Tuning Water/Meth with Speed Density

  • I was going to call it, "Water Methanol Injection EFI tuning with Speed Density at the 26th Annual DSM EVO GT-R Shootout", but it's too long. Don't worry... I only talk for the first half of this. I even shut up for a whole minute in at least 4 different places. I'm getting better. Wink wink.
    I want to rant and rave and promote the living daylights out of the 26th annual DSM EVO GTR shootout, but the reality of it is I brought a car, 3 cameras, 2 laptops, a truck full of tools, a campsite and spent time poring over logs while hanging out with friends and fans in person. It was nice to be able to produce content while simultaneously vacationing. I can't think of a better place I'd ever get a chance to do that? My help were volunteers and it was everything we could do to ensure the meat of this material got captured and still soak in everything else & have a good time. There were 4 people from 4 states in one state and one person traveling through 3 states who were working on my tune during the shootout. If that sounds complicated, it was, but a blast was still had by all. If I didn't have those volunteers helping out, there's no way I would even have half the footage that I do. Thank you Chad! You're always welcome on my pit crew!
    Tom Tharpe took a time out from all the live-streaming and all the hoards of screaming fans to interrupt me in the pits of my tuning hell. He was driving a tiny powerful 5-valve turbo 3 cylinder car that he drove to the shootout. He let me drive the Dangan ZZ and his whole journey in it is documented. I got to make a cameo driving it. I needed that break! It is well documented in both my logs and my timeslips-that was the moment the Hyundai's luck began to change. Thank you Tom! You got to make a shootout video about something fun! Lesson learned for me!
    Watch the whole video here: • The Micro Mitsu Road T...
    The fans, the food, the festivities, the fireworks, the fun, it's all amazing. It's sensory overload! I can't wear a body cam, someone would be in jail. We all worked hard to get 6 runs, 6 logs and include the shootout into this topic. The animations were exhausting, but this is an inside look at what my tuning process took from point A to point B after installing water methanol injection. Explained. Of course completing this topic required additional efforts beyond the shootout, and all of that footage and data is included.
    The material is pretty thick. Especially if you are unfamiliar with ECMlink, but I do my best to explain it all. With examples. 9 runs of cause & effect. Some of them are pretty bad, but I make up for it. If you use Speed Density to tune some other boosted thing with water methanol injection, the principles here are all the same because your fuel is still calculated by pressure and RPMs, so you have a VE table similar to this on whatever it is you have. This covers in EXTREME detail how I adapted my ECU to work together-yet independently from the water methanol kit because of its failsafe and some creative wiring. If you want to know more about water methanol injection that made this possible, please watch my installation video and read the description. If you'd rather read this description, well okay then... keep going...
    Water/Methanol is a fuel charge that becomes part of your AFR's. It makes you rich. You have to lean out your gasoline mixture when you use a water methanol kit for two reasons. 1) because water vapor displaces some of the air, making your normal tune slightly rich, AND 2) methanol is fuel, making you slightly richer-er. The non-combustible nature of water slows the burn as it converts to steam, raising your final compression and your octane rating. Intake temperatures are spectacular so the air you DO ingest is very dense. And cold. If you can lean out your fuel mixture correctly, just on the verge of knocking... there is a lot of power to be found. You'll find that knock threshold has been moved. You'll find you can get away with just a little bit more. But If you don't take any fuel out, there is literally no benefit to installing water methanol injection. It will actually slow you down.
    YES! I made a lot of mistakes along the way. Sometimes that's how you find problems. I got help. Plus I'm going to show you my mistakes, examine other approaches and ultimately demonstrate what works best. I understand the OpenLoopMaxOctane table a whole lot better today. That's why I waited until now to explain it.
    No seriously... there were multiple reasons why it took this long to comb through 987.7 GB of footage to only use 771.67 GB of it to bring you a video that's less than an hour. But by the middle of the video you're watching results happen from getting it right. I didn't break records at the shootout other than a faster pass than I ran at last year's shootout... but I did break some all-time records and they're here in this video, too!

