  • I'm kicking off Crocktober 2022 with a spicy crockpot chili recipe that is JUST FOR GUYS. Only kidding, it's for anyone and everyone!
    I found this Male Chauvinist Chili in Rival's 1975 edition of Crockpot Cooking. Rival popularized the slow cooker in the 1970s and came up with the cleverest name for their miracle appliance that we still use today - The Crock Pot.
    1970s cookbooks and recipes playlist: bit.ly/3fGVd7g
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    MALE CHAUVINIST CHILI
    3 slices bacon, diced
    1/2lb hot Italian sausage, cut into 1" pieces
    1/2lb ground chuck
    2 medium onions, chopped
    1 small green pepper, seeded and chopped
    1 jalapeno, seeded and chopped
    2t Worcestershire sauce
    1t to 3t chili powder
    1/2t dry mustard
    1/4t freshly ground black pepper
    2 cans (14oz each) Italian style tomatoes
    1 can (16oz) pinto beans, drained
    1 can (16oz) garbanzo or kidney beans, drained
    In skillet, brown bacon pieces until crisp. Remove from skillet and drain well. Brown sausage and ground chuck with onions over medium heat; drain and add to slow cooker. Add bacon and remaining ingredients and stir well. Cover and cook on low setting for 8 to 14 hours. Taste for seasoning. Makes 6 to 8 servings (about 3.5 quarts).

    I wad smack dab in the middle of women's lib in the mid 70's. Male chauvinism was a hot topic back then. ✌️

    Condensed Gumbp soup is still available in most grocery stores. Growing up, my friend’s moms made their sloppy joes this way. Not my mom, however I sometimes I make it that way as my husband doesn’t like BBQ flavor.

    I was gonna cry cuz I couldn’t have any! My first crock pot was a rival
    I was going through an old trunk of my late husbands and I found a crisco cookbook 1913 I was so excited!

      For real, after that episode aired, some people threw out their Crock Pots. Probably old models like what was in the show, but still.

    Love your videos. The Jenny Joes and Taverns recipes remind me of my grandmothers recipes for what we know as sloppy joes. Pretty bland by today's standards. As for the braised celery, realize that in Victorian times celery was an expensive special treat. Special dishes were made just to hold it. This recipe is probably a hold over.

    • @cooking_the_books
      @cooking_the_books  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh that makes sense! The recipe I use for sloppy joes is definitely more heavily sauced. I don't think I would have been cut out for fancy Victorian life if I had to be delighted by celery. 😂

  • @rivards1

    Based on the name and date, I wonder if it's something Bobby Riggs had published somewhere, and Rival just didn't want to use his name?

    Italian tomato’s are usually referring to the type of tomato. Plum tomatoes or Roma. A firm meaty not so juicy tomato.

    My vote goes for more "berserk" in contemporary recipes. Okay, honestly Anna, in the game of video titling, you are 100% winning. I laugh sometimes just thinking about them well after the fact. The stale potato chip revival trick is utterly bonkers! I'd almost get a crock pot just for that feature, if it worked! (I'm chip and cracker obsessed, FYI.) Well who wouldn't like a zesty chili? I wouldn't have thought of bacon in there either, necessarily, but actually sounds like this one turned out alright... despite its awkward title. Thanks for this great one Anna!

      Ok thank you for making me feel better about my title(s). It's pretty much how I talk IRL and I'm trying to lean into it! 😄 I'm just about ready to leave out an open bag of chips for a couple of days and let them go stale just to see if the crisping trick actually works.

    Taverns are still a popular lunch (called dinner here) meal made at many small town bars/cafes. I prefer them over sloppy Joe's, which are more on the sweeter side than taverns. If you enjoy sloppy Joe's, I highly recommend trying the tavern recipe.

    • @cooking_the_books
      @cooking_the_books  ปีที่แล้ว

      I will have to give them a try! Sloppy joes can sometimes get a little sweet for me. I tend to add a little more vinegar to the recipe I usually use.

    It’s a male chauvinist chili because it has pig (bacon, sausage) in it. (Commenting halfway through the video without waiting to see if you ended up in the same place, but it seems obvious to me lol)
