% of it is new videos I haven’t seen, but don’t want to watch. 1% is interesting content
Yes. So often that is the case. and there are supposed to be so many millions of videos out there, why do we get the same ones recommended so often? On the other hand,as I click on a recommendation i see one I might want to see but when I go back to the page it's gone. Hope there were some words in the thumbnail to help searching for it. =
I feel like it only really starts to recommend videos you've already watched if you go back and watch something you had watched before. Because I haven't really had it do that for a while. I do also wonder if subscribing to a channel makes the algorithm worse.
Another good thing Dropout does is put their money right back on the screen. The latest Game Changer finale comes to mind - the Ratfish eps had to cost SO MUCH to produce, and they were 100% worth it. It makes me feel better about kicking them a few bucks every month when I know for a fact that money's going right back into the production, and not into enriching shareholders.
@@MarquisdeL3 I don't remember ever receiving those emaisl, but I keep in mind which day of the month the payment happens anyway, so I know when is best for me to cancel it, if I ever decide to do it
Dropout is one of those ones that I'm always cancelling and restarting my subscription. Game changer always ends up bringing me back in because it reminds me so much of the old college humour
@@elbrucesI think that massively undersells the amount of time and work the Dropout team put in to Ratfish. It wasn’t just a few hotel rooms for a few days, that would’ve been incredibly boring. It was a large cast, a few hotel rooms, detailed and personalized SETS in those hotel rooms (which take a lot of time and effort to make), individual camera and sound crews for each room, on TOP of all the writing, directing, producing, and editing done. Dropout employs an incredibly impressive number of prop artists, hair and makeup artists, audio and visual designers and crew, editing teams, and writing teams. That level of staffing is not cheap, and consistently putting out quality work is also not cheap. Kudos to the Dropout team for making it clear where the money I pay to them goes.
"you do realise that one day you're gonna wake up and see the last minecraft video that you're ever gonna watch. you do know that, right?" something very simple and profound about this line
Yeah, I think my last Minecraft video was Drunk Minecraft with Markiplier, the one that had him have his surgery. In a real sense, yeah, one day we'll stop watching content we used to like I haven't watched a TOVG/Completionist video for a loooooooong while, and then the evidence of his not using charity money he leeched of people just made ne unsubscribe, as an example.
right? like on the one hand true, but on the other hand minecraft videos are something that bring me a lot of joy and I can't imagine *not* still watching them... but one day I will. Probably sooner than I think. It's wild.
Thing is, I know Watcher changed their decision - but I haven't come back to them. I tried but now, every time i see Shane or Ryan, all I see is two people that would have said "See ya auckers!" if that first weekend of signups for their streaming channel had went well.
Same, and it makes me so sad because while I enjoyed the original series and their chemistry I just can't bring myself to watch anymore, it's like trying to hang out with a former friend you don't really like anymore
You just did what you denounced. You tricked me into watching more and more of your CONTENT, by making it well-written, insightful commentary on the current state of this platform, pandering to my curiosity. We do not know each other, but your hard work made a lot of people and myself happier today!
The algorithm now is so so bad. Recommending crap and if you watch 1 video about 1 thing, it will bombard you with similar videos. TH-cam shorts horts is just a crap pit. Muzic is more on youtube music now. Also , the : do not recommend channel does Not work.
To be honest, this is actually true. If you watch all cooking videos for example and accidently watch a video on a horror game, youtube won't stop crapping out horror videos for you instead of cooking videos.
The thing I've noticed is that despite all the content farms and inauthentic garbage ar the top, "old TH-cam" still exists, and that the algorithm regularly suggests smaller channels if that is how you engage with the website. When your home page recommends a video with 10k or less views, watch it, comment, subscribe. When it recommends garbage, click "don't recommend this video". I've done this consistently and now my home page is pretty much exactly what I want: a mix between channels I'm subscribed to and similar content from small to mid sized creators.
i know next year youtube plan to help push smaller channels a lot more too, i think it was called a hype page, which is like a trending page but for youtubers with way less subs
Mr. Beast’s weird Lunchables/chocolate bar venture stuns me the most because immediately after I saw it out in the wild on a vacation my brain wondered if I fell into a wormhole and this was one of the signs that the universe wasn’t right. Also, in an *ironic twist of events* you’re funny to me, a 30 year old woman who set up this TH-cam account around 2014-ish and never used it because fiddling with it was too hard.
