"Lessons" is about Alex's conflict with his parents about his direction in life. He wanted to quit high school and pursue his musical career full time and they wanted him to stay in school. You can see this in the outstanding documentary "Beyond the Lighted Stage" that follows the band from their humble beginnings and through the years.
I so appreciate your video production and Dev's pithy comments. I'm binging your videos and said on one of your more recent ones I would Sub if you do Working Man live in Cleveland, but I just can't hold off. Subbing now! (Please still do Working Man Live in Cleveland).
The album that put these guys in the stratosphere. 3 members that sound like they have 5 making all that sound, and highly regarded amongst their peers. Over the years each member were voted best at their instruments, and they all come from the same band. Pretty amazing musicians.
I bought this album shortly after I heard it at a friend's house on an 8-track one night and I was just blown away. I played that album until there was nothing left and of course I had it on CD later and I got to see them perform this live. I love the whole 2112 Masterpiece. But I really do love each of these songs on the other side. Each one is a total gem unto itself. Unfortunately I think you may have missed all that brilliant guitar work at the end by kind of talking over it about negative reactions to the chorus but at any rate, I am glad you are covering it. This is just a serious incredible jam and it's brilliant for three guys to pull this kind of thing off.
"Passage to Bangkok" is a trip around the world looking for smoke. 😎 I've been to Bangkok, and we really did 4/20 😎 "Twilight Zone" Pure Neil (a huge SiFi fan) "Lessons" I agree for a long road trip 👌 Waiting fore side 2 wrap. I still have this LP and CD 🎸🎸
I see a lot of good and informative comments here: the "holy triumvirate" brotherhood remains strong! I, myself, have been listening to this album since it came out in April of '76; and, despite the myriad directions my musical tastes ventured in over the years, I frequently come back to "2112" for some immersive listening sessions, and I never fail to take away something new from the experience!!
My 2112 CD is an old "ultra disc". The disc is gold and supposed to be better quality or something. I was playing it while driving this weekend and it's been a very long time since I listened to "The Twilight Zone". I was struck by how great the mixing is on that song. During the chorus, Geddy's voice comes in with a clarity and clean separation that is startling. Add in the whispered background voice in the 2nd chorus, and it's some very impressive mixing on that song.
Great album, Honestly, it’s really worth doing rushes entire discography. Their albums have so much variety through the decades, there is something for everyone
RUSH IS: Geddy Lee: Bass guitars, Oberheim polyphonic; OB-X; Mini-Moog; and Taurus pedal Synthesizers, vocals Alex Lifeson: Six and twelve string electric and acoustic guitars, Taurus pedals Neil Peart: Drum kit, timbales, gong bass drums, orchestra bells, glockenspiel, wind chimes, bell tree, crotales, cowbells, triangles, plywood, tympani, and Symphonic Chimes
I kinda figured you were sitting closer together, but I'm glad to have that confirmed by that High Five (I think I've seen her nudge you a few times under the table :) )... I enjoy side 2 along with side 1... Glad to see you playing it.
First, been a rush fan since early 80-81. Love this album very much. Love your dive in. So good. Second, been watch y’all for a couple of months now. So not to be all creepy, but if you have indeed cut your hair, I love it. It might be you had it tied up. But didn’t look that way. Anyway love the channel.
lol, 62 is my Hockey Number.... Too bad I missed it by one. Best Rush Album, and this songs hilarious personally because my Wifes from Thailand. BKK is the best big city ever!
Your approach and the deep-dive element with taking your time on this material mainly because it deserves it... Has earned my subscription and my respect. I would imagine I'm going to really enjoy this channel. I'm sure a tip will be forthcoming. Thank you for what you're doing. This music deserves the second life it's getting here on TH-cam with new generations of fans coming in all the time. Quality is timeless
Hey guys, new subscriber to your channel. Just want to say I love what you do and how you do it and I am really enjoying your videos. Big Rush fan along with Zeppelin and the Beatles being my top 3 all time. I grew up in a time when we listened to a record album in it's entirety, only stopping to flip to the other side, so I really appreciate that. Thank you!
All Right! Yeah 2112 (song, side 1) was the FU to management, they wanted shorter radio friendly songs, so Side 2 were the shorter ones to appease the dummies! Nice Work with The Twilight Zone episodes, mixed in just right!
Bangkok, what a great effing song! Great riff great chorus. Believe it or not one of my three favorites, that and Tom Sawyer and Free will. Haven’t heard it in some time, thanks!
I just think it's amazing that three guys that seemed to have borrowed ABBA's wardrobe for the album photo shoot could come up with music this incredible.😂 RIP Neil Peart.
@@graciefolden2359 Yeah, they did. Still preferable to their "80's look", in which Geddy looked amazingly like he was wearing a dead beaver on his head, and Lerxst was channeling Simon Le Bon's fashion sense. 😁
Just a side note: When they did Passage to Bangkok live, Geddy used his double neck and during the instrumental played the rhythm part on the six string while playing the bass part on bass pedals with his feet
Lessons is about Alex's conflict with his parents over Alex dropping out of High School to play music. There is a Canadian documentary called Come On Children and Alex is in it. There are a number of teenagers living together in a farm house for a certain amount of time. Alex's parents come to visit on parent day and a disagreement between Alex and his parents insue about him staying in school..
Such a great sound and groove to 'Lessons". One of my all time fav. Rush songs. I believe @blanewilliams5960 is correct about Alex's meaning of song. New cut looks great, Dev. Enjoying the 'lighter' feel? ✂
To understand Lessons you need to see 'Rush Alex Lifeson and His Parents Argue About His Future' - this was from a documentary 'Come On Children' from 1973, where 5 boys and girls lived together in a farmhouse for something like 10 weeks, Interesting look into a teen with big dreams and actually achieved them.
A couple of things - You're right Passage to Bangkok doesn't sound anything like Kashmir, they were not trying to mimic the song itself, just the general exotic tone infused into a hard rock sound. And lyrically vaguely similar, something about traveling and experiences. For "Lessons" yeah the lyrics are a little confusing but basically the *accusatory* chorus is the voice of Alex's parents coming down on the teenager version of him for choosing music over "proper" education. The verses are from Alex's perspective: the lessons that matter are not rote memory in school subjects which he'll never use, but the lessons in how to master his instrument and how to navigate to personal accomplishments in a music career.
you should binge-watch the entire t-zone series. you'd be surprised at how many figures of speech and cultural references originated from that show. the simpsons have parodied the twilight zone countless times.
I don't see any connection to Kasmir except they go through Morocco. All of the things they mention are smokable, there is no hard drugs for these guys.
Old so no one may see this....... the song had a whole lot more meaning at the time..... Weed, hash, whatever variant of THC was you thing, mostly came from outside the U.S. Run of the mill mostly from south of the border... Some great, some so-so, most all had seeds. Until Hawaii and California came into the picture.... But if you were into the awesome stuff, for the places in the song.... Each of the places mentioned really meant something, they were specific famous places for specific weed........... Talking about it brings back all kinds of great tastes, smells, highs..........
LOVE the reaction!! :) ♥ “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~ Romans 15:13
This song is not only a geography but also an accounting of the cannabis culture of the time. Getting flower from Jamaica and Columbia or hashish from Nepal or Afghanistan was a big deal back in the 70’s. The song hits about all of the hot spots where cannabis was sourced at the time. Neil dropping history and geography knowledge in one tune. Very fun.
I think the song has to do with parents, trying to restrict their children's lives, sometimes to the determent of the relationship. We have to be free, really, and, if it means that we have to disconnect from family or friends, so be it. Our journey is our own. Hopefully, we can find supporting souls who understand who we really are. Thank you!
She said it's all about drugs...hard core drugs! What i get is it's about weed only...weed comes from all those places, not a big deal not that hard core.
This is the big problem with these reactions. It’s impossible to put them in a time/place context. When your raised on Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys. It’s tough too get slapped across the face by Zeppelin or RUSh.
Great reaction, the addition of the lyrics are a great idea and would be awesome for what I have to say. I love Rush. I'm Canadian, Rush is Canadian, we got free health care, we have Rush's music, life is wonderful. Too much Zeppelin though..lol. I think you would love a really new young 3 piece band that just absolutely rocks outs, writes licks at a drop, humble, stage confidence for the ages and a ceiling so high, it's gonna be a real ride watching them. They are called the Warning and I suggest starting with Disciple live from Teatro...you like that, which you will, they got more than 50 songs that are just as good.

