- In the wake of an Benoit family tragedy, the one thing WWE needed in the summer of 2007
was to avoid further scrutiny. However, the WWE roster gave the company’s critics all the ammunition it needed when several high-profile stars were named in a steroid scandal that rocked professional wrestling, leading to suspensions, firings and more...

5:28 oh and there's me under the assumption they were all independent contractors 😅
All that I heard from Batista is "I didn't get my roids from THAT place, I have my own" seeing as he denied signature pharmacy of Orlando but not steroids.
After seeing this the next timeline has to be 2007
Seconded
THIS
The late 90s to late 2000s are arguably some of the darkest year's so many dying so young.
Roid rage and brain trauma, that’s a very scary cocktail
It was mostly CTE. Roid rage in the way it's commonly portrayed is a myth. Roids can cause mood swings. But you're more likely to end up depressed using roids. It messes with the chemicals in your brain. I believe after Christopher Nowinski examined benoit's brain, he claimed it was on the level of a 80 year old extreme Alzheimer's patient.
RKO looks bigger now than he was back then
Man he bulked up like crazy being out for over a year. His back couldn’t have been that bad to come back like that. Almost doesn’t even look like the same guy 😂
He looks like how he looked like in the game WWE All Stars
@@simone3249 lol that's a good one
I remember when getting busted for steroids was a really big deal in the mid 00s and early 10s, now its barely a blip on the radar
its more like a bloop on the radar
There's a whole generation of wrestling fans that are broken by this. Personally, Benoit was a childhood hero and 2007 was the flashpoint of my wrestling obsession. It permanently created a skepticism in me.
Yep. Hard to be a wrestling fan after this.
I will never forget seeing that news. I went to a baseball game that night. Got home from the game, jumped on a computer, surfed the web some. And right before the screen on the website I was leaving changed, I saw "WWE" out of the corner of my eye on a site that normally didn't deal with wrestling. Clicked back, saw the news and was just floored.
And of all the things that were so sad about it, the part that still sticks with me the most is, as Jack detailed, the timeline between the murders. I can imagine how someone in a rage might kill his wife, son, and self in the span of a few minutes. I can't get how anyone can do that over the course of 2-3 days.
It took me years to digest the Benoit news.
It hurts so much 'cause Benoit was my all time fave. My brother looked at Bret for technical mastery, but I looked to Benoit with his element of savagery and ruthlessness that added so much to his technical skills. He was my gateway to understanding technical wrestling. Because of Benoit, I looked more to guys like William Regal, Kurt Angle, Bryan Danielson and Zack Sabre Jr.
I'll acknowledge that Benoit was my single greatest influence in wrestling. But I will never forgive his actions to his family. I won't be like other so called fans who must separate the personal from the professional, because this is all from the same man. I acknowledge how he changed the way I appreciate pro wrestling, but I'll never condone his killing, for it was premeditated, not the act of a spontaneous roid episode. No one should have the mind to so such a thing.
This is not a matter of opinion. But it's a fact! 2007 will go down as one of the darkest years in wrestling history.
Wasn't even just WWE being attacked, EVERY company was. The reports were relentlessly after anyone even remotely associated with WWE or wrestling in general, sometimes with baseless claims.
@@dwightyboy5324 The business was completely in the tank in 2007. Interest was low. Not to mention revenue being plummeted. And it isn't anyone's fault but Benoit's. He killed his family, which destroyed his legacy and reputation. Thankfully it started to get restored by the end of the year going into 2008.
@@onuoraawesome7777 I mean yeah, there's a big reason WWE doesn't typically highlight 2007, multiple terrible factors, as well as many things not aging well. I'm glad WWE got it together again from late 2007 to early 2008. And I completely agree with you, Benoit destroyed his own legacy, he made the ultimate decision at the end of the day, anything he did in the ring and on camera goes out the window with what he did in his last three days. It's baffling people still defend Benoit or try and make him innocent just because they liked his in ring work. WWE is completely justified not showcasing him.
Steroids didn't cause Benoit to kill his family
@@dwightyboy5324 I could be wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure that the Cena/HBK match in London, which was arguably WWE's highlight of the year, went near an hour because Orton and Edge (who were supposed to have a match that night) both got sent home and they just had Cena/HBK go double.