Bo Burnham’s Inside was a beautiful punch to the gut. It really hit me emotionally. I wish you had talked about it a little more. I’m a TH-cam premium member because I got sick of the ads. Most of the channels I’m subscribed to have fewer than 500k followers, and the ones that have over 500k have modified their content to appease The Algorithm.
TH-cam videos are of crap quality as always because there are no standards to uphold, but in terms of influence, a youtuber could start a WW3 if he said the wrong thing and got picked up by the algorithm, or has enough views as mrbeast/pewdiepie.
If someone has a show on Netflix, you could 100% say they're in the mainstream. The day that everyone who uploads a youtube video can say the same (never), it'll be mainstream as a whole.
The only thing that is killing YT are the advertisers, the algorithm has been skewed so far to the corporations that to find an original creators content you already have to know the creator or the vid title. Try finding a vid that only has "the date" as the title, even with content info you will get thousands of cooperate produced crap vids first.
the algorithm is advertising. The purpose of the algorithm is to place your eyes in front of as many ads as possible for as long as possible. That's its only purpose. Everything else, like showing you vids you enjoy, or showing you vids you don't enjoy but somehow find yourself watching anyway, is just means to the end of its primary purpose. And it has to be that way, because ads are where the money comes from, and Google being a publicly traded company is required to seek out ever more money, every year, infinitely, until it possesses all of the money or dies
The algorithm pushed this one to me, but I really did enjoy this video. Very insightful, well thought out, and worth the watch. Like you said, the authenticity of TH-cam is really what sets it apart. It's like getting to hear someone give a talk or lecture, but on-demand.
Dude how do you manage to seamlessly integrate philosophy with topical discussions so meaningfully? It's amazing, thanks for making me feel 10% smarter after watching your video, you well read goof! 🎉
Omg I just commented on an old upload of yours saying something like you forgotten about us now that you get hundreds of thousands of views and now here you are brightening my rainy Helene dreary day. Thank you , sir , for proving me completely opposite of super green. Love you and keep on keeping on
Starkid posts all the pro-shots of their musicals on youtube, but having extras behind a paywall, and because what they put out is so excellent, it's not hard to spend a lot on the bonuses, the kickstarters, the digital tickets and the show tickets. It's a completely different system than subscription sites 'cause, well, they're highly produced shows, but it does display how with great content, people will show immense support!
while watching this I suddenly flashed back to the time that Trixie and Katya briefly did their TH-cam show as a traditionally-produced broadcast show that was paywalled to some random VOD channel thing. I have no idea whose idea it was and who put that idea through but it was astoundingly bad.
The algorithm spat one of your videos at me the other day and since then I’ve been binging your videos while I cook supper each night. So sometimes it works! Keep up the good work dude I enjoy your videos on par with Kurtis Conner and the like.
at the end you PERFECTLY captured a thought that I've been entertaining for a while now - things will eventually circle back, no matter what people who have been on this site long enough to see it fall will try to recapture what was so great about it, essentially stealing back the will to try and aim for true authenticity again (rather than falling into an algorithmic, capitalist-controlled daze, only watching what is presented and not putting thought behind how it was conceived - though i can hardly blame people for falling into it when it's literally pushed everywhere ;-;) I'd like to say that one day, after this extreme of user activity, moderation will eventually start to cement itself the more we realise the situation we're in things like generative AI, "competition" between social media sites, and companies pushing for more and more and MORE will eventually come to a head and fall back down, no matter what (whether it be ugly or fuckn awesome) and this EXACT sentiment can be used for so many other factors of life as well the push to see real people throw their own human ideas out there without a single push to simply, say, make more money or adhere to a certain formula, is something i look forward to seeing again (AND THANK YOU SIR FOR THIS INCREDIBLE VIDEO??? you did amazing so BE PROUD)
no worries, i'm glad i've put some words to that feeling! it's always cyclical, life will always revert when enough people make enough money from one thing and get bored, eventually mr beasts style will be new and fresh again sadly thanks for the nice words though it is super kind to hear!