    I think this videos first appeared on my feed back when you first released it. I've had meth injection on my car since 2017.
    Just now in 2023 I'm playing with self tuning so this is really great to watch again.
    With the level of understanding you have and the amount of time you put into this you deserve to smash all your goals. I'm going to have to watch more of your videos and find out how you did.
    Just as I had a base tune (I thought) for my car a wheel speed sensor went out. I think it's the last of the 4 that I haven't yet replaced. I also triggered transmission errors which I'm hoping are simply a result of invalid figures causing out of range results and not hardware. Replacement sensor arrives Monday. Right after my weekend is over. Oh well!

      Have I been awake for a whole hour now? As these electrical issues get sorted, the fog of them lifts, and its real problems only become more clear. It still has issues. If you scrub through my logs, notice how my AFRest value jumps around. There's still noise in there from _something_. Oh what I would do to get a clean log from start to finish. In other news, there's a box on my living room floor with a brand new 1992 Hyundai Elantra speedometer cable in it. Unbelievably I found everything. It must be identical to half of everything with a 4g63 in it or something, because I had no trouble getting it.

      I have the same philosophy with raising children. Not that I have any children. But if you don't talk to children like children, they won't behave that way. Nobody baby talked me or spared punishments, I asked questions when I didn't know and they got answered. I believe I developed faster than my peers as a result of that. So through my examples, I learned to make my videos for my equals. I feel like glazing over general descriptions of upgrades is equivalent to talking down to people. I believe wrenching at 1x is tedious and condescending because everyone [even primates] know how wrenches and screwdrivers work. If the videos keep my attention, they'll keep your attention. And as for the material?... if I can do it, you can do it, anyone can do it. Just add positive reenforcement and make sure you're having fun! :)

Sadly, I know this is one of the things that I must do in this lifetime, and based off of their reactions, they're making me believe it will be the automotive job that could end my patience for the hobby. It takes a special kind of gear head to love a car that much. The hours... It's just such a commitment to do it. You've learned a ton from this, don't question it.

    Yo Jafro, Thanks for helping me diagnose my strange MPI relay issue that caused my car to not make the trip to the shootout this year. I finally got it sorted out (it ended up being a corroded terminal on the MPI fuse in my battery relocation). Long story short, I got the car fixed and got it into the 10's in full street trim (minus an air pressure adjustment).
    Thanks again!

      Also,
      The speedometer cable wont fix the speed sensor issue... it is simply the jank reed switch signal provided to the ecu that comes from the actual gauge cluster. this is just the nature of that sensor. My 1g does the same thing. A 2g sensor won't do that, but it also wont drive the OEM speedometer, as it is cable driven (which you knew). You'd have to either:
      A. Live with a non-functioning oem speedometer, odometer, and trip odometer... or
      B. Install an aftermarket speedometer that works with the 2g sensor (I believe AutoMeter has these)

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@talontsi92 I suspected that this would be the case. I've always known they were cable driven, but honestly I've never looked closely at the cluster side. Is that sensor just a mechanical switch? Is it a hall effect sensor? How does that interface mechanically? I bought all 3 parts, the cable, the cup and the seal. The parts I'm replacing are between 27-29 years old. I hear a whine in the dash that's always annoyed me. For several years I've suspected that cable may be dry rotted on the inside. I'm also pretty sure the cable seal's shot because I got gear oil on me once from working inside the dash. The smell is unmistakable. But we'll see if the new cable makes any difference? The good news is that it probably needs to be replaced anyway if it's siphoning oil up into my dashboard.

    • @talontsi92
      @talontsi92 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jafromobile A Reed switch is definitely not a hall effect sensor. A reed switch is a physical switch that is magnetically actuated when the magnetic field passes by the contacts. A hall effect sensor varies voltage with changes in a magnetic field with no moving parts.
      What I suspect is happening with the reed switch in the cluster is essentially the contact bouncing at speed. I've seen dramatic swings at the top end of the track, as I believe the problem only gets worse with speed.
      I simply believe that the type of switch that Mitsubishi/Hyundai used was "good enough" for the OEM functionality of the car, but was never intended to be as accurate as we want things to be.

