2022 Nissan Titan XD, or should it have been HD? I'll explain my theory on where Nissan made mistake

  • 2022 Nissan Titan XD could have made an important Heavy Duty. It already has 10 ply tires, heavy duty frame for NV vans, recirculating ball steering, gooseneck factory bed ball option, towing mirrors and integrated trailer brake controller. I like the XD, miss the V-8 Cummins. It handles trailers like an HD and almost rides as rough as HD. If Nissan would have put a full floating rear axle in the XD and just a few more tweaks, it could have competed with just 3 brands instead of four 1/2 ton brands. I'm not saying it should tow 30K , but it could tow 16k where most of the HD trucks really work. My review truck was the Platinum Reserve 4x4 only in a crew cab. It was nice, nice wood trim, nice black and brown interior, more than nice leather seats. I enjoyed the truck, felt confident with a trailer. #MrTruckIzzyReview #trailering #MrTruckReview mrtrailer.com/springs.htm

    Thanks Mr. Truck for another great video. Love the Titan XD - not the best on fuel in it's class but in my experience these are well built, better than the big three. Had a 2001 Pathfinder that made it over 400,000km without significant issues. Too bad they cancelled this truck in Canada for 2021 onward.

    I really do like the Titans and I think they are underrated for sure. The main issue I have is the fuel capacity. They need to have a larger tank. Don't know what Nissan is thinking putting a 26 gallon tank in the XD.

    Love my ‘19 XD but Nissan failed to market this truck. I can’t recall a Titan commercial for this gen and didn’t even know about the XD until I took my daughter’s car to the dealership (just happened to pickup a brochure).

    Even though some half tons are rated to tow more, they will not do it with the same stability and confidence as the XD. Its heavier and handles the weight better. So if you're towing heavier more often this will handle it better tham a half ton due the the stronger frame snd components.

    • @MrTruckTV

      @@MrTruckTV me too. I really think they can safely tow and haul more than theyre rated for, especially considering the frame. It seems pointless to add all of that weight of a heavy duty frame, suspension and drivetrain components only to be rated less than many half tons. Only real benefit is the stability without the rough ride of a 3/4 ton. I would have liked to see more towing and hauling capacities. My platinum reserve with the Cummins weighs as much as and more than some 3/4 tons.

    I agree with everything you said. upgrade the rear axle. go 8 lug. class 5 hitch. The front end has seemed plenty beefy enough for my Titanxd at 4900lbs and has plowed with a 800 pound plow on the front end for 3 years with zero issues. once they do these simple improvements and really dig in they should start to make some headway. But they absolutely need to bring back the single cab 8 foot bed and king cab 8 foot bed added for work trucks if they want to sell a lot of units. One other thing they did that drove me crazy was the S trim level titan XD didn't even come with a trailer hitch. What a silly mistake that was.

    That’s a very nice premium level truck by Nissan (typically very good Japanese design & build quality) being a middling between a real 3/4 ton and a regular 1/2 ton. I’d seriously consider this truck, however, I’ve also read the poor sales numbers and how it’s discontinued for sale in Canada because of just that alone. I’d like to mention how I love their in-the-box storage, yet this truck requires premium fuel 😳. By comparison after pricing one of these out, my 6.6L gas Chevy 2500 at a comparative model level (Pro4X vs LTZ with Z71 or an SV vs LT), costs nearly identical and doesn’t need premium fuel. I also like that I have more torque, and my frame, etc. etc., is built for far more … payload (+3000), travel trailer capacity (+14,000). I haven’t seen anyone review an option I bought from GM, which is my side-mounted bed storage box (similar to what this Titan has), and love it as it keeps a 4ft. width floor and full bed length (+81”L in GM/Chevy HD). Detailed review, thank you!

