Hard to beat a 98" X90L, especially when you consider the build quality vs TCL and Hisense which are constructed as cheaply as possible. If you got in on Sony's summer 2024 sale it could be bought for $4,999, which is half the original rollout price last year which is a screaming deal for that monster.
As owner of Sony X900h ("55" 2020) 4k 120Hz model (FALD).. which costs $1200 back in early 2021 I can say Sony TVs are superior overall, especially for 90 series & above.. But their price is outragoues.. X90L (65 in) is $1800 in middle east, while TCL 745C (65 in) is like $900 Videos always show cheap U.S prices.. while Euro, Asia, Africa..etc have always have higher prices for Sony I don't care what Sony could bring to the table as long their prcices are 2x, I won't buy from them again
I had the X900H too, Germany. I just LOVE how Sony processes images. Although it has very fiew dimming zones, the black levels were impressive. Only the viewing angle was decent, but not good. The X950H has the extra viewing angle layer and I regret not having buyed that one. Newer TVs have more dimming zones and all that, but, the prices are... too much. I would buy inmediatedly the X950H in 75 or even 85 inches although it has only 50 or 60 zones. The processor compenses for the lack of more zones. Inky blacks, superb viewing angle, great brightness, incredible picture quality. But, sadly, I just can´t find that model anymore. If anyone knows a link were I can buy the Sony X950H in Europe (called there XH95), better in Spain, i would appreciate it very much.
Mini LED can tend to crush a lot of detail in favor of getting an inky image. Sony's approach is subtle. Sony isn't the brightest or blackest, but there's more information in the image, so the result is an image that stands out and has more depth.
Exactly correct. And, just as Sony will always tell you, they make their design decisions with the creator's intent in mind. They want you to see everything that the creator of the content wanted you to see. This is one reason why Sony's consistently provide a much better overall viewing experience than their competitors - regardless of the content you are watching.
@@michaelbeckerman7532 Sony needs to start making decisions based on the fact that it is the intent of the creator for people to be able to see their content without being forced to take out a loan on their home in order to buy a TV. Sony's products are ridiculously overpriced - the point that it represents price gouging. TCL and Hisense offer similar performance for prices that are much better. This is the benefit of competition in sales. Sony is no longer a sales leader, because of the terrible prices of Sony's TV sets.
Honestly oleds have the same issue, there's still crushed blacks too often but with certain content the black contrast can look stunning and you don't get that with the balanced 'sony' approach you allude to'. That said, there is absolutely a place for this balance and I can understand why people opt for it.
@@lancealex382 OLEDs have a couple problems. First, the "Burn-In" risk is very real - regardless of what anyone says. If you watch a lot of CNN or Fox News all day, you will eventually end up with "Burn-In" from those colors always being in the same spot. Second, the "Fast Response Times" of OLED helps the videogames with "High Framerates," such as First-Person Shooters and Racing games. However, the "Fast Response Times" of OLED actually has the inverse effect that HURTS the low-framerate movies on Blu-ray, which run at only 24 frames per second. This creates problems with Stuttering, Juddering, and Shimmery in high-speed "Movement" scenes.
Great video, I thought you explained the misconception of Mini LED always being better than regular FALD TVs quite well, I saw this first hand when the QN90A and Q90T were placed next to each other the Q90T showed more detail and slightly more blooming but the QN90A crushed details to hide blooming and get closer to acting like an OLED in most scenes I thought the Q90T held up better because important details got lost on the QN90A. Also its more about the algorithm than the the amount of zones and you covered that very well.
Q90T was d BEST. Its like ART. QN90A was nice tho. I did NOT have issue with it when I saw in store. Maybe u could try to tweak it. Seeing something in store is never accurate!!! I saw Hisense U8G 65” beside QN90A, LG CX, SONY A90J….the CX A90J looked AWEFUL AWEFUL AWEFUL, but Hisense LOOKED WORSE--at fisrt. I had to hunt down the employee to ask him to change to --STandard mode. He had on --Energy Saving mode. N back light on 💯, black level(brightness) set to 50%. And then i found d Samsung QN90A. I moved around its setting, it looked Great. N d doughy guy in store they were --really agreesive so bitchy that I went straight asking for U8G n QN90A. He kept berating the technology n brand, n kept trying to pulllme to look at OLED, n LG QNED. Ughhhhhh. 😮 U might want to re visit the store, get remotes first. Cuz they really are trying to promote LG QNED(cuz they a re not selling). N some other OLED (they get much higher commission).
Yes when comparing out of the box settings only. Mini led have more granular control and when settings are well adjusted they destroy fald tv (even if the fald tv also adjusted) this is my issues with most tv reviewers they test tv with out of the box settings when anyone know very well you can adjust settings and make a tv look closer to what you want.
If TV manufacturers were serious about producing LCD TVs that catch up with OLED displays, they would be implementing and improving the "Dual Cell" technology that Hisense introduced in 2021. In the Hisense U9DG Dual Cell TV, a 1080p black and white panel was placed behind the 4K RGB panel. This functionally provided the TV with over 2 MILLION "local dimming zones", and as the tests in the RTINGS review demonstrated, the results were spectacular. The Dual Cell TV nearly equaled OLED displays in Contrast, Black Uniformity, Blooming, and Wide Viewing Angle. The Dual Cell TV was discontinued (probably because it cost more than other Hisense models) but this LCD technology has the potential to be a highly competitive rival to OLED TVs.
