It's pretty clear to me what happened to the flight: Warrior tore down the cockpit door and pushed those controls into a nosedive so that he could get closer to parts unknown.

And people wonder why wrestlers pass away in their 40-50s cranked to the gills with drugs. That road schedule was bonkers.
What's even crazier is listening to people like Meltzer talk about how they organized it. Today, if you're touring the US West Coast, you might go Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Anaheim, San Diego. Pretty much north to south.
Back then, it would be like, Sacramento, San Diego, Seattle, Anaheim, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland. Just basically one long zig zag.
@@mfdixon1985 I once heard in an interview from one of the wrestlers, can't remember who, from this time in WWF and they said they'd get their booking sheet for the next month, a wad of plane tickets and left to it whether they liked their schedule or not.
They even said those writing out the booking sheet would often even miss out towns, for whatever reason, but then write it in on the under sheet, which duplicated the sheet above when written on to cover themselves, to get that wrestler in trouble with management. So they'd do say New York one night, have nothing the next night, and then have say a twelve hour drive for the show the next night, which was a one man road trip, where they got eaten alive for missing the night before as well as fined and have whatever plans for them used for another wrestler
If I were able to do schedules for house shows, I'd try to have at least one day off for every day on for each talent.
Not everyone tho look at people like the undertaker HHH Rock they didn’t turn to cocaine and pills it was tuff back then but a lot of wrestlers made them choices regardless of wrestling when it comes to drugs

this is so great to see. I was actually at that MSG show in 1989 for my 10th birthday. I remember my parents got floor seats and i could barely see anything but was excited to see warrior. when his music hit everyone stood up and blocked my view and warrior pinned Andre super quick and was gone. I think I was able to catch a glimpse of his arm tassels and that was it. I was so mad and it almost ruined what was a fun night for me lol, but I was so grateful that my parents took me to that event . Being a kid was great back then
I went to a house show at MSG in the 1980's where Jose Luis Rivera wrestled 3 times that night, what a workhorse he was.
The first WWE event I went to was a TV Taping with non-televised matches mixed in during the summer of 1995 and I ended up seeing Yokozuna wrestle 3 times. He teamed with Owen in a match against Lex Luger and British Bulldog. Then he and Owen wrestled a squash match. Then he subbed for an injured Sid to face Diesel in a steel cage match. That show also featured a Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart teaming with each other and one of Waylon Mercy's first matches.
I guess but how long were the matches? Like 15 minutes? I'd be happy to work 45 minutes a day for several hundred, possibly even a few thousand, doesn't seem that bad.

@@maxxdahl6062 agreed..... Pretty much every pro at that level (wwf/e, wcw, ecw, tna/impact, roh and aew.... And foreign promotions ) are all very gifted but it seems the hardest part of their job isn't what they actually do in the ring.... It's the travel, maintaining their physique and tan etc..... I'm not taking anything away from those guys though, they are athletes.... Im just making a point that their actual job is only usually a few minutes a day at most a 30-60 minute broadway and that I would be happy if my work day was only around 15 minutes and in that 15 minutes I earned around the same amount as I do in a week or possibly month.
@@samuelwoods164 And house shows are also a bit different in that they're non televised. Every one of his matches could have been 30 minutes to an hour. No TV time limits there.

The WWF also ran a house show in Nashville, TN (May 6, 1989) that was extremely stretched out on purpose to make it hard for WCW to set up for Wrestle War '89 - which was taking place in the same arena the next day.
Interesting, I was at the WWF House Show the night before, May 5, 1989 in Washington, D.C. on a rainy night. I was 13 years old and it was my first ever wrestling show. I saw Ultimate Warrior vs. Rick Rude, Tito Santana vs. Rick Martel, Bret Hart vs. Mr. Perfect, and the main event was Demolition vs. Twin Towers.

