Me too…been trying to decide between these models. I still have an amazing Samsung 50” plasma TV from 20 years ago as my main TV, but it’s 1080p. I know OLED is even better, but I hate the extra extra thin screens (they look too easy to bend or break, especially when moving house). If anyone knows of an OLED model (Sony, LG, Samsung) that is a good thickness, let me know.

not surprised the fact that Lowsense and Turd Crappy Loser (TCL) are Made in China. Also QM8 is cost almost as much as Sony A80L like they have confidence that their Chinese TV Technology is just as good as Japanese or Korean TV technology that they should raise prices.
You should be able to adjust the settings on the Sony better and when you do this the Sony clearness, motion processing, details and quality should be a a lot better than the TCL. Just my opinion.
Even though it's not as bright as the tcl, the smooth motion on the Sony is amazing. Plus I'm a movie buff, so it's probably a better choice for me. Is it easy to calibrate?
@@TechSteveHey Mr. Steve, I typed out a pretty long comment but I'm guessing you will get this more quickly. Speaking of picture calibration, can you help me with my Samsung CU8000? Thanks in advance, and I hope you get my other comment I added on the main page.

Great review and I'm tempted by the Sony as we need a replacement for our 10yr old Panasonic plasma tv. However, our room has lots of windows and is very bright which caused reflection issues when watching the plasma during the day. So, is the Sony still a good option?
Great review but looking at the footage, the Sony looks really dim in comparison and I do wonder if it's just the camera making it look dim. @3:53 The flamingoes are nearly crushed on the Sony whereas they look really bright on the QM8. However @14:51, the falcon is brighter on the X90L which is strange.
I agree that the Sony looked dim on the demo we're watching here, but in real life it looks great. Does it look better than the TCL? Maybe, I can't make up my mind. I'd need to see them both while watching a movie. Qled and mini-leds sound more impressive than Bravia LCD, so that could sway people. I was about the buy the QM8, but BB was out of stock when I tried to order so I looked into the Sony X90L and Samsung QN90C. Dang, they all have amazing pictures, but the Samsung is $800 more, and I can't really see an advantage at this time. The TCL is back in stock, so now I have to choose between the QM8 85" and the X90L at $2000 each.
Hi all! Which one is better the tcl q7 65inch on sale for 699 or the Hisense 65inch currently priced at $945 at Best Buy not on sale sadly 😢. Getting a new tv this week. Any advice would be great gonna use it mostly TH-cam and Netflix
10:41 unfortunately tcl looks so much better ... We already bought the x90l.... Such a big difference omg!!! Thanks for the videos , I love all your videos ,very honest, unbiased easy to comprehend and up to point
At 7:09 the discussion is about the detail in the distance being sharper on the Sony (which I'm not sure I'm actually seeing) but what IS immediately noticeable is how the grass on the Sony looks to all be very close in color while the TCL's grass shows clear variation in the different lengths. The Sony also has better shadow detail in the shade of the closer trees.
The Sony is two years behind in tech, is not bright enough, and really is not impressive. I have the 98" R754 which replaced a Sony Z9J, and honestly, I dont miss the Sony processing one bit. In real world content, the TCL looks amazing. The QM8 being MiniLED and brighter, is just icing on the cake.
Thanks for the great review man! It’s really appreciated. The first thing that I noticed whilst watching the review was that the screen on the Sony looked considerably darker than the TCL. So much so, that it was the only thing I could focus on.
Mini LED is the way to go. To me, it is a better tech and brightness says a lot over details in my opinion. Then, once you combine that to price point, is a no-brainer. For what you pay for the Sony, you can basically up one size on the TCL.
I feel like most people prefer brightness over accuracy, but I personally personally prefer an image that's properly calibrated as close to reference as possible. I base this on seeing peoples displays that look like a bug zapper, and when I eyeball it closer to calibrate, they hate it and want the zapper back 😂.
Just got a 65 x90l, and fuuuuuu it can go soooo damn bright!!! I love the HDR tone mapping, it doesn't blow up bright details and displays dark scenes with still so much detail! My 2016 4K Bravia is nothing compared to this but that TV only accepted HDR signal, it still had an 8bit panel and no local dimming. I'm sooo damn happy with it, I feel like the "creators intent" really lives through this TV. Also Bravia Core content is literally as good as blu-rays!!!
@@Jacob-ed1bl I can just imagine that it would be so bright, that the brightness would literally blind you if you have a very dark scene right after a very bright scene... It could probably make a sun actually look like the sun outside 😅 (nah that's impossible the sun is like a billion nits, but it will come closer than any other TV, now if only the Sony tone mapping was an industry standard it would probably be the best non OLED TV you could get)
@Tech Steve Thank you, great video. But damn... I would have loved to hear your OWN PERCEPTION of the viewing angle. You camera showed us but sometimes the personal experience is not that bad or good as the "numbers" or camera tell. How did you percieve the viewing angles? Acceptable at 45 degrees? Or did you think it was just bad, all washed out quikly already by a few degrees? Keep up the good work!
And that’s why Sony is the king right now IMO. Their processing is amazing and no other TV can really compete, especially at this price. I have come to learn that it’s not blooming, hdr, backlights, dimming zones, or brightness that makes a good TV, it’s processing. Great review! Your one of the only reviewers that I’v seen really show what good processing can do.
Have you tried them both? If not I think you might be a bit biased towards Sony here, because I've seen them both and the Qm8 has the more punchier and brighter image, it looks more blessing to the eye than the Sony but not by much.