The ads have become so aggressive and long recently. If a video has a 30+ sec ad before it, I close the window and won't watch either. It's not worth it.
Like, honestly, you are the living summary of this, I'm shocked to see you have less than 18.000 subs (no burn intended) because this video has so much quality and analysis and humor. It's very unfair that the algorithm doesn't reward this.
13:26 Alone is a good show for authenticity but hard to replicate since y'know, there's a high risk of death/injury and contestants are left alone in the middle of Canada. But it makes moments that feel 'unreal' hit harder, like when someone went up and stabbed a muskox to death for food, 'reality TV' plays things safe so you don't get a feeling like that.
Many of those who are leaving TH-cam are doing it because they've been around long enough to earn a fair amount of money, and they don't need it anymore. Their videos will still generate revenue for years to come. Some of them even find a replacement (such as the guy from Game Theorists). They think they can do other things that are more enjoyable and more profitable. It's that simple.
Why has he started waffling about a bunch of philosophical mumbo-jumbo? I didn't know he was so well-read and interesting and cool. 😎 But for real, another banger video. This is already becoming my favorite video on TH-cam ABOUT TH-cam, and this just shows how good you are at all this.
hahahahahah i got so confused to start off with reading that i thought they sounded familiar honestly thank you as usual for your kind words it means a lot!!
Excellent video. To be honest though TH-cam for me is starting to creep back into being decent (and your videos are a part of that). Another note on the death of TV: TV can't easily compete with TH-cam not only because of authenticity but recency bias. Why watch something that is high production (even something legitimately artistic or authentic) that came out even only few months ago when 3-4 new decent TH-cam videos have come out in the past hour taking about something immediately relevant and currently talked about? Our atomization makes us crave recency even more because we want the sense of an ongoing conversation and you don't want to be the guy that's trying to push for a conversation about how you just watched Cyberpunk Edgerunners for the first time or something when everyone has already watched and discussed it.
I've seen my views drop drastically on my videos since the algorithm change when they started pushing shorts. I film events where I run into my viewers almost constantly. Many tell me that YT doesn't recommend my videos to them despite being subscribers. I keep my overhead relatively low, so most videos are still profitable, but I really can't spend more than I am right now traveling to these events. I had plans to travel further to events before the big drop. Right now I'm hanging on just hoping YT fixes things because I really enjoy filming videos. I have also benefited from all the steps I get walking while covering events.
Quality vid as usual Henry, always surprises me to see your sub count being lower than it should be! What's the song you used at 22:00 min for the transition?
TH-cam has taught me to be so cynical to the point I'm doing the Threat-Assessment Once-Over™ to _videos_ now. Like, you know how your SO will introduce you to a friend or ex, and you get one second to look them up and down, seeing what you can compliment them on / criticise about them if the need arises? That's me, but with _TH-cam videos._ Just this video as an example (apologies in advance!), the generic question title with the image/face/text format on the thumbnail made my teeth itch. The "haha I'm so bad at this" attitude feels overdone and clichéd to hell, and _of course_ you'd be holding a stand microphone, despite leaving on display an arm that could hold it out of frame and allow you to freely move your hands! These are signs of genuineness, yeah? Yet here I am, instinctively going "mm" and thinking how it could be manufactured to _seem_ genuine. I'm overthinking the 50/50 constantly, because TH-cam has instilled that kind of cynicism in my brain. Worse off, you don't deserve it! Even if every aspect of your online personality has been crafted to appear authentic as possible, you've still provided a solid think piece and a positive use of my time. Thinking this way is terrible, yet it's still what comes to mind even when enjoying myself. What a mess. As I mentioned though, I did enjoy the video. Thank you.
