I remembered how I discovered Akuji the heartless as a demo in Gex 3 : Deep Cover Gecko back in 1999. Me and my youngest brother became interested about this game and bought it from the game store. We used to play this game together. It was scary to play at first, but we both managed to overcome our fear as we ventured into each different levels and manage to completed all the levels.

This game holds up surprisingly well. The character art and animation, even given the PS1's limitations, still look pretty good and the level design is interesting. Glen Schofield directed this game.

Akuji is Litt🔥🔥🔥 Glad I repurchased it. The rich tropical environments & graphics, macabre storyline & complex characters riveted Me to the screen. Gameplay was intensely challenging, But Fun. Never a dull moment. Samedi was a nightmarish adversary, Excellent Final Boss fight, A Treacherous Character indeed. You knocked this one out the park Man. Keep up the great gaming.✊🏾🔥🔥🔥💯
The music and the atmosphere in this game are something else. Definitely not in the best PS1 games but I still liked playing it. Basically Gex in a voodoo world. =P
This is why I loved the old directions. Original Playstation and Playstation 2 were the best far better than Jim Farthead Ryan ERA
The music at 31:05 still gives me spine chills. I swear the music in this game was off charts compared to any other game at the time

This is a great game, and very underrated. I do wish the camera was a little better and there could've been a few more complex puzzles, but it's still a lot of fun.
this game used to give me nightmares when i played it as a 6 year old child, especially the level with the giant snake bridge and the lava. the clump of snakes at that section always made me nauseous.

Yes because i played Blood Omen 2 and the puzzles and layout of this game are VERY similar. Crystal Dynamics and Eidos made some of THE BEST games for the PS1 at the time. And it's great that you can still play all of them on ANY PS3.

Funny story. I poked holes on my finger with a needle to draw out blood and drew blood pentagrams inspired by Akuji The Heartless and proudly showed them to my mom. Needless to say i had to go see a school shrink because apparently it's not normal behaviour for a 7 year old

From a design perspective, this game is a masterpiece, which shouldn't be a surprise considering Crystal made both Gex and Soul Reaver.
Someone oughta give it a remake, but I doubt it actually.
Akuji didn't really sell well, being seen a Tomb Raider knock off with mild controls (it was too early for the spinning camera without analog sticks, plus no auto-locking onto nearest targets was a pain).
So it won't sell now, sadly.

The classics deserve to be revived with the best possible technology, but in this case it still looks like a shitty game from years ago, a real shame.
Don't understand why this game becomes worse after Khalas stage.Seems like it is because of ambient of that level,it is just perfect.
Worse? There are a couple of levels that are eerily excellent after that as well! The one with the tree houses and gliders, for example.
The most bizarrely and disgustingly satisfactory for me, was where you fight with Purity. Damn...
