    I tested this technique in yesterday's training. The weight transfer and the hip rotation give my strokes so much speed and spin that my opponent has problems to return them. Amazing! Many thanks!

      watching this vid closely tho..it does look like it's mostly shoulder rotation (and twisting thru the core) instead of much hip rotation (maybe just a little). there does appear to be rotation in the femur (you see the knees rotating in and out) and weight transfer. but not a whole lot of hip rotation.

    This video is great and a lot of beginners will try this and say “it feels like I don’t have enough time for the swing now” that’s bc you’re doing what I had problems with. Not preparing quick enough. Weight transfer is quite smooth and fluid as long as you’re reading the ball’s placement from your opponent’s racket. Bigger backswing, stay relaxed.

    Funny timing. I was in Grünwettersbach last weekend with their training course and the best tip they gave me was the same as in this video.

    Great video, thanks Tom! To make sure we stayed in our toes, my first coach used to make very small bags of rocks he would put on our shoes, so everytime we left like balancing backwards, we painfully remembered it :D

    Two additional thoughts (thanks for yet another terrific video, btw): ( 1) I don’t know why the advice to follow the ball with your upper body (or “always keep the chest facing the ball” as I recently heard it) is not emphasized much more as a foundational concept. I was astonished at how much more natural body movement became and how much more consistent my forehands got as soon as I did this. (2) a good exercise to make sure that the torso and legs are the driving force behind the forehand is to put a broomstick horizontally behind ones back at the waist, held in place by the elbows. Keeping the stick there, then return balls to the forehand. Because the arm can barely move you have to use the torso and legs to power the shot.

    Tom - I appreciate your channel and learning along with you, recognizing that you are still improving.
    I'm age 45 myself, with similar goals to yourself. I was wondering if the "flat-footed stance" that the previous poster criticized you for, has any detrimental effect on your knees? I'm givng myself a lot of knee soreness when I try to "properly" weight transfer... and I'm hoping to get around the problem, somehow.

    Great video.... I am between the stage of beginner and intermediate..... I am using a professional racket named carlton r4 vapour trail.....but recently I bought a new joola carbon blade with yasaka rubber on it...... I am a offencive player with very less defences moves to be played so please advice me to use one of them (with the positives and negatives about the racket).... It can be also related to weight as my joola is a bit heavy than the carlton r4 vapour trail.......... Sorry I am getting you in a big differentiation as one of the rackets is of your company but I hope you give me the correct choice....... I hope you will answer my question as soon as possible. Thank you!

    do you use your hip turn and weight transfer more when the hitting at a slower pace? when i watch Tom at full speed (minute 4:40), it doesnt seem like there's much hip turn and weight transfer here. this is the point i'm trying to figure out.

    Tom, when you're in the arm back position of the forehand...are you supposed to extend your arm a bit to the rear? (or is the arm angle (at the elbow) always consistent?). i think i see the player in black extending his arm back more than you. was wondering how far back to reach w/ this movement.

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Different players have different length backswings. If you exrend your arm back more, you have the potential for a bigger swing and more speed. But some players have success with a shorter backswing, so they can play closer to the table.

    Personally I think this video is lacking a bit. It's a good start as a tip, but feet placement is just as important as getting the weight off your heels. A few exercises to gain the feeling of light nimble footwork would help a bunch as well. This is basically the foundation of the whole ability to transfer your weight. There is so much more to adres, like in the TH-cam video Greg Letts about Footwork foundation from years back.

    Hey Tom, I tell it to you straight forward: Your forehand topspins sucks;) There are positive things to say here too , but I will not:P You have hardly any hip rotation and when you look at the video it's quite hard to do it as flat footed as you are. Get to move on the balls of your feet to at least free your hip for rotation. If you were to try rotate your hip as flatfooted as you are it would be terrible for your ankles, knees and miniscus. You could also straighten your arm a bid more, allmost straight , bend your wrist back before contacting the ball(but be in that position with wrist and arm as you seem to be all the time). But I guess in theory you know all that allready:)

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure my forehand topspin could be improved - but saying it 'sucks' is way over the top. I like to take the ball earlier, with a shorter, snappier stroke, instead of a straighter / longer backswing. This is entirely personal preference and suits my game, which is generally closer to the table, because my footwork is not so good.

    • @TT-Freak
      @TT-Freak 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TomLodziak I prefer to be harsh to make people realise something...:)But you coming from a culture of understatement your reaction is not surpising:) Now that propably came out as an insult again, hehe....to you at least. Your stroke is short, not snappy though, not at all. You are way too stiff to be snappy, you need to be relaxed 1st of all. If you want it to be snappy you need your forearm included and your wrist and even your shoulder. Snappy you get only when using body if it were a whip. Hip first, shoulder next, then forearm and last wrist. Yes even your shoulder can be preloaded. Ask Rade if you do not believe me or watch a superslowmotion of Timo Boll cause he does use his shoulder in that manner, while not all pro players do that. I am curious what kind of people you prefer. You prefer people who give you honest feedback or the ones which tell you how good you are? And that is a serious question which there is no need to answer here, but for yourself.
      BTW I like your channel offers good content, but my criticism wasn't about your channels content.
      Edit: Oh and I forgot some vital part.. improve footwork 1st. You do have a missconception of how things work in combination. Footwork is part of your rootissues. Footworks is basis of all other things. People allways believe they need the best strokes, but it's wrong. Only with correct footwork you can apply all else , everything builds on it. Latter is especialy true in your case as I mentioned in previous comment. There is no way you can use your hip properly the way you move around. No proper hip rotation, no proper shoulder rotation as a result, no forarm, wrist etc. , it is all a result from inproper footwork and can only be corrected by correcting footwork 1st.

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TT-Freak I'm not quite sure what you think you're trying to make me 'realise'. Can my forehand topspin technique be improved? Yes of course! Is it as good as a professional player? No where near. I know this. Do you know why? Because I'm a 39-year-old amateur player, who started playing at age 25, whose only ambition is to do well at local league and amateur tournaments. In order for me to achieve these goals, I don't need my forehand topspin technique to be amazing like a pro. Plus 'technique' is just one aspect of what makes a shot good. Ball placement + consistency are more important in my opinion. Whilst my forehand technique is not pro standard, I don't miss many and I place the ball very well. At my level, my forehand topspin wins me a lot of points. So whilst I don't disagree at all that forehand topspin can improve in many ways, I do think you are very wrong when you say it 'sucks'.

      @TT-Freak 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TomLodziak I want you to understand that you can not explain what you do not understand yourself apart from being incapable of demonstrating it properly. Players pick you as a rolemodel wether you like it or not, but it is defenitely more an issue on such a channel with amateurs watching and trying to imitate you than in clubs. You did not leave the impression you do understand the connection of footwork and technique , its physics or dynamics. I thought it was your aim that people can learn it properly here. Correct me if I'm wrong. Your fh defenitely sucks when being used as an example, cause it's missleading. I guess I made myself clear enough now:) You do have a point about placement and consistency , agreed. Yet again those two are heavily dependend on footwork. The aim of a coach should allways be to teach as good as can be, so basically while your content is good you could stil improve on it by learning more for yourself. The more you understand the better you teach.
      About your personal aims I have to say I have a different take on that. As a coach one should never stop learning just for the sake of your students. And while your ts will never be as good as a pros it can be a hell of a lot better. Your students and you would benfit from improvments. This was never about your success as a player, but you as a rolemodel and coach. Btw where I come from we rather focuss on turning criticism into something positive;)
