    Don’t care if its towing capacity is only 9200 pounds compared to 11,000. Honestly if you are towing over 8,000 on a regular basis you should have a 2500 series truck.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      D Hogg what frequency would you start to lean 1/2 ton then?

    • @dahayes213
      @dahayes213 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Alan Bowers I would say anything above 5k I would go to full size 1/2 ton. Midsize are fine up to 5k. To compare a Colorado with 7k to a ranger with 7500 is pointless because I wouldn’t. tow that much with either of them.

    • @plmn93
      @plmn93 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Agree, but "regular basis" is the key word there. Most 1/2 ton owners only tow occasionally, and for them that extra capacity can matter.

      @upshifter5316 4 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      The Titan’s tow rating is a non-issue. Most higher trim crew cab 4x4 half tons are rated between 9k-10k lbs.
      The 12k+ ratings on commercials are only available on lower trims and/or smaller cabs and/or 4x2 and/or special order packages you’d never find on a dealer lot.
      My 15 F150 crew 4x4 with Max Tow (not just regular tow package) and 3.5 is only rated for 9600 lbs, and that is pretty much the same as Titan in the real world.
      In the half ton world, everyone seems to gravitate toward the tow rating when payload is actually the most important rating, because it is the most commonly breached rating, and its the payload that is truly this Titan’s Achilles’ Heel.
      So the same tow rating (pretty much) as my F150, but very different payload ratings - 1300 lbs payload for the Titan vs 1700 for my F150.
      A 400 lbs difference doesn’t sound like much until you think about this: With only a 200lb driver, both trucks can tow about the same. To wit: Deduct the driver from Titans payload and you’re left with 1,100lbs capacity for hitch tongue weight. Assuming a standard 12% tongue weight backs you into a max trailer weight of 9,166 lbs; under Titan Tmax - already lower than the Titan’s advertised max (perhaps Nissan is assuming the use case of a horse jockey shuttling his own horses to and fro?).
      But say I take my family with me, like I might if I were going camping, and the story changes dramatically.
      With the 4 of us tallying about 420 lbs, Titan leaves me only 880 lbs. A 12% tongue weight backs me into a maximum trailer weight of 7,300lbs. Start adding cargo in the truck and that figure starts dropping even more, fast.
      Compare to my F150, which would leave me with a 1,280 lbs payload after my family piles in (which is about the same as the Titan’s to begin with), and I can still tow up to 10,600lbs assuming the same 12% hitch weight (not that I ever would but the “headroom” is nice).
      I have no doubt that in the real world both trucks will tow dang near equally well (towing is about way more than power to pull). But DOT and highway patrol will run the numbers just as I’ve shown above, and if you are over the payload limit, you are busted - even if you say “but officer, I’m well below my tow limit!”
      It’s not just Nissan that is guilty of this diversion tactic, either. Think about the 4th gen Rams, where crew cab v8 4x4s carried a payload rating of 900-1,000 lbs max. Same assumptions as above mean that with your family along, you could be limited to a 4,000 lbs trailer max! Yet Ram catalogs for that generation still stated a towing capacity around 9,500 lbs in that trim. Wow!!
      This is where it’s time to get real. If you went by the numbers alone, this suggests you’d be better off towing the family and camper with a mid-size than a 4th gen Ram full size. Substitute the Colorado’s 1,378 payload in Crew Cab 4x4 guise, for example, and you are much more compliant with the numbers in this scenario than with the Ram. Nuts, right?
      So yes, Nisssn really did handicap their Titan’s ratings. But not the way people think. The tow rating is just fine, but the payload lets down the whole equation. I suspect they did this to preserve sales of the XD and provide self-validation for the XDs business case.
      That said this is all just a keyboard comparison of the stats. In my case if I had the funds I’d trade my F150 on a new Titan in a heartbeat. Stats are just part of the equation, and I value the whole package, and would never tow more than 6500lbs with my family on board anyway, so it works for me.
      Each person should do their diligence to determine what works for them, but the manufacturers and regulators (and media) obfuscate the details so that it’s too confusing for the average person, and many just end up relying on anecdotal information from sales people and advertising.
      If you read this far I am grateful for your time and hope it had been helpful. That said, I suspect most folks watching this are gear head types and already know this, while the folks that need the info most may never see it. Oh well, we tried.
      Have a great day!!
      Edit: corrected some wording.