@@ahmedduch5670 I totally agree, the TCL is brighter. If you look at my comment I said, in my opinion, it’s not brightness or dimming zones or anything like that that makes a good TV it’s processing. You could have the brightest TV in the world, but if it doesn’t have good processing, then it’s gonna look bad in motion.
@@ronnierivas5478 That sucks but I think that’s just bad luck. I can also find someone to say they have been using the same tv for 10 years no problem so that’s not really a down side. You can find customers for every TV brand that say what you just said. That’s not exclusive to Sony.
Very nice review for me Sony I have Sony and all three rooms so far and I want the Sony X90L in my living room. it may take me a minute or two, but I’m getting that Sony.
Great video, easy sub. I liked how even handed it was and it really highlighted which tv is for which type of viewer as the comments clearly show. Much thanks for the help in making my decision.
Great comparison video. The shaky cam at the beginning was making me seasick though 🤢🤢🤢. The Sony looked so much dimmer than the TCL. Was it because they were side by side and the camera was lowering the exposure to compensate for the TCL and making the Sony darker?
Sorry about that I’m trying a new point of view approach. I adjusted the iso for the brighter TV, I made a video before leveling out the brightness and people are still commenting about how it was unfair
@@TechSteve It’s all good. I like the side by side shots but the difference in brightness was worrying. I did see your individual review of the X90L and you pointed out that the brightness was good and the footage reflected that. Keep up the good work.
Perfect timing! I was just introduced to the TCL QM8 a few days ago, and it's indeed a solid TV option. However, my heart still leans towards the Sony X90L. The only minor gripe I have is that I wish it were a tad brighter, though my wallet is not on the same page, sadly! 😂😂
Both have bad viewing angles cause both are built on VA screens. Compare that with Samsung, where their higher end TVs are built on IPS(ADS) screens and have excellent viewing angles. Both TCL and Sony needs to start building their higher end sets on IPS screens. Dimming zones make up for IPS inherent low contrast which is why most Samsung high end non-OLED TVs are built on IPS.
the sony looks horrible, no color, not brightness, a lot of blooming, and the whole thing looks dark gray. tcl clears easily and if brightness is too much for you just reduce it and I can clearly see all the picture imperfections on the tcl unlike the sony. I could even see vains on the neck of the presenter on minute 4:34
I tell you Sony X90L is basic cheap model of Sony is not new technology is not give you something you don't have been in Ader cheap television I don't like what Sony do in the three years 3 Sony do old chip television or to expensive television no something in the middl to bite Chinese best TV end price
SONY the way is looks in saturated dimmer colors & pops , is VERY CLOSE TO U8K BUT between this Sony & U8K , i would take U8K , got more feathers, BUT still i think , TCL QM8 is better TV in everything , just needs to play with setting to get the BEST out of it they way U LIKE IT in blks & colors ...but other 2 is dimmer TVS
I absolutely love this review! I saw how the Sony did better with the slower FPS, but I love the way the TCL pops with its colors. Do you know if the TCL does well with older animes that typically have stutter issues such as Naruto and One Piece?
Steve, great video- if I mostly watch sports, stream content from TH-cam/HBO/Netflix etc., and game (in that order), which TV do you think would fit my use case best?
@@austincowper7551Not Steve but absolutely. As somebody who has multiple tv brands in their house, the Sony has the best motion as well as upscaling for sports content. Especially on wide angle shots for content like football it’s great you’re still able to see the detail in the background. Also, Sony has a higher Q/A than TCL and tend to last longer so take that into your decision as well!
Contrast on QM8 is way better. Damn accuracy. It’s like you want something that looks dull and realistic or superb contrast that may not be as realistic? Even Oled does not look realistic, blacks are not that black in real life. I think critics put too much weight in accuracy versus simply image quality, contrast and features. The QM8 has all in spades and destroys this Sony
I doubt the Sony looks that way - it's capable of 1,200 nits so unless the QM8 is doing 1,800 nits in every image. Maybe someone at TCL accidentally labeled the Vivid mode as Movie mode (I hope that's not the case and they can update the firmware quickly). Actually towards the end, the Sony looks brighter than the QM8 with the falcons so something is a bit off.
I adjusted the camera to the brightest TV in the the video right before it clipped the highlights and this is what you get, the Sony is bright enough in real life but the TCL is blinding in comparison
It's definitely a big bang for the buck if brightness is what you want...for me it's exactly what I wanted and everyone who looks at my 75" qm8 are wowed by its performance for a fraction of the cost of an lg oled, I picked mine up on Amazon on a 1 day sale for 1499.00.....that's ridiculously cheap and very pleased. You are right about the motion issue and some other quirky anomalies but in 2 years, I will replace it with a newer tech unit anyway. Good review 👍
I'm really stuck guys 😅 I want to buy a new tv and I found a TCL C755 55" and Sony x90k 55" at the same price tag, I'm more interested in movies and football than gaming, which TV should I get ?!
Very informative Steve. As close as they are to each other, for me it would boil down to which display had the deeper black levels especially in the black bars on a 235 aspect ratio in 4k. Any thoughts?
The TCL regarding black levels would be clearly better than the Sony. I purchased the QM8 65 inch and literally no blooming. This is the first LCD TV I didn't need to use bias lighting to help with blooming. Also this is the first TV I actually squinted when watching a movie because of the brightness. Watched the second Pacific Rim movie and it was great in HDR! Took a while to dial it in more than any other TV I have owned but it was worth it.
@@TechSteve yea anything up there on samsung is overpriced. That’s why I like tcl and Hisense cuz their flagship’s are more affordable and is just as good if not better. I really despise LG, they never change anything and not so innovative compared to the other brands

