    I could not believe my eyes when I saw this clip this morning about something inherently boring like “cleaning an EGR value” of a car and all of the sudden find myself in a movie theater watching an old and classical Hollywood western movie with a voice of John Wayne, with a lots of excellent humor, with a neigh of a horse, and with modern and high quality video editing techniques produced not by a Silicon Valley young computer nerd but by a retired man god knows from what part of Midwest of USA.
    I truly enjoyed it. A list of cleaning materials, a technical discussion on how the cooler and the EGR value are related and what is inside each one of them, the kind of brushes to use for cleaning purposes and the way to disassemble and reassemble the parts were very useful.
    Merv, your sense of thoroughness is highly appreciated and as far as I am concerned is highly admired as well. Thank you, Merv!

    2:35 replace the G-Damn screws with bolts. I used M5m bolts under allen wrench from a bike.

    4:00 the black cap is the stator and the round magnet is the rotor of electrical motor. they drive the jack-screw back-front, just like the jack screw of an airplane controls the horizontal stabilizer at the tail.

    Thank you for this video. I also got rid of the useless member - took a saw and just got it off instead of trying to reach for the nut. THANK YOU for the lovely idea in that other video (whatever that was)! Next - trying to level a head on sandpaper, instead of paying machine shop. The fun awaits!

      @@jayviz Turned out to be great! Took me a while with distractions, work, kids etc so a bit over a month. Followed a few videos that made it much easier. The thing about sanding the head surface - is to glue sand paper to a long piece of glass or straight table well enough. Then it is just repetitive motion for a while. The trick is to shave visible dark spots off - dont even need tools. Some vids get crazy about having it to be super straight - bs. Once it is all fresh metal, it is done (mine took about 3hrs). Another thing i discovered - old bolts break often. So had to extract a broken bolt out of a cylinder block. Hardest part is to make a center for drill. In any case - all turned out good. Car runs smooth now after everything got cleaned! I'm going to sell it, but the way engine sounds now, it might just go another 200k easily.

    if you look at the top end of the heat exchanger, the flange is bent toward the nuts. this makes it impossible to install a wrench and turn it. I cut off some of the square material, to make some 45 degree. This allowed me, this night, to disconnect the EGR from the stainless steel heat exchanger. I would advise all of you, to take off even more of the material. I used a box-wrench to turn the nuts.

    Well, I found myself laying across the engine as if it was a surfboard to get that expendable crew member and stud out. He will be taken off as soon as the cleaning effort is done. Now, that all is out, a lot of the gunk working it's way out too. Heard something to the effect that oven cleaner shouldn't be used on aluminum. Any info on that? Thanks so much!

    • @MervsServiceSecrets
      @MervsServiceSecrets  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes! Excellent point! That same concern led me down a rabbit hole of research. My understanding is the cooler is made from stainless steel. HOWEVER, many surrounding parts are made from cast aluminum so I didn't use oven cleaner on those.

    This has been super helpful. As I am reassembling I can't seem to find gasket number 4. Any idea what part number this would be?
    I haven't had luck looking it up at parts stores.

      See if this link helps, friend: amzn.to/480LHC1. Although you don't need the entire kit, it may give you some idea what the part number is. Also, try searching for "3rd gen prius gasket egr pipe"

    How should one clean the surfaces that reuse metal gaskets, if at all? Fine sandpaper?
    Merv's parts look good as new. I've cleaned the insides of darn near everything (so many rinse cycles), but my outsides still show their age (~165kmi) and I need to finally reassemble tonight. Thanks for the quality help, Merv & friends!

    Fantastic video Merv I just did the removal an install of a new cooler I had bought, could not 6:07 have done it so well without your video, as far as the easy off liquid can I pour it in the cooler with the stoppers and leave it overnight how many hours? would you say and you did it a few times would that be a few times overnight?

    • @MervsServiceSecrets
      @MervsServiceSecrets  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The first time I did overnight, but then I must admit I got impatient. Its worth noting that I did NOT use it on aluminum parts. Only on the stainless steel cooler. This is just my personal approach and I liked the results. I can understand why a feller might want to soak it for a shorter duration of course. But rinsing it well is a big plus and of course be careful you don't get any in your eyes. I also encourage you to read some of the other comments. Our viewers have some mighty good tips that can take things to the the next level for you. Hope this helps. - Merv Himself

      Thanks Merv I have it soaking as we speak I had bought a brand new one that I changed out the other day but your video was fantastic help could not have done it without it. I see you took apart the EGR valve I know you can only use brake parts cleaner on it, just spray brake cleaner on little shaft is and and the opening and a brush, keep the electrical part upright is that the idea,
      You got it super clean, I see

    Why not just take the stud out of the Expendable Crew Member? Will it leak coolant from there?

    How dry do the pieces need to be when you reassemble?

    • @MervsServiceSecrets
      @MervsServiceSecrets  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, for the gaskets, if you have cleaned them with chemicals they will dry fast. For the cooler, I would make sure it's dry.

  • @west_park7993

    the black sooth there is rather strong carcinogenic material. contains PAH. polyaromatic hydrocarbons. pyrene, benzpyrene, antracene, tetracene, etc nasty stuff. make sure you clean up the mess, your hands, clothing and do not breath the dust. Thanks for the oven cleaner idea. I will soak my heat exchanger right now.

      Sorry I am just now finding your message. Yes, I agree. That is RIDICULOUS for a digital puchase. It should be instantly available! To be honest, I have been VERY unhappy with Spring, but being that we are a small channel I just haven't had time to create a new online store. Let me know if you finally resolved this. If not, let me know in this comments section and I will see what I can do. For the record ... and quote me on this .. SPRING SUCKS.

      Stepper motor ,to allow precise valve opening, according computer.

    • @myself248
      @myself248 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Six wires is more than needed for a simple solenoid. That's a six-wire stepper motor.
      According to the EWD, two of the wires are constant B+, and the other four run to the ECM. By grounding one or two of those at a time, current flows through specific windings, and by doing that in a sequence, the magnetic field rotates, pulling the cylindrical rotor around with it.
      The valve stem has a coarse thread on it, which is pushed or pulled by the rotor. A spring returns it when the motor is unpowered, meaning there's no need for position sensors or encoders -- the ECM simply assumes a starting position and dead-reckons after that, counting pulses as it goes. Open-loop control.

      @MervsServiceSecrets  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very true. I used the easy off on the cooler because it says it's safe for stainless steel. I can't claim to be a genius -- this is just my personal approach and I liked the results. I can understand why a feller might want to soak it for a shorter duration of course. But rinsing it well is a big consideration too.

      @@MervsServiceSecrets The first time I did this on my own car it took forever to clean the cooler out. However, I did my fathers car yesterday and I was done in about 2.5 hours.
      I first took a thin coat hanger and shoved them through each passage while the cooler was dry. I then blew air through it with my compressor and then poured oxiclean powder into the smaller end of the cooler and corked it. Then I poured your oxiclean powder through the larger opening followed by filling the rest of the cooler with simple green. I let that react for a bit while I was boiling a big pot of water on the stove.
      While I was waiting for the water to boil, I shoved the coat hanger through the passages again while it is filled with the Oxiclean/simple green combo. Then poured everything out and used some compressed air and water again.
      Then refilled it the same as before and corked it. Placed it into the boiling pot and left it for 2 hours or so. blew it out with water and compressed air and it was clean as a whistle.
      couldn't believe it.
