That button with the half filled square is the "downhill switch" it forces the CVT in the lowest possible ratio without overrevving. Manual says it's meant for engine braking and towing😊
Ok that’s great appreciate I thought it would be something for the gearbox but at the time I made the video couldn’t find the information out. Cheers for watching 👍
Great to hear your keeping it as is. To many cars get messed about with. Like you said these are getting rare now. But they are fab little volvos. I was 19 when I got mine in the 80s. People always asked why I drove an old man's car. They missed out on a great car. Its great seeing old volvos the love they deserve.
Glad you can appreciate my plans with it. I feel it would be criminal to mess around with this little car fingers crossed I can get this one back on the road and enjoy it for what it is
Thank you SO much for keeping it original and as near as damn it, as it is!! That's what should be done...you can only have original once! "My Dad had one" of these, roughly same colour but his was a 340 GL (1.4 83 Y-Plate)...Didn't set the heather alight but was an honest little car....and took the family on many a camping holiday round Scotland. Looking forward to the next episodes.
I lived in Europe from 1986-1993 and remember seeing these on the road. This little car is in such “good” condition inside and out it really warrants the minimal bodywork you pointed out and a fresh full respray in the original color. The “patina” look is just not right for THIS car. The original wheels/caps need a refurb, they are so period perfect and unique to this model. The interior is in such great shape it needs a full steam clean valet. The bumpers and trim would come back to original life with peanut oil (yeah the one you cook with). The old Volvo and Saab bumpers respond really well to it. It actually dissolves any other nasty products that have been used over the years. So, full original color respray, wheel refurb, interior valet, and keep the mechanicals bone stock but refreshed. I bet you could daily drive this another 150k miles!!! Please shift this car to a priority, don’t take 2 years to get it well. 😊 Liked and Subscribed!!
Hi firstly thank you for watching and subscribing. This little car doesn’t need much at all well compared to what we normally deal with. The plan is set to just get the car on the road with the paint just as it is for now due to the fact we have a few cars now waiting for paint (also we need to build a paint area) so don’t want another sat about but a full repaint in the original colour is definitely on the cards later down the line I don’t plan to do any mods to the car I like it just as it is. As for time line it takes as long as it takes around real life. But really want it on the road for early next year if possible. Cheers Marc 👍
@@SimpsonsClassics Thanks for the fast reply! That sounds brilliant Marc. Was thinking, if it doesn’t have aircon you might want to source a pair of rear pop out windows from a breaker, bit strange yours doesn’t have them. Our 1991 Volvo 240 was weirdly optioned though as my Dad ordered it and picked it up at the factory in Sweden and then drove it back to Germany. Was that really 31 years ago? 😅

Hi great car and content. I had a 360 in blue, great car built like a tank and over engineered. Mine had a saddle back petrol tank with a feeder pipe across. These can go and leak petrol. Other points are front valance which you kindly touched on also b post these can rust quite easily. I do have left from my 360 a genuine cassette holder that goes where the bracket is for where the cb radio was in your car. I also have two thermostats. I think I have also a cigarette lighter from the Volvo. I think the cassette holder are quite rare. I do like your plans for the car, and like your approach to the restoration of the Volvo. If you would like the parts mentioned above I will post them on for free. Good luck with the car, have a great day. Matthew
Hey Matthew. Thanks for the comment really appreciate the love for this car I do plan to keep it as is if possible and just get it on the road for now. I did wonder what might have gone in that area. Would be cool to get some old cassettes in there. Those parts do sound interesting and could potentially be interested. Let me have a poke around the car more and see if he left the holder in there before I say yes to such parts. Thanks buddy 👍 Marc
I’ve got a small CB radio been sat in a box in my garage for years if you want it. Looks same size as the bracket there but hard to tell on a video. Happy to donate it as a thanks for all the help your videos given me.
Hey thank you I would appreciate that as ever I will check sizes etc I am hoping I might find the radio in the car maybe but if not definitely interested… cheers for watching 👍
Great to see you have this volvo after rhe daf 66 they would make a daf 77. But became a volvo 343. Later it became volvo 340. I own a Volvo 340 dl from 1986.