I was looking that up. I've seen articles from 2007 that confirmed Orton was sent home. Nothing on Edge. So I may be wrong that both were in trouble. But even one of the year's best moments partly came about because of something bad.
How did he get away with it? Going to court and being found not guilty smh 🤦♂️ rich people
I don't understand how they had the rock work when he is using HGH....he is 52 and looks that jacked?!
I doubt he uses HGH because he also drinks whiskey
Is he under a talent contact tho? Same with Triple H and Vince himself.
Part timers aren't tested. Oh and who the fuck cares if they are on it as long as it's monitored by a doctor then there should be no issues it's not a legitimate sport.
The Rock is literally on the parent company's Board of Directors, so it's not like they could say no.
Stupid s this may sound, I think he uses better and lighter than other guys, but I do remember his bitch tits and you can tell he got that taken care of.
To quote Daniel Tosh: "I want the best athletes science can create; just don't come crying to me when some Free Safety takes your head off in the end zone."
Maybe stupid question, who is Daniel Tosh? I don't reconise that name, or that quote. If you could tell me, that would be greatly appreciated.

I wasn't watching in 07, but I *thought* I had caught up with a ton of stuff I missed over the years . . . I didn't even know this happened, though. Great video, as usual.
Wwe hasn’t changed. Only a fool would think otherwise
Let’s be real, steroid use is still around in WWE. It’s just handled a lot better and safely. AJ Styles didn’t balloon to that size with thoughts and prayers 🤣
Neither did Orton, McIntyre, or Mahal.
Definitely it never changed
Why does it matter as long as it's being used safety and under medical supervision why does it matter if they take human growth hormone or not? This isn't a illegitimate sporting competition no matter what the State athletic boards try to keep saying it is a entertainment business.

Eddie broke my heart . I remember that day like it was yesterday. These guys wanted to be the best so bad
Now Mr Kennedy was trying to be a good soldier for Vince McMahon in WWE but he did not work out his talking points well enough. Maybe he should have just shut up.
What gets me is how it took them so freaking long to have a real concussion protocol. The Benoit thing had little to nothing to do with steroids, period. It was that his brain was annihilated and the hits just kept coming and coming.
Many pro wrestlers suffer numerous concussions during their career but only one went on to premdatively murder 2 people in 2 over 2 days.
Once again concussion or other bs had nothing to do with Benoit murdering his family. Benoit was already a violent man before that
@@jasontodd1896 He's not the only violent man in the history of wrestling. But he's the only one with that confluence of factors.
To be fair to WWE on that one (I know, I know), it took other sports a long time too.
@@jasontodd1896 to act like brain trauma played no potential major part in what Benoit did would be looking at it disingenuously
Top quality production! Been here since Day 1, not ish!!!
I grew up with Chris in Edmonton. He started in the mid 80s. Grade 10 ('84)
Why Batista never came under Wellness policy is a mystery to me ?
In every picture of him when he was younger, he has always been a huge man! He might just be a naturally big guy who lifted a lot of weights.
Or, I might just be incredibly naive!!!
Or, it may be nice to have a friend in a VERY HIGH place. The same with all of Orton's failed tests. I'm fairly sure he third stiked a few different different times, including after getting the one removed for going to rehab.
@@paulweston8408 oh yeah .. . being friends with son in law has lot of benefits
@@paulweston8408being friends with HHH helped him a lot
@@paulweston8408 yup. Just depends who you are and who you’re in with. Lesnar never had to worry, and it’s not hard to tell. Just look at photos of him in high school or early college, he’s nowhere near as jacked as he would get to in a few short years.
I just recently ran into Parker Boudreaux at a local show, and dude looked skinny compared to photos I’ve seen of him. He was really nice though, and he took a photo with my son. I hope he can eventually live up to his hype in a healthy and safe manner.
There is a massive loophole in the wellness policy. If you have a doctor’s prescription, you’re good. If you abuse steroids. You’re likely to suffer muscle tears. To recover from a muscle tear, you’ll need steroids to rebuild and repair the muscle.
Batista for most of his career would tear biceps, triceps etc every 6 months.
Background music is such a vibe
This documentary needs a follow up. Quite frankly you could a whole series on Steroids in Pro Wrestling.