Sony use MediaTek processor just like many others lol. What differentiates them is the software or algorithm used. Sony sadly have horrible motion but the best upscaling and they are very accurate but accuracy make pictures dull. I guess its for the purist. I prefer more saturated colors personally. Do a little research and you see. Its mostly marketing gimmick for the processor stuff. Its do not remove the solid software they run using it.
To be honest the X90L is the best upgrade you can make in the mid level tv race. They raised the zone count significantly, it's the best pound for pound upgrade for them from 2022 to 2023.
@@ДмитрийКузнецов-п8ч You misslead, the X90K 65inch had 40 zones now the X90L 65inch has 80 zones. Year-over-year a double zone count is a great improvement. WheneverSony carefully increases zones count they make sure that accuracy remains and no picture detail is left behind, unlike the brute force of other manufacturers. There are no perfect tv's, so shop what you like, really.
@@ДмитрийКузнецов-п8ч not with a Sony and an XR Cognitive processor it isn't. Remember, the XR is the most advanced processor of ANY TV you can buy today. A big part of that is because of the software running inside that processor. The better the software, the more accurately you can control the backlighting. What makes Sony so much better at what it does is really its ability to not only bring superior image processing to the table, but also to bring superior backlight control as well. This is why, just like the video shows, Sony is able to "do more with less". Now, if you need more than that, they offer the mini-LED based X93L. And, as you can imagine, with mini-LED's and its approximately 800 local dimming zones (along with the XR processor) it does everything even better still. That TV is almost indistinguishable from OLED displays in many cases.
Honest question. Seems like the mini led is able to achieve great black levels and high brightness situations. It also seems like some detail is lost in some of the brighter areas of the screen. Can we just adjust the brightness to see better detail? With the mini led TV then outperform the full array?
Nope its get destroyed in everything beside upscaling (when both tv are calibrated and settings adjusted to make both as good as they can get) upscaling is a non issues when using a nvidia shield tv pro has its destroy any tv in that department..
Had two oleds loved them, got burn so oled can piss off forever now. Mini led is good enough for me. Got the 65in x95l and absolutely love it and I have no fear of burn in. Win win
LUCKY MAN. The Sony X95L is definitely a landmark accomplishment for Sony - it took them long enough but this is the TV that should've been labeled "Backlight Master Drive" rather than the X95K
@@gomezwardulus4192 I am a European opting for 85, but that is because I set up my living room like a Cinema and i have the wall for it. If I lived in the UK i would opt for 50 inch Max, considering how tight the space for housing can be over there.
Yep lg got the panel replaced 2 years later burned in again don’t even watch static images and try to play few hours of different games just incase sick of it
I'm really getting annoyed with reviewers... you accomplished what you set out to do, elevate one and pull down the other... even thoug both has 2 out of 3. All the years reviewers have made a stink about dimming zones, now it's suddenly acceptable to have less.
Because more dimming zones require better processing - and it's not quite where it needs to be in order to work optimally with an ever increasing number of zones.
If you watch my livestream comparisons, you see i try my best to balance the comaprisons because we ALL KNOW there is no perfect TV. It may appear perfect in one scene but not in another. My objective as a reviewer is to match the strength of a TV to YOUR use case. If the flaws I point out is not something you'll ever see, then you win! The QM8 is still my choice for best value HDR TV but the point of this video is to demonstrate what can be done without miniLED (and less dimming zones) - it's obviously not perfect as you saw the raised blacks and blooming of the X90L but the QM8 is still an excellent TV matching the performance of the QN95C more often than not. For $1200 I don't see how this is even a problem for owners of the QM8!
QUESTION: There is a a comparison between the Hisense UK7 model vs the Sony X90L online. In this comparison, there is a Starfield test. The UK7 model does not suffer from the "Too Black" problems the TCL QM8 suffers from in the FOMO video. In fact, the U7K actually has superior blacks that are deeper than the Sony X90L while simultaneously displaying more of the white stars - similar to the way an OLED is superior to the X90L. Can you confirm this, Fomo in the specific test you show here at the end of your video?
My tcl qm851g in a similar starfield test is nowhere close to what shown here. Out of the box yes but I just adjusted the settings lol. Out of the box comparison is dumb.
I think I have watched every video review on U-Tube related to choosing between the Sony X90L, TCL Q7 or QM 8 or the Hisense UK7 or 8 and it is mind boggling, although half the fun. "On paper" I settled on the Sony X90L and went to Costo to buy one. Costco had a much cheaper 65" TCL and Samsung running on either side the of the Sony X90L. No doubt the Sony has a nice picture, but when I stepped back about 15 ft both the TCL and Samsung were noticeably brighter, and incidentally had good pictures. I realized right then and there that despite all the reviews and descriptions about nits by nerds (meant affectionately), that brightness really is important to me. Don't get me wrong, I love spending time researching and watching all the reviews, but man, you just have to go somewhere and watch these TV's side by side if you can. Your eyes may change what your brain may be trying to tell you based on what others have to say! I just ordered a TCL QM 8 ...
How's the QM8, i keep going back and forth on that one and the 90XL, I'm driving my self mad here. Any input on your experience would be hugely appreciative. Thank you in advance.
The QM8 I purchased did not disappoint. It is extremely bright and the picture is awesome. I think there is always a balance between price and quality and for me this was a win-win. If you are patient you can find TCL TV’s on sale at least twice a year and they can be significantly less expensive while delivering an equal to, or better viewing experience. The QM8 is the closest thing I have seen to an OLED but at a fraction of the cost.
