  • Starting a new Rush album is always a blast, and Cygnus X-1, Book Two: Hemispheres is no exception! This first-time reaction takes us back into space to visit our favorite black hole and to see what Apollo and Dionysus are up to.
This is our first time listening to this album. We are re-experiencing classic rock music, an album at a time, with fresh perspectives and active ears, so that Dev can learn and appreciate this music more, and so that Mike can relive his childhood.
    00:00 - Album Introduction
    03:25 - Prelude
07:53 - Apollo: Bringer of Balance
10:24 - Dionysus: Bringer of Love
12:29 - Armageddon: The Battle of Heart and Mind
15:25 - Cygnus: Bringer of Balance
20:25 - The Sphere: A Kind of Dream

A few years removed, this same thing happened to me with Permanent Waves. Not that I didn’t already like prog at 15 but the songs on “Waves” were more concise and accessible to my young rocker mind. A very short time after… I “discovered” the depth of this and waded deeper into the earlier pools of Rush’s earlier material.
All those smaller tide pools contributed to the totality of the Rush Ocean - which expanded into the albums (new pools) that had yet to come into existence.

In Cygnus Book I the traveler entered the black hole (Cygnus X-1) in his ship the Rocinante (the name of Don Quixote’s horse - like Don Quixote, Rocinante is awkward, past his prime, and engaged in a task beyond his capacities) and the traveler’s body was destroyed and "every nerve was torn apart".
In Cygnus Book II the traveler's disembodied spirit passed into Olympus and he was made the God of Balance between love and reason.

Although I am a life long RUSH fan, it took many listens to this song before I really fell in love with it. I now consider this track to be among the finest ever composed! I really appreciate that you don't stop the songs during your reactions like others do, even for the really long epics like Cygnus X-1 Book 2. Thanks much for this one!☮️

This is rock as classical music. For me this has always been like a symphony or rock opera. It is so well constructed, recorded and performed, and its technical brilliance is matched only by its compositional genius. Also, a brief word on the lyrics: as excellent as the poetry is, the "philosophy" behind this genuinely interesting (even if the "story" is not as much so). This is intelligent music written by and for intelligent people.

I was lucky enough to see this Hemispheres tour live. It's still probably the greatest live performance of any band ever, and the best of the 6-7 Rush concerts I went to. No band at any level has ever eclipsed that performance in Houston Texas. Stevie Ray Vaughn was a different thing, and lost count of how many times I got to see SRV. But Rush was just this etheral other-worldly experience. You felt like you were time traveling ahead of the lesser bands that came before them of all genres. Now I like a wide variety and Motown was my roots, so i listen to everything where the band members actually play instruments and sing without Auto Tune, so I'm not snobbish ... I love a variety to offset my appreciation for Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Rush etc. But this was easily the most amazing concert of my lifetime and i can factually say that will never change. My apologies to everyone who missed it.

the ending lyrics is the secret message of the song to me here is one of the answers to Rodney kings "Why cant we all just get along?" "We can walk our road together, If our goals are all the same. We can run alone and free, If we pursue a different aim. Let the truth of love be lighted,
Let the love of truth shine clear. Sensibility, armed with sense and liberty,
With the Heart and Mind united, in a single perfect Sphere". lyrics by Niel Peart of rush I saw this tour in the seventies it was great they had a projection screen behind them types of image or video relating to the song at the end where he sang those lyrics live, the two hemispheres came together as one brain perfect on the guitar strum ending and fade out good job hope you enjoyed it.

I know I said A Farewell to Kings was my hands down favorite but....Hemispheres is REALLY awesome too. Perhaps their epics are simplified, but as a teenager listening to their songs over and over, I learned to think deeply and critically. This lead me into philosophy. I remember sitting in the smoking area at school (getting very stoned) with my 3 inch thick "The Fountainhead" book by Ayn Rand and my peers looking at me with disgust as I was not cool. Back then, Rush fans were considered weird nerds to be cast out (Note: the song Subdivisions). I'm really enjoying your reactions. You are noticing production details I never caught on to. Thank you!

(Every stanza is packed with the words it needs to be cohesive) Plus it rocks!

Hemispheres is a great record from a prog/technical perspective, but the next album is where they really hit their stride. Better in every way. Production was suddenly much better, Vocals were suddenly accessible, Drum sound suddenly more vibrant and powerful, and lyrics go from sci-fi/fantasy to real life questions and observations. 80-85 is peak Rush IMO. Not to diminish the brilliance of Hemispheres as all Rush records are great.

SO many people don't understand what an overture means. Just like on 2112, they are giving you a sample of all the music you're about to hear. While 2112's Overture was more overt, they still do a really good job on setting up the music on this one too.

"Although the storyline revolves around a science fiction world, it uses Greek mythology to explain the double meaning. "Cygnus X-1" is primarily about the discovery of two conflicting ways of life, and two vastly different ways in which the human mind thinks (logic and emotion are separated into separate sides, or hemispheres, of the brain). The balance point (Cygnus) allows the mind to think with some logic and emotion at the same time, allowing people to be analytical, but not unemotional."

I must confess that when you guys started reacting to Rush, it seemed like you did not completely get it. Rush, to me, has the particularity of not hitting you on a first listen. I guess it is because the listener had never heard anything like this. It happened to me. I just did not know what to pay attention to until I started paying attention to the incredible music, and then, another listen for the lyrics...after a few more listens, it all comes together so perfectly. I finally see that the same thing or similar happened to you guys. At the beginning, Mike seemed to me not being comfortable with "doing Rush". I think he's a Led Zep huge fan and perhaps, as I have felt myself with Rush, kind of worship such a band. Deb, kind of started liking what she was hearing, and then it just seemed to grow on both. That is my perception. I really enjoy your reactions because you guys take it seriously and always have opinions and thoughts that make sense. I've seen reactions that just don't bring anything to the table and are extremely superficial and plain boring. Can't wait til you get to Permanent Waves. Although my favorite is Hemispheres, Permanent Waves is so freaking good and daring. This Power Trio was not afraid of anything and made the music they like regardless of what producers and record companies were trying to force them to do. That is called INTEGRITY.

Dualism never works, because tbere is no such thing as any real dynamism of two opposites. They remain static and irreconcilable or they annihilate one another. There ALWAYS has to be a third factor to bring the ebb and flow of the swinging pendilum.
We can choose to either participate and reconcile these two, as Cygnus has done in this story, or we can choose to allow the conflict and tension to play out as the destructuve third force. There is an interesting theory that working on music uses very different neural pathways than normal every day brain activity and that it tends to utilize both left and right hemispheres. I wonder if Neil hsd this in mind when he wrote this.

I think you need to read the lyrical poems of Neil prior to listening how they have been put to music. You may have a better understanding of how intelligent he was.

@@mdu2112 I know, it drove me a little crazy to leave in a typo, but I also want to do whatever I can to recreate the experience from when the album came out. 'Tis my burden. Lol

I think it's an ok piece of music, but i'm glad they stopped doing 20 minute ones after this album. The riffs are excellent, but it's very stop/start, and with the synth/soundscape part, and the acoustic coda - it gets a bit cringey for me.

@@keithewright You're free to have your own opinion of the music. No need to put others down. If Rush thought this was a viable style for them, they wouldn't condensed their music into a) more concise formats b) try and be more relatable lyrically, than a mish-mash of sci-fi and ancient greek myth. 🤷
