    Kudo is very similar to mma but with less damage sustained in competitions, so I'm definitely interested as I love to fight and also want to have a pretty face the next day. Not everyone is a pro, many people have university classes to attend to and work to do the next day.

      @@transcendentalarts5942 true but take into consideration that if fighting is a hobby it is preferable to avoid face injuries that could possibly cause long-lasting or permanent damage. There is a small percentage of mma fighters with horrific face injuries (ex: hole in the skull from knee, etc...) that could be avoided with the use of a protective mask like in kudo and that is a factor to consider, at least for amateurs like me.

    "Why would you want to do Kudo....", oh man so many reasons. I've been doing martial arts since I was 10 years old. I'm 59 now. Kudo was always the art I was looking for even though it didn't exist yet when I was that age. I have a BB in Isshin Ryu Karate, I did kick boxing for years, I have a 5th dan BB in Hapkido, I have practiced Judo for years (and still do), tried Krav Maga. I love all martial arts but If I found Kudo back in the day That probably would have been the one and only art since that is what I've been looking for all this time (I really Like Hapkido though, I'm really happy with that art). I would love to attend a seminar on Kudo some day (I live in western Canada).

    Hi Jason sensei, this video is an excellent insight into what kudo is! In particular, I find myself very aligned with you on the inner aspect of osu that from martial arts I have brought into my life, in my work in particular, and for me it means never giving up in the face of difficulties, and to move forward despite obstacles. On the other hand, it is also true that kudo is a martial art that involves all fighting distances without leaving holes; moreover, practicing in a healthy and safe way and avoiding being injured to the face and head using the appropriate helmet is a significant plus point. I hope for all of this that I have written so far, in the future, kudo will spread widely, because it has every reason to deserve it. It could also be preparatory to mma. I don't want to go unnecessarily further and leave space for other people for their opinions as well. I recommend sensei keep your passion strong in spreading our beautiful sport. I always wanted to train Kudo... but there was a point during my Kung Fu training where the kwoon had borrowed a pair of Kudo helmets, so I got to try some full contact wearing them, it was awesome for animal styles, cuz I could palm strike and claw to the eyes without actually eyepoking the opponent.... but at least at the time, I would end up getting the helmet glass fogged more or less.... Still this is what I'd most like to train alongside Savate, neither is possible in Denmark.

    • @kudoista

      @@kudoista Good to know :) I might actually consider getting some and setting up some animal style Kung Fu exhibition fights with MMA rules and ground and pound to the face allowed, so I can do animal fists full contact without the risk of eye pokes. I've done a couple of MMA exhibition fights with ground and pound allowed only to the body (like you, I don't feel like ground and pounding someone to the face or having it done to me, just for sport).... I could do animal style vs more modern combat sport style using those masks, that'd be interesting, although I'm at my best using boxing to set up my Kung Fu kicks, but part of that is that I've done less intense sparring with animal styles, as you can easily end up doing eye pokes.

    Kudo is a great functional martial art and the rules about limited ground fighting does encourage more time spent focusing on the stand up while learning the ground still... but if this rule of just 2 instances of ground fighting with 30 seconds at most is enforced by stand ups, then the disadvantage for self defense it does not encourage one to learn how to get back up from skills rather than the rules... still no combat sport is perfect for self defense and I really like Kudo.

    • @kudoista
      @kudoista  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I agree. Learning how to stand back up from the ground is a very useful skill that gets neglected in Kudo. There are a few things in the Kudo competition rules that I personally would like to change. Hopefully it will continue to evolve in the years to come.

      @damonclark5742 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kudoista Actually, I 100% agree with the 30 seconds on the ground rule from a self defense perspective. In a real life self defense situation, if you hit the ground you need to get back to your feet ASAP! So the 30 seconds rule should force the students to focus on the skills and strategies for getting back to their feet immediately. Any longer than that and it becomes even more detrimental. In fact, I wouldn't mind at all if they reduced the time to 15 or 20 seconds. That's how long you might have in a real fight to get back to your feet before it becomes even more life threatening.