Crazy how benoits dr would die a decade or so later on the same date as benoits death
Excellent video guys, kudos.
Considering what was (is) expected of wrestlers, and how they need to hold onto their opportunity once the finally have it, and the money involved, one can’t e shocked at a steroid scandal.
18:17 I'd be remiss not to point out the irony of having a champion who violated the wellness policy drop the belt to Jeff Hardy of all people
Eddie was not some innocent drug free angel when he died. Chavo and Benoit flushed his stuff he had when they found him.
Somas is a nasty drug
Another great video
Suspending people when they are having a hard time is a bad move. With so much money, you should always have options open for guys to guide them into healthier life.
My take away from the scandal is that wwe, (Vince McMahon) didn’t want to acknowledge the brain trauma on Benoit so they pinned it as a roid rage incident which makes no sense… which therefore caused the Benoit case to be closed quickly without a deep investigation… still to this day no one knows what truly happened and most fans don’t care… although he was the greatest in ring wrestler ever
Your traps give it away 100 times out of a 100. You can say your clean but the traps never lie
I remember my friends were like people are surprised wrestlers do steroids? and thats why it went away.
A long history of CTE and taking 10 months worth of steroids in less than a month? Benoit was doomed either way. I think I remembering hearing he wasn't going to make it another year or two anyway which is downright tragic
Correct. His heart was ridiculously enlarged and he was going to be dead in 10 months even if that weekend never happened
Ken Anderson really shot himself in the foot with that interview.
2007 started off really well then by the summer…everything went to putts. Thank you for this video.
Omg what? 59:1 I'm lost for words what the hell I don't understand how he was doing anything
Million scandals then & now WWE 🤦♂️
Is where my mind goes when the ghoulish Stans mock All Petite Wrestling
Why do you think big names never get busted in MLB?
Watching this, as each wrestler’s name comes up, I’m like “hmm yeah I guess I could see that they were using *some* type of steroids, but nothing major,” and then Chris Masters’ suspension was covered…..
WWE has only insulated itself since 2007. Go on the corporate site and read the policy. They have a team of doctors now on the payroll that can prescribe things instead of risking it with an outside agency. So if wwe are planning to move I to the Indian market and wanna get someone ready to hold the world title.......ehhh naaaah. That would never work, pal.
Who was the wrestler that missed their flight at McMahon's meeting 15:20
I get TRT and they barely give me enough to pass a testosterone test.
Hey!!! Kay Fabe!!
the year i hanged up my fandom and wouldn’t pick it up til late last year, it was just a dark time and bad product save some angles, smh
I think it’s important that every sport and pro wrestling organization has frequent random testing.
3 strike Rule (unless you are Randy Orton)
good video
Hey.....it's my boy Jack! Nice to hear you again bud....
Please, just once in a video say "what the deuce" lol. It will be epic.
Was Jeff hardy ever involved with any of this? If not I’m honestly shocked that he wasn’t involved with this scandal knowing how bad his personal demons were.
I still thought wrestling was 100% real when Vince McMahon came out and broke the 4th wall referring to himself as a character in a storyline before announcing the death of the Benoit family
Kid grow up

To be honest. Wrestling as a whole changed after Eddie and Benoit death's.
McMahon, albeit slowly, will get his comeuppance!
He hasn't gotten it now but what makes you think he's going to get it in the near future? The man is out of the company
At best his reputation will be tarnished. He's still going to die a rich old man who's overall successful...
Even if he deserves comeuppance
Wrestlers arent as big as they used to be! Well we know why and you better be happy about it.
Cena benefited from this massively.
Zombie Benoit confirmed for Wrestlemania
The year I got back into pro wrestling and then 2014 happened.
What was the chance of this happening, 30 minutes ago, I got recommended Benoit last match and 15 minutes later this video is put out.
The way Benoit smacks into Burke's knees during that headbutt in that last match, it's really sad knowing what happened now
Had nothing to do with it
@@jasontodd1896 you know that for a fact??
Februrary?
The Mr Kennedy story is so stupid, why couldn't he still be Vince's son and kayfabe fired.
