I love the ae86 . They are very rare here in the US . My dad used to own like 3 of these back in PR he bought them for around 2k each . Sold them long long time ago . I can’t believe this car cost a little fortune nowdays
Will say the price's is not all the anime's fault from it being Keiichi Tsuchiya main car and from it being the car that started drifting as a sport this car was bound to get to the price point it has hit but the anime has made it a lot worse.
Yeah it def has a lot more to do than just “anime car”, it’s status was always great for many reasons but ironically the reason why it was so loved is because of how cheap and inexpensive it was. Now there’s almost no reason to buy it besides it’s legacy.
I mostly mess around with the generation before the ae86, the te72 corollas, and even they are starting to get stupid in pricing. Picked up a fairly clean and complete "82 sedan in 2017-18 for $1,200 and it only needed a fuel pump and a battery. Now you can't find rollers for less than that. Sooo glad I had my dad tell me as a kid that he wished he had just stashed atleast one of the '65 mustangs he had as a 20+ year old. Because of that I've kept nearly every 80's car I've owned.
I remember thinking these cars were cool when I started reading Initial D like. 4 years ago? And searching for them only to find trash cans after trash cans Also, my hype for it died when I realized. It's probably a 100~ hp corolla. Sure it looks cool, BUT ITS JUST A COROLLA
I mean even in initial D the 86 was just seen as the shitbox underdog, the only hype around them was the high performance/cost ratio because you could basically get them for free in Japan. These days you can just do better.

Now, not to say most fans don’t understand that, they do, it’s just that the group of people who don’t (or people who’ve never watched the show and only heard about it ???) are the reason why they’re so damn expensive now.

I’ve been in the ae86 game for 25 years, and I can definitively agree they aren’t worth the hype money. Back when I was paying sub $1000 for them it was a fantastic sporty little economy car.
For your guy's entertainment, I looked at the car 12:26 and it was a total rusted out shit box. There was a massive rust hole I could stick 4 fingers in near the vin on the windshield (so the firewall is gone) and the rear pockets of the car were gone. Also when he showed it "running" to me, he could unplug two spark plugs and it sounded the same. So it was obviously running on 2 cylinders. The front of the car was hit or something in the subframe, was rusty asf in the engine bay, was rotted out at the bottom of all of the doors, and had rust appearing at the bottom of the pockets. The worst part is I drove 5 hours one way to look at this POS with cash in hand since he lied about the condition of it and said it was a "rust free" car that only needed minor work. On and he clearly bought it from pull-a-part due to the glue from the stickers still being on the rear quarters.
"If it didnt say Corolla it would be $500 at a pick and pull" "Thumbs down, this is dumb and you're dumb if you want to buy this" haha. that got me good.
i talked to the guy with the 86 from Ofallon he mostly was looking for trades not a sale and the motor was low mile and it had zero rust car was clean af and ran great if i had the extra 2k i would've snagged it.
I had a sr5 hatchback, red over black, 5 speed, stock 1800 cc with carburetor. It drove pretty good but it needed more power, sucked in the snow, wasn't too good in strong winds because the front end seemed to raise up.
Assuming no mechanical issues, that drift build isn’t a crazy bad price. All that custom welding doesn’t come cheap. Now, if it’s on the verge of blowing…no.

Back in 2015 I was looking for a fun car, my final candidates were a $1500 E30 318i that need brakes, a $2000 Miata that needed nothing, and a $4000 AE86 that didn't run, and It was at that point I realized these cars would never be affordable again...
This series is making me realize how much I actively dislike a good bit of these cars, even though I was fanboying over these less than 3 years ago. I'd rather have a Fiero than an 86 TBH. Does that make me a psychopath?

See, Im not convinced that these old majestic cars are ever worth the value, Yeah we all love them at heart, but for what they were, not what they have become, same can be said for the supra mk4 and similar that have been on the casting couch for so many years that the stains on the car are thicker than the many resprays one has had, its just so backwards that people wish to spend the money on the old instead of creating a life for the new, pick a modern econobox and then see where it takes you, abuse it and it will likely put up with it, doesnt cost a fortune to upkeep, treat it to some light mods, and then you will feel quite proud of it, thats how you make memories with a car.
i’ve been loving the content you guys have been making for a long while now, keep it up! i’ve been wondering, what’s the song used during the bottle opener/elfbar subaru sticker ad break?
For the price you can pay for these you can get either a faster car as a base for a track car, a better car or 2 actual clunkers that are probably faster.
Sheet cars all around are more expensive let alone car parts you guys don’t understand how hard it is to find original parts for there cars you can’t cry about the price these cars are still out there you just gotta be patient I’ve had owned 4 two hatches and two coupes . Now if you plan on buying one you can still find decent ones (not a show room car) you just gotta look and ask the right people.

