Saw this today for $199.99 at Total Wine and passed (also saw it online $189.99, can't remember the website). Like you said in this market we're just not spending the money anymore. The only things I've purchased in the last 3 months are Sagamore 9yr $67 and Lucky 7 Holiday Toasted $62. Prices are going to continue to crash because most of us have 200+ bottles and are realizing we'll never taste all of them!😂
I passed on this one several times at SRP. It's just too expensive for what it is. If I find it at or below 200, then I might pick it up. Great job this year, Jason C! Happy New Year!
I've had this open for about two months now. First few pours had an insane amount of cherry, like you said. Medicinal and strong. I liked it, but it bordered overwhelming. After two months it's opened up quite a bit, the cherry is not as extreme, though still strong. The oak, leather, and other minor notes come through more. Great review!
ive seen them on the shelf, in fact a gas station i go to has three on the shelf right now. I bought a bottle and really enjoyed it. His price was MSRP. I saw some other stores around 300 locally. Amazingly enough those sold.
I was gifted this by my boss and I absolutely love it! One of my fave pours of the year! My friend bought the first release and we were both disappointed, the 2024 blows it away.
A friend of mine has a bottle and he and I had a couple pours and good conversation. This is a great bottle but I just can’t spend that much. But it was great connecting with my friend with a great bottle.
I’m a big fan of the Remus Repeal Reserve (every release, 5 though 8), and I have no doubt aid like the Gatsby, but for over twice the price, I would really need to try a pour at a bar first, if I could find one.
Love your reviews, but my only gripe is suggesting ECBP is an alternative. If they put out a 15yr ECBP, maybe. But that is just crazy to suggest they are similar in quality and flavor. Happy New Years!
I have a favor to ask. Can you explain the taste differences between Rye & Bourbon? I’m dying to try a good rye but am not willing to spend good money on something I won’t drink. Like others I’m kind of a newbie to the bourbon world. Thanks! Cheers! 🥃
@@TruthOverLies while bourbon is known for more sweet flavors like vanilla, caramel oak and more, rye can be a much spicier experience. Rye brings more herbal qualities like mint, black pepper, caraway and sometimes even dill to go along with sweeter flavors. There are different types of rye on the market like Kentucky ryes from Jim beam and heaven hill that have a higher corn content that I would recommend to start with. Pikesville being my first recommendation. Then the Indiana ryes have a 95 percent rye mashbill that tend to be more herbal forward. The best of both worlds is sagamore rye that I would recommend along with pikesville rye from heaven hill.
Jason already replied with what I was gonna say - There are 51% (barely legal) ryes like Pikesville - which blurs the line between high-rye bourbon and straight rye whisky. And then there are the 95% ryes like my fav, Bardstown Origin Rye, which are about as rye spice as you can get (you need at least 5% barely for the enzyme catalyst action, from what I’ve read).
An option would be to try a couple at a bar without buying a bottle. We are fortunate to have a bar that serves 1 and 2 oz pours so we can try several without getting plastered. Elija Craig Rye 375 ml bottles popped up in our market for like 13 and Bulleit Rye is usually available for about the same in a 375 ml. They are lower proof than the other suggestions around 94 95. Rittenhouse isn't a bad starter Rye either imo. Higher priced Sagamore Double Oak and one I tried recently I really liked was A. Overholt (Monongahala Mash).
Happy Nee Year! Saw it at Spec’s and passed on it to get the WT 70th. Hard to pull the trigger on high priced whiskey without a review. Stuff is sitting on the shelf longer for sure so urgency isn’t like before. Thanks for the review Jason. Think 2025 will be even more picky than 2024 although I do like when the group goes to new distilleries. Cheers
I grabbed the first release which came in the cool box. skipped last years, but I am still on the fence if I will get this years. Although I do love an older oakier whiskey I might pull the trigger.
Saw this bottle today at a bottle drop raffle. Luckily I won a 2024 Stagg. Made up for not getting anything off the shelf. Saw this same Gatsby at total wine for the same MSRP. I passed on it. Did find an A. Overholt monagahela rye ive been looking for though! Good day for my Whiskey Cabinet!
Steady decline in Bourbon sales is mostly due higher priced products that did not deliver. Mostly, people are buying WT101 and good quality midpriced offerings .. not so much the 80$ MGP in fancy bottles
I had a bottle of batch 1 liked it but felt it was overpriced. Tried a sample of batch 2 and I actually thought that was worse had a weird adhesive note maybe what you are saying is varnish if batch 3 has that note I’m out batch 1 didn’t. Was glad to see they finally put batch 3 above 100 proof but yeah there is no interest in this because the first two releases were over $200 and both under 100 proof this one on paper sounds better but if it isn’t as complex as RR15 which is already overpriced then yeah this will continue to be a poor value
I think there's less hype around this bottle because the first release was awful for the price. I paid 275 for mine and I keep going back to it hoping someday it will be good. It's bland and somehow drinks kind of hot despite its 97 proof. If it didn't have the most attractive bottle in the market I'd be really upset.
I think the price is too high. Yeah it's good whiskey but it doesn't have to be high MSRP because of box and heavy topper presentation. MGP stock is at a 52 week low today (1/3/25) and with the upcoming recession of 2025/26 I believe all these high prices will go down. I predict prices will be lower in 2025 compared to 2024 and lower still in 2026.
Not sure why you justify a higher price for eye candy - a nice looking bottle, package, and stopper. These are all marketing costs that R&S should bear to push this stuff. I only want to pay for the whiskey inside.
Not spending that much anymore on good whiskey not great. It is $150 at best for me and even then I would probably buy an aged Irish or Scotch over this version.
I'm sorry, but I disagree that a beautiful bottle and a heavy topper factor in. Marketing gimmicky b.s. I don't give two shites about either. I only care about the whiskey in the bottle.

I opened my bottle of 2024 on Christmas and I absolutely love it! Sweet oak and decently complex! Big fan and I might buy a backup

This is one of my favorite releases the last 2 years. I'm glad this doesn't get hype, makes it easier to find.

Bought this bad boy for 130. Very pleased at that price!
Found a grocery store that screwed up their price sku with the remus reserve and got a bottle for $100. I'm good with that.

Can you post a link for that glass?
I’ve been wondering what kind of glass for a while too @themashanddrum
That might be it

One of the few semi allocated bottles I see on the shelf that doesn't fly out the door.
Nice review! Never had it but I’d love to try it! Great looking bottle for sure! Happy New Years! Cheers!

I passed on this two times due to the price. Questioning that decision now lol
Thank you one and all! I’ll try a few whenever I’m at a good bar that carries a wide selection.
At what point do the 2024 year in review videos drop? Top 5 or 10 whichevers and whatnot...

It's weird to hear "Jason C." again and not "pork chop".

Super helpful review...
So glad I got a sample!
I had a sample of one of the first releases but I’ve never seen a bottle in person
Idea for double bass : This Gatsby 15yr against the Calumet 15yr - could add in Russell’s 15yr for a triple bass.

How would this compare to the Dickel 17? Similar age and price and also overlooked and pretty available.
I haven't seen this years yet but last year's was around $400+ I southeastern Massachusetts.
I got a bottle at $185 (still a lot but substantially less than MSRP) and am really enjoying it. I see it a lot of places on shelves.
I’ll buy 4 rare breed and won’t miss much

Remus 8 vs 24 Gatsby?
It’s priced at $250 in Ohio. I was tempted but other reviews have suggested the Repeal VIII is the way to go at just over $100
