One thing I gotta give Mick Foley credit for was helping elevate 3 guys who would go on to become future main event stars for the company in HHH, Orton and Edge.
He did it for the rock too. The rock would of been big anyway but before Foley, he was never seen as real main event threat. Foley, helped legitimise the rock so he could be a real threat to stone cold at wresltmania 15. It worked so foley did the same for hhh a year later
@@Jeffery-Vanity-Blofield Very true, although Rock was already getting there with his with his electrifying charisma and the feuds he's had with HHH back in 98.

Rocks feud as a heel with Micky Foley is what solidified The Rock as a main event player,. it showed people that he could be ruthless and hold his own when it comes to main event matches. Then when he turned face, the transformation was complete and the new face of the company was born.. The formula worked so they got Foley to do it for HHH, Orton, Edge.
@@Jeffery-Vanity-Blofield He did it for Undertaker in 1996 as well, in the sense that Taker stopped being just some giant to face a revolving door of monster heels, and developed into more of human character through their feud.
Totally agree bro and foleys match with edge at mania 22 made people take edge seriously as a maineventer and he even had a ruthless hardcore match with Ric flair, injecting new life into flairs career and cementing him as a badass even further.
I totally agree, these were the days when Randy Orton was absolute money, after Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero died though, Randy Orton lost all direction, turn after turn after turn after turn...
@dflowers30 Absolutely. The Backlash match did for Orton what the Street Fight at the 2000 Royal Rumble did for Triple H. It cemented him as a legitimate badass heel who the fans respected.
Mick Foley is the most underrated wrestler of the Attitude Era. The Undertaker, the Rock, Triple H, Randy Orton and many others owe Mick a lot for what he gave in the ring.
Not Undertaker. He was already a house 🏠 hold name and up the ranks. Mick may have gotten the worst of the punishment, but it was still Taker who actually boosted Mick. Not the other way around.
Mick Foley is easily my favorite wrestler of all time. Guy just understands the business, from promos to in ring psychology to how to properly put guys over. He can do it all.
Mick Foley and Randy Savage were two peas in a pod when it came to understanding the business and the future of the business. Just ask people like DDP back 96/97
Mick Foley will go down as one of the greatest wrestlers in history. From his Hell in a Cell match with the Undertaker to this match with Randy Orton, I am hard-pressed to think of another wrestler who put their own body through so much in such extreme ways (in WWE, anyways) quite like Foley has. An absolute legend.
Randy talks about this match on stone colds broken skull session. Says how much Mick looked after him during this match. You can tell Randy has real respect for Mick.
It's sad because you watch him do interviews and you can already tell, he absolutely took too many head shots and will eventually pay a big price for our entertainment. He's going to have major problems in the next 10 to 15 years from all the concussions he had.
Just as Triple H's legendary wars with Mick Foley elevated him as a main event player four years earlier, Randy Orton's feud with Mick Foley did the exact same thing for him in 2004 as it not only took him to the next level as a main event player but also cemented his place as a future star.
This channel is better than today’s wrestling by far. I’ve learned more about wrestling on this channel than I ever could have on my own I absolutely love the content it’s very thorough and entertaining 👍
Man, I’d love to see a retrospective of Lance Storm. I was a huge fan of his work and loved the introduction of him winning the 3 lower titles and renaming them in WCW
This feud was a testament to how good Foley was at drawing sympathy and how good Randy was at getting heat. He spit in Foley's face and I was legit heated and I specifically remember the beat down Evolution gave Foley on Raw and how brutal it looked even without the use of weapons or table spots.
This match was up there with HHH’s against Cactus jack before. I feel a lot of people don’t look at Randy as a guy with many classic matches but I’ve always had a soft spot for irton. Reminds me of heel Bret, not the best promos for the masses but those subtle character traits like the facial expressions and eye contact are there. I love the fact you chose this right after the broken skull sessions he did and hope more people can see this for what it is... the kind of match that is worth bringing a legend back for and a demonstration of how Randy when he is passionate, can help tell a hell of a story in the ring.
I remember being young and thinking Randy Orton sucked but then I saw this match and immediately became an Orton fan which I still am to this day. He’s not like my favourite wrestler or anything but I can respect the career he’s had and know when I see Orton I’m usually going to get high quality.
I remember that match at Backlash! I was sure that Orton would just end up taking no bumps and letting Mick take all the hard stuff. I had much respect for him after that! He took as much as he dished out and that was very cool! I think this was when I started to look at Orton as more than just a third generation star coasting on a name and being in Triple H's stable. To anyone that hasn't landed on a bed of thumb tacks, trust me, that hurts even more than it looks! Serious pain! And to keep on going? Orton proved he was a real tough guy in that one.
This is one of those matches thats burned into my head for obvious reasons the image and the shaking randy did after goin into the tacks is an all time great moment
Mick Foley was one of my favorite wrestlers back in the day when I used to watch, I’ve got mad respect for the man because look what he would do to his body to entertain the fans.
Another excellent video. Can't believe two of my favourite TH-camrs are from NI (or Ireland - not wanting to get political). Jim Browning being the other.
I was ringside at backlash 2004. What a great show, but I'll always remember seeing randy orton pull a razor blade out of his wristband and slice his forehead then tucking the blade away.
19:35 I loved Jerry Lawlers reaction to that bed of barbed wire. He was commentating about some of the action when he immediately stopped mid-sentence with an "oh my God!" When Foley pulled the bared wire bed from under the ring 😂
The best part of this feud was Jerry Lawler obsessing over Randy. I swear, he would call him a Greek God and rave over everything he did. It was hilarious. 🤣
This rivalry got me back into wrestling after a few years of losing interest. I usually wasn't a big fan of heels but for some reason absolutely loved Orton.

His rivalry and matches with The Rock also made The Rock a star.