The 360 had a good Volvo red block in it 2.0l, this engine was very good in the 340 I had, the DLs had a 4 speed manual, there was also a 1.7l renault engine in later 340s, I had a 1.4 and a 2.0 and loved them both
I wish we kept my dad's four door 340 GL 1.7 because it was very funny to drive (rear wheel drive), safe, comfortable, well made and it was the very first car I drove. I love it. After 15 years of great service, my father changed it for an S40 1.6 which I daily drive with 300000 km. and we want to keep it for much more time.
Many hundreds of years ago my parents bought a 1983 365 GLS 2.0 and it was mega!! It would great to see a full restoration and cleanup of this little beauty. I like that you want to keep it standard! Looking forward to seeing how you get on… You need an Ace of Base cassette for the stereo!!😂

Took it on a 600km trip last weekend, didnt miss a beat driving at 120kmh the whole way. The 1.4 Variomatic isnt the quickest, but it will always get you there. One thing to do is to bolt down the carburetor with some loctite, as they have a tendency to rattle loose.
Hey thanks for those tips. Yes this one does need some rust repair in that area which I will try and cover the best I can. Didn’t know that about the carb I will definitely bare that in mind. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more 👍

You were spot on with the history of the 300-series! I love the odd styling which is now super cool. I'm a huge Volvo fan anyway, currently have a V70 P2 but had many 740s, V50 T5, V40, XC60 etc. The older ones are my fave. So glad you are keeping this old timer going especially with some natural patina! They are worth keeping. The CVT is whacky to drove but curiously fun. Great video and project fella 👍 also it's a perfect candidate for attending the Festival Of The Unexceptional which I went to this year and it was absolutely incredible.
Oh cheers for the comment nice to hear from another Volvo fan. I love the older volvos to I had a v70 P2 many years back it was a great car loved it. I really would like to attend that event if I can. 👍
Nicely balanced little car….. gearbox attached to diff…… prop attached to bellhousing an engine. Handles well😎👍🏼…. Renault engine…… I did think about turning mine 💪🏼😆
Your switch is low hold, pulls the cvt "down a gear" that system is activated by the providing a earth the 4 way vac valve under the bonnet, others that use that system is hard braking and full throttle. That control box has issues which can be over cone by replacing some components and adding a diode. I have a full cvt maintenance and test guide if you would like a copy.
Ok that’s great appreciate I thought it would be something for the gearbox but at the time I made the video couldn’t find the information out. I would be interested in seeing that guide if possible buddy 👍 Cheers for watching 👍
Hello I'm not sure where you're based, but there is a big Volvo place that deal's in old school Volvo's on the A1 near the black cat roundabout st Neots area. I think it's called Lakes they could probably help you out.
If your levers move on the column classic swede do a brilliant little bracket that pins the shroud that goes over the steering wheel spindle back together as they’re prone to cracking, great work so far! All the best from Sheffield. Subscribed 😊
Great to hear you’re keeping the little Volvo in a tasteful resto. It’ll be awesome when you have it done but I appreciate your workshop has several toys waiting for you to work your magic on before this one gets your full attention. 👍
Thanks buddy yes this one will be a little different for sure but should keep my brain working away. It will be a slow burner but should be fun at the same time 👍
Great video. Totally agree with your decision to keep it original. The car has such a special history it would almost be a shame to modify it and I'm sure it will be a great car when its put back on the road. Its great to see its not to rusty either, i just hope you can find all the parts which shouldn't be too difficult with the great community that Volvos have!👍😎
Later volvo car in the Netherlands made the 440 460 480 and the s40 and v 40 first generation I have worked at volvo and I still love these cars I had a 340 360 glt and an 440dl great cars
Great to see another video on this car! The brightwork around the windows is in far better condition than mine which is slightly annoying given this one has been dumped outside for decades, haha. Also can't help but admire someone's optimism by putting a towbar on, it must have been bloody slow towing something! Looking forward to the next vid mate.
Used to tow an old (heavy) caravan with one. Not fun but could keep 55mph up on motorway but down to 45 up hill on a motorway. The vario however makes towing smoother which is better. Another 50 horse power and it would have been better!
Glad you like this one. Yes the tow bar made me laugh might get a little trailer just for a laugh. He used it for the tip run apparently. Thanks for watching stay tuned for more 👍
I was waiting for the history lesson and you've got it right, it was a DAF project that VOLVO took on, Twin Cam channel did a full video on it. The hot version was the 2.0 GLT and although not the quickest hot hatch, they did look good, especially in gunmetal grey. Doubt I'll be able to find parts but if I do I'll be in touch. Best of luck with this fab little car.