i completely get that train is thought, i imagine it'll only get worse with all the ai generated nonsense we will have pushed into our faces once people get more used to it's inner workings it's difficult from this side too, like trying to be yourself but also understanding the need to show a part of you for people to want to watch, it's a big ol' conundrum
I, like many others, try my best to avoid all the marketable content online as much as possible. Big part of that is due to studies; can't waste too much time anymore, but the rest of the reason why has been fully captivated in this video. Honestly my guy, I liked the MCU movie (I feel sorry for your soul and body) and I liked this one as well, so you're getting a sub :)
I didn't even watch CollegeHumor back when they were making videos for TH-cam, but Dropout is the one streaming service i will happily pay for every month. Great, creative, funny people, making great, creative, funny content, and doing it ethically and inclusively. Take my money, Sam Reich!
Something I think the community could actually do (aka something I'm definitely not going to do) would be to make something like, I dunno, "Little TH-cam", where there's no front page, no recommendations, and you can only find stuff by specifically searching for it or being recommended it - kinda like TH-cam when it first stated out and everyone agrees it was better. Most of what people hate about TH-cam seems to be the way it waves stuff in your face that you weren't really looking for and don't really want; or stuff that's intended to game the algorithm rather than just be on the site for people to find. Maybe there could be, like, curated playlists of stuff, I dunno. I guess this probably already exists somewhere, probably on Reddit or Tumblr, but it seems like the best way to "fix" a problem that TH-cam itself has literally negative incentive to fix. But the biggest problem with this (kind of) is that it's probably not going to help anybody get rich, or even quit their job. I miss when TH-camrs were mostly people who either had, or had to have had, a job at some point. I think some of the worst parts of modern TH-cam culture have a lot to do with a whole generation of content producers who have literally never had any other job. So much of their content has the same tone and style to it, because the only experience they have to draw on is making TH-cam videos.
i know exactly what you mean and to be fair, i got an email the other day from youtube saying how theyre releasing something next year called a hype page, which is basically for youtubers under a certain threshold of subscribers and you can push and upvote youtubers you think should be higher so that's cool (even though it'll probably get manipulated and broken in a week)
Hello! I'm new to your channel, I think the algo brought me here cause I'm a big Dropout fan. Really interesting video! I would like to gently point out that unfortunately your captions are quite difficult to follow. I rely on captions to help me process audio information, and there were several times where the captions didn’t match, or there were little jokes hidden in them. The lines are also really, really long, much longer than standard/recommended captioning protocol. I see these little issues a lot when people copy/paste their script into the caption line data, so I have a feeling that's what's happened here. I know people do that to get the proper capitals and periods, but it's not great captioning practice to have such long lines without breaks and it's really disorienting for folks who rely on them to understand to have jokes and things not present in the video in the captions. You're probably doing everything yourself so I understand if this isn't your priority, but I thought I'd point this out in case you'd like to make sure you're reaching the part of your audience who needs them to understand. Cheers 🎉
Still salty over the Watcher situation. The official subreddit is trying to prune any criticism over it, too lol. They really thought they could pull a Dropout but, they don't have the volume of interesting content like Dropout to really be worthy of a streamer. Also Travel Season is just... not very good. They don't even really discuss the food beyond "Mm" "Thats good" "Yeah thats real good"
funny story, the top thing on my recommended videos below this one is the movie "Idiocracy." which is both an answer to the title of this video, and a relevant social commentary on modern youtube culture in general lmao.
That last line was so simple, so silly in terms of what it was referencing, but god damn did it pack a massive punch, props to you man, this is an incredibly well done video
For Beacon (the critical role platform) its well recieved in the fandom because of a few reasons: firstly, nothing changes for non-subs, they still get episode vods the same time as usual or live on the same platforms at the same time. subscribers get a few exclusives as well as vods soon as episodes are live. this is something a lot of people already paid for via twitch for the same price but without the exclusives.
That last minecraft video comment made me realize i really need to find a new good minecraft youtuber. It is still my favorite but i dont have any that i actually consistently watch anymore. Also chadchad spotted wooo
as a big critical role fan It was kinda funny that they announced Beacon only a tiny while after the whole Watcher situation, but also just re-enforced my faith in their practices. They were not moving any shows exclusively to Beacon, and it's pricing was the exact same as their Twitch sub so it was presented more as a "switch the way you support us" rather then a desperate cry for help.