Bret was so tough, to get those injuries and come back after only 3 1/2 weeks? Pretty crazy
he had no choice. Because despite Vince telling him he'll take care of Bret while hes healing the checks he was getting were practically nothing. What a shock, Vince says one thing and does another

You can see footage of Bret's injury in the Bravo match in 'Wrestling with Shadows' doc. Also, Hogan was the only one who had no use for a unionized workplace (he worked less house shows) but Ventura was the smartest wrestler of the decade trying to unionize. Mind blowing that to this day, they still have not, when every pro sports league has long since.
Hogan also went to Japan a lot and traveled a lot more than most

Wow ! Great job mate ! I been a fan since 86 of every promotion under the sun , and watched millions of shoots , and THIS i had not heard !!! Very rare ! Thanx again brother ! I was entertained as i watched some house matches in that loop as a young fan ! I remember vividly as it was my first front row match . Perfect was drop kicked out of the ring doing his wild bumps , as he WAY over rotated and his arm spun passed me over the rail knocking my drink out of my hand ! I was thrilled lol ! I patted him on the shoulder as he he spat on he ground and jerked away mumbling " dont touch me shit head " in heel fashion !

I experienced something similar at a house show in early 1993. The advertised main event was Undertaker vs Yokozuna. Unfortunately, Taker was a no show. After offering a refund they announced that Big Bossman would sub for Taker. They had to stall the undercard matches I assume to get Bossman to the show? The only one I remember was Shawn Michaels vs Bob Backlund. They went over an hour because Shawn kept refusing to start the match. After finally getting in the ring Shawn would lock up then immediately break and flee the ring while fluffing his hair. It was pretty creative and once the match started they put on a good show. Much better than the main event which lasted about five minutes.
"Fluffing his hair?... 1993?" That's almost the most "Shawn Michaels" thing to do to stall a match!!
This is the same Building where @ a 1992 Matinee House Show, where Bret Hart lost the IC TITLE to the Mountie, who lost it two days later to Roddy Piper! Lol...I’ll NEVER FORGET THAT! That was REALLY FRIGGEN WEIRD!
Vince is to blame for so many wrestlers dying young. The schedule he expects them to keep leads to the substance abuse and their bodies failing, while he travels in a private jet with his family.

That schedule must of been brutal but probably a lot of fun. When I was in my 20’s I would of loved to have travelled around the USA & other countries with my friends.

No wonder they ate pain pills like candy and shot up steroids, the schedule was so strenuous there was barely any time for rest or work out to keep the body builder physique.
I find the 23 min match intriguing. Based on Savage's reputation for meticulously planning out his matches before hand. I have no doubt Duggan was very familiar with their standard match. But having to go off script after using it so many times. Could of had some interesting results.
It's an urban myth. He scripted a few important ppv matches, that's it.

He didn’t plan every single match to the level of detail that he did for WMIII vs Steamboat, but all the other guys talk about him wanting to plan out the matches in advance with whoever he’d be working that night. Source: JR podcast, Austin podcast, and various shoot interviews with guys like Greg Valentine, Honky Tonk Man, Hogan, and others.

Interesting hearing all of this about Springfield MA - I’m basically from there, right down the road. But I think I was 1 or 2 years old when this happened, I sure as heck wasn’t there lol. Western Mass represent!!
A former roommate of mine worked security at WWF events in Springfield in the 80's. He told me that Iron Mike Sharpe once lost his car in a two-story parking garage. 😜

I remember being at a house show WWE in Cincinnati circa 88'. Main event was Macho Man vs. Honkey Tonk Man in a cage match. Other matches included The Rockers, Rick Rude, and Bret Hart was also there and had a match. I think I was in like 4th grade at the time. Edit: So basically B Show. The A show at the time would have had Andre, Hogan, DiBiasi, Warrior, etc...
At 46 years of age, I had two periods in my life when I was a massive wrestling fan. When I was about 10-11 years old in 1985/86 when I just loved Hulk Hogan and Rowdy Roddy Piper (and the Junk Yard Dog too, actually) . Then I got into it again in 1999/2000/2001 and that was exclusively due to the presence of The Rock. He was amazing back then!!
These days, as I look back nostalgically to my days of loving the industry, and watching all of these WWF/WWE videos, I'm sort of taken by how many British dudes are MASSIVE wrestling fans!!! They all seem to be the biggest fans! Brits?!?! How did that happen? Anyone?
WWF and WCW TV both aired in the UK and from what I understand a lot of WWF's 90's pay per views aired for free on television there, albeit at really late hours for their time zone. Between that and when they'd go over on tours it makes a lot of sense how wrestling was just a big there.