    • @MrTruckTV

      @@MrTruckTV Hi there Kent. I’ve enjoyed many of your videos and those with the guys at TFL…. I’m glad my 6.6L gas engine only requires regular 89 octane to achieve the claimed ratings. If it helps you think of another episode to consider = yes the side mounted bed storage box kit (come as a pair, one for each side) is made by GM. Simply type exactly what I wrote as that is its correct long winded name. I could send you a photo of how mine (loaded with tools & straps/ropes and auto cleaning gear and emergency gear = love it!) Another item overlooked that I recently realized is likely an Oil Catch Can (mine is Mishimoto but I saw J&L has one too). I just purchased and installed it to mitigate aerosols from building behind the intake valves. I remember your interview with Mike Koceba at the Flint, MI plant who seemed to indicate that they have some technology in place during that torturous path of piston bypass fluids to catch most of those liquid aerosols. After watching a few videos from others on this, I know it’s an investment to less maintenance prevention. Take care Mr. Truck (Kent) 👍🏼. Gotta get back to watching our Oilers play tonight. Robert from Edmonton (Alberta).

    • @nhlcfl7733
      @nhlcfl7733 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrTruckTV if it interests you, feel free to ask me a question related to oil refining as I’ve consulted to them for +20 years now, regarding filtering their fluids in their process plants when making diesel, gasoline and other commodities. One reason I chose a gasoline over diesel is because I only haul a Toy Hauler travel trailer and needed a truck that meets its tongue weight. My experience with refinery engineers has to do with their challenge to make diesel at the proper cleanliness spec. and cloud point (depending the ambient temperature of where it will be sold to). Gasoline is much cleaner and although there are more steps in the processing, it so much cleaner that engines can expect less issue when they buy it at a fuel station. Although my fuel mileage won’t match a diesel, but as I’ve calculated, that $10K purchase difference will take years before the diesel takes the lead from me, not including their typically higher oil change and other plausible maintenance issues. But Chevy/GM could do something simple to make their HD series more comfortable = soften / improve your seats because they are dam hard (I could drive for many hours in my previous Ram truck without noticing discomfort). That’s my two bits. Robert.

    Yeah, the rear axle bothers me. Nissan took a 9.5" - 14 bolt AAM semi float housing and had AAM design a 250MM R&P. The result? Something that you will never find custom gear ratios for. I wish I could swap a 9.5" carrier in and have tons of ratios. Or better yet, why didn't they use the 10.5" -14 bolt full float? Also, 6 studs? Why? The NV has 8. Kinda fits in with the whole, don't confuse us with a real HD truck. OK the diesel is gone. I get it. It wasn't great, it chugged DEF like beer at a college party and nearly as heavy as the 5.9 - 6 cylinder that makes tons more power. Why not punch out the 5.6 to a 6.2 for the XD? To me it is obvious Nissan was not serious about this truck. It appears they did not do their research and talk to actual HD truck owners and listened to what they wanted. The NV is gone and from what Nissan is saying, the Titan will be dead soon as well.
    How would I have built this truck? 10.5 full float rear. 9.25 solid axle front. Bring back the 5.9 - 6 Cummins and update that to modern emissions. Or punch out the 5.6 to 6.2 for the gas lovers. Offer a 6 speed manual or the Aisin Trans. 8 stud hubs, of course. Keep everything else the same!

      I'm with you, they do need to talk to more truck owners

    • @dave3682
      @dave3682 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The only reason the XD exists is BECAUSE Nissan did their research. They looked at the market and saw that every year 75,000 people graduate from a half-ton to a 3/4-ton, but, at the same time, 75,000 people go from a 3/4-ton to a half-ton. That's 150,000 people every year that can't find a truck that's right for them. Nissan wanted to tap into that market with a tweener truck with the towing capacity of a half-ton and the towing confidence of a 3/4-ton.
      The XD is a failure because of the badge on the grille. If Ford, GM, or Ram had made the XD it would sell in better numbers. Again, the market research proves that there is a need for a truck like the Titan XD, but this is also a market with a buyer base that is hostile to large Japanese trucks.