And yes, Dropout knew exactly what they were doing and they continually add new shows and content. It's been by far the BEST money I've spent on a subscription ever
You know, I recently subscribed to this channel after some good videos, but I put off watching this when I saw it because the title kinda put me off - not quite sure what it was about it. But after watching this, I have to say: that's a damn good videos. It's just really good. Definitely earned the bell from me for further video. Also I had no idea Smosh was back. Gonna have to check that out. I used to watch those guys before my back hurt...
re: the beginning of the "intentions" section, i want to re-emphasize that even if a youtube channel already HAS editors, writers, cinematographers, etc as part of its production process, the biggest shift in stakeholder is still the fact that youtubers' executive producers are always, ALWAYS the viewers. even sponsorship money is brought in by viewership. yes, the move to mainstream media creates a new group of people relying on the creator for employment, but more importantly, it creates a new group of people directly giving the creator money
Thank you for this. Nice one. Great job. Maybe its my ears, I have replayed your comment several times. With your mention of 1950s films (13:25); did you say "The Admiral Crichton? My schoolmates could not pronounce Admirable, so they called it "Admiral". They were only 10 years old at the time. It is understandable. If I am going deaf, it is important for me to know now. Was it Admiral or Admirable? In your own time. Cheers.
The huge overaching issue, is that humans especially in the current world want stability, familiarity and comfort. Netflix and youtube have some much content that it is overwhelming. Therefore a lot of people just rematch what they liked because at this point scrolling for 30 minutes, clicking on something watching 10 minutes realising it's not that good and having to scroll again. Is too much, people will just rewatcg what they already have that they know is good. I only had netflix because of Top Gear and Only fools and horses, both got removed and even though there were 100s of other shows that I'm sure I'd like. I just needed the comfort blanket of those shows I know are good and therefore cancelled my subscription. Same his happening with youtube, if yourubwrs go out of their niche people will not want to watch it as they want familiarity, burn out from the charcters will come along because of constantly doing the same thing, and still have to come up with new iterations of the same thing.
Welp, for whatever reason the divine algorithm recommended this to me even though it was mostly about people I have never heard of. An interesting essay and an insight into something that's often just cultural background noise for me. So now do I subscribe, do I want to go through whatever other content you have produced and establish an unhealthy parasocial relationship with another person I will never meet...
Yo Henry, got recommended this Video and I extremely enjoyed it! Really nice storytelling and pace, it fits exactly my style. Just a small FYI "critique": Something is off with the bass layer on the audio. I watched the video on my magical box in the living room with my surround speakers and the subwoofer was making weird noises as if the bass is a few miliseconds behind the normal audio
@henryisdumb it's really minor, but I confirmed it's only with your video. I would say it sounds like there's a wineglass standing on top of the subwoofer, this is how it sounds like. A small, barely noticeable delay or vibration
13:45 to add on to this point, the producers of Survivor have stated multiple times that they won't do a cold season for two reasons: the biggest is actually safety- cold hazards are often a lot harder to combat than hot hazards, but the other is absolutely entertainment. people huddle up and dress heavy when they're cold, they don't move around. we even see this in survivor its self with some rainier seasons like China and Philippines showing the contestants being trapped in their shelters. when it's hot? they dress in bikinis and board shorts and shuffle in to smaller groups. it's all absolutely manipulated
While I understand a lot of the cynicism about TH-cam content (as I've been on the site since it started, basically), there are SO many channels out there that are small, but incredibly entertaining and well produced. I feel like TH-cam as a whole had a life cycle with it's creators, where some get large, oversaturate the algorithm with a certain type of content, and then fizzle out, just like any other life cycle. Large creators leave, keep making the same content, or just disappear leaving behind a gap for smaller content creators to begin making great content of their own. I also think a lot of people take for granted the quality of videos now, in 2024. When I started watching TH-cam, everything was so new and fresh to people that it didn't matter if it was just a facecam of a dude playing horror games in his dimly lit room; it was new. Exciting. Entertaining. With the quality floor of TH-cam rising year over year, videos are better produced, edited, and written than ever before. I've seen videos by people with 1,000 subs make incredibly detailed videos about a topic their passionate about that blows me away. When TH-cam started you'd be lucky if the video was edited in windows movie maker and didn't have a bandicam logo in the top right. TH-cam is ever changing, and so are the creators. I believe that if you ignore the AI written slop, the site is still a great place to go for entertaining and engaging content about literally any topic you can think of.