Yes I know a few bits about them but want to learn more for sure. The GLT is a rare beast these days for sure. Hopefully I can get this one on the road and enjoy it for what it is. Thanks for watching as ever 👍
Just incase you haven't checked them out already there are two excellent U-tube sites which feature the 300 series Firstly Morsel & Motors run by Sion. He owes three 340's. Including one of the first 1977 models produced. He's a huge fan of the 300 series and I imagine he would be happy to offer you guidance on repairs etc. Also check out the brilliant Twin cam site run by Ed. A while ago he met up with Sion and did a very detailed history and background video to the 300 series, using Sion's cars . Well worth watching. If you get the chance buy one of the Volvo 300 series brochures that sometimes come up on ebay. They actually are rather good and generally have some interesting drawing of the de dion (hope I've spelt it right!) back axle layout and the cvt rubber belt drive layout. As I recall all 340s and 360's had chrome window frames. 340s and the 360 GL/GLS had the rather horrible silver plastic insert in the front and rear windows Which shrank and become brittle with age on my cars. The impressive 360GLT had a more solid matt black insert. One day maybe I will find a nice and now extremely rare 360 GLT saloon🙂
Hey thanks for the comment, yes I have been a follower of both those channels they are excellent and shows how cool these little cars are. I have grabbed a brochure of ebay it’s firmly now in the history of the car I also already had the correct Haynes manual which is cool. Thanks for watching stay tuned for more 👍
The rust infront of the battery towards the headlights is probably due to a bad battery starting to boil. I had rust in that exact same place in my DL as a sign of a bad voltage regulator, you will want to change that out. I also recommend looking for chrome parts for all the locks and handles, they look incredibly good and should fit right in. If you don't have a spare wheel, I believe I may have the original spare wheel left in pristine condition. Painting the valve cover in some chrome/silver color will be a good mod that I would do. I am also warning you a head of time about the fuel pump spacer brick. It is most likely the original cheap and poorly made plastic spacer that will by now have cracked. Remove it and take a look, and if need be buy a new one made in aluminum from the netherlands. Final thing I'd point out ahead of time is to clean up the fuze box. Other than that, good luck.
Hey thanks for the heads up on the battery side of things appreciate that. I have the spare wheel it was just next to the car in this video. I will defo do all those checks that you have noted, Thanks for the heads up and watching.
Yes I think it would be great to find another boot lid in the right colour but we will see. I think it will be restoring this one.. cheers for watching
No monstertruck then? Ok fair enough. Another idea is that you lower it. Transform it to a rear wheel drive. Install that famous volvo/ yamaha v8 in the trunk so that it can be seen through the rear window, kind of like a Ferrari and of course you must get one of those prancing elk badge and put it on one of the sides. Oh yes and replace the seats with ones in leather.
Love to see done up as these are getting rare wish I could work with you please don't rat rod this or modify as it look better done up kept standard just take towbar off I love the bigger Volvo's too
Like mentioned the plan is to keep it as is get it on the road then maybe re paint it at a later date. Tow bar is staying its part of its history and will be something charming about doing the tip run in this little car with a little trailer. Thanks for watching stay tuned for more 👍
The roof gutter and windscreen trim is a plastic aluminium degradable rubbish. There is a black version but you'd need everything. Pre-81 models have real metal trim but the windscreen trim is wider on those model so not really suitable for a mk3 like this. Basically you are stuck with it and no decent shiny new trim available unless you can find some universal trim. The side window trims are real metal, and usually good for life. The back side windows should open on s hinge. Rust wise you need to fabricate the number plate area, you will be very luck to find a good donor. You will probably not find a donor hatch the right colour, but used ones are usually in good shape, you are going to have to paint it. The hole in the front cross beam is for the adjustable bonnet rubber buffer. The bonnet will move around in the wind without it, would recommend sorting that properly.
Hi Tony appreciate the comment yes I am aware of the rust issues and one reason I wanted the car is to practice some skills with fab work. I have a few leads on donor cars so shouldn't be to bad.