      He had a sticker on the bottom right side of the rear bumper that said "Bullitt Edition". It's not forest green. Where's the shaker hood? Where's the V8? I have a real problem with what Ford has always done with their iconic and legendary halo cars. For instance, the Cobra edition Ford Mustang. The "Cobra II" While it's a cool light car to build a drag car out of today, it was a horrible representation of something else great that had to do with the brand. A Post-OPEC stab at the consumer with a performance-less sticker package. I have the same issue with them replacing V8s with 4 and 6 cylinder engines and giving them a throwback name that evokes a completely different emotion. I feel like it shows a lack of ideas. Cars aren't appliances. Even if you can make that 4 or 6 cylinder turbo faster than the original car... if I see "Bullitt Edition", I want the loud angry forest green V8 mustang fastback running from cops sideways getting airborne in San Francisco. Maybe it's just me?...

      @@maxpower700 No matter how much of a Frank Zappa fan I am, I have never been able to fall in love with an appliance. I have been able to do this with dozens of cars, though. I have never fallen in love with a washing machine, or a toaster, or even a magical pig with marital aides stuck all over it, and I am not a believer in the Church of Appliantology no matter what the Central Scrutinizer says. Hitting the spin cycle does nothing for me like roasting the tires on something that makes awesome turbo noises with a twitch of my ankle and at my beck and call. I think that manufacturers believing that people want to drive appliances rather than making automobiles an extension of the driver is why modern cars have devolved into things lack everything resembling style and performance. If the car doesn't inspire specific emotion... an emotion that can't be satisfied with any other kind of appliance... then it lacks everything that justifies its existence in the first place. Remember that the American Automobile manufacturers are what saved the USA from the Great Depression because of the car culture that sprang from it. I don't recall any other appliance being credited with creating a culture. So if you're right, and if the modern car is an appliance, we're full circle in agreement of what killed off the American car culture. There were a lot of ugly stages along the way that helped... sure... like restrictor plate racing of the same chassis by 4 manufacturers around a track using things that don't resemble anything any of the car manufacturers are building. No more race it on Sunday, buy it on Monday. I feel like the more we view automobiles as appliances, the more we disconnect ourselves from the emotion of driving them and begin looking for any other kind of reward or pleasure center to take its place. Of course, looking out my truck's window down into the road rats around me in rush hour, I'm convinced we're both correct because everyone's driving down the road looking in their cell phone. By everyone, I mean 95% of everyone around me. Nobody's emotionally connected to their cars anymore. To me, this is disturbing. It's complacency. I hate complacency, normalcy, and especially boring cars.

      Even on the VW's, it's all about volumetric efficiency. How much fuel, how much air. An engine's volumetric efficiency changes based on how well it moves air at different RPM ranges. This is just a scale from minimum to maximum efficiency spread out over a table that's graduated by RPMs and air pressure. The numbers in each cell are percentages of volumetric efficiency. The sample cell is where the engine is operating. It's at x pressure at y RPMs... so it's ?% of VE (...so it needs _this_ much fuel.). The fuel being delivered is done so by another calculation and turned into injector duty cycles. If you're lean, you need to add a little bit of volumetric efficiency (air) and it will calculate and add that much fuel accordingly. You're absolutely right, the tuner craze actually started in Nevada in 1945, but the VW guys have been dominating the field very quietly all along. Even carbureted, the goal is to get that air fuel mixture just perfect for your operating conditions. That's actually harder to do mechanically than it is with this fancy graph that lets me tweak every single engine operating condition possible without having to make any mechanical adjustments at all. This is a lot easier than changing carburetor jets.