I've been watching a few other channels that have also discussed Sony's X90L as well as their top tier mini LED the X95L and how they out perform most other mini LED TVs even though they both have less dimming zones than most of the competition and it all comes down to their processing and dimming algorithm. Sony revealed just before CES this year that they use their own proprietary tech to better focus their dimming zones as well as better control the gradient of light each zone needs rather than simply being on or off. It's actually pretty cool seeing how it works and because of it they don't need as many dimming zones. Apparently their 2024 mini LED TVs will have an even better version of this tech and some tech reporters that have seen pre-production TVs in action say it rivals current OLEDs in terms of picture quality and deep black levels.
U can get the same or similar black levels on the Sony if u don't mind losing a Little bit of detail like the TCL if u just set the local dimming to high because it default at medium
did I? sorry, what has been your experience with it? I still consider it best in class when it comes to highlights compared to all LCD TVs in 2023 (including the best from Samsung and Hisense) although I didn't compare it to the Sony X95L
You could also throw the Q7 into the discussion. No MiniLED. Amazing contrast. Deep blacks. And I would say less blooming than the X90L. Rtings review will be coming out soon, and I will say it scored very highly with contrast and black uniformity.
No. The Qm8 will look better in many ways, but the q7 is no slouch. Qm8 will get much brighter, and colors will "pop" more. However, the contrast in both TVs is similar, and in dark scenes, the q7 will not crush blacks as much as the qm8, for example.@@tomtube1012
Man thats good to know, as i did consider a QM8, but too many issues ive heard with TCL for last few yrs. My 2 yr old Hisense U8G still going strong with zero issues…
Yep. That "Sony Tax" doesn't look so bad now that you're on your 3rd purchase, right? I bet the Sony would have been CHEAPER in the long run and you'd have a better tv that still works.
@@Cigma-e7w must have had the cheap models pre - U8G as ive never heard anyone mention major failiures with 2021 and later Hisense. This is was my first “off brand” purchase by the way, always got Sonys, Samsungs and LGs….and only samsungs failed on me eventually
Buying a 75 x90l. Told my buddy yesterday and he said I should get a TCL qm8. Well I showed him this video and he's starting to see how superior processing beats out more dimming zones and sub-par processing. I already own an A80J now adding an x90l for the bedroom. Sony is truely the best
My picture processing is handled by a nvidia shield tv pro that even up to this day destroys any tv at upscaling ect by a large margins (even sony) so processing is something you can fix. Lack of contrast, colors and Brightness is a lots harder to fix.
If the Sony X90L does so well with no mini-LED and fewer dimming zones with its superior processing, I'm really curious how the higher end Sony X95K,X93L,X95L models with mini-LED and more dimming zones plus Sony's special processing will do in comparison to the cheaper mini-LED models and the upcoming Sharp mini-LED TV?
@@Kobzar666I have the 75’ x95K and i absolutely love it. i have a super bright room and the tv gets so bright. there’s some blooming but it’s really not a dealbreaker , unless you always have subtitles on or something
I purchased the 85-inch Costco variant with the two-year Sony warranty, three-year Allstate service, and same aluminum backlit remote included with the A95L. At some point, I was considering purchasing the Panasonic DP-UB820 for daytime viewing because of its unique ability to convert HDR to SDR while maintaining the wide color gamut on my 4K UHD Blu-ray discs. Being that the Sony X90L was released between four and five years later than the Panasonic DP-UB820, would setting the Sony X90L's HDR Tone Mapping to Brightness Preferred achieve picture quality equal to or better than the Panasonic DP-UB820's HDR to SDR conversion with wide color gamut?
I will say that for everyday watching Sony's processing is continually underrated. If people are watching a lot of shows that aren't perfect Blu-ray 4K the Sony just absolutely shines over a lot of other competition. They're upscaling and rendering of standard definition streaming apps is fantastic.
The thing is tho most ppl under 45 do not watch blue ray 4k. It’s like forcing a Narritive that is just harder by year. :) and i do hear ya. Cuz if they are using upscaling but ONLY making the panel best at $3000 to look so good but making the 1200-2200 range look like bad deal. It’s JUST not worth it. Not worth it. 😅
I have a 85" X90CK, could not be happier. Will use the $2K saved from the X95L to purchase room darkening shades for the window to allow the theater experience during the day.
I’m thinking about buying the Sony 65” x93L but I don’t want to wait until Black Friday. Do you think it’s going to be lower than the $1799 they have on sale for now?
I think it's a bit of reach to expect a company to make a device better than it is when they can jist do that next year. It would be diff if it was a bug or a small feature.
@@asole100 I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect software improvements or big fixes at least within the first year of the product launch. This is a brand new model after all.
I am wanting to save up for a 98 inch tv, so my question is .. doesn't the 98 in screen have more dimming than a 65 in screen? I am sure it does, so doesn't that make sense there would be improved contrast on the 98 in screen? I wish FOMO could review the real differences between the 98 in screens TCL and Sony, in how they look and perform. isn't there a Sony setting where we can sharpen the contrast even just a bit without ruining the whole picture. if so what is it called?
CORRECT. It does make me look smarter, it's all about perception - the minute the glasses come off, I'm suddenly less authoritative for some reason. Imagine how much smarter Barbie looks if she wore my glasses? BOOM
Nice video comparison….. now the $64k question…for an all around moderately bright family room television that will do sports, Netflix, movie nights…. $2799 for an 85” X90L or $2199 for the QM8?