@@garrettstrutz7421 no not really. They cost more cuz it’s an established name. Hisense n tcl is new to the tv market. Samsung TVs have low picture quality besides their QD oled
I was in love with either the Hisense or TCL models in the 75" range a few weeks ago, and after really considering them both, I've switched my thinking to the Sony. I'd really like my next TV to last me at least 7-8 years and I worry about the daily usage of the Hisense or TCL. I'm fine with paying a little more if I'm getting a quality panel. I know on paper that the TCL has better stats than the Sony, but the picture of the Sony looks more realistic/better in my eyes. Just waiting on a solid deal for the X90L
Just returned my TCL. The upscaling was horrible not fluid at all. My 6 year old Samsung worked way better. When the TCL looked good it looked good, but it was very inconsistent. Not sure if that's the processing but Jesus it was extremely frustrating. The TCL for gaming was amazing. Didn't play well with my 4k Fire Stick. Waiting on my X90L to arrive. Heard its great for lower quality content which I use a lot depending on my sources. The TCL input picture settings were all over the place depending on what input, there was an option to enable settings across all inputs, but it didn't work. I tried calibration with your settings and it helped ALOT, but there was nothing for motion and processing that could be done.
Only if the answer is already on the video. That's the reason for posting videos, right. I have filmed over 900 videos I wish I could remember every detail.
I watched a side by side on the two because I was wondering the same. QM8 dominated it in every area. Easy decision on that one. The Sony was a much better competitor, but I’m personally still leaning towards the TCL. Especially for gaming
I'm not if it's a fair comparation. Fair was qm8 vs the x95l. We have the x95l 65" here in Europe and is incredibly tv but we don't have the qm8 but instead we have the c845 (not shore the model nr) which is nowhere near the cm8😢🤷♂️
Sony X95L is the best MiniLed TV and take a look at the comparisons and opinions of people who test the TV. The TCL QM8 or the European TCL C845 is worse, no other TV shows such a normal picture and those details as the sony X95L. If you have the money for the X95L, then you must buy it
The problem with TCL and other Chinese made television is the quality. Their televisions do not last ! I had to return two Hisense in the past and last week another stop working after just three years of use. I learned my lesson and will stick to Sony!
They have multiple models and multiple sizes, the way you framed your statement is saying that the entire lineup have bad quality control. You have to consider price, your location far as clean power grid, weather.
The TCL is good enough. And better with the lights & darks on the more common imagery. Sony is better if you want a level of detail nobody pays attention to and you’re willing to pay even more during Black Friday. I chose TCL, but big respect to Sony.

