I like the way she speaks ; ambassador to music and the genre of opera singing and the opera “circuit” and the bell canto tradition specifically. She always did that. She paid respects to the Institutions and her teachers and her colleagues and spoke about the “work”. Beyond the glamour she wanted to be integrated in the long tradition of lyrical singing as one historical part of it. Just that. Because the media was all over her she put opera in the headlines and that was so good. The best, l think, and it was good coming from her, as she was some sort of an immigrant, she was not native Italian or French or German.

Entretien fort intéressant. J'avais 9 ans lorsque j'ai découvert Maria Callas. Je vivais à l'époque en Afrique de l'Est et un dimanche matin, un concert de Maria Callas était donné à Radio France Internationale, elle interprétait un air de Nabucco. Je suis restée totalement subjuguée et émue par cette voix. Maria Callas m'a fait aimer l'opéra. J'ai maintenant 73 ans et je l'écoute très souvent. J'éprouve une immense tristesse de savoir qu'elle est partie dans une totale solitude, elle travailleuse acharnée qui avait tout donné à son art et l'homme qu'elle a aimé. La Callas la mal aimée par sa mère et l'homme qu'elle adorait restera à jamais la Diva Assoluta. Elle nous laisse en héritage tous ces magnifiques enregistrements.

Son d'accordo su tutto a parte il capitolo Meneghini. Senza di lui MOLTO probabilmente Maria non sarebbe diventata la CALLAS. E anche lei sicuramente lo ha "usato" e non ci ha pensato neanche due minuti per fargli le corna sotto lo stesso tetto (vabbè, il tetto di un enorme yacht da crociera..) e lasciarlo. ENORME talento e sensibilità si, ma certamente non un angioletto...
Spregiudicata e interessata,come una Lady,negli anni scaligeri molti si chiedevano come potesse stare con Meneghini-cui viene attribuita la scoperta della Ricciarelli- ma a parte un episodio raccontato dalla Falk aveva una civetteria teatrale e monogamica.

And not only the supply side=the operatic industry, but looking also the demand side=the consumers, the listeners, the viewers from opera lirica. What a huge difference. What happened in these 50 years on the stage and at the publicum? If somebody of opera enthusiatics analysed this, I would be very content to hear about. She had hundreds and more to choose from, they were all around her, but her heart wanted Aristo knowing full well all about him, the oldest story. He couldn't give her what she needed,both died early and unhappy, in spite of the talent and riches.
Such a beautiful woman, with strong and intense facial features. Here she remains a very attractive woman of her age, who has preserved her unique beauty and aged gracefully. Today everybody’s looking the same with all that work done to prevent…the inevitable.
Callas forever! I am Italian and Callas not only speaks Very Well but tells Very Intelligent and interesting things . I think she had the PERFECT ear and memory , so that she could pronounce perfectly ( nor only when singing ) and memorise words and terms in an Amazing way
At this stage of her life (one and a half year before she passed), her Italian was a bit rusty. She always did some mistakes when speaking Italian even in the 50s when she used to live there. She had a strong Veronese accent which she most probably got from her husband and from living in Verona the first 7 years of her Italian life. When singing, more than perfect pronunciation, she had the ability of sculpting words, better than most Italian sopranos. And doing that being a Greek American woman!

Maria spoke 4 languages and never got confused. What I feel about this amazing woman is that she was far to intellegent for Aristotle Onnassis, he used her, but he married Jackie Kennedy only because she was rich famous and had connections in the government. His first wife Tina was from a rich family too. Also with connections. Aristotle could never have married Maria she was not powerful enough. His goal was to get richer and have more power. Maria sadly could not do it for him.
Incredibly interesting as a documentary. However she complains and deplores but although she was a great singer there have been many others ever since. Life goes on, art lives forever. Opera and music is larger than anyone's life. Ars longa, vita brevis.

@@Dario-mn4uc Beh ma anche li non credo proprio si possa parlare di ottusità o insensibilità quando le si fanno critiche. Nonostante la sua ENORME grandezza la Callas aveva qualche limite tecnico nella sua formazione vocale, anche nel periodo "sano" 1949-1953. Parlo proprio dell'approccio come "impostazione" della voce, non della sua tecnica belcantista assolutamente ineccepibile. Tali limiti insieme a una scelta di repertorio alquanto suicida e alla famigerata dieta dimagrante l'han portata ad avere una voce "sana" per un periodo davvero breve. A 31/32 anni già iniziava appena percettibile ma presente un progressivo declino vocale. Che poi abbia fatto cose stupende anche negli anni del declino e che il suo repertorio "suicida" ci abbia regalato testimonianze sonore indimenticabili è un'altra storia. Ma la voce di per se della Callas non era impostata perfettamente. A quelli cui il suo timbro non piace (e diciamocelo: può non piacere!) queste pecche rappresentano elementi per criticarla perchè la sua voce non rispecchia un senso edonistico che le loro orecchie vogliono sempre sentire. Per noi che l'amiamo questi limiti passano in secondo piano, ma non credo che la ragione sia perchè gli altri sono ottusi e insensibili e noi no...
@@stefanodepeppo Quelli che l' avversavano non usavano linguaggi così "morbidi" , ma la detestavano in maniera assoluta e basta, del resto erano gli anni delle grandi sfide come la rivalità Coppi- Bartali, così vi era anche a livello artistico tra la "divina" e la Tebaldi. Ed il pubblico certo non si risparmiava, ma si lasciava andare in autentiche ondate di odio da una parte e di amore incondizionato dall' altra. Per questo ho detto che vi era dell' ottusità e mancanza di sensibilità, oltre che di rispetto, proprio per via di quell' antipatia indomabile e per niente democratica di una parte del pubblico, che ripeto la detestava al punto da arrivare ad offenderla . In quanto al declino non si può fargliene una colpa, recentemente è emerso che soffriva di una malattia particolare ( dermatomiosi ) che colpisce tutti i muscoli del corpo, perciò anche i muscoli della fonazione, nonché il cuore, e lei dunque non morì d'amore, ma per gli effetti disastrosi di questo male che ha insidiato la sua vita per parecchi anni. Riguardo alla voce che può piacere o no, in ultima analisi è questione di gusto personale, a me piace proprio quel timbro "scuro" da soprano drammatico, si accorda appunto alla mia sensibilità, non posso quindi comprendere quelli a cui non piace.