For 600 cheaper you are getting deeper blacks and slightly less detail in the highlights. If you aren't a reference accurate guy, the qm8 can be driven a lot harder when it comes to color saturation and things like that. So keep that in mind depending on how you like to watch
@@paulcox2447 thanks. I’m like everyone else. I want it all. OLED blacks, Sony processing, LED juice. Lol. I’m leaning towards ponying up another $500 and grabbing a 77” A80L.
Pls give advice, 85inches TCL QM850G (2023 MODEL) is $1700 with 4 years warranty after tax, vs SONY X90L Costco 5 years warranty at $2150 after tax, which one you would choose? Thank you.
4:45 That image of an LCD with local dimming zones is not correct. No LCD with local dimming would have the whole screen as lifted blacks. The screens are pure black, but there is some blooming around the cross. That is an image of a TV without local dimming
I think this goes to show why Sony is more expensive than the other brands. You are really paying for a higher end processor and more polish. That being said, the QM8 still seems like a great TV for the price. So it really comes down to what you care about and what you are willing to spend. If you are in the market for a very good QLED TV, can't go wrong with either for most people.
I hope this isn't a dumb question (if it is, sorry) but do you believe that Mini Led's may eventually replace LCD or even QLED TV's the same way that OLED basically phased out Plasma?
no because it costs more to make mini LED Tvs and most people don't care that much about picture quality so companies will continue to make regular LCD Tvs who will buy TVs for the cheapest possible price. I doubt the production costs of Mini LED will come down enough that companies are willing to mass produce as low end/cheap TVs
So to be clear, a QLED TV is simply an LCD TV that uses quantum dots in the backlight system with the only difference being that QLED is Samsung's trademark for the quantum dot technology but Hisense also uses quantum dots in its ULED TVs - ultimately, they are all LCD TVs. All premium LCD TVs today (over $800) are using quantum dots in their backlight so essentially these premium LCD TVs are all QLED now!
It’s like car industry, there always ppl in need of “just a car” for utility reasons. I went to fast food restaurant, i saw all the Hisense ROKU tv as their menu. N bunch of other cheap TVs. There always market for Cheap/simple ,,,:) 😅
so much info and so hard to decide. this is my dilemma... 75" sony x90l vs 75" qm8 vs 65" a95k. for my Livingroom tv. all 3... are the same price. (the a95k is an open box deal). I like the bigger 75" size but not sure if I'd be happier with a smaller a95k picture quality...
Hey FOMO, since you can’t get your hands on a reference monitor, why don’t you use your phone as a reference guide, since they’re basically calibrated straight out the factory?
Nope, reference monitors are specifically used/calibrated by Hollywood creators so it would be the only true "reference" - so because movie content creators do not use the phone as a reference, I cannot call it a "reference". Even a "reference monitor" is inaccurate as they only go up to 1000 nits - for content above 1000 nits, it's all subjective and viewer preference really!
@@stopthefomo So a 14 Pro Max, wouldn’t be accurate to the creators intent in HDR, up to its rated 1600 nits? I’m not saying it should replace a dedicated reference monitor, but wouldn’t it show you if a TV’s gamma curve or color accuracy is off a bit?
If you are comfortable with Android, then get this year's TV on huge discount because the year to year improvements are incremental. With the exception of the X90K to X90L jump in performance, I don't see Philips offering the same jump.
This is the best short-form explanation of different screen types I’ve seen yet. In a world saturated with overly-verbose videos, I appreciate how precise you are in your choice of words!
Does the Sony XR Clear Image in the X90L make a significant difference? I have the X90J and I’m wondering if one would notice a significant improvement.
I'm really stuck guys 😅 I want to buy a new tv and I found a TCL C755 55" and Sony x90k 55" at the same price tag, I'm more interested in movies and football than gaming, which TV should I get ?!
New to all this. Is the x90l still a good buy. It’s 999.00 for a 65 inch. It’s for my bedroom which I watch movies in the dark. Don’t care about reflections, viewing angles or gaming.
I was thinking the same thing, the x90L was doing better due to the processing so would be interesting to see how much a difference the same processing with Mini LED would make
Fomo can you help, i have a problem, when i enable local dimming (low, mid or high) on my 65U8KQ, and when i watch monotone or monochromatic colors like clouds or backround sky...etc, i see a matrix of vertical lines on my tv, but when i turn the local dimming they disappear. Like the lockal dimming is to agressive. I was in their store but the tv there is the same, but the 65U7KQ doesnt have the problem..
Could be that the additional brightness is adding to the complication - swap for the U7K and see if this fits your use case better? You may not be benefiting from the additional dimming zones anyway, so don't spend more money if you don't need to!
Thanks for the fast reply :). When i dim down the brightness the dimming zones are still visible, until I disabled them completely. When I watch 4k videos the dimming zones do a good job and the picture is fantastic, and playing HDR games, but in low quality videos you can clearly see the zones, i watch a lot of anime and some low quality tv and there the zones are clearly visible, but you can't on the U7KQ, like the algorithm is better in that tv, for low quality videos, it knows when to disable the zones were they are not needed. The 65U7KQ uses 384 zones and the 65U8KQ uses 1008 zones, and the U8KQ has a better sound system, but in the end they are the same tv, they could use the U7K algorithm on the U8K. I don't see the zone as a problem, they just need to update it, it's not a hardware problem, just software. I informed their support about the problem and they have acknowledged that it is present in all their U8KQ tvs, even if I replaced it, it would be the same. They say that I can return it and they will refund me, in the end it's a fantastic tv, but this problem bugs me. I am thinking of returning it and when they put out the 2024 version we will see if the problem is still persistent or I keep the tv and wait for the update. Or buy the samsung when the price drops for the 2023 model.