That really isn't close for me. The Sony looks so much better with details on lower resolution streaming content. Given perfect 4K content the TCL might be better but the Sony processing is so much better for things like TH-cam TV. Hopefully TCL gets its processing act together.
TCL quality assurance and support is very poor. After my last experience I refuse to ever buy another TCL product. I bought the 85" X90L. Plus Sony image processing can't be beat.

not surprised the fact that Lowsense and Turd Crappy Loser (TCL) are Made in China.

Yes, calman has an app for Sony store.portrait.com/consumer-software/calman-home-for-sony.html

I have the 85 inch QM8. My only complaint is that HDR 10 is much better than Dolby Vision on this TV. Also, upscaling is just okay.

Same, although I think I'm going to fork over the extra $100 for the X90L
Great review and I'm tempted by the Sony as we need a replacement for our 10yr old Panasonic plasma tv. However, our room has lots of windows and is very bright which caused reflection issues when watching the plasma during the day. So, is the Sony still a good option?
On Vivid mode the SONY is super bright and the colors are punchy. You won't regret it.
I will buy your plasma Clark. Seriously. My Samsung plasma just died.
I filmed at the default settings through out the video, because of the a-roll at the end i dimmed the the tcl
@@TechStevethanks for the info! I thought it was in movie mode - were these ootb settings?
Nah, to make the room brighter enough it would blow out the TVs on camera if you don’t dim them when I’m on camera
@@TechSteveI see, thanks!

X90L would be my choice.
Great video! I heard the x90l uses a different panel thank the 65 and 55 inch, va vs IPS, is there any info on this? Thank you
www.displayspecifications.com/en
The Sony is two years behind in tech, is not bright enough, and really is not impressive. I have the 98" R754 which replaced a Sony Z9J, and honestly, I dont miss the Sony processing one bit. In real world content, the TCL looks amazing. The QM8 being MiniLED and brighter, is just icing on the cake.
Thanks for the great review man! It’s really appreciated.
The first thing that I noticed whilst watching the review was that the screen on the Sony looked considerably darker than the TCL. So much so, that it was the only thing I could focus on.
It's still extremely bright but lower nits than the tcl
It's almost blindingly bright in a dark room, I often lower the brightness which is something I couldn't imagine myself doing on any TV before 🥴
@@High.on.Life_DnB I'm curious what that 5000 nit TV that's coming out with is going to look like.

Thank you, great video.

@@TechSteve Thanx, I´ll do that!
I would only consider the QM8 if they made it in 55-inch, but since they don't the choice is already made for me, I choose X90L.
I could care less about color accuracy. I love the bright punchy colors.
the x90l does get pretty bright.
Agreed, the TCL is over 2000 vs Sony is under 800 but much brighter than you expect
Yeah the Sony processing is better
@@ahmedduch5670 I totally agree, the TCL is brighter. If you look at my comment I said, in my opinion, it’s not brightness or dimming zones or anything like that that makes a good TV it’s processing. You could have the brightest TV in the world, but if it doesn’t have good processing, then it’s gonna look bad in motion.
But Sony are moody, and after having 3 they all have not lasted more than 3 years
@@ronnierivas5478 That sucks but I think that’s just bad luck.

Can you do an update video for the q8m with the beta firmware? I heard there is a big improvement in picture quality
Great review. I live the format. I can make an informed decision thank you
Great comparison video.
@jsonlee01 you can see difference when you compare that’s why I make these videos
@@vybo8921 i don’t see it that way but you’re welcome to your opinion.
Which one do you feel is better for everyday use for TVs and movies?
The Sony will be the most reliable by far. TCL and Hisense are still below average in reliability.
SONY the way is looks in saturated dimmer colors & pops , is VERY CLOSE TO U8K
BUT between this Sony & U8K , i would take U8K , got more feathers, BUT still i think , TCL QM8 is better TV in everything , just needs to play with setting to get the BEST out of it they way U LIKE IT in blks & colors ...but other 2 is dimmer TVS

@techsamurai11 nope it’s accurate, I check over and over again when filming
I adjusted the camera to the brightest TV in the the video right before it clipped the highlights and this is what you get, the Sony is bright enough in real life but the TCL is blinding in comparison

It's definitely a big bang for the buck if brightness is what you want...for me it's exactly what I wanted and everyone who looks at my 75" qm8 are wowed by its performance for a fraction of the cost of an lg oled, I picked mine up on Amazon on a 1 day sale for 1499.00.....that's ridiculously cheap and very pleased. Sony processors are simply amazing