    I have a 2018 Titan XD Pro4X and it's fantastic---I tow a 34 foot Keystone Outback rated at 8,500 lbs when fully loaded with gear and water in the tank. Why did I buy the Titan XD? Price. MSRP was $53,000 and I got it out the door for $39,000, basically just shy of 25% off MSRP. Another big reason to consider the Titan: the 5-year, 100,000 bumper-to-bumper warranty.

      @@evandickson19 I agree that 10,000 is enough for a half ton, for most people anyway. Problem with the Tundra is that its payload is so low that you'll never get close to its max towing in the real world. Generally speaking, a truck built to handle 13K is going to handle 9K better than a truck rated for 9K. But yeah, 13K F-150s are unicorns built for marketing purposes. I'm pretty sure most aren't even rated for 10K. But the thing with F-150s is that once you step up from the 2.7 it's pretty easy to get enough payload to tow near its limit. So many trucks these days have pathetic payloads that will keep you from hitting their towing limits in the real world where you have passengers and cargo.

    These are so underrated. That said, Nissan should add the 4WD auto capability mode Ram has in the 1500's. Sometimes drivers want the added safety of 4WD auto up here in the midwest snow belt. 4WD auto only kicks in when you need it and puts less wear on the 4WD high gearing such as you will do in a Titan. In 4WD auto you can hit highway speeds with no problem. The Titan max speed in 4WD high is 62 MPH.

    i am a fan of Nissan. I have owned several Nissan Cars and all have been great vehicles. I have tried to be a Nissan Titan fan but can't seem to get there. The price of the Titan XD with the Cummings diesel was north the F-250 with a Power Stroke. The Powerstroke dwarfed the 5.0 Titan Diesel in power, towing and payload.
    Granted, the test truck has all the bells & whistles but it is overpriced IMO. For similar money, you can have a F-250 XLT with premium package and Godzilla 7.3 V8 muscle. The 6.2 and 7.3 F-250 gas out perform all on regular fuel. Still, I love the look and I am cheering for Nissan to kill it with their full size truck on of these days. For some reason, they just cannot capture market share.
    Nice video Andre

    Ya know, I just did some research. That tow rating is actually really good. I have a 4X4 RAM 1500 crew cab short bed, it has a 8,300 lb tow rating. That Titan Pro 4X King cab or Crew cab has a 9,200 lb tow rating.

    • @thechiefenginer
      @thechiefenginer 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The "actual" towing ability of trucks is fascinating. Everyone bases tow rating off of what they hear on TV, or where ever. F150 states towing up to 13-14k lbs. HOWEVER, that is only on a very specific model. They model that is a long box, standard cab, no 4 wheel drive.
      The model that everyone gets with crew cab, short box, 4x4, massaging seat, etc.... is more like 11k at best. My titan XD is 11k towing, but i guarantee that it will handle that 11k so much better than the f150. I'll trade slower acceleration any day for better stability.

They even gave me $26,000 for my 2017 GMC Canyon Crew Cab SLT after they offered me $22,000. It was the deal of the century and they are desperate. I did it all over the phone. I also put zero down. They delivered it, signed the contract and they drove away with my old truck. Easiest deal ever. It literally took 20 minutes for me to have the truck and they took off. No way you are getting $20,000 off this overpriced Nissan btw but you could get a really good deal if you act like you are not interested. They lowered it, lowered it basically to match the same payment I had with the Canyon. It was comical.

    Titan is very tempting due to standard 'good engine' instead of penalty box base engine in other trucks. You can get some good deals - much better than GM, which I've given up on. BTW, not to harp on this but TOW/HAUL is important on highway driving because it prevents torque converter lockup so that the clutch doesn't burn out - that was its original reason for being.

The only thing worse than that is not having a seat that will at least lower you to a reasonable height. The Tacoma is the same flipped way.

Before saying that this is off-road, my ZR2 -- a midsize, purpose-built for heady-duty off-roading -- has the factory payload of 1240 lbs. Compare that with another 1/2 ton off-roader, Trail Boss with the payload of around 1640, and I would have to pass on this truck unfortunately.