You had a 340 and a 360 the 340 new model from 1986 had 1.4 1.7 petrol an 1.6 diesel the 360 was a 2.0 petrol and there was a sporty version the 360 glt
I heard that Clarkson HATED these. Not only evident in an episode of old Top Gear, he also bought any for sale and scrapped them - that's the rumour anyway.
Yep a few people have said that. Not normal what I would go for as I like the big volvos if you have seen the channel before. But this is a little different 👍

Oh what a fantastic comment! You really need to look around at my other videos. This channel wouldn’t be where it is now if I didn’t have some sort of an idea or the will to have a go. Appreciate your comment but it’s a little uncalled for.
Didn't like my underpowered 1400 crappy Renault engine with really stiff gear change and the rubber bushed prop shift that gave way not to mention the heavy steering. Saying that it was built like a tank

@@jimmer1976 that’s sort of my idea to it has a story to tell so want to rock that look while we get it on the road. If you see my other projects I don’t need another bare bones restoration right now 👍
You were spot on with the history of the 300-series!
Great plan for the car, love the colour too 😀
Cheers appreciate that 👍
Nicely balanced little car….. gearbox attached to diff…… prop attached to bellhousing an engine. Handles well😎👍🏼…. Renault engine…… I did think about turning mine 💪🏼😆
Oh sounds like it should be fairly decent to drive then. There has been a few comments like this so it’s exciting 👍
Mine was a 340 GL
So glad you’re keeping her standard 😍😍😍😍
Cheers glad you approve stay tuned for more 👍
Your switch is low hold, pulls the cvt "down a gear" that system is activated by the providing a earth the 4 way vac valve under the bonnet, others that use that system is hard braking and full throttle.
That control box has issues which can be over cone by replacing some components and adding a diode.
I have a full cvt maintenance and test guide if you would like a copy.
Ok that’s great appreciate I thought it would be something for the gearbox but at the time I made the video couldn’t find the information out.
I would be interested in seeing that guide if possible buddy 👍
Cheers for watching 👍
That guide really is good, helped me out big time for mine aswell 😊
Hello I'm not sure where you're based, but there is a big Volvo place that deal's in old school Volvo's on the A1 near the black cat roundabout st Neots area. I think it's called Lakes they could probably help you out.
Hey I am up north but I know of the place you mention it’s somewhere I will definitely need to pay a visit to one day. 👍
good choice, restore as close to factory, get it mot'ed and sorted for many years motoring so people can enjoy seeing it driving around.
That’s the plan buddy. Cheers for watching 👍
I have Subscribed can’t wait to see future videos on this Car them Volvos are absolutely fantastic good luck with the project 😊
Hey appreciate that thanks. Stay tuned for more 👍
Sounds like a good plan to me.only recentley found your channel.subscribed.love me classic cars.
Cheers glad you approve, stay tuned for more on this one 👍
If your levers move on the column classic swede do a brilliant little bracket that pins the shroud that goes over the steering wheel spindle back together as they’re prone to cracking, great work so far! All the best from Sheffield.
Subscribed 😊
Cheers mark appreciate the comment I will definitely get stuck into more investigation with little car and bring you all along for the ride 👍
It will be a slow burner but should be fun at the same time 👍
My 340 got the B200F redblock with a 5 speed manual👍
Sounds a quick little car 👍
Great video. Totally agree with your decision to keep it original. The car has such a special history it would almost be a shame to modify it and I'm sure it will be a great car when its put back on the road. Its great to see its not to rusty either, i just hope you can find all the parts which shouldn't be too difficult with the great community that Volvos have!👍😎
Cheers appreciate that buddy I hope I can find the bits also it will be nice to have this little thing back out on the road and enjoy it hopefully 👍
Later volvo car in the Netherlands made the 440 460 480 and the s40 and v 40 first generation I have worked at volvo and I still love these cars I had a 340 360 glt and an 440dl great cars
Oh that’s so cool! Cheers for watching 👍
Thanks for watching stay tuned for more 👍
Interesting project car and starting to get rare
That’s sort of why I thought it would be nice to save this little car 👍
I had an 85" , 360glt witha 2l manual. After a year put the turbo of a 740 onto it. It flew.. ripped every v8 I could find.
Oh sounds a great little car that!
Just incase you haven't checked them out already there are two excellent U-tube sites which feature the 300 series
Firstly Morsel & Motors run by Sion.
Thanks for watching stay tuned for more 👍
Try lakes volvo breakers look at furious driving vid at breakers .