Hi FOMO, Hope you can help me to decide, I haven't had a new TV since 2011 I had an old 55" Samsung UN60ES8000 for a long time, it was savagely killed by the hands of an 11 year old boy that will be treated like an adult, well Im looking to get a new TV but is so hard so I have these models in mind but don't know which one is better between Q7, U7K, U8K, QM8 or a X9OL, we like to see Movies, Shows, Soccer, and Play PS, hope you can help me thank you.
would really like to see the same comparison except done with a samsung miniled vs. sony non miniled. also, is there any technical difference between a FALD TV with lots of zones vs. a miniled with not a lot of zones? at what point does FALD become miniled?
Samsung miniLED is definitely not "better" - having reviewed the QN90A, QN90B, QN900B, QN95C, I can say that the additional miniLED did not make the Samsung "better". The QN90B had worst contrast and slightly lifted black bars compared to the QN90A - yes, specular highlights were a touch brighter but the compromises were unacceptable. QN95C was definitely improved but only to match the QM8 - this is why the QM8 is my current reference miniLED TV (until next year!). Hisense surprisingly added miniLED to its U6, which was completely unnecessary as the Q7 without miniLED beat both the U6K and U7K. Personally, I believe that a TV does't need miniLEDs unless they have more than 400 dimming zones.
QUESTION FOR FOMO: Does the Hisense U8K successfully achieve the three criteria you describe at the end of the video? I'm talking about the 75" IPS version of the U8K, not the 65" VA version of the U8K.
Any chance of doing a U8N vs QM7 2024 vs X90l review. They are all about the same price and Sony is still selling the X90l. Im interested in seeing how the X90l compares to the 2024 tvs in its price range. Thanks.

But I feel like Sony colour is more realistic to the eyes. but I think I would also try to game on the 85inch TV, which must be a whole new experiences due to size. please advise
I watched this video a couple of months ago and just returned to it. I find that the colors on the QM8 are nowhere near as accurate, especially in skin tones. The QM8 looks like it has a bid of red tint and seems over brightened and washed out. The Sony also seems to present more detail in the bright sections of pictures.
It’s a very very solid tv without being crazy expensive. Sony has been always bitching with the entry level and finally that’s is over. Mates, don’t just look for the cold numbers, there’s a lot of more to care in a tv other than nits and contrast ratio.
I’m in the market for an 85inch. Currently I own a 65” TCL 65R615 which is great! But I want something bigger and I’m considering the Sony X90L, TCL Q7, TCL QM8, Hisense U7K and Hisense U8K I watch movies, tv shows, streaming like hulu, Netflix, HBO, etc and all sports every day and night. I do some gaming maybe once or twice a week. And I have some blue-Ray movies that are true 4k Which should I go with?

@@birdtj82 LOL let's get this cleared up. I bought the Sony X90L from Best Buy and most importantly, Sony has hated me ever since I posted the X900H VRR fiasco three years ago. Sony has never EVER sent me a TV for review - I've had to buy them all myself. The only TVs ever sent to me for review have been TCL (but not recently, I've also had to buy the QM8 and R646 from Best Buy) and Hisense loaned me the U8K, U7K (both returned). Believe me when I say that I have been Sony's harshest critic (or did you miss my scathing review of the X95K last year, which I also bought) and this is the first time I've liked the entry level X90 model! As far as LG, they definitely don't like me and like Sony, they also do not send me any TVs for review - I've had to buy those too. I welcome loaner TV units for sure, but I always say it as it is because I don't mind buying TVs when I need to.

You can just turn down the local dimming on the QM8 to bring back the stars when you are watching that 1 movie...then you can turn it backon for everything else...why pay more for a tv that does less
Gotta disagree with you about the contrast - it's consistently good. Issues may stem from poor tone mapping which is software or bad DV processing which is also software, self-emissive delivers best in class contrast with QD-OLED taking a farther leap by offering better color luminance and color purity at wider viewing angles. Burn-in and ABL will always fall behind the flagship LCD TVs, as there are no perfect TVs but the absolute strength of OLED is definitely contrast (whether it's truly "infinite" is a different issue)
I'm curious to see a Mini-LED tv with a 720p backlight Matrix, once the tech advances enough. I presume you could then have an 8K color filter on top to resolve the fine detail, but the HD backlight image wouldn't need to be as precise.
The issue is cost, it gets exponentially more expensive to up the dimming zone counts supposedly. I doubt we'll ever see an LCD TV with over 900,000 dimming zones tbh. It would either cost more than OLED by a wide margin, or by the time we'd get there, MicroLED TV's would probably be getting cost competitive and readily available, and superior to LCD in every way.
@@shugo7337 I'm saying it would be a cheaper option to manufacture than direct view MicroLED, especially for future 8K resolutions in TV's 65" or smaller, because they wouldn't have to get the individual LED's so small, but still have a near perceptible contrast. Having 900,000 individual LED's will be a lot easier to achieve than 33 million.
this is the issue, you have so many factors going on here,, multiple dimming zones, Mini LEd Backlight but if the Processing isnt there to fully utilize all this.. then its a waste.. this just just shows how SONY really shines in what they do well. I am no Fan Boy, I have a Sony TV and want to try something Else.. Im really starting to lean toward OLED as its finally catching up in terms of brightness and you wont have issues like this at all.. But that Dang potential Burn in still is in the back of my mind.