I'm old enough to remember when the idea of making money off your online videos was considered deplorably vain. Now it's the primary goal of so many people starting to make content in the first place. People can make whatever kind of content they want, but TH-cam is getting to the point of taking their largest creators for granted to the point where they're starting to reject the abuse by leaving. Of course, TH-cam will just replace them instead of changing their business model, but I'm still holding out hope that someday there'll be something like Nebula, run by actual creators, but accessible to those of us who aren't already super famous.
This topic comes up every few years. Your favorite people are leaving. And for the children on this app you're just growing up and changing interests so the app as you knew it doesnt exist anymore. Ive been here since the beginning but i was already an adult. TH-cam has def changed but its not something i feel nostolgic about.
The fact that the search function on this site doesn't work. Or any of the filters for recent content on whatever you're searching, it's just the most popular stuff even if it's something 7 years old and of course has more views because it's older and something completely unrelated. The enshittification of it all.
I don't know what's deeper, the actual philosophy or using katamari ost to address hubris in capitalism. Have a sub lol Maybe we can get you flossing in times square eventually.
those guys spending all that money to make a tv show, hiring all that staff, reminds me of people i know who went to film school. i worked on this film doing sound and the director/writer was explaining to me they needed to make a river of blood for one scene but they were going to buy fake blood from spirit halloween and it was expensive. like wtf are they teaching you in film school? they also were worried about getting permits to film an indie film on a college campus. im like just film it, whats gonna happen? no one is even going to see this film let alone care.
This was a really good video, I really enjoyed it. If I could offer a little feedback, don't talk down about yourself and your intelligence. It's very obvious that you're very smart and making jokes about them can be fun for a while, but they still can get in your head. Please keep up the thoughtful and engaging work, you're making good stuff here 😊
I don't know if this is an indicator of anything, but recently I've noticed a shift in youtube's recommendations. I keep seeing more and more channels with only a couple of hundred views per video at best.
yeah i was reading an email from youtube the other day and this is a conscious shift, they're making a thing called a hype page next year trying to promote smaller and smaller channels which is cool i guess (until someone breaks the system)
I do also wonder if subscribing to a channel makes the algorithm worse.
try the Blocktube extension, you can block specific videos
I'm never on the homepage anymore, I'm extremely loyal to the subscription feed. nothing good anywhere else

Ratfish only required them renting about a dozen hotel rooms for two days at most.

FOPPISH (i don't know what that means but i will use it forever)
This is the way
Mr. Beast’s weird Lunchables/chocolate bar venture stuns me the most because immediately after I saw it out in the wild on a vacation my brain wondered if I fell into a wormhole and this was one of the signs that the universe wasn’t right.
Also, in an *ironic twist of events* you’re funny to me, a 30 year old woman who set up this TH-cam account around 2014-ish and never used it because fiddling with it was too hard.
hahahah thankyou that is nice of you to say
@@henryisdumb You’re welcome.
i recognize your pfp from cyberchase or something
Unfortunately, no wormhole required.
Wonderful pfp :3
Bo Burnham’s Inside was a beautiful punch to the gut. It really hit me emotionally. I wish you had talked about it a little more. I’m a TH-cam premium member because I got sick of the ads. Most of the channels I’m subscribed to have fewer than 500k followers, and the ones that have over 500k have modified their content to appease The Algorithm.
