    I was intrigued by the title. When spikes first came along I was sceptical but tried them with different sets of speakers, in different rooms with different cables and equipment. In every case the soundstage and sound quality improved dramatically ( even my wife in a blind test because she didnt know what she was testing agreed). Now as I understand the concept you decouple the speaker from the floor and again it's improved taking me back to square one. Puzzled.

      I have always used spikes, until 14 months ago I invested in a pair of Townshend isolation podiums. The difference is well worth the investment, or at least it is in my room and my rig. The downside is the damage done to your wallet and lack of approval from the aesthetics committee, AKA, the wife!

    Very interesting review, thank you. I think timing might be one of the most important features of music reproduction. If so, it must be a relatively easy thing to measure and test. If I were an academic I might even look into doing a PhD in it, but I suspect it’s been done before. Great work as ever Hans. Enjoy the music ( and the timing)!

      They are NOT easy to measure. If they were, I would have done it already. We're talking minute time differences.

    I invested in a pair of Townshend isolation podiums about 14 months ago, to augment my large floor standers. I was sceptical, particularly in view of the cost. The main benefit, in my set up is:- tighter bass. Greater mid bass punch. Slightly Warmer, yet open mids. Much better, smoother decay on the highs! Within an hour or so of installing them and playing with adjustments, my scepticism was dispelled!
    There are however some caveats. My credit card took a bit of a hammering and the aesthetics committee says they are ugly, repulsive even. She says my floor standers look like they are trying to walk out of the room. I think that is wishful thinking, on her part. My floor is also wood clad solid concrete.
    Keep up the good work Hans.

    You should really review the IF4023S speaker isolation feet

  • @vincentgizzi9716
    @vincentgizzi9716 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Something else to consider about acoustic time smearing: The vibration of a speaker cabinet, however small, can be transmitted through a floor surface (wood especially) adding its own acoustic energy in a very non-linear way. The fact that sound travels faster through solid surfaces than through air would add to the temporal distortion.

    Hi Hans, I have the Scorpio 25, do you also have the Scorpio 25? I currently have the IsoAcoustics Gaia III under them and despite my Scorpio 25 is well under 32 kg IsoAcoustics recommends the Gaia II you mentioned. So eventually I need to go for the Gaia II or the optically more matching VCF-II Magnetic. Which did you end up yourself? The Magnetic is a bit easier to position as it doesn’t have a front or rear like the Gaia’s…

    Hans, Audio Physic also offer the VCF V feet which I use with my Virgo III (current model). I found they offer excellent results.
    I also discovered great improvements using magnetic isolation from Solidair under my ModWright PH9.0X phono stage.
    Really enjoy your videos, very informative.

    Hi Hans, we are getting into extreme territory here when considering spending over 1500 euros on what your speakers sit on. Do you really consider this a worthwhile upgrade? Surely for many the money can be better spent on other areas in their systems?

    • @chrisrichards2827
      @chrisrichards2827 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well if your speakers are vibrating then it's going to be scary the sound so all three of those different isolation devices work very well the Townsend podiums are the best I saw acoustics second and audio physic 3rd.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Whether you can better spend your money on other improvements depends largely on the quality of your current equipment. But with loudspeakers of € 1500 or higher, the sound quality really improves using loudspeaker isolators. If not, I would not have spent a weeks production on them.

    A thought/question, is hard feets/spikes ever better than soft feets that isolate the speaker from the ground?

    I like your hypothese very much. That would meen. Just invest in better timing (no time smearing) from your equipment and you don,t need to invest equipment with a dsp in it like dirac.

    • @howardskeivys4184
      @howardskeivys4184 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would agree with your interpretation. I believe that acoustic room treatment and digital room can change room acoustics. Whether that is an improvement is surely down to personal preference.

  • @johnvanpolen3437
    @johnvanpolen3437 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dear Hans,
    Tube Traps do not cause "time smearing" and are not "filters" (I use these myself). Tube Traps just absorb excess bass energy resulting from room modes and have no detrimental effects otherwise. Feet do not solve room modes. I use Isoacoustics Gaia 1 mysef; on a proper designed speaker cabinet, the effects are rather subtle. A room mode at 60 Hz will be a room mode at 60 Hz, with or without feet. Please do not suggest relations on the basis of not completely understanding physical concepts.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The principle of the tube trap is often described as the acoustic equivalent of an electronic LCR network and can also be describes as a mass-spring system.

    • @johnvanpolen3437
      @johnvanpolen3437 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel The Tube Trap is hollow; in the volume, incoming sound waves resonate at low frequenties. This indeed could be described as a mass-spring system if the thing did not absord the trapped waves. But it is designed to do just that! That's precisely what I do hear: the room modes are gone; there are no disadvantages whatsoever. There is no time smearing of any kind, as this would be apparent in a compromised soundstage. Well, that does not happen. In fact, timing and soundstaging could be slightly better, because without the traps, reflections of the higher frequenties would occur form the corners of the room which are now nicely diffused by the round trap (which -again- only absorbs excess low frequency stuff). In my not so big room with concrete walls I do enjoy a full range high end system. Without Tube Traps and enormous curtains everywhere, this would not be possible.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tube traps work at low frequencies, the stereo image is a consequence of mainly mid range phenomena.

    Some would call this snake oil audio products. However, their ignorance is greater than their knowledge. Just because one doesn’t understand how something does what it does, does not constitute it being snake oil. Isolation feet and spikes are both used to remove excess cabinet resonance that smears the sound produced by the loudspeakers. Nodes in the room need to be addressed using room acoustic panels whether they absorb or diffuse the sound. Experimentation is necessary to address each room for it’s own issues. The use of spikes or isolators is more about the floor materials used in it’s construction. A wooden covered floor is no place for spikes as a wooden floor will reflect the energy transmitted into it back up into the stand or spikes causing further smearing of the sound. It may not be possible to just test these in your home as friendly dealers are few and times don’t much allow for such liberties. Each must seek the cures for their own issues. No two systems are identical in the majority of cases. This makes your effort to find what works for you more difficult. Research helps reduce your burden, but experimenting would help you more. Simple cures are few, but your efforts can be rewarded provided you are willing to open your mind and your wallet. There are no free lunches in audio. Stay safe my mates!😊👍🏻😁