Subtitles and large white objects on the screen look especially ugly in a backlit LCD TVs .... you can see they're not uniformly bright due to the zones behind them. Annoying, but it doesn't spoil the image much ... Ofc if you want the absolute best - buy a OLED.
Panels are different as the QM8 has more dimming zones. The C845 is a step down from the QM8 but a step above the Q7 (USA). Picture quality should be similar but the QM8 should be a touch brighter with better blooming control (all else being equal) but again all speculation based on hardware specs as we don't have the C845 to compare!
the TCL blew out some extremely bright stuff (sun, clouds) but its shadow detail was better, even in scenes u were pointing out a Sony "Win" u can just see more in shadows with its overall brightness and contrast advantage
Great videos. We have a 65" LG SM8100AUA, which I think was manufactured in the late Medieval period. 🤔Most of the content we watch is streamed from either TH-cam TV, TH-cam Premium, or PBS. Will we see a substantial difference between our ancient LG and the U8K considereing the content we watch?
You most likely will. Especially on terms of contrast and HDR performance. Your current tv is using an IPS Panel with low contrast ratio. Oled will blow your mind :-)
Thanks for replying. I've been unable to find any online discussion or review of the 65U75K with mini led tech which Costco has on sale for $699.99, so I'm not sure what U75K means. The model number is very close to U8K. Do you know about this model? Is it a private label model U8K just for Costco? Of course, no one at Costco has an answer. What do you think? Thanks again.
Great video, and point. But if the Sony had the mini led and dimming zones of the qm8, I would get it in a heartbeat. Combining Sony’s superior image quality, processing, and color, along with the tech would be a dream. I would like to see the qn95c thrown into this fight, although Samsungs image quality, processing, and color is not as good as Sony’s.
You're basically referring to the Sony X95L which sadly only comes in 85" (for USA) - maybe the 65" Sharp with 2000 zones and miniLED will be that TV this year?
Yeah, it would be interesting to see how a Sony with 1,000 dimming zones would perform. The X95L seemed to be very close to Sony's reference monitor and it has 480 dimming zones. Doubling that would certainly improve it but I do wonder if you'd be able to see a difference. On the other hand, I do suspect that tripling the X90L's to 240 would produce very similar results to the X95L which is very important for subtitles.

Love my A95K. But for value buyers, can't beat S90C
As owner of Sony X900h ("55" 2020) 4k 120Hz model (FALD).. which costs $1200 back in early 2021
I can say Sony TVs are superior overall, especially for 90 series & above..
But their price is outragoues.. X90L (65 in) is $1800 in middle east, while TCL 745C (65 in) is like $900
Videos always show cheap U.S prices.. while Euro, Asia, Africa..etc have always have higher prices for Sony
I don't care what Sony could bring to the table as long their prcices are 2x, I won't buy from them again
Yes !!!

@@michelemininni178 Thanx. That´s deffinitive a candidate.
I could of have written that myself!
Sony have Mini LED too
@@lancealex382 OLEDs have a couple problems.
Ughhhhhh. 😮
U might want to re visit the store, get remotes first. Cuz they really are trying to promote LG QNED(cuz they a re not selling). N some other OLED (they get much higher commission).
I agree KG with you 😊
Yes when comparing out of the box settings only.
Maybe because if they gave it their all they would run out of things to improve upon.
Yeah yeah yeah
Perhaps they would also have higher consumption
It’s not just software - the Sony X90L’s are using their best processor, the same one used in the mini LED & OLED models (which cost 1.5 - 3X as much)
Sony use MediaTek processor just like many others lol.
Just bought the QM8 today. I cant wait!
To be honest the X90L is the best upgrade you can make in the mid level tv race. They raised the zone count significantly, it's the best pound for pound upgrade for them from 2022 to 2023.
Are you joking? 20 dimming zones is not "significantly".
@@Krynale You are wrong. X90k has 60 zones. +20 zones is almost nothing
I just purchased the Sony X90L 75" and it is amazing 🔥🔥🔥
Honest question. Seems like the mini led is able to achieve great black levels and high brightness situations. It also seems like some detail is lost in some of the brighter areas of the screen. Can we just adjust the brightness to see better detail? With the mini led TV then outperform the full array?
Now here's the question... Does the Sony X90L still hold it's own against the new 2024 updated TCL QM8?
Nope its get destroyed in everything beside upscaling (when both tv are calibrated and settings adjusted to make both as good as they can get) upscaling is a non issues when using a nvidia shield tv pro has its destroy any tv in that department..
Had two oleds loved them, got burn so oled can piss off forever now. Mini led is good enough for me. Got the 65in x95l and absolutely love it and I have no fear of burn in. Win win

Thats exactly right . PRICE AND 3 YEAR WARRANTY. When your TV is fitting and foaming at the mouth, nothing else matters.
Great video thanks! How does this stack up to Sony Bravia 9, the high end Mini LED Sony?
He complained about black crash on miniled, so, presumably, Sony should suffer from it, too...but does it?
Why no any test about miniled Panasonic MX950 ? Nobody did It .. For which reason? Thanks ..