LOL, just realized I wasn’t subbed. At least the algorithm knows me enough to recommend your vids. Subbed now.
yeah i had a whole section about bo burnham and joji but i feel like it was getting too long of a video
@@henryisdumb Time for a part 2 😂
So at what point will TH-cam be considered "mainstream?" Is 122 million users a day not enough?
I'd argue TH-cam as a Platform is there, but TH-cam videos aren't.
This is why pay for premium 😂
the algorithm is advertising.
In before a streamer reacts to your whole video taking away all your views☠.

Are you dealing with Helene too? There's over a million people without power in my area (myself included). Hope you're doing okay!
Keep up the good work dude I enjoy your videos on par with Kurtis Conner and the like.
genuinely that's insanely kind of you to say, hope all is well with you
Ads, shorts, AI, big shots acting like children, drama, rage bait, politics. That's the problem.
You say those things like they're new. Politics and drama were like the first 2 things on YT.
dropping the banger that is the katamari soundtrack in the start of chapter 3... respect
at the end you PERFECTLY captured a thought that I've been entertaining for a while now - things will eventually circle back, no matter what
people who have been on this site long enough to see it fall will try to recapture what was so great about it, essentially stealing back the will to try and aim for true authenticity again (rather than falling into an algorithmic, capitalist-controlled daze, only watching what is presented and not putting thought behind how it was conceived - though i can hardly blame people for falling into it when it's literally pushed everywhere ;-;) I'd like to say that one day, after this extreme of user activity, moderation will eventually start to cement itself the more we realise the situation we're in
things like generative AI, "competition" between social media sites, and companies pushing for more and more and MORE will eventually come to a head and fall back down, no matter what (whether it be ugly or fuckn awesome) and this EXACT sentiment can be used for so many other factors of life as well
the push to see real people throw their own human ideas out there without a single push to simply, say, make more money or adhere to a certain formula, is something i look forward to seeing again (AND THANK YOU SIR FOR THIS INCREDIBLE VIDEO??? you did amazing so BE PROUD)
no worries, i'm glad i've put some words to that feeling! it's always cyclical, life will always revert when enough people make enough money from one thing and get bored, eventually mr beasts style will be new and fresh again sadly
thanks for the nice words though it is super kind to hear!
I’ve noticed there’s been a mass migration away from social media in general - perhaps people are finally taking the “touch grass” advice to heart
Well yeah, everything is bots and scams wanting yout money and clicks
WAIT, WHAT YOU ONLY HAVE 15K SUBS WHAT THE HELL, IT FEELS LIKE I'VE WATCHED YOUR CHANNEL INTERMITTENTLY FOR THE LAST TEN YEARS I'M TWEAKIN RAAAHHHH
i hope you haven’t, my videos ten years ago were atrocious hahahah
The ads have become so aggressive and long recently. If a video has a 30+ sec ad before it, I close the window and won't watch either. It's not worth it.
Super long on TV. Every 5 minutes, man. It’s so unwatchable at this point.
I kill the sound and look at my phone while I wait for it to end.
But for real, another banger video. This is already becoming my favorite video on TH-cam ABOUT TH-cam, and this just shows how good you are at all this.
hahahahahah i got so confused to start off with reading that i thought they sounded familiar
honestly thank you as usual for your kind words it means a lot!!
1. Being talented can be a curse.
2. There's too much duplication.
3. There's too many hats that creators need to wear.
Tthank you for this. You put a name to a feeling I've had for a while
no worries! i've been working through that too and this was the only way i could get it out of me hahah
Is the end implying that I am going to be dead ? Spoilers !
sorry i should've put a spoiler warning, my bad
Jetlag works as Nebula gives you that weeks priority before it is put on TH-cam, and unique stuff like Layover on top
Our atomization makes us crave recency even more because we want the sense of an ongoing conversation and you don't want to be the guy that's trying to push for a conversation about how you just watched Cyberpunk Edgerunners for the first time or something when everyone has already watched and discussed it.
yeah its fully a thing of once you've watched it who cares, then you move onto the next thing to fill the void
What's the song you used at 22:00 min for the transition?