VIN numbers are not what you'd use for identification, its the model number, otherwise, you might as well call an SR5 an ae86 because it has ae86 on the VIN, despite it having worse specs and a carbureted engine, would you really consider that as an 86? compared to the GTS which despite having AE88 on the VIN has fuel injected 4-AGE, and it has AE86 on its MODEL number, (btw JDM plates have no VIN).
@@Awsomeisimo it makes 115 HP due to the MAF sensor installed because of emissions regulations, it still has the same 4-AGE engine with the same chassis number, the model number specifies it's an AE86, you would not call an sr5 an 86 would you, despite it having "ae86" written in the vin its a 4A-C carbed engine making it more comparable to an 85, only the JDM version is RHD, AE88 is not a real model, its just a VIN number, if you want to see the actual chassis name of the car, look at the model number, not the VIN, the model number of the GTS says that its an 86.
@@someguy9133 "otherwise, you might as well call an SR5 an ae86 because it has ae86 on the VIN, despite it having worse specs and a carbureted engine, would you really consider that as an 86?" Yes. Because in America the Sr5 *is* an ae86. Ae86 refers to the chassis. Both Sr5 and GTS models in the US use the ae86 chassis.
@@Awsomeisimo "an AE88 has a steering wheel on the left side and makes 115 hp An AE86 has right hand drive and makes 130hp" I know this is 7 months old now at this point, but: The us corolla GTS is also an ae86, it is not an "Ae88". Like someone mentioned before, ae88 is simply the "vin" plate, but despite what you may have seen on regular car reviews, the "vin" is not what these go by. Ae86 refers to the *chassis* identification of the vehicle. In the US both the SR5, and GTS trims, use the ae86 chassis.
I bought my 1st in 94. Nobody wanted them and they were dirt cheap. The prices in the last 20 year have discouraged me to buy one. The closest thing would be a miata.

As stated, they paid 26k because of a TV show but they also def got scammed by the seller and BAT for not disclosing the issues with the car. In the end, bro got jebaited and now has to clean up someone elses mess. F in the chat.
The 13 falling pipe salute was a nice touch. o7
See, Im not convinced that these old majestic cars are ever worth the value, Yeah we all love them at heart, but for what they were, not what they have become, same can be said for the supra mk4 and similar that have been on the casting couch for so many years that the stains on the car are thicker than the many resprays one has had, its just so backwards that people wish to spend the money on the old instead of creating a life for the new, pick a modern econobox and then see where it takes you, abuse it and it will likely put up with it, doesnt cost a fortune to upkeep, treat it to some light mods, and then you will feel quite proud of it, thats how you make memories with a car.
car prices are so strange. asking 6.5k for an old beat up carolla, and i got a really nice 2003 BMW for 4k..
I can hear Puchii slowly dying inside in real time
i’ve been loving the content you guys have been making for a long while now, keep it up!
i’ve been wondering, what’s the song used during the bottle opener/elfbar subaru sticker ad break?
Thanks! It's from a 70s department store music album: th-cam.com/video/EQlIxbLvTr8/w-d-xo.html
@@CollectorCarFeed thank you so much! ur guys content genuinely is rlly fucking funny, can’t wait to see more :)
To think my parents owned an SR5 in 2001 and sold it for $1000 in 2004 and could have sold it to some angsty 19 year old for like $10k today💀
I feel bad for people who like the anime car without knowing of or liking the anime.
Have yet to find a guy like that tho
For the price you can pay for these you can get either a faster car as a base for a track car, a better car or 2 actual clunkers that are probably faster.
Why have an 86 when you could have a gc8 coupe… peak initial D vehicle since it never lost
the hood latches on the last car could just be because the original latch is old and impossible to find.
i got my ae86 for $400 from my neighbor love the car to death but i wouldnt spend more than 10k on one
Would you sell yours for 10k?
Sheet cars all around are more expensive let alone car parts you guys don’t understand how hard it is to find original parts for there cars you can’t cry about the price these cars are still out there you just gotta be patient I’ve had owned 4 two hatches and two coupes . Now if you plan on buying one you can still find decent ones (not a show room car) you just gotta look and ask the right people.
There is a notchback shell near me for 2 grand. I've been watching it for months.
if only there where a newer slow 2 door lightweight 4 cylinder toyota that's known for drifting that costs a similar amount
This week I searched for nissan s15 and was astonished about the prices. Though sad that my simple WRX isn't this much than I could change cars 😅
But now I have a car where I know what was repaired and done to. I look way too much from the money side.
Love how all of these are AE88
VIN numbers are not what you'd use for identification, its the model number,
otherwise, you might as well call an SR5 an ae86 because it has ae86 on the VIN, despite it having worse specs and a carbureted engine, would you really consider that as an 86? compared to the GTS which despite having AE88 on the VIN has fuel injected 4-AGE, and it has AE86 on its MODEL number, (btw JDM plates have no VIN).
@@someguy9133 an AE88 has a steering wheel on the left side and makes 115 hp
An AE86 has right hand drive and makes 130hp
@@Awsomeisimo it makes 115 HP due to the MAF sensor installed because of emissions regulations, it still has the same 4-AGE engine with the same chassis number, the model number specifies it's an AE86, you would not call an sr5 an 86 would you, despite it having "ae86" written in the vin its a 4A-C carbed engine making it more comparable to an 85, only the JDM version is RHD, AE88 is not a real model, its just a VIN number, if you want to see the actual chassis name of the car, look at the model number, not the VIN, the model number of the GTS says that its an 86.
@@someguy9133 "otherwise, you might as well call an SR5 an ae86 because it has ae86 on the VIN, despite it having worse specs and a carbureted engine, would you really consider that as an 86?"
Yes. Because in America the Sr5 *is* an ae86.
Ae86 refers to the chassis. Both Sr5 and GTS models in the US use the ae86 chassis.
@@Awsomeisimo "an AE88 has a steering wheel on the left side and makes 115 hp

