For a long time I thought “Kenya Barris” was a woman. When I found he was a man I was shook. He is doing it big. His name is attached to some great shows

Ask him about his erasure of unambiguous and dark skinned Black people on his “Black” shows.

I just finished #blackAF and after reading the other comments, I definitely see his absence of darker tones in his shows. Blackish is a an exception with Marsai, but he mainly makes lighter hues the leads. It definitely seems to be done on purpose. What is that about?

The is a reflection of his real family. The show is based on his real family. Google his real family.

      L. Milton no one cares if it’s BaSEd oFF hIS FamILY. The reality is that the industry is much more likely to greenlight “Black” characters/shows as long as they are biracial, lightskin, or white passing. That’s what everyone is mad about.

but in blackish the 4 darkest people on the show are given negative character traits. the daughter and the grandma are seen as evil and bitter. the coworker charlie is seen as incredibly stupid and probably missing brain cells. and the friend Shaw is seen as a broke artist who sleeps on peoples couches because he can’t afford a home

Issa he gave you an open invitation to ask him about anything and you didn't ask about the CONSISTENT colorism on his shows? The replacement of dark-skinned actors/actresses, who seem to only last for promo pilots, with their lighter hue counterparts?

I'm going to start boycotting Kenya because he doesn't represent black people in a realistic and diverse way. I love Issa Rae tho love that shes making a way for herself and its beautiful on how she depicts her people.

Okay, can someone explain the ire being thrown his way? Is it just the skin colors or the content and context of the characters he writes about as well? Are lighter skin AA's Black? Are "mixed" AA's Black? Does "Black" have to do ONLY with skin color - or MOSTLY with skin color? Isn't Blackness mostly an enigmatic, multifaceted, political, social, cultural, ethnic identity claimed by us from the "whites", that we're redefining? All of these terms are fucking crazy and divisive. Imho We're so traumatized that we're doing racism to ourselves. Do "light skin", "biracial", or "mixed" people really think they're BETTER somehow, because they are closer to whiteness??? Fr? How sad - if true (even if they believe it subconsciously). Are darker skin people insecure? If so, why? Are we ONE...or do we need to officially split and come up with like new intra-black categories on the Census 😅...how? Race and racism is performed by all but controlled by the whites; this infighting weakens us on so many levels. Perhaps Barris can't write or cast the way some of us need because someone else has to occupy that space, showing and telling those other necessary stories. Maybe I don't get it. ✊🏾🖖🏾

In the year 2020, there is no excuse for every single wealthy black man and woman. Not to find a way to reach back, educate, INFORM their our people with the knowledge (secrets?) which for far too long could have uplifted OUR ON PEOPLE! Most, culture's, races, religion's etc, have some kind of loyalty for their own. I had to stop watching this (show) after pushing myself to watch up until the second episode. Watching the kids call the dad a dick. Watching the dad ramble on about his (frustration?) with managing what? , Being rich and black? Btw, his kids called him a dick. I believe Kenya, isn't satisfied with the success of his shows. He wants to be seen.!