@@wangson Wrestling was massive here in the '70s and '80s until the TV station killed it off(keep in mind, they regularly hit 5 million TV viewers per show in a place with a population of 50m) by simply cancelling their coverage because the new channel director considered it too low brow. The local scene never recovered from the blow.
Yeah we used to get all the pay per views free of charge from 1999-2002ish, which helped to follow everything
They were split between a national network (Channel 4) who showed Sunday night heat and had 4 of the 12 pay per view shows a year.
Then if you had a subscription to SKY (which is satellite TV) 'Sky Sports' showed Raw and Smackdown and had the other 8 'pay per views' for "free"

They should be doing this now. Not them wrestle 3 cities per person but having Multiple cards with separate people. The rosters there. The star power is there. They just don’t know how to do it anymore. The networks even there if they wanted to cut up shows for it

I can't believe you did a video on here about that house show , I was there in Springfield with my family. My mom & dad were big wrestling fans and the said never been to a wrestling house show that long but it was fun we walked around , but was a long one miss those shows at the Springfield Civic Center

At 6-10 my brother would take me to all house shows in Baltimore and DC. He would always say there won’t be a title change there are no cameras.

Except for the times that Diesel won the world title, Steve Austin won the world title, Steve Austin won the intercontinental title, and The Rock won the world title. I think Bret Hart may have won the world title as well.

As someone who lives in the Springfield area, it took them probably 30-40 mins to drive to the closest large airport in Windsor locks CT. They most likely drove, would have been faster

I was actually at this show. Can't remember a ton since its been 33 years but I do recall some things. The reason for the delay given to the crowd was that the flight for the majority of the talent was delayed due to weather. The Duggan-Savage match was solid but a bit drawn out same with the Bushwackers-Powers of Pain match. The Nikolai Volkoff - Jose Luis Rivera match on the other hand was without a doubt the worst wresting match I have ever witnessed. I remember a headlock that went on for what seemed like 5 minutes. I remember deafening boring chants echoing throughout the entire arena for almost the entire match until it mercifully ended. The Horner-Hart match was the other standout which was a nice little match until the leapfrog where Hart headbutted Horner square in the junk. Once the rest of the crew arrived it was just a run of the mill house show.

I went to my first show... A house show...and i was only 6 but i swear i remember seeing the greatest intercontinental champion of all time the Honky Tonk Man must of wrestled a grand total of SIX times!! I remember bc my mom and I counted it tripping out on the amount of matches he had...looking back it was a full show everyone was there (musta been a months of prerecord for Superstars) and man the crowd was INTENSE!! I miss those crowds nowadays u can hear a pin drop... And of course we went wild for Hulk Hogan kicked Earthquakes ass and posed while we all went wild!! Good times much respect to HTM!!

I was a massive WWF fan from age 8 to 12 and once my father took me to a house show where Warrior took on Sgt. Slaughter in a steel cage for the WWF championship. Of course, the whole place went nuts for Warrior and some time back I looked up the WWF touring schedule from that time period and I couldn't believe what I was reading in regards to that schedule then. It would go like this:
Fresno
Sacramento
Bakersfield
San Jose
Las Vegas
Los Angeles
San Diego
It seems that they were all over the place in California at the time; surprisingly they went to Vegas and then back to California.
I live in glens falls,ny about a 3 min walk from the roundabout pic you used. The Civic Center is right behind the roundabout.
Gee wonder why a lot of wrestlers' bodies from that era were so jacked up. This schedule is borderline inhumane. Bret even mentioned those long travel schedules and double shots definitely played a role in wrestlers early deaths and even said Scott Hall was likely a victim of it.

when i hear House show, i always think of Diesel winning the belt against Bob Backlund in 9 seconds. it pissed me off that they didn't show the match on TV, i was pissed for years !

One of the best things in wrestling is the ref being knocked out for several minutes after getting run into by a wrestler.
I visibly recoiled when you said 20+ minutes of the Bushwhackers.
My 1st wwf show was in small town arizona '89 bushwackers vs powers of pain as well as roddy piper vs rick rude main event, piper came to the ring in a white limo.

I went to a Monday night raw taping in the 90s at a local high school.
They taped 3 episodes of raw that night.
Shawn Michaels wrestled each hour that night, feuding with Bray Wyatts father.
13:55, Bret mentioned this particular injury in his wrestling with shadows documentary from 1998.

Back in the days of WWWF, it was pretty normal to have a 23 minute match. Those were the bouts where an arm bar was held for 10 minutes.