    Wow! This martial art is brilliant i would love to learn it and train in it like you ive done different martial arts and disciplines which i did to do mma as back in the day there wasn't classes or lessons in it from when i watched ufc and saw the footage of the gracies go to different dojos and challenge fighters i knew i had to learn B.jiu jitsu as all my striking would be useless if i got taken to the ground it would also go well with the other martial art i was training in sanda Chinese kickboxing which had throws so when i was learning judo i lucky to find B.jiu jitu lessons from an instructor who was moving from Brazil as back then it was a new art and not many teaching it in the end i got a blue belt and also became a pro cage fighter. So what i like about kudo is as you said the its like mma but has the safety asspect to it that being said i would prefer to have the element of ground and pound but i understand the danger it cones with perhaps elbow four arm pads could be added to the fighting protection or some adjustments to the rules which will allow to be able to do it like 20 seconds of ground and pound before the reff steps in to call the points if the fighter can't defend or escape anyway thats just me still never the less it looks like and amazing martial art!

Definitely the most comprehensive martial art with gi and belt rankings there is. If someone wants a spiritual journey and marking their accomplishments with belt colors in addition to learning a practical and versatile style, Kudo is the way to go. Otherwise, one should probably go for sambo or flat-out MMA, I think.

      I haven’t trained in sambo so I can only give you one side of the picture. But Sambo is definitely more grappling oriented. I don’t think they have a time limit to the grappling like Kudo does. Not sure about ground and pound. Kudo is more striking oriented. I don’t like the head gear in sambo. It doesn’t protect your face from damage nor does it reduce brain from trauma. So it’s pointless really. In that respect I think Kudo is a better amateur sport but sambo would be a better base if you were looking to compete in mma in the future. Just my thoughts anyway.

      "Ku" is the same character as the "kara" in karate meaning empty, or in this case "open" or "limitless".
      "do" means path, road, way etc

      It’s really up to each sensei. I came from a dojo that used no judo at all, but then moved to a new location and new dojo which has a strong judo influence. My Judo skills are still very poor. Personally I really only use about 10 or so throws from judo, but combine them with Muay Thai clinching techniques and striking to create a very well rounded and unique system of grappling. Judo with knees, low kicks , elbows and head butts is a very practical method of clinching. It takes Judo and makes it more self defense oriented. I’m still exploring this area of Kudo. The potential is limitless.

    Can kudo be used as a base for MMA like wrestling, Bjj or kickboxing

    • @kudoista
      @kudoista  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, Kudo is a form of mma itself so it can serve as an amateur mma style to groom someone for a future in mma competition. Some Kudo fighters have transitioned to professional mma careers. However because of the different rule sets, Kudo focuses on some different techniques and strategies to main stream mma. The striking aspect is very similar but mma is much more grappling oriented. I have trained with many pro mma fighters. I found I was on par with them in striking skills, but when it came to grappling they were on another level. For a Kudo fighter to transition to mma rules would require a lot of wrestling and mma rule specific grappling. So my personal opinion is that if you want to fight mma professionally, you are better off doing mma from the start. However if you want to compete as an amateur, then Kudo is a far better choice.

  • @CynicalSnowflake
    @CynicalSnowflake 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does Kudo not teach techniques banned in competition and traditional strikes such as the boshiken or nukite? What about defense against weapons? This seemed like my ideal style as I love the full-contact sparring, but the more I look into it, the more it just seems like MMA in a gi where everything not used in competition has been done away with. Sadly, the same thing seems to have happened to Kyokushin and BJJ.