Also, you are explaining the qm8 highlight washout, and contrast loss incorrectly
did I? sorry, what has been your experience with it? I still consider it best in class when it comes to highlights compared to all LCD TVs in 2023 (including the best from Samsung and Hisense) although I didn't compare it to the Sony X95L
You could also throw the Q7 into the discussion. No MiniLED. Amazing contrast. Deep blacks. And I would say less blooming than the X90L. Rtings review will be coming out soon, and I will say it scored very highly with contrast and black uniformity.
This TV is amazing me. Just got it last week.
Are you saying the Q7 looks better than the QM8?
I bought a TCL 6 55" and an 75 Q8, both did not hold up well. Is the picture good? Yes, but TCL has so many comprises that its not good.
Tcl has proved terrible for me had tcl 6 and 8 both broke in less then a year never again
I've had this issue with Hisense tvs, never bought another one.
@@pboissiei have an hisense u7a from 2018 and it is going strong and though it is edge lit it is still a brillant set.

X95L is doing very VERY well
@@stopthefomo what about X95K?
@@Kobzar666The X95K is good but apparently only at 85". A different panel was used for the sizes below 85" so the smaller sets were not as good.

@birdtj82 sharp isn't better then sony. Hell no. They kinda pulling off what hisense is doing just not in the USA.
That Pan scene... 10:34 yes, sony show more details, but it's underexposed compared to TCL
Another thing to point out is the compatibility mode with the PS5. Few TVs respond to the way they respond to the PS5.

I’m thinking about buying the Sony 65” x93L but I don’t want to wait until Black Friday. Do you think it’s going to be lower than the $1799 they have on sale for now?
Seeing as you mentioned that some of the shortcomings of the QM8 are software specific, could TCL improve on these with future firmware updates??
And could one use the settings to beat the Sony?
Why wear glass frames with no lenses? Do you think it makes you look smarter? What’s the point?
CORRECT. It does make me look smarter, it's all about perception - the minute the glasses come off, I'm suddenly less authoritative for some reason. Imagine how much smarter Barbie looks if she wore my glasses? BOOM
Lol it’s an Asian thing . I had a gf keeps doing it . Its like ppl used to wear watch they feel weird not using it .
Nice video comparison….. now the $64k question…for an all around moderately bright family room television that will do sports, Netflix, movie nights…. $2799 for an 85” X90L or $2199 for the QM8?
Lol … so much for this vid
For 600 cheaper you are getting deeper blacks and slightly less detail in the highlights.
If you aren't a reference accurate guy, the qm8 can be driven a lot harder when it comes to color saturation and things like that.
So keep that in mind depending on how you like to watch
@@paulcox2447 thanks. I’m like everyone else. I want it all. OLED blacks, Sony processing, LED juice. Lol. I’m leaning towards ponying up another $500 and grabbing a 77” A80L.

4:45 That image of an LCD with local dimming zones is not correct. No LCD with local dimming would have the whole screen as lifted blacks.
The screens are pure black, but there is some blooming around the cross. That is an image of a TV without local dimming
I feel like I missed the TV Basics 101 course and skipped directly to Mini LEDs in the Modern Era 301.
are oleds still crushing darker details? been a few years since I've checked what's new
I think this goes to show why Sony is more expensive than the other brands.
@@stopthefomo Thanks for clearing that up. There are so many kinds of TVs today, its hard to keep track of them all.
It’s like car industry, there always ppl in need of “just a car” for utility reasons. I went to fast food restaurant, i saw all the Hisense ROKU tv as their menu. N bunch of other cheap TVs. There always market for Cheap/simple ,,,:) 😅

Samsung QN90C or Sony X93L. Which one would you recommend? Which has better upscaling?
FOMO should I buy last years Philips PML9507 mini led or wait for this years PML9308? I hear they will have Saphi instead of AndroidTV, sounds worse
If you are comfortable with Android, then get this year's TV on huge discount because the year to year improvements are incremental. With the exception of the X90K to X90L jump in performance, I don't see Philips offering the same jump.
@@stopthefomo I'd prefer GoogleTV, but for Mini-led they're going Android to Saphi this year. OLED and regular LCD getting Google though, grr

Comparison with the Sony X95L would be better to see what Sony can do with their best mini LED TV.
I was thinking the same thing, the x90L was doing better due to the processing so would be interesting to see how much a difference the same processing with Mini LED would make
But what about the Sony X95L, which has Mini LED? Even Sony made the mini led step with their LED Flagship.
Why did you not use the U8K (newest) 65 or better the 75 IPS/ADS Pro screen from Hisense instead of the u6h?
@stopthefomo is this the calibrated QM8 versus the uncalibrated X90L?
did TCL improve the software? also what about the risk of some of LEDs going bad in 1000 mini led TVs?
well at least in germany atm the sony is almost double the price of the TCL for 65 Inches so I sure not which one is the better deal here atm

How does the u8k hold up to the starfield test?
Hi FOMO,
Hope you can help me to decide, I haven't had a new TV since 2011 I had an old 55" Samsung UN60ES8000 for a long time, it was savagely killed by the hands of an 11 year old boy that will be treated like an adult, well Im looking to get a new TV but is so hard so I have these models in mind but don't know which one is better between Q7, U7K, U8K, QM8 or a X9OL, we like to see Movies, Shows, Soccer, and Play PS, hope you can help me thank you.
Can u please compare sonyx90L and the new Panasonic miniLED w95
X90L is not bad for SDR content. But in HDR raised blacks and light leakage to blacks bars will be very annoying. Me
would really like to see the same comparison except done with a samsung miniled vs. sony non miniled. also, is there any technical difference between a FALD TV with lots of zones vs. a miniled with not a lot of zones? at what point does FALD become miniled?