I remember this I remember watching old WWE programming likes WWF Superstars or wrestling challenge on Saturday at that time I was here Gorilla Monsoon do a voiceover for schedule matches in different cities and it appeared that half the wrestlers would appear to one city like you said and then during the other I remember the graphics oh well then be an airplane models and Gorilla Monsoon it's like join us in your city or in your town when WWE comes to your town

As Inconsequential as it is, it’s crazy seeing a picture of the traffic circle that’s just up the hill from the civic in downtown Glens Falls New York as I sit here in downtown Glens Falls, New York. Just, never expected that.
I was fortunate enough to see two house shows back when after Warrior and beaten Hogan at WM VI. Both were similar (my 10 year old brain was at odds as to why Rick Rude fought Warrior in steal cages both nights), with a steal cage main event both nights. I forget which show, Madison Square Garden or Meadowlands, but in one of them, Rude jumped up on top of the cage to deliver one of many flying axe handles...and fell OFF the cage to the outside. I guess he landed and the stairs... and went back into the cage without hitting the floor. Lol, Would have been funny if he had "won"
I remember a wwf house show in 89….. Richfield coliseum… headlined by Andre the giant, but almost half of the roster didn’t show up due to a snow storm… it was a strange card..

I just wonder how many flights between Detroit and Hartford (yes, Hartford... Bradley International is closest airport to Springfield, MA) would actually take place.
1:18 I read somewhere that Vince never wanted Andre to take photos standing around with regular people who were tall as it would kill his 7'4" height but damn is Vince standing on something? Vince is not a short man but he's looking 6'6 next to Andre in that photo.
Well you have to remember that WWE exaggerates everything for "entertainment purposes". Wrestlemania attendance, wrestler details. Andre was probably a legit 7 feet at most, Kevin Nash did a shoot interview in which he expressed his surprise that Hogan, billed at 6'8", couldn't have been more than 6'5" or so. Vince is probably a bit over 6 feet, and Andre hunched a lot in his later WWF years.
I went to a house show that was suppose to feature Batista vs Brock in the main event, but instead we got Scott Steiner vs Batista w/ Ric Flair and then Team Angle vs Brock in the main event

Warriors opponent was almost certainly Andre. They worked TONS of house shows where Warrior would run out and beat Andre in around 1 minute. Only reason I remember this is because Andre assaulted a local news camera man in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and was arrested and my dad was at that show.
I loved going to the civic center but hated house shows. I love the tv tapings.
I saw 3 in the 90s two in new haven coliseum and one in Springfield civic center

Hey there! Great video. Love the wrestling stuff. I do have one weird editing question. When you say Auburn Hills Michigan, You put up a picture of Grand Rapids Michigan. Which is the city I live in. It doesn’t really look anything like Auburn Hills. Auburn Hills is near Detroit and Grand Rapids is almost on the other side of the state. Why did you use Grand Rapids and not like Detroit? That’s last like saying somethings in Chelsea and then showing a picture of Bristol. Just curious! Thanks!

I used to go to Springfield civic center from 1974 to 1982. Every show with Bruno and backlund as champs always sold out.
I was at a house show at Anaheim Convention Center. Hogan vs Bob Orton. The turnbuckle broke and the top rope hung loose. But they still went thru the motions, stopping where the top rope shoulda been and running back at the opponent. I kinda thought wrestling was fake after that...
Weird because of the circumstances but hardly a bad card by any stretch.

I’m friends with Jose Luis and I asked him about this card and he said he was almost made to wrestle three times that night.
I went to a house show that had Ruesev vs Big Show before they had that match in ppv yes they Tested Big Show vs Ruesev and it passed but Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan was booed out of the buliding I guess also Seth Rollins fought Roman Reigns in a table match

I live an hour from Springfield and never knew it was a wrestling town

You say St. Cloud, but show Minneapolis. Those cities are nearly 100 miles apart.
Also, the 90s were a different time. 23 minutes sounds awful today, but many fans had, 10 years earlier, gone to territory shows where 30 minute matches were common and loved.
Also, search for Cornette talking about Horner if you really want to laugh.
I think Brett Hart would wrestle as masked Mr. X as a jobber from time to time if needed, then main event the show at the end as himself.
im told there were a few guys that would do that because you'd get like 100 bucks for the job and then your normal money and they had to to make ends meet