Turn off everything but AFRest, your Wideband, and your throttle position. Where you're at 100% throttle, tune the cells you're using until you've got the AFRest and your wideband signal sharing the same space. I've driven a 1g, 2g, and a 4g (I got to drive that one down PCH 1 from SF to San Simeon), but other than the factory 10-point bolts on the OE clutch assembly that most people blast off with an air chisel and replace with normal bolts, I'm unaware of its inner workings and systems. I know the 2.4L is the only one with any real performance potential, and Mitsubishi kept it around in the 4g production as a powertrain option. Without seeing it, it would be hard to guess?

It makes a world of difference in knock and power and is much easier to tune afr's. I ran a 50/50 mix for a year and afr's were always inconsistent from day to day no matter how I adjusted them. I ended up ditching the progressive controller as well and have a relay wired to the fps and I set a few parameters in ecmlink to tell it when to activate the pump. Jafro recirculating that bov will help your make more boost between shifts. I know you can tune it to run uncirculated but your losing the surge that can rapidly respool your compressor wheel.

    How come my nlts isn't working? Clutch switch always says 1 and it's wired like they show how to. Thanks

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unless you have "clutch cut enable" turned on, you won't see a clutch signal. It will stay flatlined. Normally the ECU doesn't even care about this value. It's when you have it turned on that it starts logging it. If all that's on correctly and it still doesn't work, look for a video somewhere in my collection labeled "Clutch wire work-around". I had a blown diode in the clutch wire on my 2g, and running the non-signal wire to ground accomplishes the same basic thing, it just may interfere with your cruise control is all. Meaning that you push in the clutch and cruise doesn't disengage.

    Water injection amounts:
    The studies done in ww2 suggest that an increase in water-fuel ratio from 20% to 40% provided twice the increase in effective octane rating as did the increase from 0% to 20%. Can that single injector flow that much?
    Personally I'll be running a pre turbo boost pressurised system on my 4.0L, and I'll be injecting around a litre a minute onto the compressor nut.

      Wow is that difficult to tune for? I'd imagine some is going to cling to the intercooler

    • @skippy2987
      @skippy2987 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@littlerhino2006 In a word: Yes
      In many words:
      Yes, the boost compensating part is automatic, flow will be proportional to boost (well, the square root of boost) which is close enough to the "extra octane" requirements, but rpm requirements are a different story.
      Making it proportional to rpm is going to be difficult. Because my engine will be on full boost from 2000rpm to 5500rpm there's about a 275% difference in flow requirement at the same boost level. I'll need to incorporate some kind of rpm control to stop it from flooding at the low end. With water injection volume the tuning window is quite wide, so a stepped system is ok, but I'll still need to have three or four "stages".
      No intercooler. With this volume of water I won't need one for temperature control, and as you pointed out, I'll have pooling problems if I even try

      Yeah, but are you going to drive that car on the street, though? I like your approach. It's one I've considered on other projects. My efforts are to prevent melting pistons in the event that my water methanol tank decides to run out before my gas tank and still get me home. When Nick Stack had a compound turbo setup, he was spraying methanol directly into the turbine housing, but had a bung welded onto the compressor housing for a solenoid. It was a brilliant setup because of how it solved compressor housing temperatures, but far beyond my math skills to fully explain or repeat. I'm not running 7's [yet]. Who am I kidding? I'll probably never run 7's.

    • @skippy2987
      @skippy2987 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jafromobile No its not going to be on the street, but even with the engine like this I could. It's a relatively light car for the engine size (1450kg for a 4 litre engine) and is tuned for bulk low rpm torque out as standard, it doesn't need boost at all to be quick. It also has low enough compression that other people run 5-7psi without any intercooling at all on premium fuel. So if I was willing to spring for a real ecu I could easily tune it to be safe without water.

    • @skippy2987

      I just realised I could use an rpm mappable boost controller to do the rpm function easily...

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FYI: it was 48°F. In hotter weather, 20 PSI doesn't sound bad. You want to base your tire pressure off of the surface temperatures. I can't tell you the rules about that because I can't find anyone willing to share them.

    One question.. Why is the engine the wrong way? im confused /s