Remember when Sports Illustrated released actually news & not wuteva they do now
Wait i thought kennedy was fired because orton convinced cena to help get rid if kennedy for being unsafe to work with
This is just a crappy fan made misinterpretation taken from an early interview Kennedy did. The fact was that Kennedy had a lot of previous issues on his records. The Orton thung came akmost simultaneously to the steroid problems, so he was subsequently let go. In all honesty it was more surprising he wasn't fired after destroying Cena's original run which was supposed to be on an equal scale of length as Roman Reigns, until Kennedy caused him to tore his pec
2007 is very unforgettable to me wwe had a BIG TARGET OR HEAT on them
After Eddie sadly passed, WWE decided to do a wellness policy check for drugs, steroids, pills etc etc, starting in the summer of 2006.
For 12 months from the summer of 2006 to the summer of 2007, fucking everyone and their mothers were getting suspended for wellness violations, be it drugs, pills or steroids.
Randy Orton and Mr Kennedy were the two main offenders that kept getting suspended.
Fucking tons of talent got suspended through wellness violations in July of 2006, so much so that The Great American Bash 2006 card had to be changed, Big Show had to replace Khali to face Taker in a Punjabi Prison match, and tons of other changes to the show as well.
WWE had to explain it all in kayfabe by saying these talents had Elevated Liver Enzymes as to why they weren’t on the show.
In July 2006 WWE didn’t have to do a wellness check for RVD as the cops did that for them, RVD lost his titles and got suspended for getting caught with a DUI while smoking weed.
Funny enough Hulk Hogan missed a Raw episode where they were doing wellness tests as he was due to face Orton at that years SummerSlam. Hulk Hogan was like, nah that don’t work for me brother.
Randy Orton and Mr Kennedy as I said were the two that would always fail a wellness test, Orton was on thin ice backstage at the time because of that, but because of Orton’s friendship with Hunter and Vince liked him, Orton would just get out of the dog house.
Kennedy wasn’t as lucky though, Vince wanted to push Kennedy to the moon in 2007, but Kennedy kept failing the wellness tests, and Vince had enough and stopped his push.
Then the Benoit tragedy happened, which was the darkest day in WWE history, so much bad press, the media was having a field day grilling WWE about steroids use.
So Vince and WWE had to proper get tough on the wellness testing.
But it wouldn’t be until 2010 when WWE fully got a handle on the wellness policy and no longer had so many wellness fails, mostly because WWE had released or let talents leave about 90% of the 2006 roster by 2010.
Its funny how Hogan just noped out of his wellness checks since its very clear he is nowhere near the same guy when he's not on the junk compared to when he is. Look at his WM IX appearance vs the year(s) before and even after
@@adamsayer11 I don’t think it was just Hogan as my suspicions was WWE themselves had something to do with it as well.
I think someone probably called Hogan and said don’t come to Raw this week because we are doing wellness testing.
Like I said fucking everyone on the roster back then was either doing drugs or pills, or on steroids.
So it would fuck up the booking of the shows and PPV’s, and WWE didn’t want to fuck that up too much.
And WWE was doing co promoting of Hogan’s reality show Hogan Knows Best back in 2005 and 2006, so they didn’t want to fuck that up for Hogan either.
It was just the carny wrestling culture back then. My word if WWE had to do wellness tests back in the 80’s or 90’s, might as well close the promotion if they had to do it back then.
They say the easiest places to get drugs that are not pharmacies, are in prisons and in 80’s and 90’s wrestling locker rooms.
And in Mexico it was a lot worse, the Mexican promotions in the 80’s and 90’s were almost like drug cartels, fucking cocaine everywhere.
@@NuMetalfan1996 oh I bet he had someone on the inside who just happened to not script him to come in that week/his back or legs were hurting or something convenient to both let him skip the tests and get higher doses of steroids. All the guys who got busted were lower level guys. Any established main eventers (your Orton's, Benoits, Triple H's, Hogans etc) got off with slaps on the wrist
Nothing and nobody can convince me that Chris did this. He loved his family so much. He was framed and I think he was the scape goat because of the problem he was having losing his brother and the constant feeling of not being enough for the profession to which he delivered some of the greatest moments ever. I DONT CARE. Eddie and Benoit are two of the most incredible stars of all time. I miss them both and I hope one day that Chris is vindicated.
Who would have framed Benoit? And why? What would they have to gain from the murders?