it's lonely rolling star from katamari damacy, thanks for the incredibly kind words
A new Henry video, a new banger.
hahahah why thankyou, i'm glad you enjoyed it
TH-cam has taught me to be so cynical to the point I'm doing the Threat-Assessment Once-Over™ to _videos_ now. Like, you know how your SO will introduce you to a friend or ex, and you get one second to look them up and down, seeing what you can compliment them on / criticise about them if the need arises? That's me, but with _TH-cam videos._
Just this video as an example (apologies in advance!), the generic question title with the image/face/text format on the thumbnail made my teeth itch.
Thank you.
i completely get that train is thought, i imagine it'll only get worse with all the ai generated nonsense we will have pushed into our faces once people get more used to it's inner workings
it's difficult from this side too, like trying to be yourself but also understanding the need to show a part of you for people to want to watch, it's a big ol' conundrum
Cheers 🎉
1:30 in and I LOVE the Katamari music!
Still salty over the Watcher situation. The official subreddit is trying to prune any criticism over it, too lol. They really thought they could pull a Dropout but, they don't have the volume of interesting content like Dropout to really be worthy of a streamer. Also Travel Season is just... not very good. They don't even really discuss the food beyond "Mm" "Thats good" "Yeah thats real good"
Conundrum, what an excellent word. Love your diction, friend.
funny story, the top thing on my recommended videos below this one is the movie "Idiocracy." which is both an answer to the title of this video, and a relevant social commentary on modern youtube culture in general lmao.

That last line was so simple, so silly in terms of what it was referencing, but god damn did it pack a massive punch, props to you man, this is an incredibly well done video
genuinely thankyou, i'm glad you enjoyed it!

Just letting you know I really enjoyed your writing and presentation for this video ❤

hahahahah i'm glad someone appreciates that
as a big critical role fan It was kinda funny that they announced Beacon only a tiny while after the whole Watcher situation, but also just re-enforced my faith in their practices. They were not moving any shows exclusively to Beacon, and it's pricing was the exact same as their Twitch sub so it was presented more as a "switch the way you support us" rather then a desperate cry for help.
Thank you for being there, its good to know, that there are some sane people left on TH-cam.
And yes, Dropout knew exactly what they were doing and they continually add new shows and content. It's been by far the BEST money I've spent on a subscription ever

re: the beginning of the "intentions" section, i want to re-emphasize that even if a youtube channel already HAS editors, writers, cinematographers, etc as part of its production process, the biggest shift in stakeholder is still the fact that youtubers' executive producers are always, ALWAYS the viewers. even sponsorship money is brought in by viewership. yes, the move to mainstream media creates a new group of people relying on the creator for employment, but more importantly, it creates a new group of people directly giving the creator money

I watched the video on my magical box in the living room with my surround speakers and the subwoofer was making weird noises as if the bass is a few miliseconds behind the normal audio
wow super kind of you to say, oh weird i’ll look into it, ill watch this back tomorrow and see what’s happening for future stuff, thank you though!
@henryisdumb it's really minor, but I confirmed it's only with your video. I would say it sounds like there's a wineglass standing on top of the subwoofer, this is how it sounds like. A small, barely noticeable delay or vibration
i’m gunna guess it’s audacity being a dingus, it always de-syncs everything, thank you though i’ll look into this

oh my word you don't have to do that ahahh, that's so kind of you thankyou
@@henryisdumband you don't have to make awesome videos. Let's just keep doing our best.
hahahah i shall try to, until i eventually get bored and set up my own streaming service
That was honestly the most haunting last line to a video I have even heard...

Really good video. One question, who did you edit for?
most people i edited for weren’t youtubers i’ve done a lot of stuff in the big wide world
This topic comes up every few years.

The enshittification of it all.
this was strangely uplifting

I don't know if this is an indicator of anything, but recently I've noticed a shift in youtube's recommendations. I keep seeing more and more channels with only a couple of hundred views per video at best.
yeah i was reading an email from youtube the other day and this is a conscious shift, they're making a thing called a hype page next year trying to promote smaller and smaller channels which is cool i guess (until someone breaks the system)
