It's brand new in OW2 yep! I've actually been finding it helpful for sniping critical health enemies at a distance. I've killed some Pharahs that way even.
It's like a weird pseudo-projectile that you have to lead it a bit to land. Feels like it anyway.

My advice would also be to softcommit more.
Diving on squishies with a mele animation cancel.is great, but if you're diving a team sometimes you wanna just drop from.high ground and keep your jump to bail out if you can't see the whole picture

another tip it blocks enemy projectiles when they're in the shield so if your balls enough you could just dash an enemy ulting reaper and bubble him

You could also use melee cancel when landing and you dont have to risk missing the shot

I say instead of the punch just start shooting , the animation isn’t worth the damage and timing to be consistent

It’s the burst damage and saved ammo that makes it the most valuable. Punching doesn’t let you fire again faster when you land since there are internal buffers that stop you from firing instead of it being animation based

Punch does the save amount of dps as Winston's primary fire. Primary does 60 damage per second and mele is 30 damage and takes .5 seconds to do. So adding in punches at any time will do the same dps and use less ammo