Yes I have them ear marked for a trip some time don’t worry 👍
Grab another boot if you can and you could do a video on your restore of the boot. You are very good at painting.
All great ideas 👍
Love to see done up as these are getting rare wish I could work with you please don't rat rod this or modify as it look better done up kept standard just take towbar off I love the bigger Volvo's too
Like mentioned the plan is to keep it as is get it on the road then maybe re paint it at a later date. Tow bar is staying its part of its history and will be something charming about doing the tip run in this little car with a little trailer. Thanks for watching stay tuned for more 👍
Bare in mind the 1400 engine was in the Renault 5 turbo….. in a slightly different form 💪🏼😎😂……very easy to work on…… I had a 5 turbo as well
I think the prop shaft is aluminium take care of the splines as well👍🏼
Hey cheers for the tips I will be sure to look out for these bits. Yes the little Renault engine should hopefully be ok.
I LOVE volvo, 70s and 80s.
Same here 👍
I think my grandpa had a graphic equalizer mounted in that "cb radio" bracket in one of his 340's.
Aha that’s cool!
@@SimpsonsClassics Aftermarket naturally.
I had 2 340's 1.4 then a 1.7 petrol when you got it moving went fast. The big plus nobody pulls out in front of an old volvo
Haha epic I completely get that with the 940 people move out the way lol
Check also under the battery tray, mine rotted badly there.
Ok great I will do 👍
The roof gutter and windscreen trim is a plastic aluminium degradable rubbish.
My father had a 345 with a 1700 engine. It was a lot quicker than my xr3i.
Oh that sounds a great car!
there are a couple of 340's on ebay atm breaking. not the right colour for the bootlid but might be in better nick
Hey thanks yes found those buddy got a few bits on their way. Cheers for watching 👍
@@SimpsonsClassics oh wicked!
The chassis rails act as cooling for the trans. iirc, so that probably kept them dry internally and free of rot?
Yes I did forget to mention that on the video it’s a clever design really
You had a 340 and a 360 the 340 new model from 1986 had 1.4 1.7 petrol an 1.6 diesel the 360 was a 2.0 petrol and there was a sporty version the 360 glt
Oh cool cheers for confirming all that 👍
i would paint the whole car in raptor liner sand just fix the mechanical and drive it haha
Haha would be a fun build that but the old paint will do for now 👍
Restore.....stock. 🤟
That’s the plan 👍
there must a Volvo specialist somewhere who have to have some 300 parts
There is a few good forums which should help out it’s all good fun hunting for parts though
DL came to the UK .I can find a L for you
👍
The front scuttle hides a lot of rust which can leak in tonthe foot wells.
I had to remove mine and rebuild under it, by welding in new metal.
Oh wow that’s for the heads up as you can see on the video the scuttle does have a little bit of rust but on the hole doesn’t look awful
@@SimpsonsClassics no mine look better... but under was rusty under, just a heads up, you can check by going under the dash and looking up.
@@bencharlton3210 oh spot on I will definitely check that out 👍
Near the Battery Tray My Y Reg 340 needed welding in the area where the spare wheel sits in the engine bay .
Good shout
What was the music while you were polishing the car? It was excellent!
Can’t remember I will have a look it will be a youtube approved song.
I had one of those in the 90’s a complete death trap .
Your the first person to say that about them.
I heard that Clarkson HATED these. Not only evident in an episode of old Top Gear, he also bought any for sale and scrapped them - that's the rumour anyway.
I guess people will spread rumours. For me it’s interesting and worth saving
Big turbo?
Not on this one unfortunately
Its a renault 19 with volvo badge, tenault engins to .
Yep a few people have said that. Not normal what I would go for as I like the big volvos if you have seen the channel before. But this is a little different 👍
This is a further development of the DAF 77 with Renault 1,4 l Engine and dutch variomatic
If you don't know anything about car paint and how to restore it (wich you don't know when i look the video)
Taket som professionel help and the little Volvo Will be like new... then u can work it on the way to a mot.. please. U need professionell help.
I don’t expect it to be fast but should be a fun little car to own. Definitely built like a tank!
Stop procrastinating just start it
Getting board now just start it!!!!
Waiting for parts as mentioned. The engine cross member is very rusty and about to collapse as mentioned. Start video coming very soon.