    • @kudoista
      @kudoista  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re right it is more like mma than a self defense oriented system. We only train the techniques used in competition. But because Kudo competition allows for such a wide repertoire of techniques, it gives you a good solid experience in realistic fighting. Enough to give you plenty of tools to use in a typical one on one unarmed fight. I haven’t been in a street fight in over 20 years though, so self defense is no longer a reason for my training. If I was in law enforcement or security, or lived in a more dangerous part of the world I would want to add more SD training into my bag of tools. So if that’s your goal then Kudo probably isn’t the best choice for you. It’s great for learning how to fight in general but doesn’t address weapons , multiple opponents, dirty fighting etc. So I would say it’s a good place to start to learn no BS practical fighting and get used to dealing with realistic attacks and 100% resistance. Then you could add to it with more specialized training. But if you can find a school/ style that covers everything really well, then that might be a better route. It’s a rare thing though. And there is a lot of BS out there. Especially in knife defense!

      @@kudoista Thanks for your elaborate answer. It's difficult to find information about Kudo's curriculum online.
      I've done MMA, BJJ and Kyokushin for over a decade, but they never really scratched that self-defense itch. I think my best bet would be a traditional JJJ school where they actually spar, or a full-contact Krav Maga place.

    how good kudos grappling and takedowns and how often they train it?
    and how good do you think kudos would do in pure grappling?

    • @kudoista
      @kudoista  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kudo grappling is largely Judo and BJJ influenced with some basic wrestling. How much time is spent on grappling will vary with dojo’s. When I teach my classes we usually spend about 20~30 minutes each class doing some technical drills followed by grappling sparring. Usually I will focus on one type of skill. Either Muay Thai influenced clinching , judo throws, or BJJ style submissions. Or I focus on a drill that combines all 3 of those disciplines in a way that is effective for Kudo competition. That is always the goal. To learn to combine grappling techs that will flow easily from striking, ending with a fast submission or a dominant position. So it is more applicable to self defense rather than grappling competition. To do well in any combat sport you have to focus on the types of skills that are effective under the specific rule set that you fight by. So no I wouldn’t recommend Kudo for someone who is interested in grappling competition. Just like I wouldn’t recommend a grappling gym to someone interested in competing in Kudo.
      There is less emphasis placed on grappling in Kudo than there is in typical mma gyms. So the wrestling ability of mma fighters is much better, if they are training full time. But for amateurs who only only train a few days per week, trying to become highly proficient in grappling and striking is a very difficult task. For such people I think Kudo is an effective alternative.

      @@kudoista thanks for the answer, and that’s exactly what i was expecting kudos to train, but im still wondering, kudos striking is really good so I just wanted to know how good they would be on the ground, for example old school judokas used to train newaza for high level unlike now, combat sambo (which is very similar to kudo) are high level grapplers even tho they also have limited time on the ground but they still train wrestling and grappling for high level, so in kudo they learn some basics on the ground thats only effective for their sport or they go a little bit more and they get to a decent level of grappling?

      @@zero-z3354 Kudoka who are competing at a high level and training full time will generally have a decent level of grappling ability. Cross training in BJJ is pretty common. But still I don’t think the grappling level is as high as Sambo or mma which place a lot more emphasis on grappling skills.

    • @kudoista

      No it’s not really as important in Kudo. Kyokushin is really focused on withstanding punishment to the body. That style of competition demands it. But it depends on the dojo. Some dojo’s that have converted to Kudo from Kyokushin may still emphasize body conditioning.

      Similar sports. I think combat sambo is more grappling-oriented whereas Kudo leans more toward striking. The headgear in Sambo is not as protective as Kudo HG, so the fighters take a lot more damage to the face. I think Sambo would be a better choice for those looking to go on to compete in pro MMA. Kudo is better for amateur competition.

    • @kudoista
      @kudoista  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It all depends on your experience and what ranks you hold. Also what arts are you combining and in what type of format. For what purpose. Self defense? Sport? …
      Kudo was developed before mma was a big thing. Their were numerous people around the world combining different arts to create new hybrid arts. Some of them were fore runners of mma and got absorbed under that umbrella while others did their own thing going in a different direction. Krav maga, Kajukenbo, and Jeet kune do are examples of hybrid arts that followed their own paths. But unless you are someone with a LOT of experience then you are simply just someone dabbling in different arts and combining them. It’s only mma if you are doing it for the purpose of competing under mma rules.