and after 50 years, it would be very interesting to compare what Maria Callas told about the giovani, and where we are staying now in the opera lirica stage. After two generations of singers. And not only the supply side=the operatic industry, but looking also the demand side=the consumers, the listeners, the viewers from opera lirica.
What a huge difference. What happened in these 50 years on the stage and at the publicum?

Callas forever! I am Italian and Callas not only speaks Very Well but tells Very Intelligent and interesting things . I think she had the PERFECT ear and memory , so that she could pronounce perfectly ( nor only when singing ) and memorise words and terms in an Amazing way
At this stage of her life (one and a half year before she passed), her Italian was a bit rusty. She always did some mistakes when speaking Italian even in the 50s when she used to live there. She had a strong Veronese accent which she most probably got from her husband and from living in Verona the first 7 years of her Italian life.
When singing, more than perfect pronunciation, she had the ability of sculpting words, better than most Italian sopranos. And doing that being a Greek American woman!

Maria spoke 4 languages and never got confused. What I feel about this amazing woman is that she was far to intellegent for Aristotle Onnassis, he used her, but he married Jackie Kennedy only because she was rich famous and had connections in the government. His first wife Tina was from a rich family too. Also with connections. Aristotle could never have married Maria she was not powerful enough. His goal was to get richer and have more power. Maria sadly could not do it for him.

Incredibly interesting as a documentary. However she complains and deplores but although she was a great singer there have been many others ever since. Life goes on, art lives forever. Opera and music is larger than anyone's life. Ars longa, vita brevis.
Of course there have been many great singers after her, some fabulous. Great Artists after her? VERY few...
Cantatrice merveilleuse, très intelligente et compétente, mais très excessive dans son travail de chant, car chanter à fond, fatigue énormément le cœur ! ! elle n'a pas su se mettre des limites et a reproché aux autres artistes de ne pas travailler comme elle ! elle reste unique ! partie trop tôt...... ! merci Maria, RIP

@@stefanodepeppo Evidentemente non mi sono spiegato bene, io mi riferivo a delle critiche tecniche non sul timbro vocale, che ovviamente non può piacere a tutti.
@@Dario-mn4uc Beh ma anche li non credo proprio si possa parlare di ottusità o insensibilità quando le si fanno critiche. Nonostante la sua ENORME grandezza la Callas aveva qualche limite tecnico nella sua formazione vocale, anche nel periodo "sano" 1949-1953. Parlo proprio dell'approccio come "impostazione" della voce, non della sua tecnica belcantista assolutamente ineccepibile. Tali limiti insieme a una scelta di repertorio alquanto suicida e alla famigerata dieta dimagrante l'han portata ad avere una voce "sana" per un periodo davvero breve. A 31/32 anni già iniziava appena percettibile ma presente un progressivo declino vocale. Che poi abbia fatto cose stupende anche negli anni del declino e che il suo repertorio "suicida" ci abbia regalato testimonianze sonore indimenticabili è un'altra storia. Ma la voce di per se della Callas non era impostata perfettamente. A quelli cui il suo timbro non piace (e diciamocelo: può non piacere!) queste pecche rappresentano elementi per criticarla perchè la sua voce non rispecchia un senso edonistico che le loro orecchie vogliono sempre sentire. Per noi che l'amiamo questi limiti passano in secondo piano, ma non credo che la ragione sia perchè gli altri sono ottusi e insensibili e noi no...
@@stefanodepeppo Quelli che l' avversavano non usavano linguaggi così "morbidi" , ma la detestavano in maniera assoluta e basta, del resto erano gli anni delle grandi sfide come la rivalità Coppi- Bartali, così vi era anche a livello artistico tra la "divina" e la Tebaldi. Ed il pubblico certo non si risparmiava, ma si lasciava andare in autentiche ondate di odio da una parte e di amore incondizionato dall' altra. Per questo ho detto che vi era dell' ottusità e mancanza di sensibilità, oltre che di rispetto, proprio per via di quell' antipatia indomabile e per niente democratica di una parte del pubblico, che ripeto la detestava al punto da arrivare ad offenderla . In quanto al declino non si può fargliene una colpa, recentemente è emerso che soffriva di una malattia particolare ( dermatomiosi ) che colpisce tutti i muscoli del corpo, perciò anche i muscoli della fonazione, nonché il cuore, e lei dunque non morì d'amore, ma per gli effetti disastrosi di questo male che ha insidiato la sua vita per parecchi anni. Riguardo alla voce che può piacere o no, in ultima analisi è questione di gusto personale, a me piace proprio quel timbro "scuro" da soprano drammatico, si accorda appunto alla mia sensibilità, non posso quindi comprendere quelli a cui non piace.