No
Any chance of doing a U8N vs QM7 2024 vs X90l review. They are all about the same price and Sony is still selling the X90l. Im interested in seeing how the X90l compares to the 2024 tvs in its price range. Thanks.

I returned a led monitor that has a good dimming algorithm. I found the picture to be a bit unnatural , as i watch alot of sci fi
But I want something bigger and I’m considering the Sony X90L, TCL Q7, TCL QM8, Hisense U7K and Hisense U8K
I watch movies, tv shows, streaming like hulu, Netflix, HBO, etc and all sports every day and night. I do some gaming maybe once or twice a week. And I have some blue-Ray movies that are true 4k
Which should I go with?
What did you finally choose? Same question for me :D
@@kanj1. I ended up with the Hisense 100” U76N. It’s been great!
Great video.... you need to add Hisense as well into this comparison as well.
Also TCL use 1.0 Color toner. Hisense USE PREMIUM 3.0 color toner same as d BIG 3. So its REALLY hard “under sell” to make a --Narritive lol. Cuz Hisense U8 U7…are d premium. 😮
@@stopthefomo hey…thx for taking the time to explain. Okay 👌 that shows a lot of gratitude. And sorry for putting u thru the hurt. And yes a lot of FAke influencers online n it’s REally hard to differentiate who’s real vs NOT. We all know most TV reviewer/tech reviewer/ car reviews are like biased to promote certain mode/brand etc. so consumers are under a lot of stress. But def u have my highest respect.
I am going to delete that comment shortly n u have my biggest apology.
And yes u are my top TV trusted review guide. I hope 🤞 my response give u good hope. I know we all make mis judgement time to time , but most ppl have decency to re exam . Thx 🙏 for being a good guy. HUG!
Ps i am Chinese. We learn to be calm n having decency. So i see that in u. :)
@@birdtj82 Although the only problem with Hisense is that it uses a native 8bit panel not 10bit which causes some issues with HDR.
So should I get the x90l or the x95l?
Where to get Starfield test video?
You can just turn down the local dimming on the QM8 to bring back the stars when you are watching that 1 movie...then you can turn it backon for everything else...why pay more for a tv that does less
Oleds have the worst contrast, it’s linked to their poor brightness. My 3 favorite oled lies- infinite contrast, abl isn’t noticeable, no more burn in
Gotta disagree with you about the contrast - it's consistently good.
Has there been any update on the QM8 with 3000 nits and 5000 dimming zones that was teased at CES?
The 5000 Local dimming zone is NOT QM8-its Hisense UX 85” .
The 98" version of the QM8 has 5000 dimming zones, the smaller size versions have less.
Wow, Fomo!! Excellent video - I learned so much! You made it so easy to see and understand. Thank you!
THANK YOU for watching!
Subtitles and large white objects on the screen look especially ugly in a backlit LCD TVs .... you can see they're not uniformly bright due to the zones behind them. Annoying, but it doesn't spoil the image much ... Ofc if you want the absolute best - buy a OLED.
I noticed when I use my Nvidia Shield and turn on the artificial intelligence enhancer I get more stars. And I have the.Hisense u8h
Could you please guide me if TCL C845 same as QM8, or very similar regarding picture quality/panel. Thank you!
When is the qm8 be on sale
Total Love the Explaining in this and the Images are great,,,, What you show us,,,,,,,,,, Can you do more of this on TV'S
That starfield test is very revealing. Glad I made the switch to oled years ago and haven’t looked back
I have the sony x90h and want to upgrade, is this tv a lot better?
I wish you compared thd sony with samsungs QN85c, not the TCL
Best mini led are ips ones. Not overly contrasty with blown out picture
@@stopthefomo very interested to see how that performs
Yeah, it would be interesting to see how a Sony with 1,000 dimming zones would perform. The X95L seemed to be very close to Sony's reference monitor and it has 480 dimming zones. Doubling that would certainly improve it but I do wonder if you'd be able to see a difference.
On the other hand, I do suspect that tripling the X90L's to 240 would produce very similar results to the X95L which is very important for subtitles.
@@stopthefomo hey I am so excited to SHARP. I had their LED , they were land slide 🛝 crushing SONY. They didnt spend enough money advertising tho. Super glad Sharp came back to USA. They left the -premium TV space long ago only selling their premiums in Japan/China. N they are like d G3 price there lol.
@@stopthefomoWhat model is a sharp that you're talking about
When are we gonna see the Sharp review?
Same here. I prob buy it even with NO review lol. I have gone thru 2 of their $3000 panels. Ppl buy SONY/LG always come over n get very “offended” , like “why is yr 3 yr old tv look SO SO SO much nicer than my $2000 SONY Bravier “.
ME: cuz its SHARP -Aquos- panel. Their Aquos is made in japan veyr premium. Most ppl dont know. 😊
as soon as it's released and I get it, hopefully this month!
@@stopthefomo sounds good looking forward to it.
@@birdtj82still has my Sharp Aquos Q+ 80" 3D LED Smart TV - 240 Hz from 2015 can run almost 4K still impressive today and work like new.
Watching this on my X90L, upgraded from TCL Q6. I mostly watching HD content. Sony new XR processor doing very good job especially at upscaling low resolution content. Its brigthness is sufficient in my living room. TCL may have better specs but Sony have better image processing algoritmh in their 2023 TV line up.