Alex Trebek, William Shatner, Rush…
Yep. All Canadian!
That’s a trifecta, eh?
🇨🇦🍁🎸🍁🇨🇦
In "Passage to Bankok", just after Geddy sings "We only stop for the best" listen for the INHALATION of breath.
Really drives the message home 😁
The 3 greatest rock musicians, that happened to be in the same band.
I love to ride the Thailand Express with Rush!
Yeah I'm getting High just thinking about it...

RUSH was perfection

The first side is iconic, the second side is awesome and overlooked.

An 8 track!!?? How the HELL OLD ARE YOU??!! jk 😜 😅🤣😂
This song is about🤔well Neil was real clear on this one.

They even replicated taking a toke on a big one before the guitar sole, great stuff,🤩

Agreed!
I have seen RUSH in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada,(1988 Power Windows Tour)! Great choice of album side!!
I’ve been a fan for 47 years and I’ve never picked up that Alex wrote that song. Cool, thanks.

Those Kimonos were not just worn for album cover photos, they played gigs in them also 😊

They're songs have this haunting beauty that's hard to describe. Btw I can't wait to see your genuine reaction to Nick Thurl Mavromatis' new song 🤘
I appreciate the work you did finding clips from the Twilight Zone episodes, I knew they were out there, but never did the leg work.
Thank you for noticing the effort

While the SONG 2112 is very well known, the ALBUM 2112 as a whole is one of their most underrated albums. It has some really great stuff.
I distinctly remember watching the episode about the man being in the plastic toy town and it being a portly young boy.

I have personally smoked everything they mentioned.
you should binge-watch the entire t-zone series. you'd be surprised at how many figures of speech and cultural references originated from that show. the simpsons have parodied the twilight zone countless times.
The chorus to Lessons was his parents yelling at him for not listening to them.
Better than Side One-ALMOST🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎤🎸
If you like Rush try a little Triumph. They were another great trio out of Canada.
I don't see any connection to Kasmir except they go through Morocco.
All of the things they mention are smokable, there is no hard drugs for these guys.

Was about Pot.
Only Neil could turn a 'pot song' into a geography lesson!! 😁🥴

When you take a passage to Bangkok
You end up in the Twilight Zone
What about " Tears " ?

Niel was the ultimate libertarian. Live and let live. And leave the kids alone
Imo, Lessons refer to history.
We never learn....
Just about weed.
that songs not about traveling its about smoken weed! ##@&$