I know this is 7 months old now at this point, but:
The us corolla GTS is also an ae86, it is not an "Ae88".
Isn't that one at 2 minute mark been on Hoonigan before? I think it has a matching flat bed
Its funny that the SR5's are 100% AE85's but have the chassicodes of AE86's xD Toyota rly trolled the U.S!
Funny I live near Richmond hill I shook my head when I seen that 86 😂
imagine if you left it stock how valuable it would be, imagine if you restored the chassis with factory parts?
Pretty sure the anime car at 14:20 has the old style hks cam gears that eat belts lol
I own both the ae86 hatchback and coupe and I’ll tell you right now holy fuck it’s getting more expensive
Don’t forget that one Japanese guy who slide one around
I bought my 1st in 94. Nobody wanted them and they were dirt cheap. The prices in the last 20 year have discouraged me to buy one. The closest thing would be a miata.
Why do they still keep them on the website if there already sold??
Over here you can easily get one for around 5k to 10k sometimes 36k. They are not special sr5 single over head cam. GTS dohc
I want to install hood pins because my hood currently takes two people to open
I just had a sense of Deja Vu watching this
I'd actually take the 8k SR5 and just K20 swap it, keep the K stock and fix up the rust, then just daily it.
The white one for 8k with with new brakes was a good deal.
this is like 30 minutes of shitting on these cars and i'm here for it
HACHIROKU
1:37 Yo that ae86 was in an episode of hoonigan
Thank goodness I paid $0 for mine. Well I paid $1200 for the EJ1, I traded it straight across for the 86.
The reason why they’re expensive now is because they’re cheap cars. Built cheaply, not meant to exist almost 40 years later. Most of them rusted too bad and were scrapped. Not many of them are left
who would waste 12 grand for a shit corolla...
call me stupid but I will, as a corolla guy
What's going on man have a question I have a 83 Corolla wagon I live in the United States I checked eBay I can't find the corner marker lights that goes in the fender the ones they have is to big do you guys know of any for sale
Man the baller from the baller hauler is looking rough
Bought a nice ass condition one just making very small rust spots if at all and I only paid $4,800, but it’s missing a good bit of hardware everywhere and I really just wanted a good frame to work on slowly
i don't care if it is not Gt- Apex or a Gt- s i still drive the car because i'm tuning it right now so that i could drift On the mountain pass
Cool 👍
There are a lot of 4agze swapped 86's with front mounts for sale that don't run. When you fmic a 4agze, the car doesn't idle because the manifold design is stupid af.
coupe is arguably better than the hatch imo
The second car has a 2jzge if I’m correct
Yep, that sunroof is aftermarket
has to be hatchback or it doesnt count
How was the one car a 20 valve is it a 5-cylinder?
No, it's a evolution of the 4 cylinder 4a-ge but with 5 valve per cylinder, approximatively 150/160hp
@@tcae8658 no seriously that's so dumb I guess it works good though
Yo I’ve seen the red on from ofallon. Small world.
Next can yall do FB Rx7s?
Honestly I still want one, but I probably won’t get one till the hype dies (if ever) lol
